Single parent attachment styles and its relationship with teenage pregnancy in NamibiaNwagboso, Lilian Ngozi 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Teenage pregnancy is a growing social concern in Namibia. In 2013, 19% of teenagers fell pregnant (MoHSS, 2014). Implications are enormous including economic, social and health issues. Attachment between parents and children is important in child development and enduring through life. The study aims to examine whether attachment styles of single parents increase the risk of teenage pregnancy in their daughters. The research used a quantitative method with a sample of 100 teenage girls in Windhoek, Namibia, completing the IPPA and Questionnaire to measure attachment and biographical data. Results analysis in this study suggests that teenagers from two-parents families are more likely to be securely attached (65%) and less likely to get pregnant as teenagers. On the other hand teenagers from single parent families are more likely to be insecurely attached (44%) and are more likely to get pregnant as teenagers. Thus, the attachment style predicted teenage pregnancy, particularly in single parent families where insecure attachment was more prominent. Recommendations for future research and for the government and other stake holders were provided. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Lägersmål och lönskalägen i Bergslagen 1771-1830 / Premarital Crimes and the Penalties, Bergslagen 1771-1830Rickan, Susann January 2012 (has links)
Barnamordsplakatet (a Infanticide Proclamation) of 1778 was a circular allowing unmarried mothers to give birth at an undisclosed location without giving up the name of the father. The proclamation was supposed to ease the situation for the unwed mother in Sweden. The aim was to investigate whether women in Assembly of Hällefors, far from government and close to remote forest Finnskogen, was affected by the Infanticide Proclamation, between 1771 and 1830. Case studies has been done on people who had illegitimate children, if they were convicted, what the crime was and what the punishment was. The investigation is made at a local level and compared against national analyzes on the same theme. A lot of illegitimate children were born in Grythyttan nearby and slightly less in Hällefors, compared to other places of Sweden. Mothers and fathers were convicted in the district court for crimes, including, sexual intercourse between unmarried persons. More women than men were convicted. The cases in court with convicted for the second time, was culminating between 1800 and 1810. Infanticide Proclamation is immediately adapted in court. People's behavior changed before the law took effect when the amount of born illegitimate children outnumbered the amount of convicted mothers.

Since sleep and internalizing and externalizing problems in childhood are associated with several aspects of social, emotional and cognitive development, it appears essential to study these two indicators of self-regulation in children and to understand the factors that contribute to their emergence. The overall objective of the thesis was to better understand the factors associated with the development of psychophysiological self-regulation, as measured by the quality of child sleep, as well as emotional and behavioural self-regulation, as indicated by the presence of internalizing and externalizing symptoms in children.
The first article aimed to examine the prospective and longitudinal links between the quality of mother-child and father-child interactions and preschoolers’ sleep. Three dimensions of maternal interactive behavior were considered with 70 mother-child dyads, while the quality of father-child interactions was assessed among 41 of these families. At 12 months, maternal mind-mindedness and maternal sensitivity were rated. Maternal autonomy support was assessed at 15 months and the quality of father-child interactions was scored at 18 months. Children’s sleep was assessed at 3 and 4 years using a sleep diary completed by mothers during three consecutive days. Results indicated that after controlling for family SES and daycare attendance, the quality of both mother-infant and father-infant interactions was related to children’s proportions of night-time sleep at preschool age.
The second article aimed to examine infant sleep as a moderator of the relation between maternal sensitivity and child externalizing and internalizing symptoms, in a prospective longitudinal design. 55 infants took part in two assessments, at 1 and 4 years. Maternal sensitivity was rated at 1 year, based on observations performed throughout a home visit. Infant sleep was assessed at 1 year as well, using a sleep diary completed by mothers. At 4 years, mothers completed the Child Behavior Checklist to assess children’s internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Results indicated that maternal sensitivity interacted with infant sleep duration, such that there were negative relations between sensitivity and subsequent internalizing and externalizing symptoms only for children who slept more at night. The results presented in both articles are discussed along with their theoretical and clinical implications.

The gender straightjacket: a qualitative investigation of a group of South African adolescent males' cognitive schemata for masculinity and gender rolesBantjes, Jason Robert 30 November 2004 (has links)
A surge of "masculinity in crisis" discourse suggests that men are primarily responsible for lawlessness, social mayhem, violence and other forms of psycho- and socio-pathology. This crisis is attributed, in part, to hegemonic models of masculinity which restrict men to certain modes of behaviour and specific roles in society. This study investigates the content of a group of South African adolescent males' cognitive schemata for masculinity and gender roles. A qualitative mode of enquiry was used to identify the beliefs held by participants about manhood and gender roles. The findings of this study affirm that a hegemonic model of masculinity exists is the sub-culture of South African society represented by the participants and suggests that hegemonic masculinity in South African is both restrictive and damaging to men and society. / Psychology / M. Vivre l'evangile de Paix parmi les Musulmans a l'est de la Republique du Congo : une lecture missionale du sermon sur la Montagne / Living the gospel of peace among Muslims in the East of the democratic republic of Congo : a missional reading of the sermon on the mountGibungula, Philemon Beghela 11 1900 (has links)
Text in French / This thesis studies the relations between Christians and Muslim in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in the light of the Sermon on the Mount. Both communities, each from its own side, claim to have received the divine message to proclaim to all humanity. In the eastern DRC, as elsewhere, the encounter between these two communities often causes tension and conflict, leading to violence. These facts were established by analyzing the general context in the East since the end of the 19th century until today. The war at the end of the 19th century, which saw anti-slavery groups pitted against Arabs and their Islamic allies, is seen as one of the main original causes of the conflict. The memories of that war revive the spirit of the crusades in the Middle Ages. This has affected the relationship between the two communities. Fear of the other drives the defence mechanism that produces violence.
The strategy to restore peace is an irenic approach based on the identity of the disciples as peace builders, true descendants of Abraham, agents of surpassing justice, and participants in the new humanity. Concretely, the disciples of Jesus should work for a mission that has the following simultaneous features: making peace with a view to establishing the reign of God; practising Abrahamic hospitality by opening oneself even to one‟s enemies; building the home of justice that takes into account the values of Shari‟ah and Christian virtues to create a pluralistic world; taking upon itself the promotion of intercultural and interreligious dialogue.
The mission of peace is the main task. It is an attempt to restore broken relations and an effort at reconciliation. It establishes peace as equally important as other dimensions of mission, but it does not constitute the totality of mission. It is one dimension of the salvation of humanity and of the re-establishment of the reign of God on earth. Peace is about more than the cessation of hostilities or the absence of war; it refers to shalom, or total peace. This is the gospel of peace announced by Jesus Christ.
Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.Th. (Missiology)

Die konstitusionele implikasie van Fraser V Children's Court, Pretoria North 1997 2 SA 261 (CC)Coetzee, Linden 08 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans, abstract in English / Writer investigates the constitutionality of section 18(4)(d) of the Child Care Act 74 of 1983
against the backdrop of the South African common law and the common law of comparative legal
systems. In the South Africa law the mother of an illegitimate child has guardianship. The natural
father does not have parental power which weakens his legal position.
In analysing the judgement of the Constitutional Court, writer criticises the court for stating that
in the case of a newborn baby the kind of discrimination which section 18( 4 )( d) authorises against
a natural father may be justifiable in the initial period after the child is born.
The constitutional position of the natural father in American jurisprudence is discussed at length.
Writer concludes that the natural father has to take positive steps to vest a right to be heard in an adoption application. Proposals for legal reform are also made. / Private Law / LL. M. (Law)

The role of the emotional father-son relationship in the self-concept formation of adolescent boys in secondary schoolsPitsoane, Enid Manyaku January 1900 (has links)
The study investigated adolescent boys who experienced behavioural problems at school and the possible causes for these phenomena. It was evident that the adolescent boys who experienced behavioural problems were found to lack emotional connections with others due to their fathers’ absence and lack of positive attachment. A total of 403 adolescent boys from various schools in the Tshwane districts were used in the sample group. This quantitative study employed the use of a quantitative questionnaire as a means of data collection that included qualitative open-ended question as a method to enrich the quantitative data and obtain insight into the life world functioning and experience of the participants. The primary aim of the research study was to determine the emotional relationship between fathers and sons within the sample group. Secondly, the study sought to investigate how this emotional relationship affects the adolescent boy’s self-concept, resilience and motivational aspects in his daily functioning. The approach to quantitative data analysis was by means of descriptive statistical analysis. The findings revealed that emotionally absent fathers indeed impact negatively on the adolescent boys’ resilience and motivational aspects of their functioning and that a father’s absence has a significant influence on the behaviours of adolescent boys in relation to motivation and resilience. However, the research results also revealed that an emotionally absent father does not significantly affect the self–concept of an adolescent boy. Finally, an intervention programme was developed to assist and guide fathers and adolescent boys to improve their relationship with one another. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. [en] DUG ADDICTION AND PSYCHOANALYSIS / [pt] AS TOXICOMANIAS NA CLÍNICA PSICANALÍTICAALEXANDRA DE GOUVEA VIANNA 21 February 2017 (has links)
No primeiro capítulo,
morte.
[en] The thesis presents a study of addictions through the psychoanalytic point
of view. The view that presides the study is that the fellow addict runs an appeal
to the Other through the use of the drug to make the paternal function present.
From this perspective, the drug contains a message addressed to another so that a
cut should be operated in the relationship without limits built with the drug. It
will not treat the organic effects produced by the use of the substance, but the
unique function that the drug might occupy a person. In the first chapter, the
introduction, the object of the work will be circumscribed: the addictions. In the
second chapter it will examine the phenomenon of drugs in perversion, in neurosis
and psychosis. In the third chapter, it will launch a glimpse into the drug through
the concepts of superego, drive satisfaction, ego ideal and the death drive. In the
fourth chapter it will present the construction of dependence relations in
addictions and how drug use can serve as a call to a father. We will also study the
signifier in the dialectic of the desire in order to locate the place of the drug to the
addict. Then, assuming that the weakness or ineffectiveness of the paternal
function provides the compulsion to object drug as a way to solve the anguish
caused by the effects of castration, it will investigate the drug problem from the
significant Name of the Father and the paternal metaphor.

Observational fear learning is especially relevant during childhood, a period during which many fears develop and where the familial environment is salient. Parent-child relationship modulates fear reactions in children, but its impact on observational fear learning in the context of the familial environment has not been investigated. This master’s thesis therefore examined whether the mother-child and father-child relationship quality as well as its interaction with children’s sex influence observational fear learning. Sixty parent-child dyads were recruited. The relationship with each parent was assessed by a self-report questionnaire completed by the children (8 to 12 years old). Children first watched a video of their parent undergoing a fear conditioning procedure, where one stimulus (CS+Parent) was paired with a shock and one was presented alone (CS-). Then, children watched a video of a stranger undergoing a similar protocol except that a different stimulus was paired with the shock (CS+Stranger). Subsequently, the three stimuli were directly presented to children. Fear levels were measured by skin conductance responses. The effect of the father-child relationship quality on fear levels for the CS+Parent was moderated by children’s sex, where girls having a more secure relationship with their father exhibited lower fear levels. The mother-child relationship quality had no impact on the children’s fear levels. These results suggest that the relationship with the father influences how girls respond to fear-related stimuli within the family environment. These data highlight the existence of some protective factors that might influence the vulnerability of developing fear-related psychopathologies.
