Apparater, aktiviteter och aktörer : Lågenergiboende som resurs och restriktion för energiordningar / Appliances, activities and actors : Low energy housing - resources and restrictions for energy orders

Karresand, Helena January 2014 (has links)
Energy use in the residential sector has gradually increased and does not seem to be decreasing in spite of energy efficient appliances. By building low energy homes, housing companies are trying to reduce energy use, and to some extent they are succeeding, although the reductions are confined to heating and hot water. The aim of the thesis is to increase knowledge about household energy use in passive houses focusing on household activities. Interviews were conducted with households and public housing companies to investigate how material conditions, such as the flats and the appliances, affect daily activities in the home. Based on time-geographic concepts, a few everyday household projects are analyzed: cooking, care of clothing and recreation. The concept of energy orders is used to show that the realization of activities is influenced by various kinds of resources, including electricity, and the constraints and opportunities related to them. Since each household is unique, the energy orders also look different, which has an influence on the thermal comfort in the home. The passive house concept as such does not affect household activities in a profound way, but the households try to preserve and spread the spill heat generated in various activities by opening doors to rooms and doors of appliances such as the oven to distribute the heat throughout the flat. One conclusion from the thesis is that, because all households have unique energy orders, material resources also need to be adapted so that activities can be performed in a variety of ways. By taking advantage of household experiences, housing companies may gain access to new ideas and improve functionality so that material conditions suit household needs. By taking advantage of household experiences, housing companies may gain access to new ideas and improve functionality so that material conditions in energy efficient housing are designed to suit a broad range of household needs.

The development impact of the domestic workers skills development project on its participants

Wessels, Tersia Susara 31 December 2006 (has links)
The Domestic Workers Skills Development Project, funded by the National Skills Fund, was designed to improve the skill levels of domestic workers in South Africa. It also was intended to address their historical lack of education and to advance their socio-economic circumstances. This study investigates the implementation of this project within the framework of community development. Basadi Pele Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation, was a participant in this project. The central question was how to empower marginalised women through skills development. This implies a learning process for domestic workers and all involved. Different learning theories are investigated to develop an understanding of how these illiterate adult women learned during this opportunity. The conclusion reached by this study is that a gender sensitive environment, created by government institutions and the NGO involved, enabled domestic workers to change their lives and circumstances; enhancing this project and contributing to its success. / Development Studies / M.A. (Development Studies)

Negotiating gender, sexuality, class and ethnicity: women-loving Filipina domestic workers in Hong Kong. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2013 (has links)
Globalization has seen the acceleration of migration and movement across national borders. Prompted by a gap in the economic development between the two places, many Filipinas move from their homeland to Hong Kong to work as Foreign Domestic Workers (FDWs). Academic attention on their lives has flourished over the last two decades. However, the lesbian practice of FDWs remains under-investigated. Through participant observation of two Filipina FDW groups and in-depth interviews of ten Filipina lesbian domestic workers in Hong Kong, the current research investigates how their lesbian practices intricately relate to their social position in the Philippines and in Hong Kong, as well as the Filipino concept of gender and sexuality. As independent wage workers, these Filipinas enjoy elevated status at home while familial control decreases with distance. In the work destination, which offers better protection towards personal autonomy, the level of societal surveillance they face is further limited with their non-integration into the host society. Hence, their positions at both societies help shield them from tight social control, allowing them to practice homosexuality with relative ease. / This ethnographic study thus affirms the liberating effects of migration for opening up new sexual / gender possibilities: as well as engaging in same-sex relationships for the first time, some of these Filipina FDWs assume masculine identities only after coming to Hong Kong. Yet, the assumption of new gender identity runs contrary to the Filipino concept of gender, which privileges on a persistent inner self. Novice tomboys, therefore, often suffer much from social stigma as the change in gender identity is even more inexplicable to the Filipinas than a change in sexual orientation. / This current research meanwhile documents the performances of masculinity and femininity by these lesbian Filipina FDWs. While observing the significance of gender role-playing in Filipina lesbian relationships, this thesis highlights the presence of a more balanced mix of masculinities and femininities in both butches and femmes. Findings of the present study thus repudiate the dichotomous divides between masculinity and femininity; heterosexuality and homosexuality. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Lee, Yuk Yin. / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 146-152). / Electronic reproduction. Genre, sexe du chef de ménage et scolarisation des enfants à Ouagadougou / Gender, sex of household head and child education in Ouagadougou

Wayack Pambè, Madeleine 11 December 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the mediating role of gender in the demand for child education in Ouagadougou. It specifically addresses the influence of women in the modification of educational inequalities within households. The research utilizes census data from 2006, data from a quantitative study on the involvement of fathers and mothers in education, and semi-structures interviews with female heads of household conducted in 2009, to elaborate on results often observed in sub-Saharan Africa that children are often better educated in female-headed households. The analysis deals primarily with sociological priorities of the status of the “female head of household” and examines the element that legitimizes them as a distinct category from male heads of household, creating a cohesive group. The study focuses then on the relationship between demand for schooling and the sex of the head of household as well as, the sex of children in relation to family status. The results demonstrate that regardless the status of the head of household, particular family configurations with structures headed by women provide a conducive environment for the education of children, especially for boys. A complex and ambiguous finding also emerged in regards to the schools of these households, which proved to be more harmful to the education of some girls as a result of unequal gender relations in society exacerbated by the need for domestic labor in urban families. This thesis sheds light on the potential for census data to provide a gender-based approach to family education strategies in urban Burkina Faso.

The Influence of Contextual Aspects on New Zealand Muslim Males' Environmentally Ethical Behaviour

Yaacob, Mashitoh January 2009 (has links)
This study's aim was to investigate the strength of contextual aspects' influences on environmentally ethical behaviour (EEB). A survey method with a selfadministered questionnaire was used and a cross-section of the Muslim male population of New Zealand was taken. The qualitative interviews and email questionnaires were also utilised to further explain the survey results. The linear regression analyses show correlations between contextual aspects (i.e., social, religious, economic, political, and demographic) and EEB (pre-cycling, re-use and recycling). Results indicate that the contextual aspects are influential on EEB in many ways and degrees. A model describing the relationship was developed. The economic aspect statistically significantly related to EEB the strongest. The qualitative interview and email questionnaire data support the findings of the survey. The relationship was positive, meaning that the more the consumers were influenced by the economic aspect to behave in an environmentally ethical way, the more they were likely to perform EEB. Compared to the economic aspect, white collar workers, number of household occupant, work involvement with the environment, type of house, and age had a weaker statistically significant relationship with EEB. The relationships were positive, meaning that the better the consumers' occupation (i.e., white collar workers), the more household member they had (i.e., 4 and above), the higher their level of work involvement with the environment, and the better their dwelling (i.e., bungalow or semi-detached houses), the more they were likely to perform EEB. However, the relationship between age and EEB was negative, meaning that the younger the consumers the more they were likely to perform EEB. However, the results of this study, from both the survey and the interview methods, indicate that demographic characteristics were not as important as the contextual aspects, particularly the economic aspect, in understanding consumers' EEB. This study shows that the economic aspect was very important in understanding consumers' EEB compared to the other contextual aspects even the political aspect was statistically significantly related to EEB via the economic aspect. Thus, the economic aspect should be used optimally by public and private sector managers to promote EEB.

The repository and management system of household archives in Taiwan: case study of Taipei and New Taipei City

Liu, Pei Jyun Unknown Date (has links)
Household archives can provide basic demographic information for government decision-making and academic research, but also as legal evidence, which protect people's rights and duties. Because household archives special features, the repository and management system of household archives is different form national archives and administrative archives. Household registration use the "family" as a unit in Taiwan, and household archives record each citizen's living information. Different household registration offices have different methods for repository and management. This paper aims to investigate archival repository and management of household archives in Taiwan. The in-depth interview and questionnaire survey are pursued for understanding the situations and problems of archival repository and management at household registration offices in Taipei and New Taipei City. The opinions of household archives administrators and experts are summarized and refer to the literature review for proposing the conclusions and suggestions. There are five suggestions as follows. 1) To clarify different household archives definition in household registration offices; 2) To transfer the household archives to National Archives Administration; 3) To improve the household archival repository and environment; 4) To enhance the education of household staffs on archival management; 5) To assist household archives digitalization.
