Reviving Fortuny's Phantasmagorias

Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo (1871-1949) was a Spanish-born polymath who, though mostly remembered for his historically inspired fashion designs, was first trained as a painter in Paris and would become a lighting and set designer, photographer, costume designer, and inventor. Working in Venice at the turn of the 20th century with an insatiable appetite for the historic, the notoriously secretive artist was often called a magician. Fortuny was able to produce a realistic night sky using his own electric stage lighting system. He inverted traditional photographic processes by printing horizontally with natural light from the window in his darkroom. And his most enigmatic creation is a series of rarely seen photographic prints made in a lightless process where mounds of damp fabric were pressed onto sensitized paper to form an abstract multiplicity of wrinkles. Despite being an inventor who relied on technological advancements and experiments, Fortuny’s deeply historical temperament is evident in his own declaration: ‘Nothing is new in this world, so I do not pretend to bring new ideas’.He invented a machine for permanently pressing the Classical pleats of his delicate silk Delphos gown and with painted stencilling he re-created the glittering patterns of woven brocades and damasks from the Italian Renaissance – often copied from 16th-century painting. Marcel Proust utilized these garments, which remained largely unchanged over forty years of production, as Venetian emblems of memory in À la recherche du temps perdu, where they conjure Carpaccio’s exquisitely painted velvet robes. Inspired by classical Greece and Renaissance Italy, amongst other eras, Fortuny was wildly historic in the way he brought together forms and patterns from disparate times and places. Invoking Michel Serres’ illustration of multitemporality as a crumpled handkerchief, ‘Reviving Fortuny’s Phantasmagorias’ argues that Fortuny’s sense of time (like Proustian time) is pleated time – where the past touches the present. This thesis utilizes the concept of phantasmagoria in multiple ways. The antique-filled Gothic palazzo in which Fortuny lived and worked, which like the 19th-century interiors that Walter Benjamin describes, manifests a phantasmagoric layering of past upon present. ‘Reviving Fortuny’s Phantasmagorias’ also employs Theodor Adorno’s writing on Wagnerian opera and Marina Warner’s historicised account of phantasmagoria to apply the term to Fortuny’s stage lighting designs, clothing, and photography. The thesis follows Fortuny’s self-assessment that he was ‘first and foremost a painter’ to argue that it was ‘as a painter’ that he thought of light throughout his work across various media. Though he is often relegated to footnotes in the large bodies of scholarship on Proust and Wagner, ‘Reviving Fortuny’s Phantasmagorias’ centres on Fortuny and his work in Venice (a pivotal point of intersection for all three): the watery city of both memory and desire, of flickering golden light and dark, damp shadows. This thesis argues that Fortuny, as a revivalist, accessed the past through art objects and material visual culture, in his personal collection and from reproductions, to re-create them in the early 20th century. His work is phantasmagoric because of the way it uses light and darkness, shadows and projections, and movement and colour to bring historical images to life, bringing together a multiplicity of times. Though these themes are easily identifiable in Fortuny’s work, they have yet to be traced throughout his oeuvre in any major piece of writing.

In Search of a Room of Their Own

This diploma thesis in architecture is a book composed of a combination of embedded anthropological documentation and creative fiction, written with help from Virginia Woolf and Marcel Proust. It is a story built up, fragment by fragment, that describesregular visits to the Girls Night events at a Youth Centre in Fittja, in Northern Botkyrka, south of Stockholm, where the author went to meet and spend time with a group of local girls on Thursday evenings in the Spring of 2015. Ungdomens Hus is a Youth Centre in Fittja for locals between the ages of 15 to 22. Many boys come and play games here, including pool, ping-pong, video games, the Turkish game Okey, boxing, they also watch TV and generally hang out. The ability for girls to occupy this room, on the other hand, tends to be reduced to three hours a week, when the room becomes a space for the girls alone: A room of their own. On Thursday evenings Rädda Barnen and the municipality Botkyrka arrange the Girls Nights in the Youth Centre in Fittja. This forum is open for all girls between the ages of 15 to 20 years old who live in Northern Botkyrka. The Girls Nights exists to make it possible for young women to make their presence visible, and for them to be able to take space at the Youth Centre, developing their courage to take place in other public spaces and in the context of contemporary society more generally. / Detta examensarbete i arkitektur är en bok som fått sin form från en kombination av antropologisk dokumentation och fiktion, skriven med hjälp från Virginia Woolf och Marcel Proust. Historien byggs upp fragmentariskt och beskriver regelbundna besök på Tjejforum på en ungdomsgård i Fittja, Norra Botkyrka, Stockholm, där författaren mötte och spenderade tid med en grupp tjejer på torsdagskvällar under våren 2015. Ungdomens Hus är en ungdomsgård i Fittja för ungdomar (15-22 år) i området Norra Botkyrka. Många killar går dit. De spelar biljard, pingis, tevespel, okey, boxas, tittar på teve och umgås rent allmänt. Möjligheten för tjejer att ta plats i detta rum, å andra sidan, tenderar att reduceras till tre timmar per vecka då Ungdomens Hus förvandlas till ett rum för bara tjejer: deras eget rum. På torsdagskvällar anordnar Rädda Barnen tillsammans med Botkyrka kommun Tjejforum på Ungdomens Hus i Fittja. Verksamheten är öppen för alla tjejer (15-20 år) i Norra Botkyrka. Tjejforum finns för att unga kvinnor i Norra Botkyrka ska få synas och ta plats på Ungdomens Hus, i andra offentliga rum och i hela vårt samhälle.

A fortuna crítica de À la recherche du temps perdu sempre teve como um dos seus principais motes a relação da obra com outras artes, ou seja, uma construção estética baseada em uma relação de homologia estrutural com outros sistemas artísticos, dentre eles a música, a arquitetura, a própria literatura e a pintura. Essa construção faz com que a obra venha constantemente acompanhada do epíteto de museu imaginário. Especificamente, o nome do pintor holandês Johannes Ver Meer tem um lugar privilegiado na estética proustiana. Entretanto, nem todas as telas são mencionadas ao longo da narrativa. Somada a isso, a tessitura da escritura de Marcel Proust revela-se como um saber fortemente indiciário. Assim, a partir de índices que percorrem epístolas de Proust, textos críticos e a própria narrativa de À la recherche du temps perdu, esta tese cujo recorte de leitura é especificamente o episódio da lanterna mágica e seus desdobramentos defende que uma das telas de Ver Meer, a saber, A arte da pintura, é uma ausência epistêmica que, no entanto, faz-se presente, deixando inscritos na obra seus efeitos de significação. A fim de compreendermos essa presença-ausente, esta tese recorre ao conceito de letra, conforme o ensino de Jacques Lacan, os textos freudianos nos quais esse conceito estava em latência e os esclarecimentos e avanços feitos por Jacques Derrida, especificamente em seus textos da década de sessenta do século passado. Por efeitos de significação, concebe-se a ideia de que A arte da pintura realiza-se como uma ideia ausente, mas pungente no que tange aos efeitos estéticos de esmero do detalhe e dos processos descritivos, implicando uma relação de similitude entre o narrador em seu quarto, em lincipit de À la recherche du temps perdu e no episódio da lanterna mágica, e um artista em seu ateliê, presente na tela de Ver Meer, que incidirá em uma poética do detalhe. / The critical fortune of À la Recherche du Temps Perdu has always had, as one of its main threads, the relationship of work with other art forms, in other words, an aesthetic construction based on a relationship of structural homology with other Arts, including music, architecture, literature itself and painting. This ensures that the work is constantly accompanied by the epithet of the imaginary museum. Specifically, the name of the Dutch painter Johannes Ver Meer has a privileged place in the Proustian aesthetic. Nevertheless, not all canvases are mentioned during the narrative. Added to this, the tone of the Marcel Proust text reveals itself as a clear, evidentiary wisdom. Therefore, from indices that permeate the Proust missives, critical texts and the narrative of À la Recherche du Temps Perdu, this thesis, the scope of which is limited specifically to the episode of the Magic Lantern and its ramifications, argues that one of Ver Meers canvases, namely that of the Art of Painting, is epistemically absent, however it makes its presence felt through its effects of significance on the piece. In order to understand this absent-presence, this thesis uses the concept of the letter, according to the teachings of Jacques Lacan, Freudian texts in which this concept was latent, and in the clarifications and advances made by Jacques Derrida in his writings of the 1960s. For purpose of meaning, one has conceived the idea that The Art of Painting be like a missing yet poignant idea touching the aesthetic effects of minute detail and of the descriptive processes, implying an affinity in relationship between the narrator in his chamber, in l\'incipit of la Recherche du Temps Perdu and the episode of the Magic Lantern, and the artist in his studio, present on Ver Meers canvas, reflected in a poetic detail.

Assim como a questão essencial da teoria do efeito estético reflete sobre a possibilidade de descrever o processo complexo denominado leitura, esse estudo não procura compreender em toda sua extensão como o ato de leitura é representado na Busca do Tempo Perdido e teorizado por parte do escritor, mas descrever o modo pelo qual a metáfora da leitura como tratamento de miopia encarna-se em estruturas narrativas, ou seja - realiza-se no tempo - em feixes de acontecimentos que compõem o relato de uma vocação invisível, notadamente a singularidade do modo de leitura da figura central da obra de Proust, a que chamarei de leitura centrífuga, força de persuasão do livro que remete o leitor ao mundo não ficcional, que, embaralhando o fora e o dentro, resulta numa espécie de oftalmia. Pode a obra literária, tanto quanto a pintura, a fotografia e o cinema, desautomatizar a percepção visual? Pode a escrita, e o correlato da leitura, tal como as altas temperaturas, volatilizar os hábitos visuais anestesiados e acostumar os olhos a estesias imprevistas? Pode a leitura a prestidigitação? E o que pode, enfim, o leitor diante do prestidigitador? Seguindo uma pista lançada pelo próprio Proust num texto crítico sobre a leitura, a crítica proustiana vem dedicando bastante espaço à compreensão deste tema na Recherche. Em geral, essa compreensão tem sido levada a cabo por meio da análise das figurações da leitura no romance de modo a construir o posicionamento teórico do escritor sobre a leitura que, por sua vez, funcionaria como modelo para a leitura da própria Recherche. Entretanto, essas análises apontam para incoerências e contradições que potencialmente poderiam invalidar seu caráter de modelo. Revisitando algumas das interpretações críticas bem como o próprio ensaio de Proust sobre a questão, esta tese defende que a compreensão da leitura da Recherche vai além da discussão da figuração do tema no texto. Para isso, propõe a análise do papel do leitor dimensão textual virtual que comporta diversas operações interpretativas potenciais. Controladas pela organização do texto, isto é, por sua disposição arquitetônica, em seus mais diversos planos, essas operações, uma vez percebidas pelos leitores (o que não se deu imediatamente na história da recepção da Recherche) sustentam essas leituras (críticas ou não) de modo que podem ser vistas como a base ou as condições de possibilidade de toda e qualquer interpretação. / Following the clue given by Proust himself on his essay on reading, recently, proustian critics have been paying a lot of attention to this theme in A la Recherche. In general, these interpretations analyse the figurations of reading in the text which, in turn, is used as a model for the reading of Prousts text. However, many of these analyses point out to incoherencies in Prousts theoretical discourse which can invalidate its status as a model for the reader. Revisiting some of the analyses on the topic and Prousts own essay On reading, this thesis tries to indicate that the understanding of the subject of reading should move beyond the discussion of its figuration in the text. In order to do that, we propose an analysis of the role of the reader a virtual textual dimension formed by the interpretive operations designed by the text itself. Controlled by the organization of the materials that form the text, these operations, once perceived by the reader, support many of the critical readings of Prousts text and so, they are, as it seems, the foundations for most of the readings of A la Recherche.

Le seul vrai livre, pour Proust, est la traduction des impressions perdues dont la trace subsiste dans notre mémoire sensible. Les personnages entrent dans le texte de la Recherche en frappant la sensibilité du héros. Or, « toujours déjà là, » la grand-mère, comme la mère, relève d'une réalité qui ne s'est jamais imprimée, une réalité antérieure à la conscience du narrateur et de ce fait, antérieure au texte. Néanmoins, la grand-mère est une mère qui vieillit et qui meurt. Alors, elle apparaît au narrateur, suivant ainsi le chemin inverse de l'altérité. De présence immédiate pour le héros, il lui faudra devenir autre, une vieille femme étrangère, indéfinie dans son geste vers la mort, afin que le texte lui restitue une première impression. C'est précisément dans cette distance à parcourir, cet itinéraire entre l'immédiateté du départ et la première impression, que la spécificité du personnage de la grand-mère touche à ce que Proust qualifierait lui-même de « névralgie » de son texte. La réalité maternelle, pour devenir objet du style littéraire, doit se plier au trait de l'écrivain. In order to become an object for literary style, the mother must bend (se plier) to the writer's stroke. Yet, the mother character, as it is elaborated in the Recherche, seems to resist this bend. The grandmother character allows Proust to express the reality of the mother's decay and death, a mother made malleable by the hand of a son becoming a writer.
