Hjältarna i kvartsfinalen mot kritiserade bronsmedaljörer : En kvalitativ textanalys om gestaltningar av herr- och damlandslaget i fotboll vid vinst och förlust under VM

Denna uppsats undersöker hur Sveriges herr- och damlandslag i fotboll representerades i media under VM 2018 och VM 2023. Syftet med studien var att bidra med ökad förståelse och kunskap om hur mediegestaltningen ser ut och hur gestaltningsmönster kan variera beroende på kön och prestation. Studien använde kvalitativ textanalys och integrerade gestaltningsteori, dagordningsteori och genusteori för att analysera hur lagen porträtteras i media. Resultaten visade på skillnader i representation mellan herr- och damlandslaget. Herrlandslaget fick mer uppmärksamhet och beröm i media, medan damlandslaget ofta fick mindre positiva inslag och i stället kritik. Vid både seger och förlust blev herrarna berömda utifrån empirin medan damerna fick kritik vid både seger och förlust. Studien visade också på hur medierna kan påverka vår uppfattning av idrott och kön. Genom att välja vad som ska uppmärksammas och hur det ska gestaltas kan medierna påverka hur vi tolkar och förstår idrott och kön. Studien bidrog med insikt i hur media kan påverka vår uppfattning av idrott och kön och betonar vikten av att fortsätta undersöka och utmana ojämlikheter i mediebevakningen av idrott. Studien betonar även jämställdhet som en viktig aspekt i mediebevakningen. / This study aims to analyze the media representation of Sweden's men's and women's national football teams during the 2018 men's World Cup and 2023 women's World Cup through a qualitative content analysis of articles from two newspaper tabloids which are Aftonbladet and Expressen. By integrating the framing theory, agenda-setting theory, gender theory and representation into the analysis, themes, and patterns in how the teams were portrayed in the media were identified. The results show differences in how the men's and women's teams were depicted, as well as how victory and defeat affected media representation. The discussion focuses on methodological considerations, the relevance of the results, and suggestions for future research in the field. The media representation of Sweden's men's national football team appears to be more positive even though they did not achieve any medal in their respective tournament meanwhile Sweden's women's national football team achieved a bronze medal.

Gender Roles and the Single-Sex Environment: The Effects of Single-Sex Schooling on Gender Role Attitudes and Life Plan

The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether or not the single-sex environment has an effect on the gender role perceptions and life paths of young women. Students were selected from two urban high schools, one all-girls and one coeducational. The schools themselves are located a short distance from each other to ensure consistency in regards to socioeconomic status. This study used a mixed methods analysis. Female students in their senior year of high school were surveyed using a gender role perception inventory (Prasad & Baron, 2009). Ten students from the original sample, five from each site, were then selected for in-depth, face-to-face interviews. Results indicate that there is little difference in gender role perception and life path between the two samples. The only exception is in the area of gender role reversal, which favors the single-sex school. As such, students from the single-sex school are more likely to indicate comfort with the inversion of conventional gender roles. In terms of life path, no significant difference between the two groups was found in terms of traditional, non-traditional, and gender-neutral career plans. Interviews with students from both sites reveal two major differences thematically. Students in the single-sex school reported that the decision to attend an all-girls school was mostly made by their parents, while students in the coeducational school reported making the decision themselves. The second difference between the two environments is that students in the single-sex school reported that they and their peers in the school feel quite comfortable acting “themselves” because of the lack of males in the environment. The students in the coeducational school corroborated that sentiment by expressing the tendency of their female peers to act differently in the presence of male peers. The results of this study do not conclusively prove that the single-sex environment is beneficial for the formation of non-traditional gender role perception and life path, with the exception of the reversal finding. The interviews, however, may indicate that the students in the single-sex environment have an advantage in terms of comfort because of the absence of their opposite sex peers. Indisputably, this study confirms that more research is needed in the area of single-sex education for females. / Educational Leadership

“I must love her more”: Black South African male partners’ perceptions of breast cancer and their role in their partner’s access to health care in Diepsloot, Johannesburg

Background: In South Africa (SA), women with breast cancer (BC) present to the health care system at advanced stages of the disease, resulting in poor prognosis. Limited awareness of the disease, large distances to health care centers, and lack of affordable transportation have all been implicated as factors delaying presentation. In addition, women in SA have limited social and financial independence, which may make it difficult for them to resolve their own health care needs. Despite this, little is known about what South African male partners know about breast cancer and what role they play in their partner’s access to health care. Methods: This interpretive qualitative case study, guided by the theoretical framework of hegemonic masculinity(ies), used semi-structured interviews to investigate perceptions and knowledge of BC and gender norms in regards to health care access in a group of black South African males (n=20) in long-term heterosexual relationships living in a resource-poor setting. Interview data was analyzed using thematic analysis and compared to observational data collected through opportunities with local BC organizations. Results: Participants demonstrated very little knowledge of breast cancer and cancer in general. Some specific misconceptions about cancer are reported, including confusion between cancer and HIV. Participants were positive about receiving health care for cancer but are burdened by barriers to reaching care and a lack of access to information about the disease. The men describe themselves as playing an active, mostly positive role in their partner’s access to health care. They demonstrate perspectives about gender relations that defy hegemonic forms of masculinity. Conclusions: Major public health efforts are required to increase awareness of BC in order to encourage earlier presentation to the healthcare system. These efforts should recognize the importance of the male partner in women’s health issues. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc) / In South Africa, women with breast cancer often do not reach the conventional healthcare system until the disease has progressed significantly and chances of survival are poor. This occurs because of a lack of knowledge about the disease and large distances to health care centers. Furthermore, in the male-dominated society of South Africa, women have limited independence. Therefore, this study sought to determine what men in South African know about breast cancer and how they are involved in their partner’s access to health care. Interviews were conducted with 20 men living in a resource-poor setting. The men portrayed little knowledge and specific misconceptions about breast cancer and cancer in general. They appear to be playing an active and mostly positive role in their partner’s access to health care. Public health efforts should increase awareness of the disease and recognize the significant role of the male partner in women’s health issues.

The state of Maleness has received much attention in academic and public discourse of late. One such instance is the play Defending the Caveman, which depicts men in their ”natural” settings as Cavemen, thereby justifying Caveman-like behaviour. On the other hand, much writing exists that find men culpable of discrimination, violence and abuse towards others. Discourses like these have real effects on the ways in which men choose and act on their Maleness. Six men engaged in narrative therapeutic discussions in an attempt to share their stories of Maleness, to discuss how society constructs men, and to re-evaluate the Maleness chosen by the participants. / Practical Theology / M.Th. Studien undersöker hur könsroller gestaltas ur ett genusperspektiv i bilderboken Se upp för krokodilen! (Moroni & Eriksson, 2013). Syftet är att få djupare kunskaper om hur dessa skildringar speglar målen i läroplanen för förskolan om att motverka traditionella könsnormer och främja jämställdhet och likabehandling mellan könen. Forskare menar att bilderboken är ett användbart och didaktiskt verktyg för att fånga barns intressen och påverka deras tankegångar. Tidigare forskning (Kåreland, 2005) visar att könsstereotypa föreställningar lever kvar i en stor del av utbudet av barnböcker. I studien analyseras bilderboken Se upp för krokodilen! (Moroni & Eriksson, 2013) både utifrån bilder och text. Analysen fokuserar på karaktärernas yttre- och inre personskildringar, det vill säga, karaktärernas utseende, ansiktsuttryck, kroppsspråk respektive karaktärernas egenskaper och personligheter. Studiens resultat visar att karaktärerna i boken, till viss del avviker från de stereotypa föreställningar om vad som anses som maskulint och feminint, dock visar karaktärerna att de båda har egenskaper som kan representera båda könen. / The study examines how gender roles are portrayed from a gender perspective in the picture book Watch out for the crocodile! (Moroni & Eriksson, 2013). The aim is to get deeper knowledge about how these depictions reflect the goals of the Swedish syllabus for preschool that counteracts traditional gender norms and promote equality and equal treatment between the genders. Researchers consider that the picture book is a useful and didactic implement to capture childrens’ interests and influence their thoughts. Previous research (Kåreland, 2005) shows that gender-stereotyped conceptions persist in a large part of the range of children’s books. The study analyzes the picture book Watch out for the crocodile! (Moroni & Eriksson, 2013) both from photographs and text. The analysis focuses on the characters external and internal personal depictions, that is, the characters appearance, facial expressions, body language and the characters properties and personalities. The results of the study show that the characters in the book, partially differ from the stereotypical conceptions of what is considered as masculine and feminine. However, the characters show that they both have properties that can represent both sexes.

This study has been conducted as a literary analysis of four chapter books for children in the early years of compulsory school: Magister Tutnäsa, Vilken fullträff, Astrakan, Sune och tjejhatarligan, and Alva och Dum-Julia. The aim has been to analyse four teacher characters from a gender perspective. The study has focused on the teachers’ personal characteristics and whether these are typically female or male. Another aim has been to study how the character reinforces or runs against stereotyped gender patterns. Stephens’s and Andræ’s matrices of femininity and masculinity in literature have been used. The result shows that all the teachers in the analysed books are portrayed in a nuanced way. The characters display examples of both gender stereotypes and gender-transgressing characteristics. Stereotyped gender patterns are something that school is supposed to counteract. This can be done by working with literature. For this reason, another aim has been to show how teachers can purposefully use literature in the school’s work for gender equality.
