This thesis undertakes a close study of a single manuscript of the early 1320s, written at the priory of Fineshade, Northamptonshire. The manuscript contains a short chronicle and several documents related to the failed baronial rebellion of 1321-22. I argue that, in collaboration with the priory’s patrons, the Engayne family, the chronicler responds to the current situation with an attempt to create meaning from a time of crisis. In the process, he attempts to shape his material through patterns of style and thought inherited from both chronicle and hagiographical traditions, to make the present conform to the known and understood shape of the past. His success is limited by his inability to establish sufficient distance from traumatic events, a difficulty that many chroniclers seemed to encounter when they attempted to turn current events into meaningful historical narrative.

En este estudio, analizamos la obra piadosa de Huon le Roi de Cambrai, autor francés del S.XIII. Para ello, realizamos la traducción al castellano de Li Abc par ekivoche et li significations des letres, La Descrissions des relegions, Li Ave Maria en roumans, Li Regrès Nostre Dame y de Li Vie et li martyres mon signeur saint Quentin, el análisis estructural de estas, estudio del lenguaje simbólico empleado y de los recursos retóricos utilizados. En el análisis estructural, prestamos especial atención a la forma de composición de los alfabetos como género literario, al uso de proverbios y a las vidas de santos. / In this doctoral thesis, we analyse Huon le Roi de Cambrai's pious work, French author of the XIIIth century. In order to get it, we have gone into the translation into Spanish of Li Abc par ekivoche et li significations des letres, La Descrissions des relegions, Li Ave Maria en roumans, Li Regrès Nostre Dame and of Li Vie et li martyres mon signeur saint Quentin, the structural analysis of them, the study of symbolic language employed as well as their rhetorical resources.We pay an special attention, in the structural analysis, to the way of composing of the alphabets as a literary genre, the use of proverbs and the lives of saints. / Dans cette thèse de doctorat, on analyse l'oeuvre pieuse de Huon Le Roi de Cambrai, auteur français du XIIIe siècle. Tout d'abord, on réalise la traduction à l'espagnol de Li Abc par ekivoche et li significations des letres, La Descrissions des relegions, Li Ave Maria en roumans, Li Regrès Nostre Dame y de Li Vie et li martyres mon signeur saint Quentin, l'étude des formes de composition des αuvres, du langage symbolique y employé et des ressources rhétoriques y utilisées.En ce qui concerne l'analyse de la composition, on fait spécialement attention à la structure des alphabets comme genre littéraire, à l'utilisation de proverbes et aux vies de saints.

El presente trabajo pretende trazar una panorámica de los santos a los que se rinde o se ha rendido culto en la actual Diócesis de Cartagena-Murcia sobre la base de un trabajo de campo lo más riguroso que ha sido posible realizar. La hagiografía, que estudia a los más eximios de los creyentes, es de gran relieve en la vida cristiana y en el pensamiento de la Iglesia. Pero además la hagiografía a veces es un elemento relevante de la historia del cristianismo en una zona y de la vida misma en esa zona. Y con frecuencia el culto a los santos constituye un capítulo esencial de la historia local y de su devenir histórico. El catálogo de santos a los que se ha dado culto en una diócesis es algo importante. Tal es el objeto de esta tesis. / This paper pretends to draw a panorama of the saints worshipped in the present or the past in the Diocese of Cartagena-Murcia on the basis of a fieldwork as more rigorous as possible. Hagiography, the discipline that studies the most eminent of believers, is of great importance in the Christian life and in the thought of the Church. But, apart from that, it is also a significant element in the history of Christianity, and of life itself, in a given area. And often the cult of saints is an essential part of local history and its development. The catalogue of saints worshipped in a diocese is something important. Such is the aim of this thesis.

"Die Geschichte der ‚unschuldig verfolgten Frau‘ wurde im Mittelalter und darüber hinaus vielfach tradiert. Die Erzählung der ‚Leipziger Kleinepikhandschrift‘ Ms 1279 aus dem 15. Jahrhundert liefert eine Variante, die Crescentia als Heilige und Ärztin stilisiert. The late Victorian and Edwardian period saw ritual become increasingly important in political life. Towns and cities were involved in conscious efforts to construct and project attractive images of themselves. These images were intended to encourage a sense of civic patriotism. Ceremonies, honorific titles, public events and civic architecture were essays in the invention of tradition. However, historians have applied the concept of the invention of tradition unevenly. Previous research has dwelt on the construction of images. Perceptions of official images and responses to them have been overlooked. This thesis employs a model which recognises images as processes with foundaitons in human relationships. It evaluates images in terms of intentionality, power, context and participation. The participative dimension is of particular importance, because images aimed to instil a sense of civic patriotism which would encourage citizens to make emotional and financial investments in their communities. Liverpool attained the status of a city in 1880. The civic ideology of the city was dominated by images of commerce and by notions of Imperial duty and public service which celebrated commercial virtues. Many aspects of urban life were shaped by civic image. This study does not confine itself to public events and pageantry, instead it explores such spheres as municipal art policy, Liverpool's public health record, the attempts to extend the city boundaries, civic hagiography, the foundation of the University, women and the ideal of citizenship and the influence of football on civic identity to demonstrate the importance of images in the city's social, political and institutional history. The purpose of the thesis is three-fold: to suggest that civic image opens new perspectives on Liverpudlian history, to discover why there were more conscious attempts to construct civic image and to restore participation to the study of civic image by unravelling the connections between image and patriotism.

Uppsatsen utforskar legenden om den helige Antonius frestelse och det intryck helgonberättelsen lämnat på konsten. En ikonografisk metod används för att beskriva den litteratur som skapat och utvecklat berättelsen och ur detta systematiseras de motiv som sedan översatts till bildkonsten. Genom att analysera nio olika avbildningar av Antonius skapas en kronologisk följd över hur skildringarna genomgått en transformation sedan 1500-talet. / This thesis explores the legend of Saint Anthony and his temptations, and the impression his hagiography has left on the visual arts. An iconographic method is employed to investigate literature connected to the origin and later evolution of the story, which is used to classify motifs and concepts subsequently translated into painting. Via analysis of nine different depictions of Anthony, a chronological sequence is formed which lists the transformation these portrayals have undergone since the 16th century.
