Thinking on their feet : the role of knowledge in the work of personal training.

Watermeyer, Amanda Jane 08 January 2013 (has links)
Personal training is an occupation which requires service and knowledge work. There have been some studies of personal training that have focused on the service dimension of the work of personal trainers but few on the knowledge work entailed in workplace competence. This study focused on “knowledgeable labour” in the field of personal training. A small sample of apprenticed, trained and educated personal trainers was observed at work with their clients in order to investigate whether different learning pathways lead to differences in the forms of knowledge and ways of knowing they use in their workplace practices. A first level of analysis focused on whether there were noticeable differences in the “practical competence” of the trainers -as manifest in their observable practices with their clients. A second level of analysis, explored whether there were more subtle differences in their practices by focusing on the form and content of their exchanges with their clients, and of their reflections in and on their practice. This level of analysis focused on what the South African National Qualifications framework has referred to as “applied competence’ which is grounded in foundational and reflexive competence and is not reducible to what is manifestly or visible in practical activities. It sought to establish whether there were differences in the applied competence of trainers who have qualified through the different learning pathways. The study found that access to a formal knowledge base, and a related ability to reflect explicitly made a difference to the quality of the knowledge that trainers imparted to their clients, to their decision making in practice, and to the quality of explanations and justifications they offered to their clients. These differences point to the need for vocational qualifications that develop reflective practitioners who are able to build bridges work between the science and the client in their situated practices in their workplaces and therefore think on their feet.

The development of a personal training programme based on the principles of flow

Berzack, Anthony 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M Sport Sc (Sport Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / The motivation for this research evolved from a study of Flow in Sport (Jackson & Csikszentmihalyi, 1999). Flow is described as a state of optimal experience that could be attained by becoming immersed in a challenging task that absorbs all the attention on the task at hand. Physical exercise was used in this study because it provides a flow-conducive environment in which challenges can easily be gauged and increased, giving essential motivational feedback. A broad spectrum of sport psychology and flow-related research was applied in the design of a comprehensive and easily accessible system of understanding what it means to experience flow. Research that relates to the use of visualisation, relaxation and the use of natural triggers are key factors used in the implementation of the programme. The concept of flow was founded in seven fundamental elements that need to be present in order to experience flow. The programme was developed during several phases of sample testing over a period of two years to refine and condense the system so it would not detract attention from the task at hand. The final seven-week programme was presented to a sample of seven participants on a one-on-one basis. A combination of quantitative (measurements of performance levels in the chosen activity taken before and after the intervention programme intervention and qualitative (participants’ comments which were written down in terms of personal experiences related to the programme after completing the programme) methods were used to assess the effectiveness of the devised programme. Ground Evaluation Theory is described by Patton (1980) as the systematic working out of hypotheses and concepts during the course of research. This was a central feature of the nature of the development of the present programme. Patton (1980) describes a meta-evaluation as an evaluation of an evaluation. This was applied over the two-year period while refining and simplifying the present intervention so as to reduce potentially distracting analysis by participants. Using a standardised protocol, participants made use of personal past optimal experiences that epitomise each of the fundamental aspects of being in flow. These experiences (or blueprints) were then associated with natural triggers formed by seven segments of the human body to subconsciously refresh and enhance access to these past optimal states. A flow-chart on which these images were drawn was designed. It was used in conjunction with relaxation and visualisation to continually re-visit, refresh and apply these states of mind to reaching new peaks. Subjects were to visualise themselves immersed in performance of their task at the level set as the goal for the end of the programme. The past blueprinted states were used to recreate an optimal mental approach during this visualised performance. The goals were broken down into achievable challenging steps of progression with the use of personal training programmes designed by a sports scientist to be effective for attaining goals which were set. The flow-programme was evaluated in terms of setting training schedules, taking measurements and setting goals before intervention and then gauging the progress of these factors after the implementation of the programme. The factors measured were: the level of flow experienced in the chosen activity; satisfaction with life; adherence to the programme; and achievement of training goals. These variables were measured by comparing results in standardised tests which have proven reliable for measuring flow and satisfaction with life. Adherence to the programme was measured relative to the amount of training that had been specified in the programme designs. The attainment of goals was also measured by the percentage of goals that had been achieved, compared with those set by each participant for the programme. The results show that the subjects benefited from the programme on the four measures. The subjects also commented that they found the programme to be a highly effective tool for grasping an understanding of the concept of flow, as well as experiencing this elusive state. It was concluded that flow could be tapped into at a volitional level by using the devised intervention.

An Investigation of the Relationship between Education, Credentials and Knowledge of Personal Trainers and Client Retention

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was two-fold. In Specific Aim One, we examined the associations between education level, personal trainer credentials and characteristics, and knowledge of exercise science and personal training principles. In Specific Aim Two we examined associations between education, personal trainer credentials and knowledge of personal trainers with client retention. This study utilized a cross-sectional research design. An anonymous electronic survey was used to collect the data. Eligible participants (N=226) were individuals who were providing one-on-one personal training services for at least one client. All data were assessed for normality prior to data analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate sample characteristics. Mean and standard deviations, median and interquartile range [IQR] or frequency and percentages were reported for the sample characteristics. Bivariate associations were examined with dependent t-tests and one-way ANOVAs for normally distributed data. Mann- Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for non-normally distributed variables. The median knowledge score for the sample was 6.0 [3.00] points, out of a possible 24, with 92.5% of the sample scoring 10 or lower. Sex (Male/Female), education level, having a degree in the field, certification status (yes/no) and number of certifications were not associated with knowledge scores (p > 0.05). Years of experience in personal training was positively associated with mean knowledge scores (H(3) = 9.280, p = 0.026). Sex of the personal trainer, having a degree in the field (yes/no), the number of personal trainer certifications, the cost of training, the type of facility, the type of employment of the personal trainer and knowledge scores were not associated with client retention (p > 0.05). Education level (F3,87 = 8.176, p < 0.001), personal training certification (yes/no) (t38 = 2.277, p = 0.029), years of experience (F3, 87 = 3.169, p = 0.028), facility size (F4,84 = 8.049, p < 0.001), and exercise science degree type (F3,48 = 6.008, p = 0.001) were all associated with client retention. This study provides insight on knowledge retention of active personal trainers on subject matter deemed foundational by four certifying organizations. The findings should influence both the preparatory learning and well as continuing education approaches of both certifying organizations and institutions of higher learning. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Exercise and Wellness 2018

När träningen blir allt : En kvalitativ undersökning om personliga tränares syn på olika förhållningssätt till träning / When training becomes everything : A qualitative essay regarding personal trainers view on different approaches to training

Eriksson, William January 2019 (has links)
The screen bound generation in today’s society is suffering from obesity. More people are dying from obesity than starvation, despite this fact training and health is a massive focus in today’s society. A beautiful and fit body is a way to acquire prestige and status. The purpose of this study is to examine how personal trainers view of trainer´s different approaches to training in gym´s. This phenomenon has been researched by doing qualitative interviews with personal trainers. The results indicate that there is a problem and excessive training exists. The common man has little to no knowledge on how they are supposed to train. This leads to unhealthy approaches to training like for example overtraining syndrome and orthorexia. The main reason to unhealthy approaches to training was a lack of distance to training and a lack of knowledge. The shift from healthy to unhealthy is when it isn’t fun anymore, it is a must and something you haft to do. Training is something that becomes an identity and the central part of life. Training becomes everything.

Upplevelser av personlig träning : En studie om individers upplevelser av personlig träning / Experiences of personal training : A study about individuals´s experiences of personal training

Nilsson, Joel January 2017 (has links)
Background: Since the 1980s the number of sportclubs has reduced in Sweden and the group which are performing their physical activity in a gym or fitness center are growing. The numbers of gyms around the world have also increased greatly. In the meantime, a new professional group, that are focusing on individuals training and health in the gym´s and fitnesscenters, has been developed. One of these professions is personal trainer. Because this is a relatively new profession it is of interest to study this profession group closer. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine individual’s motives for hiring a personal trainer and their experiences of personal training. Method: In this survey six individuals where interviewed about their motives for hiring a personal trainer and their experiences of personal training. Results: The motives for hiring a personal trainer in this study was to get help with structures of training, make lifestyle changes as well as rehab and avoiding injuries. The respondent’s experiences of personal training were very positive and they perceived that they got both physical and psychological results that they didn’t feel they would be able to reach alone. The respondents experienced positive feelings in the personal training, that they were able to train more intensive and that it also made them able to make lifestyle changes. The results showed how important it was for the individuals that their needs for sense of autonomy, competence and relatedness from the self-determination theory got satisfied for them to perceive the process as positive. The results also showed which skills and characteristics where perceived as positive for a personal trainer. These where responsive, good ratiocination, informative, dedicated and constructive. Discussion: The survey showed that personal training can give very positive experiences when personal chemistry between the trainer and client is good and the clients get their needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness satisfied. This surveys also suggest that personal training can be a good method to train more intensive, make lifestyle changes and to get physical and psychological results from training. The survey showed how important the interpersonal skills are for a personal trainer and that this profession group can use the self-determination theory to get clients to thrive and keep them motivated.

Personlig träning som hälsofrämjande och vikten av kroppsligt kapital / Personal training to promote health and the importance of bodily capital

Olsson, Daniel January 2021 (has links)
Physical inactivity is a growing problem in society. The personal trainer profession may have an important role in the promotion of health. Personal trainers work mostly at commercial gyms with the goal of being profitable. There may therefore exist a conflict between personal trainers work to promote health and to sell their services. The purpose of this study was to explore personal trainers view of their profession in the context of health promotion, dietary advice and if and how they are affected by body ideals. Data was collected using semi structured interviews with personal trainers with varying education and professional experience at gyms in Malmö. A thematic analysis was implemented to identify key words that could later be categorized as themes. The results show that there exists a conflict between personal trainers work to promote health and to sell their services. Pressure to look a certain way was also prevalent among the personal trainers and a this was explained through the lens of bodily capital that describes how bodily attributes can ascribe the trainers with good properties like competence and social status.

Evaluation of the relation of project management use of methods and training in the project success through a contingencial prespective: a quantitative analysis.

Patah, Leandro Alves 22 April 2010 (has links)
Project management has been more studied and different approaches can be found in the literature generated by the researches and by practioners. This subject has been considered a strategic aspect for successful companies. That is the reason for, in the past years, lots of companies have been investing a huge amount of money in project management, feeding the controversial discussion about the results with the application of these methods in relation to the return of investments. This thesis has the objective to analyze the benefits generated by the use of these methods for the organizations. The methodological approach is based on a quantitative model in which the intention is to relate the implementation level of methods and training in project management to the success of the projects. The empirical research was conducted in a large multinational company, with diversified participation in the market, making business in many industrial sectors. Ten different business units took part in this study, from three countries and ten industrial sectors: components, energy, industry, maintenance, medicine, oil and gas, security, information technology, telecommunications and transportation. Although all the business units adopt the same package of corporate project management methods, they present different levels of implementation. The database was collected in a timeframe of two years and is composed by 1387 projects. The research results point out a positive influence in project success measured by the accomplishment of project time and cost, mainly because of the higher utilization level of the project management methods and the higher effort in project management training. In other direction, it was verified that the more complex the project, more difficult is to obtain the planned results. The use of methods has a statistical positive impact in the operational results of projects, measured through the fulfillment of projects budget and time, as the effort in project management training has a statistical positive impact in the operational results of them. Additionally the project complexity has a positive impact in the operational results of it.

Mastrascusa, Celso Luiz January 2012 (has links)
Listening to Verbal and Non-Verbal classroom is the theme of this thesis. It is a way of rethinking our education which is still too directed to the transmission of specific content, organized in time and supported by a hard work of the teacher. Many times the teacher does not a professional training that supports besides the specific knowledge, the personal formation that will provide some emotional security on its pedagogical function. This thesis is purposeful and intends to contribute in the school environment, particularly in the first year of primary school, through the game, playing, and by the qualification Adult listening (teacher). We present an educational and pedagogical method which is the Psychomotricity Relational with the psychoanalystic view. The study proposed was developed in a qualitative approach because the goal is not enumerate or measure the events studied, but get descriptive data about people, places and interactive processes by the direct contact with the researcher and the situation studied, trying to understand the phenomena from the perspective of subjects. The central focus of this study is: Understand how the listen of the Verbal and Nonverbal classroom happens in the classroom: the body language and its expressions. In the first block - the first year of our lives, I present and characterize a first year class of an elementary school in a private school in Porto Alegre, through the eyes of the teachers and educational guider, as well as through observations made by the researcher in the classroom. The narratives of the interviews were examined from the perspective of discourse analysis, based on psychoanalytic view, in order to compose a vision of how the lessons are planned and how the importance of Verbal and Nonverbal appears in learning relationships. In the second block - Relational Psychomotricity: the pleasure of the free and spontaneous game - overflow of aggression, I present the relationship between theory and empirical material collected during the year 2011, analyzing the demand of children in Relational Psychomatricity sessions, making the interlacing of concepts and highlighting what seemed to be essential in understanding the focus of our thesis. In the third and last block - The Excola: the eternal fight between play and learn. I present considerations about the importance of teachers personal training, the provision of a possibility of building a way to live and work in education. The puzzles in the classroom will be always present, both with teachers, and with children. But we must have the courage to make the differences, daring in a transformation of our role, our position within schools, in search of a Excola.
