College Student Adaptability and Greek Membership: A Single Institution Case Study

Ayres, Amy R. 05 1900 (has links)
Since the birth of the United States in 1776, Greek-letter societies have been an integral part of American higher education. Research on the impact of Greek membership varies at best, and often is in conflict from study to study. This study surveyed students affiliated with Greek-letter organizations at the University of North Texas. The research examined the college adaptability of Greek students by gender in five areas: Overall adjustment, academic adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, social adjustment, and attachment to the institution. The study, conducted in the spring of 2006 at the University of North Texas had 80 respondents. The Student Adaptability to College Questionnaire (SACQ) consisted of 67 items on a 9-point scale. The SACQ is designed to assess how well students adapt to the demands of the college experience. Raw scores and percentile rankings were determined by t-test calculations. Test scores were expressed through t-scores in relation to the standardized sample. Data show no statistical significance in any of the five areas studied: Overall adjustment, academic adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, social adjustment, or attachment to the institution. Female participants scored higher on all scales than male participants, indicating a slightly higher level of adjustment, though not enough to be significant. Both males and females scored highest in attachment to the institution and social adjustment, while both scored lowest in personal-emotional adjustment.

The Embedded American Artist

Chaffin, Jason Edward 14 May 2010 (has links)
As our world ramps up the speed of its connections, our identities merge with increasing speed and angles of confluence. Not only are new identities created, but also the more fringe social and cultural elements of our world are exposed to mainstream consciousness. My work is a product of my own fringe background (namely its sheer breadth of experiences not normally visited upon a single person's life). My aim is to add variables to our social and cultural speed of combination and new variety by creating work that is derived from my own experiences to speak to those who are of the newer combinations and newer social recognition. I am motivated to create this work both to perpetually define and redefine myself, and also to give ground to an ‘identity of no identity' on a global scale, to our artistic dialogue and catalog.

Based on the study of poverty as a violation of human rights, this paper seeks to justify through the values of justice and fraternity here understood as solidarity the right to the minimum necessary to a dignified existence as a starting point towards the desired right to development. The topic in question is justified by the empirical data on poverty and underdevelopment to which human rights have proposed solutions throughout its history notably through an international treaty that established the International Labour Organization within the Nations League, the United Nations Charter and an entire normative body created when the renowned Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted in 1948. The right to the existential minimum, which within the scope of fundamental rights finds some reductionist views that border on a lack of regard for human dignity, as a human right emerges as the true path to the realization of the right to development thanks to the wide recognition of economic, social and cultural rights as a mandatory bond that engages the State and society in their duties of respecting, protecting and ensuring the rights of people living in poverty. Last but not least, the right to development is revealed as the only possible tool to the solution of social issues seen by the Christian social doctrine as the conflict between labor and capital which generates new forms of social exclusion. Development, translated as a movement towards betterment, is presented as the right of peoples to the full enjoyment of human rights for every person and every society, a true expression of the common good / Esta pesquisa tem por escopo o estudo das relações entre o direito ao mínimo existencial e o direito ao desenvolvimento, a fim de compreender a extensão e a efetividade dos dois institutos.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Victor Ernesto Ochoa Flores.pdf: 635913 bytes, checksum: ac0c5fc318a4cc03cb7fc276a3c5cd8b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-02-24 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo / This study aimed to investigate the Campanhas da Fraternidade where the speech of Catholic Church in Brazil is expressed on the issue of labor, knowing that the CF is a communication tool that generates juncture between the faithful ones and the Catholic hierarchy. Understanding and studying the speech promulgated within the CFs that express the position of the Church regarding the issue of labor and unemployment through the CF of 1978, which addressed the theme as "Fraternity in the world of labor", presents the reality of the relationship between Church, State and world of labor. This CF presents the labor reality that operated at the time of the military regime and the positioning of the Catholic Church, which through this CF, presents in an ambiguous way. Our hypothesis break part from the traditional relations between Church and State, which come out from collaborative relationships and influences, to keep itself in the public scene. This new Church procession is due to participation of Catholic bases inserted in the realities of injustice, and that will lead the episcopate to insert through social projects at the beginning of the 20th century, through the BC entered into development projects in partnership with the State. The Church misses, in the shadow of the State, in accordance with the new political circumstances, and has chosen to be close of the large masses and is positioned critically before the Military State, which in this case is unpopular and repressive, entering in the social realities through a speech of politico-religious slant. This process is originated from the historical context where the genesis of what led to the creation of CF and how the Church uses the CF as pastoral strategy to transmit his teachings to the faithful ones, to the extent that updates through the Council documents and of the Latin American episcopate, and thus adapt the requirements of the fast changing society. It is the CF of 1978 which features changes and intention between the Catholic Church and State relations regarding the issue would operate from the period of military dictatorship / Esta pesquisa objetivou investigar as Campanhas da Fraternidade onde está expresso o discurso da Igreja Católica no Brasil sobre a questão do trabalho, sabendo que a CF é um instrumento de comunicação que gera conjuntura entre os fiéis e a hierarquia católica.

LA FRATERNITA' COME PRINCIPIO GIURIDICO: UNA PROSPETTIVA DE IURE CONDITO E DE IURE CONDENDO / La fraternità come principio giuridico:una prospettiva de iure condito e de iure condendo

VITA, ILENIA 13 May 2014 (has links)
The distance between the law and the “horizon“ fraternity is felt not only in the “academic circles“ but also in the collective imagination. The aim of this dissertation is to prove the theoretical and practical possibility to combine these dimensions apparently distant and incompatible: the law, in particular public law, and the principle of fraternity. After analyzing the difficulties and the fundamental objections to this idea, the dissertation proposes some solutions and paths to search for a dialogue, that is, to solve the ostensible contradiction between the spontaneity of fraternity and the typical coercive character of law. The basis used to prove the sustained idea is the Italian Constitution and specifically the period of its birth. The background is the firm belief that in order to understand the theoretical and practical importance of the juridical principle of fraternity it's always necessary to start from the fraternal relationships experienced in the daily life.

Pedagogiska imperativ och sociala nätverk i svensk medborgarbildning 1812−1828 / Educational Imperatives and Social Networks in Swedish Civic Formation 1812−1828

Neidenmark, Thomas January 2011 (has links)
This thesis in the History of Education studies the pedagogization of Swedish society from 1812–1828. These ambitions were promoted by state officials and educational innovators who were tightly knit through social networks. The research questions are: Why did these individuals organize themselves the way they did in the field of education? Which practices of external communication and interaction within associations existed? Which impact did these practices of external communication and internal interaction have on the educational debate? Civic formation is analyzed through the activity or practices identified in the diffusion of useful knowledge, self-education, schools, and educational policies. Arguments for civic formation, educational imperatives, are reflected in new words and new schools. The imperatives are in part an outcome of social networking studied through affiliations to associations, newspapers and governing boards. Hence, a great number of affiliations have been organized in a new and advanced web-based application. Papers and associations were important to in dissolving feudal society, and as key ingredients for the emancipation of the middle class, they gradually gained more influence upon society. The educational reformers’ involvement in papers and societies were important for them coining new Swedish words with educational importance: it was an external communicative practice. Involvement in associations is somewhat more internal and has been studied as leading to social interaction. This interaction is studied as social capital through social network analysis. This revealed focal points on the individual level which made a significant contribution to the educational debate. These were social networks sustained by the spirit of Enlightenment and emancipation. What has long been unrecognized in the History of Education is presented as important features in this thesis through the analysis of social networks.

Čím přispěla teologie kardinála Schwarzenberga na vatikánských koncilech? / The contribution theology Cardinal Schwarzenberg Vatican Council?

GRONES, Martin January 2014 (has links)
Initial idea of this work: " The contribution theology Cardinal Schwarzenberg Vatican Council? , The de facto theological story that " started " at the September provincial council in Prague ( 1860) , and over the First Vatican Council ( 1869-1870 ) , the place - the fundamental ideas of Cardinal Schwarzenberg - up to II . Vatican Council (1962-1965). We must ask ourselves what was the theology of Cardinal Schwarzenberg exceptional and why has the range and in the decades after the First Vatican Council. These questions and many others began to form this work. Response them in three circuits . The first issue is the milieu of contemporary Czech society, which entails " Czech question" because it has the attributes of the ideas of Jan Hus, who was one of the requirements to be " God's word could freely proclaim," which Cardinal Schwarzenberg sees as one of the keys to their pastoral care to address the overall " religiously sentient inhabitants " to what is now called ecumenism, and the Cardinal called her a contemporary "family faith." So the family home environment to be introduced to the "family environment" of the Church, which "does not divide, but integrates" . The second area is the communion of the Catholic congregation, which already carries specific nature of faith , which gives information on the human , not as individuals , but persons as believers lives and moves "in communion" communion sanctorum "that accompanies the believer personally and for boundaries of the church (the Church). Therefore, even in sacred spaces Divine Liturgy promotes "Discourse in the middle of the Mass," because it helps ensure that a person liturgically activated in "upgrade of Church's thinking" (that later " aggiornamento ") in the world. The third issue is the consistency believer in education as Cardinal Schwarzenberg has a graduate character: discipline, teaching and cultivating. In this characteristic "inculcation" of a person into a "divine milieu" of humanity is in the attributes of participation in "completing the world that God created Undone", as taught by A. Günther , and one has a personal interest in "his physiognomy ." All three themes should help understanding " personal infallibility of the Pope," which is not deistic static, is based on the individual, but carries the story of spiritual formation tradition of the whole Church, in whose center is the Christological fraternity, to which the " indoctrinated " hierarchy of jurisdiction, which cannot be separated from each other, but in accepting the structure of the human being shed on the integral concept of the Catholic Church as organic. Which took place in the contemporary modification to the II. Vatican Council.

The present study aims to contrast the Church Social Doctrine presence in assistance action, undertaken by CNBB, through the Fraternity Campaigns from the years 1986, 2002 and 2007, dealing specifically with the land‟s issue. We chose the land‟s theme because we observed that the private property issue is the beginning and the end of the doctrine question, whose design shape today's society such as that expressed need for the creation of the divine plan on Earth, through actions would lead to building a society that, would take the concern for the comfort. The documents that underlie our research are beyond the basic texts and documentation relating to Campaigns, the papal encyclicals and diverse bibliography that conveys the main Catholic Social Doctrine points, and authors who, somehow, have discussed issues raised by the doctrine
