Forjados nas estrelas: educaÃÃo e doutrina espÃrita atravÃs de vidas em (trans)formaÃÃo / Forged in the stars: education and spiritist doctrine through lives in (trans)formation

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico / A linha tÃnue que separa a EducaÃÃo da Doutrina EspÃrita, expressa na sua ambiÃncia, na proposta de autoconhecimento viabilizada pela experiÃncia mediÃnica, pelas trocas culturais que se estabelecem na internacionalizaÃÃo de conceitos e prÃticas, e, principalmente, pelo estudo que teve sua gÃnese, em territÃrio brasileiro, atravÃs do Estudo Sistematizado da Doutrina EspÃrita, constituem o solo para uma transformaÃÃo espiritual aqui denominada educativa, pois que pressupÃe uma formaÃÃo continuada dos partÃcipes nas variadas atividades promovidas pelo movimento em anÃlise. Tais atividades (encontros, congressos regionais, nacionais e internacionais, palestras pÃblicas, atividades assistenciais, estudos em grupo e a educaÃÃo da mediunidade) sÃo aqui analisadas como dispositivos importantes de sustentaÃÃo da transformaÃÃo ora menciona da, atravÃs da vida posta em modelo de Carlos Roberto Campetti. A vida deste atual diretor da FederaÃÃo EspÃrita Brasileira, cujos sintomas da mediunidade e os primeiros rudimentos doutrinÃrios espÃritas se deram ainda na infÃncia, a experiÃncia desde a adolescÃncia na divulgaÃÃo da Doutrina EspÃrita, a internacionalizaÃÃo desta em mais de vinte paÃses percorridos (AmÃrica Latina, Estados Unidos e Europa), e a sua participaÃÃo na consolidaÃÃo do estudo doutrinÃrio da Doutrina EspÃrita, na qualidade de Coordenador Nacional da Ãrea de Estudo do Espiritismo â foi escolhida por congregar didaticamente aspectos importantes que fundamentam a transformaÃÃo espiritual subsidiada por uma formaÃÃo que se estende, portanto, da vida Ãntima ao ambiente de estudos e prÃticas promovidas pelo movimento espÃrita que se estrutura em torno da EducaÃÃo. Propomos, portanto, como objetivo geral de nossa investigaÃÃo, analisar a aproximaÃÃo existente entre EducaÃÃo e Doutrina EspÃrita como fundamento para uma (trans)formaÃÃo espiritual, atravÃs da vida de Carlos Roberto Campetti. Encontramos nos mecanismos da HistÃria de Vida e da HistÃria Oral (BOSI, 1994; MARTINHO RODRIGUES, 2007, 2013; TUCHMAN, 1995; VEYNE, 2014) o suporte metodolÃgico da pesquisa que contou, alÃm da vida do personagem principal, com a participaÃÃo de mais nove sujeitos, convidados a entrecortarem a histÃria de vida principal com suas prÃprias experiÃncias, enriquecendo os dados coletados com seu envolvimento nas muitas Ãreas de atuaÃÃo que a Doutrina EspÃrita oferece. Fundamentamos teoricamente nossa pesquisa, à guisa de introduÃÃo da discussÃo e anÃlise, na pedagogia de Comenius (2010, 2011a, 2011b, 2014, 2015), nas conceituaÃÃes doutrinÃrias de Kardec (2007, 2008a, 2008b, 2008c, 2009, 2013) e, como apoio secundÃrio, em Denis (2006, 2013, 2014), Pires (2008) e Colombo/Incontri (2001, 2010, 2012). Dispomos integralmente as histÃrias das vidas de nossos sujeitos dentro do universo das categorias de Autoconhecimento, InternacionalizaÃÃo e EducaÃÃo Universal do EspÃrito. ConcluÃmos que a espiritualidade pode ser uma experiÃncia cultural, percebida por uma transformaÃÃo espiritual com traÃos educativos continuados atravÃs de uma formaÃÃo e manutenÃÃo que se estabelece nas experiÃncias pedagÃgicas possÃveis no ambiente doutrinÃrio escolhido livremente pelo sujeito. A narrativa da vida principal e as demais revelaram que a experiÃncia pessoal dos sujeitos, bem como as suas formaÃÃes profissionais, sÃo iluminadas e valorizadas num ambiente religioso com tonalidades educativas, no que concerne à formaÃÃo doutrinÃria, como, tambÃm, no que diz respeito ao seu processo de autoconhecimento. Tais caracterÃsticas de experiÃncia religiosa geram impactos educacionais positivos na vida pessoal e familiar dos sujeitos consultados, donde deduzimos que tais realidades podem ser conduzidas para as suas experiÃncias fora do ambiente religioso no qual se (trans)formam, o que implica um fenÃmeno educacional importante se consideramos a contribuiÃÃo desta (trans)formaÃÃo para a vida em sociedade. / The fine line that separates Education and the Spiritist Doctrine, expressed in its environment, inside the proposal of self-knowledge made possible by experiencing being a medium, by cultural exchanges established in the internationalization of concepts and practices, and, especially, by the study of its genesis, in Brazilian territory, through the Spiritist Doctrineâs Systematic Study, paving the way to a spiritual transformation here denominated educational, for it presumes a continuous education from the participants in various activities promoted by the movement in analysis. Such activities (gatherings; regional, national and international congresses, public lectures, charity work, group study and medium education) are here analyzed as important tools to ground the aforementioned transformation, through living life as exemplified by Carlos Roberto Campetti. The life of Brazilian Spiritist Federationâs current director â whose medium symptoms and first rudiments of spiritist doctrine were acquired during childhood; his experience since his teenage years in spreading the Spiritist Doctrine, its internationalization to over twenty visited countries (Latin America, United States and Europe), and his participation in the consolidation of the Spititist Doctrineâs doctrinary study, as the National Spiritism Studies Coordinator â was chosen for didactically congregating important aspects that fundament the spiritual transformation subsidized by an education that, therefore, extends itself from oneâs personal life to the study environments and practices promoted by the spiritist movement, which structures itself around Education. It is proposed, therefore, as a general objective on this investigation, an analysis on the existent approximation between Education and the Spiritist Doctrine as a fundament of a spiritual transformation, through Carlos Roberto Campettiâs life. It was found in the mechanisms of Life Story and Oral History (BOSI, 1994; MARTINHO RODRIGUES, 2007, 2013; TUCHMAN, 1995; VEYNE, 2014) the methodological support for this research, which, besides the main characterâs life, counted with the participation of nine other subjects, invited to interconnect the main life story with their own experiences, enriching the collected data with their involvement in the many areas of expertise the Spiritist Doctrine offers. This research was theoretically backed up, based on the introduction of discussion and analyses, the pedagogy of Comenius (2010, 2011a, 2011b, 2014, 2015), the doctrinary conceptions of Kardec (2007, 2008a, 2008b, 2008c, 2009, 2013) and, as a secondary support, Denis (2006, 2013, 2014), Pires (2008) and Colombo/Incontri (2001, 2010, 2012). The subjectsâ life stories are fully displayed inside the following categoriesâ universe of Self-knowledge, Internationalization and Universal Education of the Spirit. It is concluded that spirituality can be a cultural experience, subsidized by a spiritual transformation with educative traits continued through an education and a recycling that establishes itself in the pedagogical experiences made possible by the doctrinary environment, freely chosen by the subject. The main lifeâs narrative along with the others reveal that the subjectsâ personal experience, as well as their professional education, are highlighted and valued in a religious environment with educative undertones, concerning the doctrinary education, as well as concerning the process of self-knowledge. Such characteristics of religious experiences generate positive educational impacts in the consulted subjectsâ personal life, thus one could infer that such realities can be conducted to their experiences outside of the religious environment where they transform, which implies an important educational phenomena if taken into consideration the contribution of this transformation to life in society.

A saber, à trajetória de vida de Beatriz, entre 2011 e 2016 na cidade de Juiz de Fora, que participou da fundação do VisiTrans e é militante pelo Coletivo da Diversidade Sexual e de Gênero “Duas Cabeças”, e sua luta é pelas “pessoas que passam pelo o que eu passo”. Ou seja, não só pelo percuso das transformações corporais, mas pelas faltas e falhas de políticas públicas que patologizam sua subjetividade ao invés reconhecer pessoas trans como sujeitos de direito. Esta trajetória percorre o caminho da implementação das primeiras políticas públicas para a diversidade sexual e de gênero no Brasil e dos conflitos sexuais nacionais decorrentes desta concessão de direitos que reverberam na cidade mineira de Juiz de Fora. Especificamente esta pesquisa apresenta uma análise etnográfica sobre a paulatina introdução desta trajetória de vida na militância universitária pela diversidade sexual e de gênero na Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora buscando refletir e compreender como esta trajetória, ao agenciar sua militância, segue negociando sua autonomia trans nos âmbitos da saúde, do direito e da política. Assim foi possível alcançar algumas considerações sobre três aspectos, o primeiro sobre a restrição da autonomia trans no âmbito da saúde e do direito que levaram esta trajetória a aderir e agenciar estratégias locais eficazes, porém, que demosntram a necessidade do aperfeiçoamento do processo transexualizador do SUS e a despatologização da transexualidade. O segundo sobre como em uma situação de conflito sexual na política a autonomia trans ao mesmo tempo pode ser cerceada e pode ser protagonizada em níveis distintos. E terceiro sobre em que termos políticos torna-se possível uma autonomia trans incorporada. / This thesis aims to describe and analyze a trans militancy trajectory in the city of Juiz de Fora including in the anthropological discussion of gender and sexuality studies. Namely, the Beatriz trajectory of life, between 2011 and 2016 in the city of Juiz de Fora, who participated in the foundation of VisiTrans and she is militant by the Collective of Sexual Diversity and Gender "Duas Cabeças", and their struggle is for the “people who lives what I live”. In other words, not just only by way of the body changes, but for the faults and public policy failures that pathologizing the subjectivity instead to recognize the transsexual people as subjects of law. This path runs along the path of implementation of the first public policies for the gender and sexual diversity in Brazil and of the national sexual conflicts arising from this grant of rights reverberate in the city of Juiz de Fora. Specifically this research presents an ethnographic analysis of the gradual introduction of this trajectory in the university militancy for gender and sexual diversity in the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora seeking to reflect and understand how this path to entice their militancy continues to negotiate its transsexual autonomy in the health, law and policy areas. Thus it was possible to achieve some considerations about three aspects, first of all on the transsexual restriction autonomy on the scope of health and rights that led this trajectory to subscribe to and procuring effective local strategies, though, demonstrating the need for improvement of SUS transsexual process and despathologization of transsexuality. The second on in a sexual conflict in the transsexual autonomy policy can be decreased and at the same time be carried out at distinct levels. And the third on which political terms it is possible a built transsexual autonomy.

[pt] Um olhar no passado: Memórias de Infância em Tanguá tem como objetivo estudar as memórias de infância de velhos moradores da cidade. Esta dissertação busca a compreensão das seguintes questões: qual a relação entre a cidade de Tanguá e as crianças ao longo de sua história? Qual a importância da recuperação das memórias de vida dos velhos moradores da cidade para o trabalho com a educação infantil? Analisar as memórias de infância visa responder a estas questões para conhecer o lugar da infância na história da cidade. Visa também descortinar a visão de infância que ao longo da história foi construída pelos moradores e revelar outras histórias de Tanguá que não foram contadas na história oficial. Foram escolhidos como referências teóricas desta dissertação os autores: Walter Benjamim, Ecléa Bosi e William Corsaro. Estes produziram obras que, por caminhos diferentes, valorizaram a narração, o encontro e a relação entre os seres humanos como princípio que permite a compreensão crítica da realidade e da história e a participação na vida social.O primeiro capítulo traz os caminhos que levaram à estruturação desta pesquisa, os objetivos, a apresentação da cidade de Tanguá, a relação da pesquisadora com a cidade, bem como a revisão bibliográfica e a metodologia utilizada. No segundo capítulo estão as relevantes contribuições dos autores, citados acima, para esta dissertação, contribuições estas que foram fundamentais para pensar qual o lugar da infância na cidade de Tanguá ao longo da história e para a compreensão do valor da narrativa no trabalho com crianças na educação infantil. O terceiro capitulo apresenta um breve resumo sobre a história de cada entrevistado e sua relação com a cidade, o trabalho e a vida. O quarto capítulo traz as análises das histórias de vida e as categorias que emergiram das narrativas dos velhos moradores da cidade. No quinto capitulo as memórias são analisadas sob o prisma das possibilidades educativas que estas possuem para as futuras gerações da cidade, especificamente para o trabalho com a Educação Infantil. O capitulo final, parte do que é possível aprender com as histórias de vida e traz recomendações para a valorização da narrativa no trabalho com a educação infantil. / [en] A look to the past: Childhood memories in Tanguá aims to study childhood memories of old residents of the city. This dissertation seeks understanding of the following questions: what is the relationship between the city of Tanguá and children throughout your history? What is the importance of rescuing memories of life from the old residents of the city to work with early childhood education? Analyze the childhood memories aims to answer these questions to get to know the place of childhood in the history of the city. It also aims to uncover the vision of childhood that throughout history was built by locals and reveal other Tanguá stories that have not been told in the official story. Were chosen as theoretical references of this dissertation authors: Walter Benjamim, EcléaBosi and William Corsaro. These had produced works that, for different ways, had valued the narration, the meeting and the relation between the human beings as principle that allows to the critical understanding of the reality and history and the participation in the social life. The first chapter brings the ways that had led to the structuring of this research, the objectives, the presentation of the city of Tanguá, the relation of the researcher with the city, as well as the bibliographical revision and the used methodology. In the second chapter are the relevant contributions of the authors, mentioned above, for this dissertation, these contributions were fundamental to think what the place of childhood in the town of Tanguá throughout history and to understand the value of narrative in the work with children in early childhood education. The third chapter presents a brief summary about the history of each respondent and your relationship with the city, work and life. The fourth chapter brings the analysis of life stories and categories that emerged from the narratives from the old residents of the city. In the fifth chapter the memories are parsed on the prism of educational opportunities that they have for future generations of the city, specifically to work with early childhood education. The final chapter, starts from what you can learn of the stories of life and brings recommendations for enhancement of the narrative at work with early childhood education.

[pt] Este trabalho objetivou lançar luz sobre o processo de profissionalização docente marcado pela atuação em escolas privadas que atendem aos setores populares da sociedade a partir das histórias de vida de seus professores. Para isso, foram entrevistadas onze professoras atuantes numa dessas escolas, situada na Zona Sul da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Olhando para as trajetórias percorridas por essas professoras, buscando convergências nas particularidades, foi possível perceber como a identidade profissional de cada uma é construída no caminhar, na trilha a qual aderiram a partir de suas muitas experiências pessoais e profissionais. Neste sentido, o trabalho incide, inicialmente, sobre a vida dessas professoras, descortinando o fato de que esse grupo fez do magistério a escolha possível, passando por um processo de aderência à profissão durante sua formação ou já em sua atuação profissional, dando novo sentido à ideia de vocação. Discute, então, a prática pedagógica do corpo docente nesse contexto, marcada pela ênfase na transmissão de conteúdos, na manutenção de atividades rotineiras e no trabalho solitário de cada profissional. Apresenta, ainda, a força das relações pessoais estabelecidas entre direção e corpo docente e analisa aspectos relativos às condições de trabalho nessa escola. Dessa forma, busca compreender a posse, por parte dessas professoras, de um capital pedagógico específico e a constituição de um habitus profissional em constante adaptação. Finalmente, problematiza a profissionalização docente nesse tipo de escola, trazendo à tona aspectos que aproximam e outros que distanciam esse corpo docente do imaginário relativo à docência nas escolas privadas. / [en] This study aimed to shed light on the process of professionalization of teachers marked by the performance in private schools that cater to the popular sectors of society from the life stories of their teachers. For this, we interviewed eleven teachers working in these schools, located in the southern city of Rio de Janeiro. Looking at the trajectories followed by these teachers, looking for convergence in particular, it was possible to see how the professional identity of each is built on the walk, which joined the trail from his many personal and professional experiences. In this sense, the work focuses initially on the lives of these teachers, revealing the fact that this group made the choice of teaching as possible, through a process of attachment to the profession during their education or already in their professional development, giving new meaning the idea of vocation. Then discusses the pedagogical practice of faculty in this context, with the emphasis on content delivery, maintenance of routine activities and in the solitary work of each professional. It also presents the strength of personal relationships established between faculty and management and examines issues related to working conditions at the school. Thus, it seeks to understand the possession, by these teachers, of a specific pedagogical capital and the creation of a professional habitus constantly adapting. Finally, it analyzes the professionalization of teachers in this school, bringing up points that approximate and others that separate this faculty of imagination on the teaching in private schools.

“I Refuse to Give Up!” A Qualitative Investigation of the Conditions and Experience Undergone by Students on Academic Probation Who Participated in Academic Companioning in a University Context

This study examined the conditions and experience of students who were placed on academic probation in view of key elements of Dewey’s (1958, 1938/1997, 1934/2005) theory of experience. Core data emerged from 16 in-depth interviews with five students who received assistance from an academic support program while on probation. An additional interview was conducted with the academic companion and another with the program developer. A document analysis and a researcher journal supplemented the data. The interviews were analyzed according to a three-dimensional narrative inquiry space (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000; Dewey, 1958, 1938/1997) to produce profiles and thematic connections (Seidman, 2006). Findings are presented in five texts. The first and second manuscripts depict the stories of two students using the profile genre. These texts disclose rich stories where the meaning of experience is lived. A third manuscript examines students’ experience from the student and professional perspectives. Major themes uncovered, include (a) resistance to seek help; (b) deep personal costs; and (c) a desire to succeed and complete their undergraduate studies. A fourth manuscript explores companioning as experienced by students and supported by resource personnel. It reveals that (a) the companioning role was defined by a specific form of guidance and attendance to self-confidence and (b) the program helped students clarify their needs, promoted their adaptation to the university context, and offered support through a positive relationship. A fifth manuscript examined the characteristics of a fruitful helping relationship. Findings suggest that (a) a rapport characterized by presence and trust and (b) an approach promoting responsibility, awareness, and holism were key. These findings offer a weighty contribution to the literature on post-secondary education by revealing rich and unique experiences. By tapping in the complexity of the participants’ experience, findings help shift away from the current focus on obstacles and deficiencies often attributed to probationary students. Résumé Cette étude a examiné l’expérience d’étudiants ayant été placés en probation académique à la lumière d’éléments-clés de la théorie de l’expérience de Dewey (1958, 1938/1997, 1934/2005). La principale source de données provenait de 16 entrevues en profondeur auprès de cinq étudiants ayant participé à un programme d’accompagnement universitaire alors qu’ils étaient en probation académique. Une entrevue a aussi été menée avec l’accompagnatrice et une autre avec la conceptrice du programme. Une analyse documentaire et un journal de bord de la chercheure complètent les données. Les entrevues ont été analysées selon une analyse narrative tridimensionnelle (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000; Dewey, 1958, 1938/1997) de façon à produire des profils et des liens thématiques (Seidman, 2006). Les résultats sont présentés dans cinq textes. Les premier et deuxième textes dépeignent l’histoire de deux étudiants sous forme de profils. Ces textes découvrent de riches et profondes histoires véhiculant la probation comme expérience de vie et la signification attribuée à celle-ci. Le troisième texte présente l’examen collectif de l’expérience des cinq étudiants ayant participé au programme d’accompagnement. Cette analyse est enrichie des perspectives de l’accompagnatrice et de la conceptrice du programme. Trois thèmes se dégagent de l’expérience de ces étudiants en probation académique soit (a) une résistance à faire usage des services de soutien; (b) des coûts personnels considérables; et (c) un désir de réussir et de compléter leur programme d’études. Un quatrième texte explore l’expérience d’accompagnement tel que perçu par les étudiants et les professionnels. L’analyse révèle que (a) l’accompagnatrice agissait à titre de guide et était attentive à la dimension de la confiance en soi et (b) le programme a aidé les étudiants à identifier leurs besoins, a soutenu leur adaptation au contexte universitaire, et a offert un soutien personnalisé par l’entremise d’une relation d’aide positive. Le cinquième texte se concentre sur les particularités d’une relation d’aide efficace en contexte de probation académique. Les résultats relèvent que cette expérience est qualifiée par (a) un rapport de présence empathique et empreinte de confiance réciproque et (b) une approche globale favorisant la responsabilité et la conscientisation. En dévoilant la richesse et l’unicité de l’expérience, ces résultats offrent une contribution intéressante. Illustrant la complexité des expériences de probation ils contribuent à s’éloigner d’une vision centrée sur les obstacles et les déficits des étudiants en probation académique.

Os meios de comunicação de massa, o sistema educacional e as representações que são produzidas das mulheres negras acabam por essencializar os espaços que elas devem ocupar. Nessa perspectiva as representações da prostituição acabam por ser um espaço essencialmente feminino, e principalmente negro. É através do mito da democracia racial freyreano que o Brasil vai negar o reconhecimento positivo da população negra. Nesse discurso falacioso os índices de exclusão, de acesso e permanência na escola, a baixa remuneração, as estruturas familiares e afetivas contradizem com o modelo harmônico defendido pelo mito. As mulheres negras a partir de um discurso racista e sexista são reduzidas aos seus corpos e a sua sexualidade. Partindo dessa realidade, problematizamos as experiências de vida dessas mulheres buscando compreender a construção da subjetividade das mesmas e como a escolha pela prostituição se torna uma possibilidade real de escolha. Através da trajetória de vida nos foi possível apreender como opera a violência racial e de gênero para as mulheres negras, considerando que apesar de reconhecer a agência das mesmas às limitações do próprio sistema de opressão em que elas estão inseridas acabam por reduzir as possibilidades, tanto de reconhecimento como de sobrevivência. / The discussion concerning racial violence and gender has produced countless reflections over the maintenance of inequality that afflicts black women. The mass media, Educational System and the produced depiction of women lead to the sealing of places they should achieve. Within that perspective, the depiction of prostitution tends to be a mainly female space, specially for the black ones. Through the myth of racial democracy brought by Freyre, the positive recognition of the black population is denied in Brazil. According to this fallacious myth, the exclusion, access and permanence at school indexes, low income and the family and emotional structures go against the well balanced model proposed by the myth. Due to the sexist and racist discourses, black women are relegated to their bodies and sexuality only. Given this scenario and the life of those women, some questions were risen in order to understand the construction of their subjectivity and how prostitution has become a real choice possibility. According to their life experience, we managed to understand the way racial and gender violence happens to black women, despite of recognizing the limits of the system of oppression in which those women are inserted. The possibilities of being recognized and surviving are reduced.

Bakgrund: ALS är en obotlig sjukdom som orsakar muskelförtvining som leder till försämrad rörelseförmåga och inom en begränsad tid avlider patienten. En patient som inte känner mening i livet kan stöta på svårigheter beträffande förmåga att uppleva välbefinnande. Patienter som lever med ALS lever med en rädsla eftersom diagnosen innebär förlust av framtiden. Det är därför viktigt att patienterna får professionellt stöd av sjuksköterskan. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att beskriva patienters upplevelser av att leva med ALS. Metod: Studien bygger på en kvalitativ metod och data analyserades utifrån en kvalitativ innehållsanalys med en induktiv ansats som grundas på tre självbiografier och två biografier. Resultat: Det framkommer att patienterna som lever med ALS upplever ett förändrat livsperspektiv, ett nytt sammanhang, själsliga och kroppsliga påföljder samt att relationer påverkar välbefinnandet. Konklusion: Patienter som lever med ALS upplever både välbefinnande och lidande. Sjuksköterskan ansvarar för att patienterna ska erhålla rätt stöd samt hjälp som de önskar och är i behov av för att de ska känna livskvalitet i vardagen. Sjuksköterskans förhållningssätt och bemötande i det personliga mötet med patienterna bedöms vara avgörande för deras upplevelse av välbefinnande. / Background: ALS is an incurable disease that causes muscle loss which leads to impaired mobility and within a limited time the patient dies. A patient who does not know the meaning of life may encounter difficulties in the ability to experience well-being. Patients living with ALS live with a fear because the diagnosis means loss of the future. It is therefore important that patients receive professional support from the nurse. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe patients' experiences of living with ALS. Method: The study is based on a qualitative method and data were analyzed based on a qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach based on three autobiographies and two biographies. Results: It appears that patients living with ALS experience a changed life perspective, a new context, mental and physical sanctions, and that relationships affect well-being. Conclusion: Patients living with ALS experience both well-being and suffering. The nurse is responsible for ensuring that patients receive the right support and assistance that they desire and require to feel quality of life in their everyday lives. The nurse's approach in the personal encounter with the patients is considered to be crucial for their experience of well-being.

A qualitative exploration of the social construction of identity of black male Zimbabwean refugees currently living in South Africa

This study explored the social construction of black male Zimbabwean refugees’ identities as they experienced becoming refugees living in South Africa. A review of refugee literature revealed that Zimbabwean refugees demonstrate an exceptional nature that sets them apart from what most definitions of refugees assume. Refugee theory focusing on deficits and disorder promoted a view of refugees as helpless victims. As a result, refugees have come to be viewed as state burdens. Immigration practices characterized by the herding of refugees into spatially segregated areas, deportation and neglect continue to endanger the livelihoods of refugees. The manner in which government and media conceptualise the identity of a refugee has significant consequences for foreigners and locals. It is therefore important to explore the social construction of black male Zimbabwean refugees’ identities by investigating their own experiences through the telling of life stories. A process of in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with four black male Zimbabwean refugees between the ages of 18 and 50, all currently living in South Africa. A self told life story outlined a narrative of their past migration, present circumstances and future deliberations. Results showed that participants bore great suffering in search of a stable existence. They were subjected to political abuse and an immense economic downfall in Zimbabwe, and experienced a great shock of self-confidence upon leaving their home. They came to bear a painful sense of ‘otherness’ living as a foreigner, and had to develop new understandings of themselves. Race and religion became important signifiers of identity, and participants were said to undergo a posttraumatic growth in the aftermath of their turbulent experiences. A study such as this offers valuable insights into the aspects of a Zimbabwean refugee’s existence and needs. Den ojämna könsfördelningen i byggbranschen är än idag en utmaning för att förmå kvinnor att söka sig till, samt stanna kvar i branschen. Tidigare forskning gör det tydligt att det finns ett flertal orsaker till detta och pekar på olika tillvägagångssätt för hur könsfördelningen ska behandlas. Syftet med denna studie är att, genom tre kvinnors berättelser, undersöka deras upplevelser och erfarenheter från sina arbetsliv i byggbranschen, hur de återberättar om dessa och hur de framställer sig själva i sina återgivanden. Metoden för att inhämta data för att svara på studiens frågeställningar har varit genom livsberättelseintervjuer med tre kvinnor aktiva i byggbranschen. Resultaten från livsberättelseintervjuerna analyserades genom narrativ teori, varpå livsberättelser konstruerades. Därefter genomfördes analyser av livsberättelserna i enlighet med den narrativa teorin. Resultaten visade att de tre kvinnorna, var och en för sig, har haft unika upplevelser av och erfarenheter från sina arbetsliv. Deras unika berättelser visade även på hur deras handlande, vilka emotionsuttryck, relationer, meningsskapande och därigenom deras unika identiteter uttrycks i varje livsberättelse. De slutsatser som drogs från forskningsundersökningen var bland annat att byggbranschen har genomgått en förändring idag, jämfört med förr, avseende kvinnornas arbetssituation. Resultaten delvis motbevisar, men även styrker, den allmänna uppfattningen av byggbranschen som manlig och denna nyanserade bild bör efterfrågas mer i det offentliga samtalet. / The gender imbalance in the construction industry is still a challenge for attracting and retaining women in the industry. Previous research makes it clear that there are a number of reasons for this and points to different approaches on how to address the gender imbalance. The purpose of this study has been to examine three women's experiences from their working lives in the construction industry, how they recount these, and how they portray themselves in their accounts. The method for collecting data to answer the study's questions has been through life story interviews with three women active in the construction industry. The results of the life story interviews were analyzed through narrative theory, after which life stories were constructed. The life stories were then analyzed according to the narrative theory. The results showed that the three women, individually, have had unique experiences of their working lives. Their unique stories also revealed how their actions, emotional expressions, relationships, identity expressions and thus their unique meaning-making are portrayed in each life story. The conclusions drawn from the research study were, among other things, that the construction industry has undergone a change today, compared to the past, regarding the work situation of the women. The results partly refute, but also reinforce, the general perception of the construction industry as male and this nuanced picture should be requested more in the public discourse.
