L'ennui dans quelques romans de Julien Green : du « violent dégoût de tout » à « l’effroi d’être au monde » / Boredom in Julien Green's work : from" violent disgust of everything" to "anguish of being alive"

Andevert, Anne-Laure 08 June 2015 (has links)
In a first part, our analysis of the Greenian boredom from within and without has highlighted his characters’ internal alienation mirroring their inability to live. Indeed, studying the characters’ environment gives some insight into the scope of boredom. The town then becomes the canvass on which their boredom and suffering are displayed whereas the freedom they believe is theirs, is only an illusion. The house – a symbol of this confinement – is the metaphor of some escape beyond the self. The house is a prison cell where passions build up and run high. Greenian beings are involved with some immutability failing to confront them with their inability to ride out this boredom. A sobering conclusion as they cannot enjoy themselves : men are condemned to get bored. In the second part, the consequences of boredom on the characters have been highlighted. While this boring life prematurely makes the characters older, they desperately attempt to ground into an elusive reality through ridiculous habits and pointless activities, except filling the empty nothingness drowning them. Their hating others appears and influences their family : they cannot love or be loved ; from now on they will have to feel they are alive by oppressing and destroying others. The third part points out the proven consequences of boredom. This outburst of violence stems logically from some uneasiness originating in hatred. If the characters retreat for a while into the world of musing to escape from a stifling reality, this musing gradually keeps the real at bay and deprives them of all connections to reality. While creating their world, they relieve their suffering, their social maladjustment and the violence simmering in them. Mania and violence directly lead to murder as the solution to get rid of others, a source of boredom. But murder is never deliberately wanted and death appears as the unique solution : the character kills himself because – as Baudelaire wrote in his Correspondance générale he cannot bear the weariness of sleeping and the weariness of waking up.

Ensamhet och exekutiva funktioner hos äldre.

Sandström-Norén, Katarina, Isberg, Ronja January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this paper was to investigate whether there are any associations between perceived loneliness and executive functions in older people. Participants consisted of 98 senior citizens between the ages of 65 and 75. Perceived loneliness was measured with the Three-Item Loneliness Scale (TILS). Executive functions were measured with nine different tests aimed at measuring the three processes of inhibition, shifting and updating. Inhibition was measured with Flanker, Simon and Stroop task. Shifting was measured with Local Global, Color Shape and Number Letter task. Updating was measured with Letter Memory, Matrix Monitoring and Numerical 2-back task. Proportion of correct answers as well as response time were used as dependent variables. Data was analysed by correlation analyses where significant correlations were further analysed in hierarchical regressions. Results showed a significant association between perceived loneliness and response time in the Number Letter task; higher reported loneliness was associated with longer response time. Loneliness explained 4% of the variance in response time. This paper thus supports that there appears to be an association between perceived loneliness and reduced performance in certain executive functions, in this case shifting as measured through response time in the Number Letter task. Future studies should investigate this further. This becomes particularly relevant considering that the world's population is getting older, along with the fact that many elderly experience loneliness. If perceived loneliness is associated with deteriorating executive functions, interventions aimed at reducing loneliness may be of great benefit both to individuals and society as a whole.

Míra chudoby a osamělosti generace 65 plus / Poverty and solitude ratio among generation 65+

NEJEDLÁ, Kateřina January 2015 (has links)
The thesis deals with the life of people over sixty-five years, with special focus on financial security and loneliness. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the problems of aging and aging-related changes. Following chapters are devoted to the issues of poverty, gender inequalities in old age and social exclusion. Furthermore, according to the available scientific literature, i describe the themes of loneliness, the impact of loneliness on health and the importance of interpersonal relationships on the issue of loneliness. The thesis aims to better understand the impact of life events and life circumstances on poverty and loneliness in the lives of respondents, and how were these aspects perceived and experienced in the past. Also how do they perceive their current situation, especially in the area of the financial safety and loneliness. There was random selection of five respondents for the research with special objectives in mind equal participation both men and women and living alone after divorce or widowhood and marriage / partnership. These respondents retold their life stories with the help of extensive narrative interviews, which I later transcribed in detail and carefully read through, not to omit important milestones in their lives, which helped me to accomplish the aim of the thesis. For the practical part of the thesis I have chosen the strategy of qualitative research using narrative interviews. Narrative mode is based on a unique and compelling life story presentation with an emphasis on life experience. This technique is suitable for the older generation, which was also confirmed during the research. Two main questions were established for the research. 1.Did the experienced life events and life circumstances influence poverty and loneliness in their current lives? 2. How they perceived and experienced the poverty and loneliness during their lifetime? To answer these questions, it was necessary to keep the conversation arend relevant topics. The research resulted in the following conclusions. Surprisingly, respondents feel no poverty, although the level of their pension is often very near poverty area. Poverty is percieved as the situation of nothing to eat, nowhere to live and no means of subsistence. The explanation lies in the fact that all respondents lived in a time and place where you had to make do with less, and it is the source of their modesty and unpretentiousness. All respondents agree that the transition to retirement was an important milestone in their lives. Altough current pensions doesn't provide for that much activities they were accustomed to, they don't perceive their situation as feeling poor. You can say, that a modest life prepare respondents for life in retirement. In a similar way, respondents expressed the theme of loneliness. In all the interviews family was dominating factor. Respondents living in villages and small sized towns declare to maintain good neighbor relationships, often lasting from the time of childhood. Loneliness is most often associated with the loss of a partner. In the stories of two female respondents, there was loneliness occurance after the death of a partner. This period is stated as the worst in their life and they felt most alone then. Currently the loneliness is compensated by their children and grandchildren.

Životní styl partnerských párů po 60. roce věku / The lifestyle of couples aged more then 60. years.

MARIÁNKOVÁ, Alena January 2012 (has links)
At present we are witnessing a revolutionary period marked by changes in population demographics. Recently there has been a significant increase in life expectancy of people in developed countries and the percentage of seniors in society has been rising. The issue of a proactive approach to aging is therefore very relevant today. It is difficult to determine when youth ends and old age starts, but the World Health Organization has determined this age limit as 60 years. This is the time when people retire and when they perceive their own aging most intensely. The aim of the thesis is to explore the lifestyle of seniors. The theoretical part includes a description of this particular period of human life, the practical research studies the lives of concrete seniors with the aim of creating a clear conception of how today's seniors live, what their normal days look like, what they are occupied with and what they are worried about. The main research groups are couples, but in the research are included also individuals, mostly widows who live alone. Interviews conducted in their home environment enable looking into their privacy, and finding out what the lifestyle of people over 60 years old is like. For all respondents, retirement was a major turning point in their lives. The way they coped with this situation is different in each case, but anyway their lives and lifestyles changed in some way, either positively or negatively. Some people slowed down the pace of life and began to pursue hobbies and family life after leaving their jobs, others used the newly gained time to start to fully focus on their hobbies. There are, however, people who gave up their hobbies and got indolent. This applies particularly to lonely people. The research has shown that people living in pair are more active and if they are not limited by health problems, they show greater diligence and activity. Partners support each other in their hobbies and encourage each other to action. The research could not cover the views of all seniors, but it has turned out that a positive approach to life and an active lifestyle significantly helps improve old age that should not be seen as a sad and final chapter of life.

Uma casa, tempo de espera e silêncio: uma leitura de Ontem não te vi em Babilónia e O arquipélago da insónia, de António Lobo Antunes / A house, waiting time and silence: readings on "Ontem não te vi em Babilônia" e "O arquipélago da insônia", written by Antônio Lobo Antunes

Maria Clara Antonio Jeronimo 05 April 2011 (has links)
This work proposes an analysis of two novels by the portuguese writer António Lobo Antunes, taking into consideration narrative instances that, from our point of view, are highlighted in the authors work. The books are Ontem não te vi em Babilônia, novel that was published in 2006, and O arquipélago da insônia, published in 2008. The novels make up the authors most recent production cycle, in which the formal and aesthetic experiences are much more intense than in his previous novels. Besides that, these works show thematic convergences that appear in careful reading of the books titles: Ontem não te vi is the representation of time passing, time of frustration; Babilônia is Babel, the biggest symbol of incommunicability for the West. Arquipélago is a group of islands, a gathering that is noticeable for its isolation and incommunicability; Insônia is equally a frustrated wait for something that never arrives, in this case, sleep, which is a metaphor for death in his novels. Therefore, this work is going to focus on the analysis of space, taking into consideration the house as a symbol; time, as death and sleepless; and the text, that is, basically, presented as a discursive overflow. This way, we will enter in Lobo Antunes universe and, what seems to be the authors desire to reveal ourselves and our time

Bullying, Loneliness, and Future Responses to Stress

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: Bully victimization has been associated with blunted cardiovascular responses to stress as well as elevated responses to stress. The difference between these altered physiological responses to stress is largely unknown. This study explored several possible moderators to the relationship between chronic stress and future cardiac output (an indicator of increased stress) in response to future stressors. These moderators include the difference between social and physical stressors and individual levels of loneliness. Participants were administered measures of loneliness and victimization history, and led to anticipate either a "social" (recorded speech) or "non-social" (pain tolerance test ) stressor, neither of which occurred. EKG and impedance cardiography were measured throughout the session. When anticipating both stressors, loneliness and victimization were associated with increased CO. A regression revealed a three-way interaction, with change in cardiac output depending on victimization history, loneliness, and condition in the physical stressor condition. Loneliness magnified the CO output levels of non-bullied individuals when facing a physical stressor. These results suggest that non- bullied participants high in loneliness are more stressed out when facing stressors, particularly stressors that are physically threatening in nature. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S.

Leidens, Francisco Rafael 21 July 2011 (has links)

At the same time as the radical solitude enables unique experiences, the communication becomes impaired, since it is based on a predetermined language for moral values (gregarious), does not represent, then, what is unique and not transferable. The result is a problematic book, in relation to their address ("a book for everyone and anyone") and in relation to its internal development (Zarathustra's disappointment when you want to communicate, initially to people, at the "Prologue", to his disciples, and finally, to the superior men). What Zarathustra wants to communicate, initially, and intensely in books I and II, is the superman, which proves to be a means to support the eternal return. Without this support the realization (that ultimately ends up consisting of, in addition, a way of understanding "affirmatively" the cyclical nature of the world), the eternal return can not be communicated and remains, according to the hypothesis defended, a solitary and silent thought. We assume, finally, in this work, the extemporaneity of Thus spoke Zarathustra; waiting for an appropriate hearing and those who have an experience similar to Nietzsche/Zarathustra / Este trabalho pretende, sobretudo, evidenciar um problema fundamental em Assim falava Zaratustra, a saber: há uma tensão entre solidão e comunicação que acaba determinando os rumos deste livro quanto às pretensões afirmativas de Nietzsche.

Abstract: Discuss the experiences of homeless with abuse of alcohol in an institution Confessional. Subjects and Methods: Clinical-qualitative research with semi-structured Interview to open question. Data collection was in the Fraternity Toca de Assis. The research subjects had nine homeless, and used the criterion of saturation for the closing of the sample. Used the technique of analysis of thematic content for the formation of the categories approved by peers. Results: Extracted three papers: "Facilities and barriers in field research by the way of the use of qualitative methods in health informal institution"; "to fill an empty stomach.": the use of alcohol according to reports from ex-homeless"; "turned a beggar": reports of ex-homeless sheltered in a Confessional Institution in Brazil". Discussion: The choice of a field beyond the usual of institutionalized health professionals led a discussion about the challenges of entering the field, as well as data collection. We believe that reporting this experience add elements to the methodology chosen theorists. In reporting the experience of life of research subjects was emphatically a personal relationship with the subject the phenomenon of abuse of alcohol and the process of psychological deconstruction of identity. Conclusions: It can be built a new life mainly by the homeless. It seems that they want to leave the streets, even if this seems distant. / Mestrado / Ciencias Biomedicas / Mestre em Ciências Médicas

The intention is to study a certain communication habit of people aged 60 years or older, legally defined as elderly in Brazil and investigate an characteristic of contemporaneity: the sharing of virtual and digital contents through platforms or devices known as smartphones, notebooks, PCs, tablets or phablets with access to the world wide web. Specifically, an attempt is made to evaluate how technological supports can contribute to the formation of contents related to citizenship, to the rights of the elderly, to the image of old age or your social representation. For this, a qualitative approach is used. Is used here a content analysis, theory traditionally described by Laurence Bardin. And, above all, it seeks to enrich, through the present research, the approaches related to old age with a look from the field of communication. The theoretical course addresses the context in which the notion of old age is inserted and emphasizes the communication as a foundation for citizenship. The results of the empirical research demonstrated the presence, even small, of contents, considered as of “civic engagement”, presumed here as a condition for a transformation of the citizenship status of the elderly. Featured for the results of the Communication category, identificated in content analysis, for its importance to helping the elderly to get out their isolation, of their loneliness and, often, even a more serious state of depression. The Search category indicated the importance of the smartphone to the elderly lives providing to they a knowlege that they didn´t have. In the Intergenerational Relationship category, the possibility of re-signification of the relationships between the young and the elderly was perceived. Work and Political Participation were categories that indicated a greater proximity of the subject of “civic engagement” but did not came out so much, in the material collected. Self-Help and Humor categories appeared as types of important content in the daily life of the elderly when they using the social networks. The data show that, for the sample, in that social contexts inserted, the New Information and Communications Technologies (NICTs) exerts influence on the social reinsertion and public visibility of the elderly, incipient civic engagement as well as their social capital. Despite the problems of the digital virtual environment, this space offers the elderly or more people a way of breaking the isolation that many experience, reducing the perception or feeling of loneliness through the relationship with people close and distant or a promotion of new contacts of friendship. In this way, the internet, for the elderly, is more than a source of income, service, learning or entertainment research. For this public, the Internet and the NICTs can offer the rescue of the old friends, promote new and strengthen intergenerational family ties.

This work proposes to analyze the human condition in big contemporary cities, considering, above all, the loneliness as a patent aspect in the urban person. When we point out the metropolis as a reliable place to the development of post-modern ideas and practices, we consider the city man as a product of this space and this context. Through the novel The photographer (O fotógrafo) from Cristóvão Tezza, we will try to relate the loneliness to its imagery representation within the work since, throughout the narrative, images are built – selected and registered by the characters’, the author’s and even the reader’s photographic look – which send us to these lonely impressions. Thus, we will carry out discussions concerning post-modern times, the contemporary metropolis, the individual and the effects of urban life on his behavior, his intimacy and his life. Notes on image and photography will be crucial and we will bring them up by means of the view of critics like Joly, Amont, Barthes, Sontag, Benjamin and Dubois.
