Arquitetura ferroviária e industrial: os casos das cidades de São João del-Rei e Juiz de Fora (1875 - 1930) / Railroad and industrial architecture: the cases of São João del-Rei and Juiz de Fora (1875-1930)

Moreira, Danielle Couto 12 June 2007 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the architecture of the industrial age undertaken in the cities of São João del-Rei and Juiz de Fora, during the period from 1875 to 1930. The objects of this research were rail stations, factories and labor villages built in these two cities that stood out in their contexts. They are: the rail buildings of the oeste de Minas railroad (1881) and some workers\' houses, in the city of São João del-Rei; the rail stations of D. Pedro II railroad: Mariano Procópio Station (1875) and Central Station (1877-1906), and some workers\' houses in the city of Juiz de Fora; the rail station of Leopoldina Railroad (1927) at Juiz de Fora; the Companhia Industrial São Joannense (1891) with its labor village at São João del-Rei; the Companhia Têxtil Bernardo Mascarenhas (1888) and its labor village (1925) at Juiz de Fora; the Companhia Industrial e Construtora Pantaleone Arcuri & Spinelli (1895) and its labor village (1910) at Juiz de Fora; the Companhia de Fiação e Tecelagem Industrial Mineira (1885) at Juiz de Fora; the Companhia Fiação e Tecelagem Santa Cruz (1914) at Juiz de Fora; the Fábrica de Tecidos São João Evangelista (1924) and its company town at Juiz de Fora. The rail station architecture and industrial architecture were studied in terms of architectonic language, considering the implantation of the industrial buildings, rail stations and labor villages, the spatial organization and their configuration aspects. They were also studied in terms of urban insert, considering impacts that these buildings provoked in these cities at the time of their installation, as well as the analysis of their role in the current context. The presence of some tendencies was verified among the studied typologies, in terms of architectonic language and space organization, and also the predominance of the eclecticism language as architectural reference in these enterprises. The results clearly demonstrated the need of a more profound look on the questions that involve practices and politics of industrial heritage preservation in the cities of São João del-Rei and Juiz de Fora, emphasizing the incipient aspect of the researches about this subject in Minas Gerais.

Intervenções de restauro em Paranapiacaba: entre teorias e práticas / Restoration interventions in Paranapiacaba: between theory and practice

Cruz, Thais Fátima dos Santos 19 April 2013 (has links)
Situated south of the city of Santo André and surounded by Atlantic Forest of Sera do Mar in São Paulo, the railway Vila of Paranapiacaba is intrinsicaly linked to the construction of the first railway in the State of São Paulo by the English company Sao Paulo Railway (SPR) that implemented, since the decade of 1860, a modern urban infrastructure for the Brazilian reality of that period. This is an example of pioneering and unique city business planned, designed and managed by the British company, which stil has remaining significant funicular railway technology systems from nineteenth century (threatened with extinction). The Vilage tries to preserve its urban and architectural structures, which are distributed in three nuclei that make up the Vila of Paranapiacaba. The thesis analyzes the possible causes of mischaracterization and gradual loss of its railway colection and urban landscape. Also relies its look on the intervention practices of restoration in order to preserve the vilage remaining elements from nineteenth century, through a revitalization focused on tourism demand. Were selected for case studies three residential copies from diferentiated typology and hierarchy, to be evaluated from a theoretical framework of mainstream restoration, in addition to the Conservation and Restoration Charters, especialy the Venice Charter (1964). Within the context of the industrial heritage of Latin America, the thesis also presents a very similar and contemporary case to the railway Vila of Paranapiacaba, which is the town of Lota - mining city in Chile. The town preservation, as well as the conservation of its industrial collection of coal mines, leads Lota to the conservation and restoration debate. Through the touristic demand, the revitalization garantees its permanency as industrial heritage of Chile.

Les pressoirs à olives à vis en fer à activation manuelle du XIXe siècle comme objet de patrimonialisation, dans le contexte du patrimoine culturel palestinien / Nineteenth-century manually operated, iron screw-mechanism olive presses, as objects of patrimonalisation in the general context of Palestinian cultural heritage

Sharkawi, Maissoun 09 November 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores the social and historical environment in which the concept of Palestinian cultural heritage has been formulated throughout the past two centuries. The study, which is based on fieldwork, relies on an inventory of the manually operated, iron screw-mechanism olive presses (MISP) that still exist in situ in the rural area of the Ramallah governorate. This inventory constitutes an essential step in evaluating the heritage linked to the production of olive oil and in illustrating the rural proto-industry that existed by the second half of the 19th century in Palestine. Illustrating the bottom-up history of these findings and documenting the evolution of these techniques in view of offering a tool for the promotion and re-appropriation of this part of heritage as an inherent part of Palestinian culture, history and identity while incorporating it as an integral part of the greater Mediterranean olive oil culture

No. of bitstreams: 1 Cristine Machado Stuermer.pdf: 3844633 bytes, checksum: d418c4a2b8eb61c1deb42f2f030ae237 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-08-04 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / The city of São Paulo, known until the 1970 s for its industrial vocation, has been gradually loosing its participation in the Brazilian Industrial production since the 1980 s. The migration of big industries from urban centers to remote areas led the older productive buildings to be slowly abandoned. Along this process, magnified by the city's real estate business voracity, factories were closed, causing the degradation of its structures and machinery, frequently resulting in the demolition of establishments, some of which considered interesting for its historical register and/or its architectonic qualities. This dissertation aims at contributing with some reflections on the contemporary values related to the industrial building heritage. Such values allow a better understanding of the transformation and reuse processes for which the buildings that compose this heritage have been going through. It is being taken into account that the preservation of its patrimony and remnants is related to the existence of activities, such as the economical and social ones, in which modernity take part of. Being the existence and maintenance of architecture dependent on resources, it is of interest to reflect upon their nature, not only economic but also symbolic, and in this sense, intrinsically related to the culture and tradition of where the architecture exist. Therefore, the arguments presented here are aimed at reflecting on the role and importance of economic and cultural/symbolic values in preserving and reconverting industrial building heritage / A cidade de São Paulo, identificada até a década de 1970 por sua vocação fabril, vem diminuindo gradativamente sua participação na produção industrial do país desde os anos 1980.

An Integrated Framework For Sustaining Industrial Beings In The Urban Context

Canaran, Cansu 01 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The need and challenge of sustaining industrial beings is a recent phenomenon. Hence the approaches in this regard are not yet profoundly defined to manage the protection and restoration of those beings. In this respect, this thesis searches for an integrated approach for sustaining industrial structures, sites, and landscapes which are typically significant for their heritage value in the urban context. To develop a thematically consolidated integrated framework, the study investigated &lsquo / conceptual&rsquo / , &lsquo / typological&rsquo / , &lsquo / analytical&rsquo / , and &lsquo / operational&rsquo / basis of the subject matter. This is maintained by scrutinizing the practicalities of the (western) countries that have already formulated advanced policies. The conceptual basis of the issue is revealed by examining the changing urban dynamics / the debate over &lsquo / continuity&rsquo / versus &lsquo / change&rsquo / main value typologies of the heritage resources and the process of obsolescence in the life-span of industrial beings. Taxonomy for the structures and spaces that constitute the object matter of the thesis formed the basis of an integral typology. This is supported by the specification of the characteristics of industrial beings and the opportunities they offer in the urban context. Correspondingly, strategic approaches and modes of intervention relevant for the different types of industrial beings are examined. The study exposed the analytical framework by assessing industrial beings according to diversity of functions, basic change of use, spatial scale of the projects, types of intervention and the design approaches. The scope of the issue in Turkey is revealed by identifying the present policy framework in accordance with the legislative and instrumental measures. This is complemented by an inventory for the significant industrial heritage sites. The findings demonstrated the particularity of the problematic in Turkey / the distinctive factors behind the emergence of obsolescence / the extremely divergent attitudes to and interests in obsolete industrial beings, as well as the complexity of the industrial sites. As a final task, the application(s) for the industrial sites along The Golden Horn were investigated. The Golden Horn case has also confirmed that such an integrated approach is required to protect and enhance industrial beings. In this manner the basic components of an integrated program considering the sites in the urban context and as problem areas of urban design are specified.

Discours, mémoires et territoires : les anciennes usines TASE et RHODIACETA entre patrimoine et oubli / Speech, memory and territory : the old Tase and Rhodiaceta factories between heritage and oblivion

Valex, Mathias 24 September 2018 (has links)
This work tackles the study of the material and discursive destiny of two old man-made textile factories in the Lyon area after their closing: the Tase factory based in Vaulx-en-Velin and the Rhodiaceta factory based in the 9th district of Lyon, which both belonged to the Rhône-Poulenc corporation until their closing in 1980.The starting point of this research was based on the fact that both factories were similar in many ways before their closing, yet haven’t followed the same path since then, neither according to space nor to speeches. We will therefore study the role of three discursive spheres in these differentiated paths from 1980 to 2013 –the civil sphere, the institutional sphere and the mediaarena- based on the analysis of their existence in the local media. We will analyze the local paper – Le Progrès - and the community press which told the stories of these old factories as well as the memories and heritage that are tied to their representation. This work is based on the analysis of a multi-scale evolving context which includes territory – economics and politics-, institutions –with the progressive extension of the notion of heritage-,and nation –the evolution of governments and of legislation. Finally, the media analysis is supplemented by semi-directive contemporary interviews of local players who work in these spheres. At the end of the day, this work questions the conditions in which a discursive representation of these old factories is supposed to have acknowledged them with a territorial identity. The local media have dealt with this issue from a certain past perspective, a creative reconstruction that fashioned this acknowledgement.
