Negotiating Desire: Resisting, Reimagining and Reinscribing Normalized Sexuality and Gender in Fan Fiction

Fowler, Charity A 01 January 2017 (has links)
Fan studies has examined how fan fiction resists heteronormativity by challenging depictions of gender and sexuality, but to date, this inquiry has focused disproportionately on slash, to the exclusion of other genres of fan fiction. Additionally, scholars disagree about slash’s subversive effects by setting up a seemingly stable dichotomy—subversive vs. misogynistic—where one does not necessarily exist. In this project, I examine multiple genres of fan fiction—namely, slash arising from bromances; femslash from female friendships; incestuous fan fiction from dysfunctional familial relationships; and polyamorous fics. I chose fics from four televisions shows—NBC’s Revolution, MTV’s Teen Wolf, the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, and its spin-off, The Originals—and closely read them to identify patterns in their representations of gender and sexuality and how they connect to the source texts. Taking a dialogic “both/and” approach, I argue that critics claiming that slash is often not subversive are right to a point, but miss a key potential of fan fiction: its ability to evoke possibility—for new endings, relationships, and sexualities. Heteronormativity often asserts itself in endings; queerness plays in the middles and margins. So, too, does fan fiction. While some individual fics may reinforce elements of heteronormativity, many also actively question and transgress norms of gender, sexuality and love. Further, they embrace fluidity and possibility, and engage with the source texts and larger culture around them in a way that provides a subversive interpretation of both and offers insight into the function of the constructed nature of institutionalized heterosexuality.

Homepage de fanfictions: um estudo bidimensional de gênero na concepção sociorretórica / A study of a fanfiction homepage: digital genres of the socio-rhetorical concept

Moraes, Elaine Valencise Hidalgo de 11 December 2009 (has links)

Specific objectives include: to understand the organisation of the admiring readers and writers of online fanfictions, checking how such groups might fall under the Swales (1990) concept of discourse communities, which he applies to academic communities; to outline a characterization of a fanfiction website and the existing involvement among its users; to discuss the situational context within which the digital fanfiction activities evolve; and to see if Askehave and Nielsen's (2004) bidimentional model of analysis of web files can be applied to the homepage of a fanfiction website. The corpus is the result of a research of ethnographic nature carried out on a specific fanfiction website: Fanfic Addiction. Focus falls primarily on the application of the Swales (1990) criteria of discourse communities to the website user group and on the application of Bhatia's (1993) methodology to the study of textual genres. Attention then shifts to the study of the website homepage using Askehave and Nielsen's (2004) model for digital genres. This study shows that readers and writers of Fanfic Addiction, according to Swales (1990) criteria, are a discourse community, even if they do not constitute an academic community. This study also yields other significant insights, namely the light shed on the context of production of fanfictions, the involvement between admiring readers and writers, and the historical aspects pertaining to such activity. With regards to the study of the fanfiction homepage, it was also observed the feasibility of applying to this genre of website the bidimentional model of analysis, in which the close relationship between the digital environment and textual genres is considered / Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo geral analisar uma homepage de um website que abriga fanfictions histórias escritas por fãs sob a perspectiva dos estudos sócio-retóricos de gêneros textuais.

A construção da autoria compartilhada no universo da fanfiction / The production of shared authorship in the world of fanfiction

Barros, Maria Rita 22 October 2009 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Maria Rita Barros.pdf: 1700513 bytes, checksum: 6cfc2bb46fcdbb0bc4808ea52ce867ac (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-10-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This essay focuses on the production written by fans that use digital technology to upload their work, known in cyberspace as fanfics. These fans are anonymous people who submit their texts, their fanfics, to the screening of proofreaders and readers who united by the same literary taste and/or by the desire to improve their writing style feedback on, and take part in, each others´ work. A look at different cyber environments, particularly blogs and websites, reveals that fanfics have become a new type of textual creation. Our aim is to describe the universe within which fanfics, or fanfictions, exist so as to show how their shared authorship is built. Unlike school students, fanfic writers place themselves as the subject of their text, assume their authorship when they position themselves vis-a-vis a text, and, by making use of different genres, do not let the dialogue end. In order to penetrate the nature of such fans, who become authors themselves, or co-authors of an original work, we fall back on the observations made by theorists of Social Discourse Analysis. Our conclusion is that in cyberspace there is a new space for textual production, wherein it is possible to dialogue, (re) create, and for fanfics to present a smooth conception of authorship since they spring from an existing idea already accepted in the publishing universe and even by other media types. The fanfic writer places himself as a co-author of an original published work by getting hold of an idea that already exists, of a style, and starts a new game. Drawn by the voice of the original author, he seeks to emulate the same features, the same style, so as to find new players/readers who wish to share and discuss with him his authorship / Esta dissertação trata da produção escrita elaborada por fãs que usam a tecnologia digital para postarem seus textos, conhecidos no ciberespaço como fanfics.

Pontén, Joon January 2011 (has links)

Young Adult Literature 2.0: Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight and Digital Age Literary Practices

Skinner, Leah C. M. 06 1900 (has links)
This study examines the progress of young adult (YA) literature in the twenty-first century, as influenced by Web 2.0 social networking technology and sliding structural temporalities of age and maturity in these digital times. The context is Stephenie Meyer’s popular Twilight saga, a pioneering example of an author purposefully engaging with online social networking communities and there encouraging derivative creativity, including Twilight fan fiction. This successful integration of YA literature with Web 2.0 is considered by first appraising tensions between traditional theoretical notions of the genre (and its readers) and contemporary manifestations of the same. Second is an investigation of the genre’s evolving readership and textual practices using the Twilight series, focusing on literary activities of Digital Natives (young adults) in online social arenas. A concentration on the integration of national identity into Canadian Twilight fan fiction examines such evolving practices in reference to an American product (a threat of Americanization) being re-coded in a Canadian reader’s personal, public and online spaces.
