Previous issue date: 2010-12-17 / In our nearly 40 years of teaching we have observed that many students have mathematics as a great number of rules and formulas that need to be memorized. They do not see any meaning in what they learn either. Few realize the applications of mathematics although they know that they really exist. In an attempt to teach mathematics in a more significant way we decided to conduct an experiment to find out what mathematical knowledge it "hides". The flow of a liquid was the chosen experiment. Analyzing it from a modeling point of view, we intend to find out if there is a mathematical model which can describe it. The functions were obtained from an analysis of initially discrete data and then making the transition to the continuous. Students had the opportunity to construct and interpret graphs associated with related functions, quadratic and polynomial of degree greater than two using Excel. We work with students of the three high school series in a public school. Each class was divided into groups of three or four members. We used the Didactical Engineering as a research methodology.

These philosophers main views on Mathematical Education, as perceived, are here organised in four exc1usively dedicated chapters, each of them selecting and approaching the core themes and arguments of each author. Accordingly, Diderot's main ideas on the topic are aimed at the political meaning of Mathematical Education, whereas to d' Alembert, the central aspect to be underlined is the Mathematical Epistemology. As for Condillac, the priority is given to the evolving cognitive frameworks. Finally, it is believed that Condorcet' s ultimate emphasis is on public education. The thesis initial and final chapters characterise the Mathematical Education contexts in France, respectively, in the Eighteenth Century before the French Revolution and in the Post-Enlightenrnent phase, from Condorcet's death to the French Restoration / Doutorado / Doutor em Educação

Previous issue date: 2008-04-28 / This study has animed at analysing the language used in a planned Mathematics activity by
means of its senses and meanings. It is a qualitative research under which we have worked
using the criterium of the best subject within the perspective of the Sociohistorical
Psychology and the methodology of filmed observation and interview, so that subjects reflect
about their practice by means of said resources. We have worked in a municipality of Greater
São Paulo, counting around 220 thousand inhabitants, and holding an active Mayor who
invests in education. The activity has been specifically filmed within the fundamental
education, precisely in a class of the 5th year. We have verified that the activity, though
planned, has not intentionally worked the speech elaboration, the oral language carefully
considering the analysis of possible meaning hypotheses that may occur, which would ensure
the work whtihin the Zone of Close Development and potentialize better results in the
teaching-learning process. We believe that the work under stake has firstly contributed to the
enlargement of the Sociohistorical Psychology study; secondly to improve the observation
technique, the data collection and the reflexion by the subject himself/herself; and last but not
least, with the increase of the attention to the oral language and its generalization, we dare to
say it is possible to use given study not only in the Mathematics classes but also in every
pedagogical practice, always bearing in mind that every knowledge production is multidetermined,
various factors contribute to its full accomplishment and the attention to the
language to be used is one of them, since it deserves our concern as well / Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a linguagem utilizada em uma atividade planejada de
Desenvolvimento Proximal e potencializariam resultados melhores no processo ensinoaprendizagem.

Previous issue date: 2008-11-03 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / According to the majority of educator s elementary school students show difficulties
in learning complex mathematic concepts, such as fractions. Such results urgently
recommend the development of new teaching methodologies able to help students to
overcome their difficulties. Behavioral analyst researchers have been making use of the
stimulus equivalence paradigm in order to teach a mathematical repertoire. This paradigm
allows to account for the emergency of new behaviors from other previously instructed, and
that happens when different stimulus classes are made to be equivalents. Based on this
paradigm point the present work elaborated and tested a procedure for teaching fractions
using the MESTRE (GOYOS, ELIAS & RIBEIRO, 2005) software as a tool. Three stimulus
classes were used: dictated proportional fractions (A), pictorial fractions (B) and printed
proportional fractions (C), all of them with values lower than 9.Participated of the study two
children age 9, in the 3rd grade of two private elementary schools of São Paulo city. The
teaching Schedule was applied over two participants with nine years old, students of the third
grade in private educational institutes (Sao Paulo South Square). Design involved pre-tests,
teaching phase and tests for emerging relations and generalization test. The AB and BC
relations were taught; relations BD, CB, AC and CD were only tested for emergency of other
relations (subjects should read printed proportional fractions). Generalization was tested
submitting students to fractions not previously taught. Part of these had denominators which
had not been employed during the training phase. Results indicated that not trained relations
BD, CB, AC and CD (where subjects should read printed proportional fractions) emerged
showing that stimulus classes A, B and C became equivalents. Besides students proved to be
able to read fractions without explicit training, making evident that the educational program
was effective and that the equivalence paradigm is a helpful tool the fill the gaps left behind
software educativo MESTRE (GOYOS, ELIAS & RIBEIRO, 2005).

Previous issue date: 2009-06-15 / This study aimed to emphasize the affective dimension as an important component
to be considered in the understanding of teachers working in adult and youth
education - EJA. Objective "understand the emotions and feelings involved in the
teaching performance of teachers of Mathematics Education for Youth and Adults
and provocative situations" questions: How did your start in teaching in EJA Course?
Which were the affective aspects (feelings and emotions) that the entry and presence
in the EJA Course you have? What are the most significant aspects in your
performance in EJA as a teacher? To justify the relevance of research, surveys
PRODEC to the production of theses and dissertations on the EJA. In the first
chapter, it has been discussed "the field and the issue of adult and youth education."
As the principal of the related theoretical work, in the second chapter, "the affective
dimension in Wallonian theory" has been discussed. Then, it is presented the
trajectory and methodological information about the interviews and diaries of ten
teachers, five from a public institution and five from a particular institution. The
information produced from the analysis of the interviews and diaries are presented in
chapter four. Some issues are applied in the analysis: the teachers consider
important the EJA Course, but realize that they have been started their activities
without specific preparation for this, the importance of other people to help them in
this new beginning of teaching was crucial, the care to teachers and students
necessities guarantee feelings of well-being for both, and not care, feelings of
malaise. As a result of the analysis, some suggestions are mentioned for training
teachers of EJA Course / O presente estudo objetivou ressaltar a dimensão afetiva como componente
Do objetivo compreender as emoções e
No primeiro
As
apresentadas no capítulo quatro.

Previous issue date: 2006-08-02 / The present study entitled The pedagogical error management in the mathematics
teaching and learning process: a case study aims to reflect and bring a meaningful
contribution to improve the quality of learning and teaching in the classroom, particularly
in Mathematics. During the years of experience either as a student or as a teacher, we could
notice that the liberator and constructive error was not given the necessary management it
deserved. One of the aims of this study is linked to the desire of creating a dynamics of the
learning and teaching process especially student and teachers in a critical, reflexive,
creative, and autonomous way. Among the issues put forward, we emphasise the necessity
to overcome the habit of using an error as a reason for punishment instead as a source to
rebuild knowledge. To overcome this habit and change the negative attitude towards
students error, from an epistemologic and didactic error viewpoint, a positive exploitation
is indicated considering the differences and the diversity of the cognoscenti. This
exploitation is based on the psychological learning theories and some works of authors
such as PIAGET (1989, 1990, 1991), VYGOTSKY (1998), FREIRE (1987, 2004), and
DEMO (2002a, 2002b, 2004). LUCKESI (2003) and AQUINO (1997) among others. It is
a question of a case study based on qualitative research where lesson observation and
interviews given to teachers and students were the main data collection techniques.
The findings allowed our understanding along the process and we went on realising that
teachers try to raise awareness about the need to value formative assessment and positively
manage their students error. However, this awareness is not pratical as can be seen in the
data analysis of the lesson observation and test marked by the teachers. The ritual and the
practiced testing system in the schools contribute towards how the learning and teaching
process is being conducted, since the concern is the mark (the test result) instead of
knowledge, lesson delivery improvement, and scientific knowledge achievement / O presente estudo intitulado A gestão pedagógica do erro no processo de ensino e
cognoscentes.

Previous issue date: 2006-05-15 / Secretaria da Educação / The purpose of this work was to investigate the role of language in the process of teaching integer numbers operations within the Young and Adult Education, specifically the aspect of comprehension of the established dialog by teachers or by text books. Our framework is based on Grice, according to this author there is a set of principles that guides the speaker s action through an efficient use of language for cooperative aims. Those Conversation Principles specify how participants should act in a conversation.
Our questions include 1) What is the environment proposed by teachers in classroom? 2) Which material are used in classroom? How is cooperation been established by the teacher and the used material according to Grice? Two questionnaires were elaborated and applied with twelve teachers. Results from analysis of questionnaire revealed that teachers were not cooperating in classrooms. Six different collections of text books were also analyzed and again failed in pursuing a clear dialog with lector.
Those findings lead us to further discuss a different environment where dialog is the main concern and to present an alternative for introducing integer numbers and operations / Esta pesquisa teve a preocupação de discutir o papel da linguagem no ensino das operações de números inteiros na Educação de Jovens e Adultos, especificamente o aspecto da compreensão do diálogo instaurado a partir do discurso do professor e do livro didático.

Previous issue date: 2006-06-08 / Pontificia Universidade de São Paulo / This study addressed questions related to the teaching and learning of Linear Algebra in Higher Education. More precisely, it involved the design of activities which concerned the mathematical object linear transformations and which engaged learners in exploring the conversion of registers in a dynamic geometry environment. The aim was to investigate the learning trajectories of university students and the impact of the didactical choices which characterized the teaching approach. The study was organized into two phases. In the first, preliminary studies along with theoretical considerations led to the formulation of hypotheses and to the identification of the conceptual tools to be used in the analysis of the learning trajectories. Using as a theoretical framework Duval s theory of semiotic representation registers (1995, 2000, 2003), during this phase the registers and conversions present in sections on linear transformations in both Linear Algebra and Computational Graphics textbooks were analyzed. In addition, eighty-six students of Computer Science completed a questionnaire about linear transformation. These studies highlighted difficulties in relation to the exploration of different semiotic registers on the part of the students, particularly as concerned matrixial and graphical registers. In the second phase, which employed the methodology of Design Experiments (COBB et al., 2003), activities were developed to explore the diverse representation of planar linear transformations using Cabri-Géomètre and paper&pencil environments. Six students of Computational Engineering at a private university in the city of São Paulo participated in the experiment. The results indicated evolutions in the subjects understandings of the conditions for determinating linear transformations and of the particularities of their graphs, as well as a more comprehensive mastery of diverse representations and conversions. Analysis of students trajectories also revealed how students strategies were mediated by characteristics of the tasks and the computational environment.

Previous issue date: 2006-10-16 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / This research has as objective verify if in a computer science environment allows
to the student to recognize some curves properties through representations and
graphical interpretations in dynamic way with the use of parameters for one
comprehension better of its equations. We verified that the articulating between
the points of view cartesian and parametric and the conversions among some
registers of semiotic representation it makes the student think about the
correlation that exists between some properties geometric of the plane curves and
its cartesian or parametric equations. For this research we elaborate a didactic
sequence based on some topics of the Didactic Engineering and we apply during
five sessions in a group of 10 students taking the third year of high school. We
verified that the graphic constructions of some plane curves varying the real
values of its parameters in its equations for the development of an GIF (Graphic
Information Format), they allow the students to observe the geometric effect
caused by this variation what it favors the understanding of the parameter notion in

Previous issue date: 2006-10-27 / The aim of this investigation was to identify and to analyze arguments and
metaphors used by a group of students of a master s degree course in Mathematical
Education for the rate of change, to understand how they learn this topic. The option of
working with those subjects relapsed in the fact that they are all teachers of Mathematics
and they have already seen Calculus in their graduation.
To those subjects, tasks were offered in a learning scenery where the dialogue
was privileged among teacher, students and technology. The vision adopted regarding the
technology was of a prothesis, in the sense that it makes it possible for the student to do
things different from the way that he would do without it. With the intention of working with
different texts, sometimes we offered tasks that the students interacted with the computer,
sometimes we offered a task which the prosthesis was a small canal made from a PVC
tube, tennis ball, ping-pong ball, chronometer and tape measure. The classes that the
students worked in those tasks were filmed using a VHS camera. Notes of some
speeches and interventions of the students and the teacher written on a notebook helped
to enrich the collection of data. The analysis was based on Embodied Cognition Theory
and on the Model of the Argumentative Strategy.
We conclude that the process of understanding medium rate of change and
instantaneous rate of change is not only the case of just a passage from one to another
analytical formula or from a graph to a formula. There is a difference among the cognitive
mechanisms to understand the graph and the analytic formula, which contributes to the
students' difficulty with that topic. It is not just the formal definition that is responsible for
that difficulty. We observed that with the aid of the computer science technology, it was
possible to create an environment where the fictive motion, intrinsic of the language,
became a factive movement. That is, when secants straight lines coincided with a tangent
straight line for successive approaches, and when the tangent straight line to the curve in
a point could move, at the same time the values of the slope of those straight lines could
be seen in the screen / Esta investigação teve por objetivo identificar e analisar argumentos e metáforas
