Xenotopia: Death and Displacement in the Landscape of Nineteenth-Century American AuthorshipLewis, Darcy Hudelson 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is an examination of the interiority of American authorship from 1815–1866, an era of political, social, and economic instability in the United States. Without a well-defined historical narrative or an established literary lineage, writers drew upon death and the American landscape as tropes of unity and identification in an effort to define the nation and its literary future. Instead of representing nationalism or collectivism, however, the authors in this study drew on landscapes and death to mediate the crises of authorial displacement through what I term "xenotopia," strange places wherein a venerated American landscape has been disrupted or defamiliarized and inscribed with death or mourning. As opposed to the idealized settings of utopia or the environmental degradation of dystopia, which reflect the positive or negative social currents of a writer's milieu, xenotopia record the contingencies and potential problems that have not yet played out in a nation in the process of self-definition. Beyond this, however, xenotopia register as an assertion of agency and literary definition, a way to record each writer's individual and psychological experience of authorship while answering the call for a new definition of American literature in an indeterminate and undefined space.

Performative Resistance as Ecofeminist Praxis?Johnson, Benjamin D 05 1900 (has links)
Erika Cudworth's Developing Ecofeminist Theory provides a helpful foundation for a non-essentialist, properly intersectional ecofeminist account of oppression, marginalization, and domination, but her rejection of what she refers to as "postmodernism" appears to be based on a misreading of Judith Butler. I attempt to provide a synthesis of Cudworth's framework with Butler, particularly through the use of Karen Barad's agential realism, in order to provide possibility for new alliances between ecofeminism and other anti-oppressive frameworks. I then examine what it might look like to do ecofeminist praxis, given the complex view of agency, ontology, and intersectionality rendered by such a synthesis. I draw from bicycling as an example from which to extrapolate what it means to resist oppression, and then draw from the Philosophy for Children movement to consider what such resistance might look like within the classroom. This dissertation thus attempts to move from theory to practice, recognizing that "the real world" is both always at hand and also subject to performative deconstruction.

”Ambient Music”, established and described by its ”creator” Brian Eno, has become a term with a wide range of uses - as generative music, in sound- and audiovisual art installation, a mediated ”sound” of a genre through albums and artists to plug in to during your daily walk - as well as any imaginable association with the term connected to public, spatial or virtual ambience. Through the liner notes of the genres original albums (Ambient 1: Music For Airports of 1978, and to some extent Discreet Music of 1975) it is clear though that the original idea is more related to listening to your own spatial awareness as a form of music rather than a following of certain sounds and conventions that the term has been associated with. At the time as a sonic alternative to conventional background music of public spaces. The author suggests that these ideas never would have surfaced if it wasn’t for the earlier ideas of Erik Satie and John Cage, whose sonic frameworks and instructions beyond the traditional music sheet were vital for Eno to create generative canvases of sounding art for the spaces. The paper then focuses on consolidating the term ”Ambient Music” with its frameworks in art and function by deconstructing it between spatial, architectonic usage and as a mediated genre of a ”sound”, via virtual generative music - and back again, via its original description of enhancing environments ”acoustic and atmospheric idiosyncracies”. With Eno’s original thesis in mind the paper continues to explore where ”Ambient Music” (through arguably its sub-genre, ”Spatial Music”) is today, as well as looking at the potential futures for the genres’ artistic functions as an established and accepted sonic element of physical architecture and public spaces. This exemplified by building a bridge between ”Ambient Music” and the modern ”non-ambient” sonic scenographer, ”Spatial Music”-artist Mareike Dobewall, for further discussions on sound art as sounding architecture - a potential future for the Ambient label.

LIVING DISABILITY: WAYS FORWARD FROM DECONTEXTUAL MODELS OF DISABILITYKavanagh, Chandra January 2020 (has links)
Living Disability: Ways Forward from Decontextual Models of Disability consists
of six articles that provide both theoretical and pragmatic commentaries on decontextual
approaches to vulnerability and disability. In What Contemporary Models of Disability
Miss: The Case for a Phenomenological Hermeneutic Analysis I argue many commonly
accepted models for understanding disability use a vertical method in which disability is
defined as a category into which people are slotted based on whether or not they fit its
definitional criteria. This method inevitably homogenizes the experiences of disabled
people. A hermeneutic investigation of commonly accepted models for understanding
disability will provide an epistemological tool to critique and to augment contemporary
models of disability. In A Phenomenological Hermeneutic Resolution to the Principlist-
Narrative Bioethics Debate Narrative, I note narrative approaches to bioethics and
principlist approaches to bioethics have often been presented in fundamental opposition
to each other. I argue that a phenomenological hermeneutic approach to the debate finds a
compromise between both positions that maintains what is valuable in each of them.
Justifying an Adequate Response to the Vulnerable Other examines the possibility of
endorsing the position that I, as a moral agent, ought to do my best to respond adequately
to the other’s vulnerability. I contend that, insofar as I value my personal identity, it is
consistent to work toward responding adequately to the vulnerability of the other both
ontologically and ethically. Who Can Make a Yes?: Disability, Gender, Sexual Consent
and ‘Yes Means Yes’ examines the ‘yes means yes’ model of sexual consent, and the
political and ethical commitments that underpin this model, noting three fundamental

disadvantages. This position unfairly polices the sexual expression of participants,
particularly vulnerable participants such as disabled people, it demands an unreasonably
high standard for defining sexual interaction as consensual, and allows perpetrators of
sexual violence to define consent. In Craving Sameness, Accepting Difference: The
Possibility of Solidarity and Social Justice I note realist accounts typically define
solidarity on the basis of a static feature of human nature. We stand in solidarity with
some other person, or group of people, because we share important features in common.
In opposition to such realist accounts, Richard Rorty defines solidarity as a practical tool,
within which there is always an ‘us’, with whom we stand in solidarity, and a ‘them’,
with whom we are contrasted. I argue that by understanding Rorty’s pragmatic solidarity
in terms of the relational view of solidarity offered by Alexis Shotwell, it is possible to
conceptualise solidarity in a manner that allows for extending the boundaries of the
community with whom we stand in solidarity. In Translating Non-Human Actors I
examine Bruno Latour’s position that nonhuman things can be made to leave
interpretable statements, and have a place in democracy. With the right types of
mediators, the scientist can translate for non-humans, and those voices will allow for nonhuman
political representation. I wish to suggest that, like scientists, people with
disabilities are particularly capable of building networks that facilitate translation

The first three articles examine contemporary approaches to understanding vulnerability and disability, and explore what a contextual theoretical approach, one that puts the experiences of people with disabilities at the centre, might look like. The second three articles provide a bioethical examination of practical ethical questions associated with the treatment of people with disabilities when it comes to social and political positions on disability and sexuality, solidarity with people with disabilities, and the relationship between people with disabilities and objects.

Die Studie versucht, Husserls Modell einer nicht-wissenschaftlichen Lebenswelt für pädagogische Untersuchungen zum Verhältnis von Technik und Bildung in der verwissenschaftlichen Welt zu öffnen. Sie diskutiert Entwicklungsprobleme der Spätmoderne unter pluralen Fragestellungen und führt Ansätze und Traditionen zusammen, die unterschiedliche Wege zur Weiterentwicklung der modernen Bildungstheorie beschritten haben. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie moderne Technik einerseits als lebensweltliche Entfremdung des Menschen problematisiert und andererseits als Produkt menschlicher Freiheit und Weltgestaltung gewürdigt werden kann. In vier Kapiteln werden die methodischen Ansätze und Antworten vorgestellt, die der Philosoph und Pädagoge Eugen Fink (1905–1975), der Philosoph Martin Heidegger (1889–1976), der Philosoph und Erziehungswissenschaftler Theodor Litt (1880–1962) und der Soziologe Helmut Schelsky (1912–1984) auf die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Bildung und Technik gegeben haben. Im Durchgang durch ihre Positionen wird ein Konzert erarbeitet, dessen Originalität darin liegt, Abstimmungsprobleme von Bildung, Technik und Lebenswelt aus postdualistischer, praxistheoretischer sowie posthumanistischer Perspektive zu thematisieren. / The study attempts to open Husserl's model of a non-scientific lifeworld for pedagogical investigations of the relationship between technology and “Bildung” in the scientific world. It discusses developmental problems of late modernity under plural questions and brings together approaches and traditions that have taken different paths to the further development of modern “Bildungs”-theory. The central question is how modern technology can be problematized on the one hand as the alienation of human beings from the world of life and on the other hand be appreciated as a product of human freedom and the shaping of the world. Four chapters present the methodological approaches and answers that philosopher and educator Eugen Fink (1905–1975), philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889–1976), philosopher and educationalist Theodor Litt (1880–1962), and sociologist Helmut Schelsky (1912–1984) have given to the question of the relationship between education and technology. In the course of their positions, a concert will be developed whose originality lies in addressing the coordination problems of “Bildung” (education), “Technik” (technology) and “Lebenswelt” (lifeworld) from a post-dualist, praxis-theoretical as well as post-humanist perspective.
