Poetry as a Pedagogy of Touch

With evidence ranging from visual representations by scanning tunneling microscopes to the fluid and dynamic language of poetry, my research shows that we are shifting from a culture primarily based on ‘sight’ to one that is involved with ‘touch,’ metaphorically and literally speaking. Recent developments in theory and technology, especially quantum physics and post-structuralism, have redefined representation to encompass the necessary reflex of the representer. To be sure, my research has also found feminist and postcolonial criticisms to echo this theory: both have sought to challenge representations due to the objectivity normally attributed to the representer, the Cartesian logic of which quantum theory has destabilized. Thus, by reading poetry with a quantum theoretical lens, specifically the works of Gertrude Stein, Marianne Moore, Anne Carson, and Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, I show how ‘touch’ plays into our language, consequently affecting how we think through language. / Master of Arts

Mot händelsernas horisont : Att komponera improviserad musik med ljuddesign som metod

This Bachelor Thesis in composition explores an alternative compositional process for creating improvised music through the approach of sound design. The questions addressed in the thesis are concerned with how the soundscape can be controlled by the composer while still maintaining the expressivity of an improvised performance. Thus, the composer’s role as both sound designer, producer and performer is investigated using live electronics and score design. The theoretical framework for the thesis is to be found in the intersection between Anglo-American experimental music, electronic music, sound design and electroacoustic improvisation. Key influences include indeterminacy as expressed in the music of John Cage, Deep Listening practices pioneered by Pauline Oliveros as well as the aesthetical paradigms of electronic and electroacoustic music. The artistic methods revolved around the following steps: studio workshops with musicians (Fredrik Ekenvi and José Louis Relova Gallego) exploring timbres, playing techniques and music technology in real-time followed by associative discussions about the soundscapes created; composing audio and graphical drafts influenced by the workshops; designing diagrams for the electronics and compiling these to a design document; workshopping and performing the final piece (Towards the Event Horizon). Towards the Event Horizon (for bass clarinet, electric guitar and live electronics) is the final result of the work, comprising a score with accompanying design document as well as a recording of the original performance at Studio Acusticum in Piteå 20th of March 2021. The artefacts and associated documentation are presented in their entirety on the dedicated Research Catalogue exposition. Conclusions include how composition and sound design are tied together and cannot be considered as isolated processes, especially in the context of live electronics; the interrelationship between the improviser, the acoustic soundscape and the artistic associations that inform the improvisation; the importance of form as the defining element of a composition and lastly; how a score for improvised music can be devised in the shape of a blueprint of form and texture, setting certain technical, sonic and gestural conditions while leaving the performer to play freely within this frame. / <p>Konstnärliga artefakter presenteras via Research Catalogue: https://www.researchcatalogue.net/view/1250652/1250651</p>

Three essays in dynamic macroeconomics

This thesis presents three papers within the field of dynamic macroeconomics. The first paper, entitled “Medium-frequency cycles and the remarkable near trend-stationarity of output”, presents a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model with endogenous growth, capable of reconciling the observed large medium-frequency fluctuations in output, with its long run (near) trend-stationarity. This requires a model in which standard business cycle shocks lead to highly persistent movements around trend, without significantly altering the trend itself. The robustness of the trend also requires that scale effects are eliminated both in the long and short runs. In an estimated version of the model, a financial-type shock to the stock of ideas emerges as the key driver of the medium frequency cycle. The second paper, entitled “Learning from learners”, is an intervention into two long running debates: the first, on whether learnability may be used to rule out explosive paths for inflation in New Keynesian models, and the second, into whether Taylor rule parameters may be identified from observing the data. We find that in an economy populated with traditional macroeconomic learners, Taylor rule parameters can always be identified by sophisticated econometric techniques. Furthermore, when all agents in the economy use such sophisticated techniques, stationary sunspot solutions are readily learnable, and there is no guarantee of convergence to a stationary solution even in the “determinate” case. This implies that learnability cannot be used for equilibrium selection. Finally, in the third paper, “Efficient simulation of DSGE models with inequality constraints” (joint with Michael Paetz), we present a new algorithm for the simulation of models subject to inequality constraints, such as the zero lower bound on nominal interest rates. Our algorithm is shown to deliver higher accuracy than all other non-global algorithms, and leading speed. We go on to provide a number of applications of our algorithm.

A poetics of apprehension : indeterminacy in Gertrude Stein, Emily Dickinson and Caroline Bergvall

Ce mémoire examine les poétiques de trois poètes très différentes, mais dont les œuvres peuvent être qualifiées d'indéterminées et de radicales : Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) et Caroline Bergvall (née en 1962). Dickinson et Stein sont anglo-américaines, tandis que Bergvall est d’origine franco-norvégienne, bien qu'elle choisisse d’écrire en anglais. Toutes les trois rompent la structure syntaxique conventionnelle de l’anglais par leurs poétiques, ce qui comporte des implications esthétiques et politiques. Dans ce qui suit, j’analyse l’indétermination de leurs poétiques à partir de la notion, décrite par Lyn Hejinian, de la description comme appréhension qui présente l’écriture comme un mode de connaissance plutôt qu'un moyen d’enregistrer ce que le poète sait déjà. La temporalité de cette activité épistémologique est donc celle du présent de l’écriture, elle lui est concomitante. J'affirme que c'est cette temporalité qui, en ouvrant l’écriture aux événements imprévus, aux vicissitudes, aux hésitations, aux erreurs et torsions de l’affect, cause l'indétermination de la poésie. Dans le premier chapitre, j'envisage l'appréhension chez Gertrude Stein à travers son engagement, tout au long de sa carrière, envers « le présent continu » de l’écriture. Le deuxième chapitre porte sur le sens angoissé de l’appréhension dans la poésie de Dickinson, où le malaise, en empêchant ou en refoulant une pensée, suspend la connaissance. Le langage, sollicité par une expérience qu'il ne peut lui-même exprimer, donne forme à l'indétermination. Un dernier chapitre considère l’indétermination linguistique du texte et de l’exposition Say Parsley, dans lesquels Bergvall met en scène l’appréhension du langage : une appréhension qui survient plutôt chez le lecteur ou spectateur que chez la poète. / This thesis investigates the poetics of three very different female poets, whose works nevertheless are characterized as both indeterminate and radical: Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), Gertrude Stein (1874-1946), and Caroline Bergvall (b. 1962). The second chapter, on Dickinson, hinges on the anxious dimension of apprehension, in which unease, in thwarting or repressing a thought, suspends its understanding. Indeterminacy figures as language claimed by an experience it can’t itself claim. Finally, the last chapter considers the linguistic indeterminacies of Say Parsley, where Bergvall stages the apprehension of language itself in using indeterminacy as a poetic strategy to determinate ends, placing the possibilities, uncertainties and responsibilities of apprehension onto the reader or spectator.

La question directrice qui nous guide tout au long de ce travail est le "principium redendae rationis sufficientis" (le principe de la raison suffisante) sur la traduction duquel Heidegger mène ses réflexions au sujet de la traduction sans le mettre lui-même en relation avec la problématique de la traduction. En d’autres termes, la question que nous nous posons est de savoir si quelque chose comme la traduction est possible, quelle est la raison déterminante de cette possibilité et pourquoi en général une telle chose est possible plutôt qu’impossible. La question de la possibilité de la traduction au sens de ratio sufficiens, est une question qui porte sur l’essence de la traduction en tant que lieu où l’identité et la non-identité à la fois se thématisent et se problématisent. Nous nous référons afin de répondre à cette question directrice à la phénoménologie d’Edmund Husserl. Indépendamment du fait que Husserl lui-même, comme nous le montrons, pense à une telle possibilité de la traduction, l’intérêt de la phénoménologie de Husserl pour la théorie de la traduction consiste à proposer un instrument formidable d’analyse linguistique, dont la spécificité ne consiste pas dans l’analyse de la forme telle qu’elle est, mais dans l’analyse de la forme à partir du contenu de la conscience dans laquelle toute forme a soit son équivalent conscientiel conscient selon le mode intentionnel de la conscience, soit est explicable à partir d’un tel contenu. L’idée et la possibilité d’une recherche phénoménologique de la traduction se réalisent dans le présent travail à partir de l’exploration d’une telle conscience qui se présente en même temps comme une conscience traductionelle. / The central thought of the present work is the "principium redendae rationis sufficientis", the translation of which Heidegger himself dealt with in his reflections on translation, but without drawing these in relation to the issue of translation. In other words, we raise the following question: If something like translation is possible, what is then the decisive reason and why is translation more likely possible than impossible? The question with regard to the possibility of translation in the sense of ratio sufficiens enquires about the essence of translation as a specific location in which identity, but also non-identity, are simultaneously problematized and thematised. In order to elucidate our initial question, we refer to Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology. Irrespective of the fact that Husserl himself thought of a such possibility of translation, as we intend to show, the interest of Husserl’s phenomenology for a theory of translation consists in offering a formidable instrument of linguistic analysis whose specificity does not rely on a purely formal analysis, but on an analysis of form deriving from the content of consciousness, in which each form, according to the intentional mode of consciousness, is either disposing of its conscious equivalent or is explicable through a such content. The idea and the possibility of a phenomenological translation research is to carry out in this present work starting from the investigation of a such consciousness, that presents itself at the same time as a translation-consciousness. / Der dieser Arbeit zugrundeliegende Leitgedanke ist das "principium redendae rationis sufficientis", mit dessen Übersetzung sich Heidegger bereits in seinen Betrachtungen zu Übersetzung befasst hat, ohne jedoch diese selbst auf die eigentliche Übersetzungsproblematik zu beziehen. Mit anderen Worten fragen wir uns: Wenn etwas wie Übersetzung möglich ist, was ist der entscheidende Grund dafür und weshalb ist etwas derartiges vielmehr möglich als unmöglich? Die Frage nach der Möglichkeit der Übersetzung im Sinne der ratio sufficiens fragt nach dem Wesen der Übersetzung als Ort, an dem sich Identität und Nicht-Identität gleichzeitig thematisieren und problematisieren. Um unsere Ausgangsfrage zu erforschen, beziehen wir uns auf die Phänomenologie Edmund Husserls. Unabhängig davon, dass Husserl selbst, wie wir zeigen werden, bereits an eine solche Möglichkeit der Übersetzung gedacht hat, besteht das Interesse der Husserlschen Phänomenologie für die Übersetzungstheorie darin, ein ausgezeichnetes Instrument zur linguistischen Analyse vorzuschlagen, dessen Spezifizität nicht in einer reinen Formanalyse besteht, sondern in der Analyse der Form ausgehend vom Bewusstseinsinhalt, in dem jede Form entweder gemäß dem intentionalen Modus des Bewusstseins über ein bewusstseinsmäßiges Äquivalent verfügt oder von einem solchen Inhalt aus erklärbar ist. Die Idee und Möglichkeit einer phänomenologischen Übersetzungsforschung wird im Ausgang von der Erforschung eines solchen Bewusstseins, das sich auch als ein Übersetzungsbewusstsein darstellt, durchgeführt.

本文建立一個小型開放經濟的內生成長模型,並且以貨幣進入生產函數的方式,將貨幣引入經濟體系。據此,我們分別探討勞動外生及勞動內生的狀況下,央行以釘住通貨膨脹率作為貨幣政策,民眾的信念是否可以造成景氣的波動,並探討央行採行未預料到的貨幣政策及預料到的貨幣政策會如何影響經濟體系相關變數的成長率。   根據本文的分析,我們發現在勞動外生的狀況下,通貨膨脹率與Tobin q值呈現負向關係,由此我們可以推論,提高通貨膨脹率目標將對經濟成長率造成負面的影響。當央行採取通貨膨脹率指標作為貨幣政策時,經濟體系呈現均衡的確定性,表示民眾的信念不會造成景氣的波動。若央行調整通貨膨脹率目標時,名目貨幣供給成長率和通貨膨脹率呈現不同比例的變動,且變動方向不確定,需端視實質餘額成長率下降的效果與通貨膨脹率調整的效果何者較大才可決定。在政策宣示的部分,宣告期間的長短僅影響經濟成長率、實質資本成長率及實質貨幣餘額成長率的跳動幅度,不影響動態調整路徑的形狀。   在勞動內生化的狀況下,通貨膨脹率增減不影響Tobin q值的變動,故提高通貨膨脹率目標不會影響經濟成長率。當央行採取通貨膨脹率指標作為貨幣政策,勞動需求線斜率大於勞動供給線斜率時,經濟體系呈現均衡的不確定性,表示民眾的信念可以造成景氣的波動在央行調整通貨膨脹率目標時,名目貨幣供給成長率和通貨膨脹率呈現同方向、同比例變動。最後,政策宣示部分,政策宣告期間的長短會造成經濟成長率、實質資本成長率及實質貨幣餘額成長率呈現不同的動態調整路徑。

Human Rights and Contracts as Labour Governance: A (Post-)legal Realist Inquiry

Law and development mainstream conceptions of labour market policies, while still marked by long-dominant views of contract law as economically superior to any labour regulation, have recently incorporated certain specific labour (human) rights. Core labour rights are thus accepted by global policy-makers, on the basis of their radical distinction from non-core labour standards and their rationalization according to certain foundational principles. This thesis criticizes the prevailing dichotomies between core labour rights and non-core standards, on the one hand, and contract law and regulation, on the other, bringing to bear the post-legal realist idea of legal indeterminacy. It argues that the organizing legal concepts that justify these dichotomies contain gaps and ambiguities that often lead to contradictory and indeterminate outcomes. It thus suggests that the core/non-core labour standards and contract/regulation distinctions are unproductive and should be rejected if a better conception of labour governance is to come to fruition.

Cette thèse étudie l'impact déstabilisateur des politiques fiscales en présence d'une règle d'équilibre budgétaire dans les modèles de macroéconomie dynamique. Elle comporte trois essais dont l'objectif est d'éclairer de nouveaux mécanismes mettant en avant cet impact déstabilisateur. Dans le premier chapitre, nous étudions le lien entre préférences des ménages et instabilité agrégée. Le second et le troisième chapitre considèrent une approche multisectorielle et étendent la question de l'émergence de l'instabilité soit lorsque la politique fiscale est soit spécifique aux secteurs ou lorsque l'économie s'ouvre à l'échange international. / This dissertation study the destabilizing impact of fiscal policies in presence of a balanced-budget rule in the model of dynamic macroeconomics. It consist of three essays aiming to highlight new mechanisms providing this destabilizing impact. In the first chapter, we study the link between households' preferences et aggregate instability. The second and third chapter consider a multisectorial approach and extend the issue of the emergence of aggregate instability either when the tax policy is sector-specific or when the economy opens to international trade.
