Nature Will Not Be Ignored : Ecology and Neoliberalism in the Cinema of Bong Joon-ho

Gregory, Christian January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the filmography of Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho [Pong Chun-ho], and to provide a limited textual analysis of each film divided across two categories: the “explicitly ecological” and “implicitly ecological”. The intent is to, by viewing all of Bong’s films leading up to his critical and commercial success Parasite, argue that Parasite is as much an environmental film as it is critical of neoliberalism and globalization, both of which are common readings of not only Parasite, but all of Bong’s work. The findings are that while Parasite avoids overt and exaggerated displays of eco-destruction visible in his Sci-fi films, the film still displays a conscious environmental awareness. The rainstorm featured in the second act of the film can be viewed not only through a local lens as an example of the dichotomy between wealthy and poor families in South Korea as it pertains to environmental crises, but as a microcosm of how climate change stands to impact the financially disenfranchised across the globe as climate shifts continue to grow.

A Comprehensive Taxonomy of Attacks and Mitigations in IoT Wi-Fi Networks : physical and data-link layer

Almjamai, Sarmed January 2022 (has links)
The number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices is rising and Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) networks are still widely used in IoT networks. Security protocols such as Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) are still in use in most Wi-Fi networks, but Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3) is making its way as the new security standard. These security protocols are crucial in Wi-Fi networks with energy and memory-constrained devices because of adversaries that could breach confidentiality, integrity, and availability of networks through various attacks. Many research papers exist on single Wi-Fi attacks, and the strengths and weaknesses of security protocols and Wi-Fi standards. This thesis aims to provide a detailed overview of Wi-Fi attacks and corresponding mitigation techniques against IoT Wi-Fi networks in a comprehensive taxonomy. In addition tools are mentioned for each Wi-Fi attack that allows, e.g., professionals or network administrators to test the chosen Wi-Fi attacks against their IoT networks. Four types of attack (categories) were defined, Man-in-the-Middle (MitM), Key-recovery, Traffic Decryption, and Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. A set of Wi-Fi attack features were defined and decribed. The features included the security protocol and security mode, the layer (physical or data-link) that an attack targets, and the network component interaction required to allow a Wi-Fi attack to execute successfully. In total, 20 Wi-Fi attacks were selected with relevance to IoT in Wi-Fi networks based on some criteria. Additonally, each Wi-Fi attack consist of a description of possible consequences/results an adversary can achieve, such as eavesdropping, data theft, key recovery, and many more. Flow charts were also added to give the reader a visual perspective on how an attack works. As a result, tables were created for each relevant security protocol and the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) layers to create a overview of mitigations and available tools for each attack. Furthermore, WPA3 was discussed on how it solves some shortcomings of WPA2 but has vulnerabilities of it own that lie in the design of the 4-way and dragonfly handshake itself. In conclusion, development and proper vulnerability tests on the Wi-Fi standards and security protocols have to be conducted to improve and reduce the possibility of current and upcoming vulnerabilities.

"We Weren't Kidding": Prediction as Ideology in American Pulp Science Fiction, 1938-1949

Forte, Joseph A. 14 June 2010 (has links)
In 1971, Isaac Asimov observed in humanity, a science-important society. For this he credited the man who had been his editor in the 1940s during the period known as the golden age of American science fiction, John W. Campbell, Jr. Campbell was editor of Astounding Science-Fiction, the magazine that launched both Asimov's career and the golden age, from 1938 until his death in 1971. Campbell and his authors set the foundation for the modern sci-fi, cementing genre distinction by the application of plausible technological speculation. Campbell assumed the science-important society that Asimov found thirty years later, attributing sci-fi ascendance during the golden age a particular compatibility with that cultural context. On another level, sci-fi's compatibility with "science-important" tendencies during the first half of the twentieth-century betrayed a deeper agreement with the social structures that fueled those tendencies and reflected an explication of modernity on capitalist terms. Tethered to an imperative of plausibly extrapolated technology within an American context, sci-fi authors retained the social underpinnings of that context. In this thesis, I perform a textual analysis of stories published in Astounding during the 1940s, following the sci-fi as it grew into a mainstream cultural product. In this, I prioritize not the intentions of authors to advance explicit themes or speculations. Rather, I allow the authors' direction of reader sympathy to suggest the way that favored characterizations advanced ideological bias. Sci-fi authors supported a route to success via individualistic, competitive, and private enterprise. They supported an American capitalistic conveyance of modernity. / Master of Arts

Eavesdropping Attacks on Modern-Day Connected Vehicles and Their Ramifications / Avlyssningsattacker på moderna uppkopplade bilar och deras följder

Bakhshiyeva, Afruz, Berefelt, Gabriel January 2022 (has links)
Vehicles today are becoming increasingly more connected. Most cars are equipped with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities and the ability to connect to the internet via a cellular modem. This increase in connectivity opens up new attack surfaces for hackers to exploit. This paper aims to study the security of three different cars, a Tesla Model 3 (2020), an MG Marvel R (2021) and a Volvo V90 (2017), in regards to three different eavesdropping attacks. The performed attacks were a port scan of the vehicles, a relay attack of the key fobs and a MITM attack. The study discovered some security risks and discrepancies between the vehicles, especially regarding the open ports and the relay attack. This hopefully promotes further discussion on the importance of cybersecurity in connected vehicles.

探討N-甲基-D-天門冬胺酸受體在時距相關的操作式制約行為與空間工作記憶的角色:memantine的神經心理藥理學機制 / Investigation of the role of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors on temporal operant behavior and spatial working memory: the underlying neuropsychopharmacological mechanisms of memantine

Unknown Date (has links)
The neural basis of cognitive enhancement is one of the intriguing topics in neuroscience research; however, the underlying neural mechanisms remain to be elucidated. This study examined the effects of memantine, a non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist which is used to treat Alzheimer’s disease in clinic, on operant behaviors and spatial working memory. In Experiment 1, using the differential reinforcement for low-rate-response 10 sec (DRL 10s) and the fixed-interval 30 sec (FI 30s) operant tasks, and with the manipulation of two different training regimens (continuous vs. intermittent) in the acquisition phase, the effects of memantine were evaluated in three stages of behavioral tests including the performance (right after the end of 15-day acquisition), the extinction, and the spontaneous recovery (after the extinction). In Experiment 2, memantine were tested in the subjects with different level of baseline performance (good vs. bad) on the distinctive patterns of operant responding in four different groups which received DRL 10s and FI 30s with different training regimens; indicating that behavioral task and training background are critical to the operant performance of temporal operant behaviors. Such behavioral outcomes led the dissociable effects of memantine appeared in between the four groups as tested in all three different stages. The results of Experiment 2 showed a profound improvement of the correct responses rate on spatial working memory in the low-baseline group as compared to the higher-baseline group. With a pretreatment of memantine (5 mg/kg), brain tissues in five selected areas were collected for western blot assays of ERK 1, ERK 2, and CREB. The results only revealed a significant increase of ERK 1 phosphorylation in the dorsal striatum. Together, the effects of memantine to improve cognition-associated processes in the temporal operant behaviors and the baseline of performance, and the present observation of cognition-enhancing effects of memantine may be resulted by the ERK 1 phosphorylation in the dorsal striatum.

Trustworthiness, diversity and inference in recommendation systems

Chen, Cheng 28 September 2016 (has links)
Recommendation systems are information filtering systems that help users effectively and efficiently explore large amount of information and identify items of interest. Accurate predictions of users' interests improve user satisfaction and are beneficial to business or service providers. Researchers have been making tremendous efforts to improve the accuracy of recommendations. Emerging trends of technologies and application scenarios, however, lead to challenges other than accuracy for recommendation systems. Three new challenges include: (1) opinion spam results in untrustworthy content and makes recommendations deceptive; (2) users prefer diversified content; (3) in some applications user behavior data may not be available to infer users' preference. This thesis tackles the above challenges. We identify features of untrustworthy commercial campaigns on a question and answer website, and adopt machine learning-based techniques to implement an adaptive detection system which automatically detects commercial campaigns. We incorporate diversity requirements into a classic theoretical model and develop efficient algorithms with performance guarantees. We propose a novel and robust approach to infer user preference profile from recommendations using copula models. The proposed approach can offer in-depth business intelligence for physical stores that depend on Wi-Fi hotspots for mobile advertisement.

Foram entrevistados professores do The John Lewis Warfield Center for African and African American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin – USA e analisada a produção bibliográfica desse país sobre a temática. / This dissertation has the central concern with the affirmative actions in the Brazilian society and problematizes: "What meanings do the affirmative actions have to former students of the Instituto Metodista Porto Alegre (IPA-RS)?" Its objective was to understand, grasp, and analyze the affirmative actions role and/or meaning to former students of this Brazilian private college institution, affiliated to the Centro Ecumênico de Cultura Negra (CECUNE). Secondly it aimed at knowing the African ancestrality through a systematic study; at approaching the relations between race/ethnicity and social class; at grasping the path/process of Black people´s struggles in Rio Grande do Sul and in Brazil; at analyzing the ways of those actions in the world, specifically in Brazil and in the United States. A case study was performed – in qualitative terms – by collecting data through questionnaires, interviews, meetings with former students, and analysis of documents from the research sites. Were also interviewed professors of The John Lewis Warfield Center for African and African American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin – USA and analyzed the bibliographic works about the thematic produced in this country. As a result, were found daily local habits arisen from the Africans past, which bring contributions to our society; in slavery times, maroon struggles emerged to abolish racial inequalities. Affirmative actions concepts differ – in ampleness and goals – in education, in labor market and in the diversity of social contact in social spaces. The conclusion was that race-ethnicity-social class relations form the tripod where the meanings of affirmative actions to former students are highlighted: professional future; family and personal future; a dream fulfillment; ways of identity reconstruction; unique opportunity; self-esteem improvement; socioeconomic progress, cultural withdrawal and life perspective.
