Measuring the Global Research Environment: Information Science Challenges for the 21st CenturyAnderson, Caryn, Bammer, Gabriele January 2005 (has links)
“What does the global research environment look like?” This paper presents a summary look at the results of efforts to address this question using available indicators on global research production. It was surprising how little information is available, how difficult some of it is to access and how flawed the data are. The three most useful data sources were UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Research and Development data (1996-2002), the Institute of Scientific Information publications listings for January 1998 through March 2003, and the World of Learning 2002 reference volume. The data showed that it is difficult to easily get a good overview of the global research situation from existing sources. Furthermore, inequalities between countries in research capacity are marked and challenging. Information science offers strategies for responding to both of these challenges. In both cases improvements are likely if access to information can be facilitated and the process of integrating information from different sources can be simplified, allowing transformation into effective action. The global research environment thus serves as a case study for the focus of this paper – the exploration of information science responses to challenges in the management, exchange and implementation of knowledge globally.

Grand challenges such as public health, security, genomics, environmental protection, education, and economics, are characterized by complexity, interdependence, globalization, and unpredictability. Although the unprecedented quantity of information surrounding these challenges can provide users with a new perspective on solutions, the data surrounding complex systems vary
with respect to levels of structure and authority, and include vastly different contexts and vocabularies. To be successful in this domain we must extend our models of information science such that they operate successfully in environments where the quantity of relevant information far
exceeds our human processing capacity. For example, the well-accepted precision and recall metrics break down when hundreds of thousands of documents are relevant. Solutions to grand challenges require that information scientists shift their focus from information retrieval towards information synthesis.

Bakalauro darbo objektas – beprotybė Syvlijos Plath ir Virginijos Woolf romanuose. Darbo tikslas – išnagrinėti romanus psichoanalitiniu aspektu ir charakterizuoti personažų beprotybę. Tikslui pasiekti buvo iškelti šie uždaviniai: 1) ištirti beprotybės sąvoką literatūroje; 2) išnagrinėti beprotybės sąvoką psichoanalitinėje teorijoje; 3) išnagrinėti romanus psichoanalitiniu aspektu ir charakterizuoti juose vaizduojamą beprotybę. Bakalauro darbo metodologiją sudaro: 1) beprotybės literatūroje bei psichoanalizėje teorinės medžiagos tyrimas; 2) psichoanalitinė kritika kaip pagrindinis analizės metodas ir psichoanalitinis beprotybės romanuose konceptualizavimas; 3) tarpdiscipliniškumas kaip psichoanalitinio diskurso bei teorijos naudojimo literatūroje pagrindas, kuriuo remiantis pritaikomas Julijos Thompson Klein „kryžminio-apvaisinimo“ metodas. Šiame darbe beprotybė yra nagrinėjama literatūriniu (teorijos) ir psichoanalitiniu aspektu pasitelkiant Jaqueso Lakano teorijas bei sąvokas. Psichoanalitinei analizei buvo pasirinkti Silvijos Plath „Stiklo gaubtas“ (1963) ir Virginijos Woolf „Ponia Dalolvei“ (1925) romanai. / Madness in novels by Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf is the object of the Bachelor Thesis.
Sources of the research are S. Plath’s novel The Bell Jar and V. Woolf’s novel Mrs Dalloway. The aim
of the present research is to carry out psychoanalytical research of the novels in order to characterize
madness. In order to achieve the aim the following objectives have been set: 1) to investigate the
concept of madness in fiction; 2) to explore the psychoanalytic approach theory of psychoanalysis and
madness; 3) to perform a psychoanalytic research of the novels in relation to madness.
The methodology applied in the present Thesis included: 1) theoretical analysis in order to
research views on madness both form literary and psychoanalytical aspects; 2) psychoanalytical
criticism as the main method of analysis and psychoanalytic conceptualization of madness; 3)
interdiciplinarity that enabled incorporation of psychoanalytic theories into the analysis employing the
Cross-Fertilization method presented by Julie Thompson Klein.
In the Bachelor Thesis madness is investigated both from the literary (theory) standpoint and
from the aspect of psychoanalysis by incorporating concepts and theories coined by Jaques Lacan. For
practical analysis, S. Plath’s “The Bell Jar” (1963) and V. Woolf’s “Mrs Dalloway” (1925) were

The object of this research is human in Henry David Thoreau’s, William Faulkner’s, John Barth’s novels (in philosophical, modernistic, postmodernistic novels).
The aim of the research is to analyse the novels of the mentioned authors by identifying and comparing different aspects of human and its reflections in the works of art. The objectives are the following: 1) to present a theoretical background of the comparative method and Hannah Arendt’s human conception; 2) to provide and interpret various aspects of human presented by the mentioned authors; 3) to compare the revealed aspects of human shapes identified in those three novels.
The methodology of the research includes Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek’s theory of Comparative Literature as a method and Hannah Arendt’s human conception, presented in her book The Human Condition (1958). Her ideas enriched this Bachelor thesis from an interdisciplinary point of view. Besides, her division of men’s activities into labor, work and action was crucial in this research.
All three novels exposed different human shapes. The aspect of labor in Thoreau’s novel revealed human as a survivor, whose needs were based on necessities. Faulkner’s novel reminded us that humans are only mortals under constraints of society, requiring not only necessities, but superfluities as well. Barth’s novel showed an instinctive side which exists in every human, but which is not always demonstrated.

Darbo tikslas – išanalizuoti minėtų autorių romanus, nustatant ir palyginant įvarius žmogaus aspektus bei jo vaizdavimą šiuose meno kūriniuose. Uždaviniai: 1) pateikti teorinius lyginamojo metodo ir Hannos Arendt žmogaus koncepcijos pagrindus; 2) nagrinėti ir interpretuoti įvairius žmogaus aspektus; 3) palyginti atskleistus žmogaus formų aspektus, nustatytus trijuose romanuose.
Šio tyrimo metodologiją sudaro Steveno Tötösy de Zepetneko komparatyvistikos kaip metodo teorija ir Hannos Arendt žmogaus koncepcija, pristatyta Žmogaus būklėje (1958). Arendt idėja skirstyti žmonių veiklą į darbą, darymą ir veiksmą leido konceptualiai ir tarpdiscipliniškai nagrinėti žmogų.
Visi trys romanai parodė skirtingas žmogaus formas ir vis kitokį žmogaus traktavimą. Darbas Thoreau romane atskleidė žmogų kaip besistengiantį išgyventi individą, kurio poreikiai apsiriboja būtiniausiais dalykais. Faulknerio romanas priminė, kad žmonės tėra mirtingieji, veikiami visuomenės ir siekiantys ne tik būtiniausių, bet ir gausybės nebūtinų daiktų. Bartho romanas parodė instinktyviąją žmogaus pusę, kuri glūdi kiekviename iš mūsų, tačiau ne visada yra demonstruojama.

This thesis explores the notion of betrayal through a sustained examination of two politically abject types – ‘the corpse/body’ and ‘the dilettante’. By expounding on what is here termed an ‘antipathology’, it performs a phenomenology of these types, not so much enclosing them as totalities, or consistent concepts/essences, as taking them in their discursive import, “at their word”. The argument unfolds via readings of Friedrich Nietzsche and Emmanuel Lévinas – both serving as each other’s readers and interpreters – taken to share the project of critiquing morality in the name of what I term, after Lévinas, ‘ethics’. This antipathology of treason aims at evoking the mechanisms of political ‘abjection’ – a concept borrowed from Julia Kristeva – employed in the traitor’s expulsion from the political. It will thus probe into the ethical implications of this expulsion, insofar as it is taken here to be inscribed deep within prevalent ethico-political discourses, part-and-parcel of their sustaining inertia.

This research investigates the music-theatre phenomenon for the purpose of: clarifying how that differs from more traditional forms of musical theatre, i.e., Opera and Broadway musical; discussing its aesthetic bases; explicating its modes of operation in relation to both music and theatre. The writing is structured in three main parts. The first concern of the discussion is to clarify the connection between music and performance. To that end, Part One starts by reflecting on the nature of music and how its perception has been changed by modern technology, throwing live performance into question. The notions of physicality, embodiment, and gesture are then invoked in order to re-position music firmly within the performing arts. Part Two then delves into music-theatre touching on issues of terminology, artistic scope, positioning, production, funding, structures, institutions. Part Three, finally, offers some conclusions and recommendations. The Thesis is then followed by a commentary to the portfolio of compositions accompanying this research. The musical scores and audio-visual material relative to the works therein discussed are included on 1 separately bound volume.

Previous issue date: 2015-07-20 / Este trabalho objetiva reafirmar a necessidade de a escola voltar-se para o letramento dos indivíduos como uma forma de inseri-los na sociedade de maneira atuante e competente. Desde a construção do Projeto Político Pedagógico até a gestão da sala de aula precisam garantir práticas educativas que visem o desenvolvimento do letramento.A proposta é que o texto literário seja efetivamente utilizado em sala de aula por todas as áreas do conhecimento, pois todas são responsáveis pelo desenvolvimento da competência leitora dos alunos, visto que, o mundo contemporâneo exige um sujeito crítico, capaz de intervir na realidade. Isso é possível através do contato com mundos diferentes que a literatura é capaz de proporcionar e, portanto, constitui-se num campo fértil para estabelecer diálogos consigo mesma ou com outros textos e até com outras épocas, o que permite ao aluno inferir, comparar, concordar, discordar e questionar, habilidades fundamentais na construção do leitor competente. Este trabalho propõe uma aproximação entre Literatura da História, através da leitura do romance “Viagens de Gulliver”, enquanto gênero literário, bastante rico pela complexidade de personagens e fatos que fazem parte do enredo, e que nada mais são do que uma visão fictícia das sociedades e dos valores morais, intelectuais e culturais que se descortinam na narrativa. A turma escolhida foi o 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental por apresentar maturidade para dialogar com um romance que enfatiza a formação das sociedades, a condição humana diante do poder e as guerras, assuntos pertencentes ao currículo de História na série citada. Este trabalho apresenta uma proposta interdisciplinar entre História e Literatura pois acredita-se que o aluno precisa compreender que a realidade social é uma construção histórica da humanidade, e que o romance “Viagens de Gulliver” possibilita ao aluno entrar em contato com diferentes pontos de vista, que revela “os lugares da memória”. A disciplina de História foi escolhida por estabelecer ligação com a Literatura porque ambas proporcionam uma ampla visão das sociedades através do processo de complementaridade entre ficção e realidade. No ensino fundamental, a leitura literária é imprescindível, independente da área de conhecimento, porque ela é responsável pela construção da autonomia individual e coletiva. Tal autonomia é adquirida a partir da interação entre os indivíduos permeada pela leitura. Por este motivo a proposta de intervenção objetiva aproximar o romance “Viagens de Gulliver” e o livro didático do 9º ano como forma de proporcionar ao aluno diversas possibilidades de perceber a realidade. / This work aims to reaffirm the need for the school to turn to the literacy of individuals as a way to insert them into the society in an active and competent way, to this end is fundamental the innovation of the whole educational practices, since the construction of the Pedagogic Political Project to the classroom management. The proposal is that the literary text is effectively used in the classroom by all areas of knowledge, because all are responsible for the development of reading competence of the students, since the contemporary world requires a critical subject, able to intervene in reality. This is possible, since each teacher has a thorough knowledge of the features of reading act. In order to the dialog among them happens safely and fertility. Literature allows contact with different worlds and, therefore constitutes a fertile field for contacting the dialogues it’s capable of providing, either with itself or with other texts and even other epochs, what allows students to infer, compare, agree, disagree and question, fundamental skills in building competent reader. To approximate the History of Literature, it proposes the reading of the novel as a literary genre, very rich by the complexity of the characters and events that are part of the plot, and which are nothing more than a fictitious vision of societies and of the moral, intellectual and cultural values that are revealed in the narrative. The goal is to appropriate of the literary text as historical source, in order to the students start to understand that social reality is a historic building of humanity, and to this end, this historical reading needs to be interdisciplinary, this is the reason of the choice for the novel, which allows contact with different points of view, which reveals the "places of memory". In elementary school, literary reading is essential, regardless of the area of knowledge, because it is responsible for the construction of individual and collective autonomy.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Through the enlargement of the concept of health, which started to envolve biopsychosocial
factors, the occurrence of multidisciplinary teams becomes frequent in hospital institutions,
aiming an integral care for patients and family members. Assuming that the psychologist is a
professional who has been inserted further more into the hospital reality, a research was
developed to comprehend how other health professionals (such as doctors and nurses) notice
the psychologist when it comes to his functions, importance or difficulties faced by him. This
is a qualitative, exploratory and transversal field study which made use of an interview guided
by axes to collect informations of 21 professionals of a teaching hospital of the interior of Rio
Grande do Sul. Nine doctors, nine nurses and three psychologists from different sectors were
part of it. The interviews were analyzed by the principles of the content analysis and the
originated categories are described and debated in three articles. It became evident that the
health professionals consider relevant the accomplishment of a biopsychosocial approach in
health care, besides gazing as work ideal the multidisciplinary team. However, at the hospital
in question the reality is that the teams are restricted when it comes to their professional areas.
It was noted that the doctors and nurses expectation is that the psychologist act within the
aspects that the other professionals do not feel able to act on, such as anguish, crying, fear of
death and treatment denial. In addition, it is attributed to the psychologist the capacity of
seeing beyond the diseased body and to accomplish some functions at the hospital. For the
respondents, the psychologist would let some instruments as attentive hearing, the almost
magic speaking and his time available. It was also mentioned that the graduation course in
psychology is far-off the other health courses and, consequently, the hospital itself, which can
result in the inadequacy of the psychologist before the hospital reality. In this manner, it is
therefore concluded that the hospital is an institution composed by many factors and, for it to
integrate itself satisfactorily , the psychologist must initiate his journey in the graduation
process, getting closer to the team colleagues and building a space of acknowledgement and
psychology valorization. / Com a ampliação do conceito de saúde, que passa a envolver fatores biopsicossociais, tornase
frequente em instituições hospitalares a ocorrência de equipes multidisciplinares, visando
um atendimento integral aos pacientes e familiares. Partindo do pressuposto que o psicólogo é
um profissional que tem se inserido cada vez mais no hospital, realizou-se uma pesquisa para
compreender como os médicos e enfermeiros percebem o psicólogo quanto as suas funções,
importância e dificuldades. Trata-se de um estudo de campo, qualitativo, exploratório e
transversal que fez uso de uma entrevista semi-dirigida, norteada por eixos, para coletar as
informações de 21 profissionais de um hospital-escola do interior do Rio Grande do Sul.
Participaram nove médicos, nove enfermeiros e três psicólogos de diferentes setores. As
entrevistas foram analisadas pelos preceitos da análise de conteúdo e as categorias originadas
são descritas e discutidas em três artigos. Evidenciou-se que os profissionais da saúde
consideram relevante a realização de uma abordagem biopsicossocial em saúde, além de
vislumbrarem como ideal de trabalho a equipe multidisciplinar. No entanto, no hospital
estudado a realidade é a de equipes restritas quanto as áreas profissionais. Notou-se que a
expectativa dos médicos e enfermeiros é a de que o psicólogo atue com os aspectos que os
demais profissionais não se sentem aptos, como a angústia, choro, medo da morte e negativas
ao tratamento. Ainda, ao psicólogo é atribuída a capacidade de ver para além do corpo
enfermo. Para cumprir algumas funções no hospital, na visão dos entrevistados, o psicólogo
disponibilizaria de alguns instrumentos, como a escuta atenta, a fala quase mágica e o
tempo disponível para conversar. Também, foi mencionado que o curso de graduação em
psicologia é afastado dos demais cursos da saúde e, conseqüentemente, do hospital, o que
pode acarretar na inadequação do psicólogo à realidade hospitalar. Conclui-se que o hospital é
uma instituição complexa e para se integrar satisfatoriamente, o psicólogo deve iniciar seu
percurso ainda na graduação, se aproximando dos colegas de equipe e construindo um espaço
de reconhecimento e valorização para a psicologia hospitalar.

The main objective was to synthesize the theoretical and methodological proposals which may arise as a reference for decisions on the areas of agroecological management of natural resources. Thus presenting the multi-criteria on which the decision-making can occur. To this end, research is based on two basic aspects. The first describes the disciplinary order of the indicators, analyzing whether there is the use of interdisciplinary perspective on the construction and usage. The second, examines these tools on the aspects of internal and external. The internal order refers to the relationship between concepts and theories behind the indicators and operating procedures of knowledge production. And the external refers to political-institutional determinants that express the configuration of universities and research institutes in addition to the purpose or purposes under which the indicators are constructed. / Por meio da análise documental, analisaram-se documentos institucionais e acadêmicos que se propuseram a desenvolver indicadores de sustentabilidade para os agroecossistemas. O principal objetivo foi sintetizar as propostas teóricas e metodológicas que possam surgir como uma referência para as decisões sobre as áreas de manejo agroecológico dos recursos naturais. Apresentando assim, os critérios múltiplos sobre os quais a tomada de decisão pode ocorrer. Para tanto, a investigação está baseada em dois aspectos base. O primeiro descreve a ordem disciplinar dos indicadores, analisando se há o emprego da perspectiva interdisciplinar na construção e uso dos mesmos. O segundo analisa essas ferramentas quanto aos aspectos de ordem interna e externa. A ordem interna refere-se à relação entre conceitos e teorias que fundamentam os indicadores e os procedimentos operacionais desse conhecimento produzido. E a externa refere-se aos determinantes político-institucionais que expressam a configuração das universidades e institutos de pesquisa, além da finalidade ou os propósitos sob os quais os indicadores são construídos.

La notion de représentation culturelle n’a pas fait l’objet, jusqu’à présent, d’une analyse approfondie qui aurait pu permettre d’en dégager la spécificité. L’intérêt de cette étude portant sur les représentations culturelles de la folie au Sénégal a permis de délimiter un champ de recherche à l’interface de l’individuel et du collectif par une analyse pluridisciplinaire de type complémentaire et une synthèse interdisciplinaire sous l’angle sociologique.Le recueil et la synthèse des données culturelles traditionnelles de la folie au Sénégal et l’analyse des entretiens au sein de l’Hôpital Fann à Dakar ont permis d’entrevoir l’intégration de référentiels issus de multiples univers de sens sacré/profane, magico-religieux/bio-médical au sein des représentations. Cette complexité des données manifestes et latentes, concernant des représentations différentes, au sein d’un même discours remet en question les grilles de lecture simplifiant l’univers polymorphe et changeant des représentations et rappelle l’importance de l’appréhension et de la compréhension des mécanismes d’évolution culturelle et leur impact sur les acteurs sociaux. / The concept of cultural representation was not the object, until now, of a thorough analysis which could have made it possible to release specificity from it. Interest of this study relating to the cultural representations of the madness in Senegal was to delimit a field of research to the interface of individual and collective by a multi-field analysis of complementary type and an interdisciplinary synthesis from a sociological angle.The collection and the synthesis of the traditional cultural data of the madness in Senegal and the analysis of talks from the Hospital Fann in Dakar made it possible to foresee integration of reference frames resulting from multiple universes from crowned/layman and magic-religious/biomedical direction in the representations. This complexity of the manifest and latent data, concerning different representations, within the same speech calls in question the grids of reading simplifying the polymorphic universe and changing representations and recalls the importance of the apprehension and the comprehension of the mechanisms of cultural evolution and their impact on the social actors.
