Pentecostalism as religion of peripheryArenari, Brand 20 January 2015 (has links)
All the analyses we have developed throughout this dissertation point to a central element in the emergence and development of Pentecostalism, i.e., its raw material – the promise of religious salvation – is based on the idea of social ascension, particularly the ascension related to the integration of sub-integrated social groups to the dynamics of society. The new religion that arose in the USA focused on the needs and social dramas that were specific of the newly arrived to the urban world of the large North-American cities, those who inhabited the periphery of these cities, those that were socially, economically, and ethnically excluded from the core of society. We also analyzed how the same social drama was the basis for the development of Pentecostalism in Latin America and, especially, in Brazil. In this country, a great mass of excluded individuals, also residents of urban peripheries (which proves the non-traditional and modern characteristic of these sectors), found in Pentecostalism the promises of answers to their dramas, mainly the anxiety to become integrated to a world in which they did not belong before. Such integration was embedded in the promise present in the modernity of social ascension. This scenario leads us to the conclusion that Pentecostalism was a religious discourse capable of taking the main promise of modernity to social groups or classes “forgotten” by modern society. Through a religious discourse, Pentecostalism fulfilled the notions of social mobility, and its consequent idea of individual ascension to the mass of people not yet fully integrated to the modern world, but living in it. Following, it became the Christian religion of blacks and mestizos, of the poor and all the others who felt out of place in that world. So the Pentecostalism became a religion of periphery par excellence.

Previous issue date: 2018-08-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This text presents as search object evangelic communities located in Carapicuiba, with
the aim to find elements among them that represents, manifest or rebuild African native
religion matrix religiosity. To achieve this goal observational and active engagement
on meetings and interviews with two Christian religious leaders and Candomble
obedentiary were performed. Historical and religious texts were also employed. In this
research the African native religion matrix influence was confirmed, not only, as initially
supposed by the Candomble touch points, but also with Afro-catholic traditions, as of
mystical prayers like "benzimento" (blessing), and popular belives on "simpatias"
(spells). Also noticed, the creation and development of these churches, teology and
peculiar cosmovision from Reformed as from Pentecostals tends to answer africanbrazilian
from diaspora religious yearnings, which re-create, in the middle of
oppression, their ancestral culture. The presented text opens up a window to
understand how afro-brazilian religiosity has been developing around the growing
Christian traditions in Brazil; how the black people from diaspora search, in a certain
way, to belong to the captive land, even after 130 years later from abolition.
Nessa pesquisa, ficou comprovada a influência

Previous issue date: 2015-06-29 / The present study (thesis) has as main objective to analyze and understand the
socio-cultural and religious influences arising from religions of African heritage on the
Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD). Over recent years it has been observed
significant changes in the Pentecostal ritualistic context, and specifically, Igreja
Universal do Reino de Deus, which began to use elements originating from African-
Brazilian religions in its rites. By means of bibliographical, documentary and case
study research, printed statements (flyers), regional and national coverage preaching
and also excerpts from the book Orixás, Caboclos & Guias, Deuses ou Demônios?
were analyzed with a focus on highlighting the use of elements from African religions,
its appropriation and redefinition. This research has shown that antagonistically, at
the same time that such items are used, they are also fought vehemently by
supporters of African-Brazilian and mediunical religions. The process takes place in a
hostile manner and among the doctrinal currents precipitating such a procedure it can
be stress the spiritual war against the devil, which has emerged as a source of
religious intolerance against African-Brazilian religions. It so happens that the IURD,
beyond taking ownership of such elements, assign to them new meanings. Breaks
out, thus, a new syncretic process that is stimulated by the religious nature of the
discourses. Through the theoretical conceptions that come from Foucault efforts, an
analysis of the discourses was arranged and have been noted that they stimulate
spiritual barriers especially against Umbanda and Candomblé adherents. Meanwhile,
to strengthen its discourses, IURD started to use up terms, elements, rites and
expressions stemming religions of African heritage with the purpose of creating a
point of contact with Brazilian popular belief. Allocating new meanings to religious
elements, IURD has contributed to the repositioning of the black identity among its
believers; but, at once, it seems that it also seeks to distort this same black identity in
the religions of African-matrix, attributing to them negative facets, relating them to the
devil, setting thus certain climate of religious intolerance between IURD and religions
of African- matrices. It may be seen that the use of elements of the religion regarded
as opposite and the redefinition of its major elements of identity is setting up a new
syncretic process in the field of Brazilian religions.

The present work intends to study the Brazilian Pentecostal movement through one of its major institutions, the Igrejas Evangélicas Assembleias de Deus (Assemblies of God Evangelical Churches) - AGs. With an approach anchored in the interdisciplinary dialogues with the Social Sciences, recommended by the New Cultural History, we analyze the changes in the identity of the classical assembly, in the process of accommodation to the society of consumers, a fact that we call the aggiornamento of the assemblian Pentecostalism. Founded by the Swedish Missionaries Daniel Berg and Gunnar Vingren in 1911, the AGs started the Pentecostal movement in partnership with the Christian Congregation of Brazil (CCB). One hundred years after its founding, they are found in most of the Brazilian municipalities and, according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) census, they already have over 12 million followers. Although the temporality of the survey is limited to the period from 1980 to 2010, a historical analysis was carried out, dating back to the 19th century, in
search of its original influences. One of the axes that guided the research was the idea that religious institutions representing Christianity always reflected the society of its time. Based on this premise, it was possible to perceive that the AGs conformed to the characteristics of Brazilian society in each phase of its history: they were ascetic and sectarian when the society was rural and very poor; propagated an exacerbated patriarchal authoritarianism when women could not vote and did not have their rights guaranteed by law; they were not involved in political parties and did not manifest themselves publicly repudiating social injustices; his discourse and theological standard prevailed for a life of behavioral austerity and resigned waiting for the apocalyptic return of Jesus Christ. Faced with a socioeconomic and cultural reality in constant transformation, under the influence of consumer capitalism and, in order to
face competition in the religious field, especially after the arrival of neo-Pentecostal churches, the institution implemented significant changes, which accelerated the process of transformation of ethos. Categories such as consumption, identity, relativism, secularization, pluralism, religious freedom, representations, strategies and tactics, present time, among others, supported the construction of the research object. The studies are focused on the General Convention of Assemblies of God in Brazil - CGADB and the AGs of the city of Imperatriz, Brazil.

Previous issue date: 2017-06-13 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Fundação São Paulo - FUNDASP / Analyzing the cultural construction of religion in Quilombo Brotas is the objective proposed
by this study. From the interdisciplinary spectrum of the Science of Religion, we offer an
approach from the disciplines of History, Anthropology and Sociology respectively.
Contextualizing the Quilombo Brotas historically, we consider the official historiographies
and those produced by themselves through the oral tradition. Being an urban quilombo
located on the outskirts of the city of Itatiba, we propose a perspective of anthropological
analysis of the quilombola as a peripheral subject. Ethnography describes the field from
the perspective of the quilombo located on the periphery. Based on Clifford Geertz we
produced our cultural interpretation of religion and reflected on ethnographic production
from the discussions in racial and postcolonial theories of Homi Bhabha and Mary Louse
Pratt and philosophically from the reflection on otherness in Enrique Dussel. Given the
description offered in the field, we analyze the religious situation in the quilombo from the
Durkheimian theory looking through the model of analysis of the totemic system to
understand the functioning of that society. To think of the urban, we use the concept of
periphery as potentiality in D'Andrea and Pentecostalism as a culture of the periphery in
relation to the option of the poor and black in Oliveira and the political significance of the
quilombola communities for the Black Movement as a greater expression of the black
resistance. The reflection on the religious situation in Quilombo Brotas brings a pertinent
questioning and challenge to the reality of racism and religious intolerance among the
quilombolas because of the bleaching (demonization) provided by the Pentecostals / Analisar a construção cultural da religião no Quilombo Brotas é o objetivo proposto por
Contextualizando o Quilombo Brotas historicamente consideramos as historiografias

Previous issue date: 2011-05-19 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work is a research concerning the phenomenon of pentecostalism and it targets to understand how the growth mecanisms of this religiosity works in the church Comunidade Cristã Pentecostal , known to the date as one of the biggest pentecostal churches in the city of Montes Claros, and one of the most highlightned in the north Minas region. The prominence of this work can be shown through the local social configuration derived from the pentecostal growth, but also, for being a inedited academic work in Montes Claros. As an explanatory hypothesis for the Church growth, we took the thesis developed by Rodney Stark, which enlightened the growth of a region as being dependent on that regions capacity to create and maintain social networks built on the basis of interpersonal links. In front of such hypothesis, we seek to relate the network theory to the context of the church Comunidade Cristã Pentecostal . Therefore, we have performed a fieldwork in which was made a collaborative observation process in the church attendances and other church works, and along with that, we have conducted interviews with the founder pastor of the church, and with participants of such, always relating the contents of this research work with the theory in question. As a result, we have managed to vouch that the growth of Comunidade Cristã Pentecostal is reported mostly to the ability of the church in create and manage the open social networks, nevertheless, it must be added to the capacity of the church to build communal bonds that serve as an environmental element to the spread of social networks / Este trabalho é uma pesquisa sobre o fenômeno do pentecostalismo e tem como objetivo entender como se dá o (os) mecanismo (os) de crescimento dessa religiosidade na Igreja Comunidade Cristã Pentecostal percebida até então como uma das maiores Igrejas pentecostais da cidade de Montes Claros e uma das que mais tem se destacado na região do norte de Minas.

Previous issue date: 2007-04-18 / This dissertation presents the results of a research conducted in the
Tijuco Preto neighborhood in the city of Vargem Grande Paulista, in
the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. The primary data source consists
of interviews with six women. All are converts from Catholicism to
Pentecostalism, and all are housekeepers with additional duties on
small local farms. They take care of these properties for the owners, that don´t live
there.
The work focuses on issues of religious transit in this small
community. It addresses the following questions: Why did these women
switch religions? What did they find in their new religion? What has
altered in these "converted" women's lives, as a result of this
religious transition? The number of Pentecostals churches built in
this suburban area illustrates the more general prominence of
religious transit. Tijuco Preto, for example, has Neo-pentecostal
churches such as Rebirth in Christ (Renascer em Cristo).
Findings indicate that these housekeepers motivations for transiting to
a new religion were, in general, health problems, i.e., theirs and
those of their children and husbands. The ailments concerned can be
physical or psychological. Other factors contributing to the change of
religion include their husbands' behavior and the perceived
characteristics of the Catholic Church, which, according to the
housekeepers, has its door always closed.
Problems related to the infrastructure of suburban neighborhoods
contributed to the isolation and suffering of these women. Tijuco
Preto is divided in the middle by Estrada de Caucaia and is
administrated by the cities of Cotia and Vargem Grande Paulista. This
administrative division exacerbates the difficulties of the local
population, especially in terms of medical assistance, transportation
and public school facilities.
From the perspective of these women who felt abandoned by the public
government and by the Catholic Church, conversion from Catholicism to
Pentecostalism ends their suffering. These women insist that
dedication to the new religion, with its concomitant more orderly life
(without the use of alcohol or tobacco) has transformed their lives:
they now feel happy and victorious.
With this life change of, the housekeepers have increased economic
access to properties such as their own house or land or a car. The
religion also helps them to confront without fear daily problems such
as unemployment, lack of transportation and scarcity of medical
assistance. The Pentecostal protection network fills gaps left by the
government / Esta dissertação apresenta resultado de pesquisa realizada no bairro do
Tijuco Preto, município de Vargem Grande Paulista, na Região Metropolitana de São
Paulo.
o isolamento e sofrimento dessas mulheres.

Previous issue date: 2009-09-24 / The present dissertation has as its aim analyse the political participation of the
church "Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus" (IURD) in Cáceres - Mato Grosso,
particularly in the election periods from 2002 to 2008. Despite the significance given by
various studies to IURD acting as an important phenomenon in the Brazilian religious
field, this analysis is developed from IURD´s role in using socio-religious practises for
the formation of followers into electors. The theoretic-methodologic course is attatched,
especially, with Weber and Pierre Bourdieu´s reflections, inspiring the analysis of free
interviews, documental soucers, participant observation, and memory, during work field
incursion, considering the followers as research subjetcs of the obtained data
consolidation. This relation between the followers and the church enables a
comprehension of how the transformation from follower to elector is given, in a
conjuncture joining the religious and political speeches in an environment that
concentrates various existing social conditions and in an activity organized by the
church regarding its candidates. Thus, joining, altogether, the theoretical presupposition,
the qualitative research based in bibliographies regarding the theme, newspapers,
magazines and publications. Searching, in a long-term process, how IURD used the
political speech as a symbolic element for the formation of "God´s politics". The religion,
soon started to be ranked as a tool for citizenship and moral formation, whose use
demanded the implementation of the church representatives candidature. In the context
of Cáceres and Mato Grosso, we looked to analyse how the iurdian hierarchy actions
were formed, the engerderment of institutional political-religious practises and individual
electoral profiles formation regarding the participation of IURD in the municipality
