Bandas’ music at the Santa Maria Mater Gratiae festival in Zabbar (Malta)

Iacovazzi, Giovanna 10 July 2009 (has links)
In Zabbar, a village in north-east Malta, two bandas, Maria Mater Gratiae and San Mikiel, have been rivals since they were founded in 1883. They are part and parcel of village life and bring life to the Santa Maria Mater Gratiae village festival each year, on the 8th of September. The music of bandas, of marches, is a popular, festive, religious, written music. Its role is neither decorative nor utilitarian, nor is it a strict social necessity, it is an actual complete social fact. It is part of a collective pratice in daily life and produces multiple sociabilities, exchanges, musical worlds, an imaginary musical universe full of movement. The first part of this thesis, which is ethnographic, describes the musical context of the village, drawing attention to the bandas, their seats (or kazin), their history, the role they play in the Maltese musical context. In the second part, banda music is discovered to be central to exchanges (musicians and music scores) and rivalries within the village space and the island itself. Then comes a description of the music within the festival and a comparative study meant to show how the bandas found their origins in the history of brass bands and orchestras. Finally, a last part is dedicated to musical analysis and aims at discovering the logic within those paraliturgical musics.

Andersson, Matilda January 2020 (has links)

The Third of March (2018), an Opera by Lu Pei: A Performer’s Guide to Selected Arias with the Composer’s Perspectives

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Lu Pei (b. 1956) is a celebrated Chinese American composer who currently serves as a composition professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. His work is known for its varied use of Chinese folk tunes. He lived in the United States a long time, which cultivated within him abundant Western musical influences. The sound of multi-ethnic elements is greatly reflected in his own music. Writing an opera has always been his ultimate dream as a composer, and after many years of work, the opera The Third of March was completed and premiered in 2018 in Guangxi. It has received wide acclaim and has been a favorite of younger listeners. Lu Pei aims to bring young people to modern music and the Chinese opera, not only using traditional Chinese musical elements, but also adopts “reinvented” modern Western musical styles, giving a new identity to the Chinese opera is the main foci of The Third of March. To prepare for my performer’s guide to The Third of March, I will discuss Lu Pei’s inspirations from the Guangxi Song Fairs, and the music and culture of the Zhuang people surrounding the date in the Chinese lunar calendar, March Third. For Westerners unfamiliar with Lu Pei’s music, I will briefly introduce the compositional blending of Western and Chinese musical styles with a section about Chinese composers active in the United States, Chen Yi (b. 1953), and Tan Dun (b. 1957). I will also include a brief outline of the history of Chinese opera development, and Lu Pei’s compositional concepts and the background of the opera The Third of March will be discussed. My performer’s guide, the primary focus of this project, will begin by stressing Lu Pei’s adoption of different Chinese folk songs and Western compositional elements. These techniques clearly gave the piece a unique stylistic identity. I will give a brief overview of the Chinese language diction in International Phonetic Alphabet. Finally, the qualities of the main arias in the opera, and some of the Chinese operatic techniques for singers, and their special effects, will be explored. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2020

“They’re not that different from us, really” : En analys om hur kejsarpingviner representeras i två naturfilmer.

Olsson, Evelina, Stjerna, Ida January 2019 (has links)

Breaking the Walls : The First Pride March in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mihaljevic, Stipo January 2020 (has links)
Pride Marches are usually considered as the most important manifestations of LGBTI activism and politics, either as festive and commercial celebrations or protests against violations of human rights of the LGBTI population. The first BiH Pride March from September 2019 successfully took the form of the latter, under heavy security measures and without any incidents in Sarajevo. Bosnia is regarded as a highly patriarchal country with strong homophobia and structural discrimination towards its minorities and marginalized groups. In that context, the Pride March is the most visible expression of LGBTI struggles for social recognition and acceptance. It also illustrates the status of human rights in BiH and represents a form of symbolic politics concerning the EU. This study aims to examine how the event was organized, how it indicated the human rights of LGBTI persons in the country, and what was the influence of Western Embassies and international organizations in BiH on its preparation and staging. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the organizers, the attendees, activists, and members of the LGBTI community in the country; 11 in total. The analysis shows a connection between the egalitarian Organizing Committee (activists/individuals) and the March´s claim for equality of LGBTI people in BiH society, including a correlation between the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and discrimination of LGBTI persons in BiH. The analysis also shows strong cooperation between the organizers and the international community in the country. The study concludes the March being organized as a collaborative and a multi-level project, indicating the discrimination and homophobia through additional security costs imposed on the organizers. Finally, the study finds the international community´s efforts as co-decisive for March´s success.

Twitter jako další bojiště? Analýza mediální kampaně izraelské armády na Twitteru během protestů v Gaze / Twitter as an additional battlefield? Analysis of Israel Defense Forces' social media campaign during the Great March of Return

Plíštilová, Tereza January 2020 (has links)
The respective master's thesis examines the relationship between frames and narratives and how they resonate with images on social media. In the present thesis I research how Israel Defense Forces framed the protests in Gaza also known as the Great March of Return from 30 March 2018 to 30 March of 2019 on Twitter. While analyzing the twitter account of Israel Defense Forces, I apply Entman's (1993) elements of framing and identify broader strategic narratives that Israel currently employs. The broader strategic narratives include "Israel as the only democracy in the Middle East"; "Israel as a startup nation" and "Israel as the leader in combating Islamic terrorism". In the theoretical part I also reflect on previous research and studies engaging with social media and its use by militaries. In the analytical part I identify individual frames that Israel Defense Forces have repeatedly employed during the protests in the respective timeframe. Each frame is accompanied by visual content and if available by the strategic narratives.

Feminist Practices and Representation of Women Characters in Little Women

Koroleva Sundgren, Jennifer January 2022 (has links)
This essay focuses on Louisa May Alcott's Little Women as a feminist novel and explores the representations of feminisms in the text. First, I argue Little Women is a novel that presents writing as feminist practice from a Künstlerroman perspective, which highlights Jo March's subversive feminism in the time. Next the essay shows how Jo’s gender fluidity helps her reconcile/negotiate her artistic aspirations and social expectations as part of her creative path. Finally, my essay also goes beyond Jo March's character to show how minor characters like the forgotten Beth March and emerging artist Amy March are a reminder of the text’s Künstlerroman focus, how patriarchy attempts to erase women like Beth who do not seem to fit into the stereotypes of the time due to their sickness or gender.
