The influence of presenteeism on job satisfaction and organisational commitment among government employees within the Cacadu district

Tala, Ratsela Johannes 05 1900 (has links)
M. Tech. (Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Management Sciences), Vaal University of Technology. / The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of presenteeism on job satisfaction and organisational commitment among government employees within the Cacadu district. Research on presenteeism has been conducted and the majority of research on presenteeism has predominantly focused on its prevalence, determinants and economic effects, in the process neglecting important attitudinal results. Sickness presenteeism may signify physical presence and mental absence and can be associated with affective-motivational states such as job satisfaction and organisational commitment. The research methodology used to conduct the study is a combination of a literature review and an empirical study. A quantitative research paradigm and a descriptive research method were used to investigate a sample size of 220 employees within government departments in the Cacadu district. In order to minimise the study bias, simple random sampling was used to ensure that the sample accurately reflects the larger population (N=1025). Data were collected by means of a structured questionnaire. The instrument was piloted with 40 respondents and the instrument was hand delivered to all the participants. The results of the correlation analysis indicated that there is a moderate relationship between presenteeism and job satisfaction and a moderate relationship between presenteeism and organisational commitment. Regression analysis showed mixed results among presenteeism, job satisfaction and organisational commitment. Findings and recommendations of this study are significant to employees as they provide essential information regarding the influence and impact of presenteeism within the working environment and how these affect the performance of employees in delivering quality service within the Cacadu district. Given that there is presently little available research on the attitudinal consequences of sickness presenteeism and also non-work related presenteeism, these findings offer further opportunity for conducting research in the area.

Sjuknärvaro vid hemarbete : En kvalitativ studie om arbetstagares upplevelse av sjuknärvaro vid hemarbete / Sickness presenteeism while working from home

Bergman, Sandra, Olofsson, Elin January 2022 (has links)
With the restrictions imposed by Covid-19-pandemic, work from home (WFH) became a new method of working for many employees in Sweden. The research we have found describes that sickness absence in organizations is decreasing, but the prevalence of sickness presenteeism is still unknown, which created the interest for our study. Research on sickness presenteeism focuses on the traditional physical workplace and not WFH, which is now an established method in Sweden as a result of the Covid-19-pandemic. This study aims to understand how workers experience sickness presenteeism when working from home and how the perceived quality of work affects the decision to choose such presenteeism. A survey was sent out to all workers in an organization in the private sector, which provides both products and services and eight respondents were interviewed in semi-structured interviews. All the interviews were then thematized and analyzed, leading to the results of this study. The results show that sickness presenteeism in WFH occurs to a high degree, and is perceived by workers as common due to the accessibility of the working method. The choice to work with sickness presenteeism is made especially when employees experience high workload, loyalty to colleagues and employers and from economic aspects. Employees feel that sickness presenteeism has a negative effect on efficiency as they do not work at the same pace, and need to take more breaks to cope with working from home while sick. By working on quality of work and meeting employees' needs to experience good quality of work, the authors of this study argue that sickness presenteeism can be prevented.

Pracovní absence / Absence from work

Zahradníková, Michaela January 2011 (has links)
This thesis focuses on employees' incapacity to work as a factor that negatively affects the functioning of an organization. The resulting negative financial impact is felt not only at the level of specific organizations, but also can affect a country's macroeconomic performance. To be able to understand the issue of work absence, it is necessary to consider it in the context of a state's political and social situation. It is also essential to take into account legislative regulations regarding absenteeism that dictate the procedures required for both employees and employers. A serious problem associated with sick leave is the unauthorized absence of employees from work that results in significant burden on employers as well as hinders the macroeconomic functioning of the state. Although there are public institutions involved in activities for reducing absenteeism, the task of investigating the reasons for increased work absence is usually left up to the employer. That includes a responsibility to find and incorporate into the organization's policy an effective and appropriate solution for reducing work absence and stabilization of amount of absence. It is also important to avoid creating an environment that leads to so called "presenteeism," which is the presence of employees in the workplace...

Analýza pracovní neschopnosti a prezentismu v České republice / Analysis of Incapacity for Work Due to Disease or Injury and Presenteeism in the Czech Republic

Krutská, Jana January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to provide the readers with as comprehensive view of the issue of sickness and accident rate of workers in relation to work attendance as possible. The dissertation deals with both absenteeism of sick individuals, i.e. the incapacity for work, and presenteeism, that is the performance of gainful employment despite acutely impaired health condition. Due to the different nature and level of knowledge of the examined phenomena, each of them is devoted a different level of attention. The issue of the incapacity for work due to disease or injury is analyzed in more detail. Development of the parametric values is set in the context of administration and legal changes, which have occurred in the Czech Republic since the early 1990s, and conditionality of the occurrence of the incapacity for work due to disease or injury are further investigated based on individual anonymized data. In the part dealing with presenteeism, the dissertation introduces the readers to the basic findings that have been published so far about this type of addressing health incapacitation. Attention is also paid to the mutual comparison of the incapacity for work and presenteeism, both on the basis of theoretical and empirical knowledge. In conclusion of the dissertation, the level of absence and...

Work Limitations and Productivity Loss Are Associated with Health-Related Quality of Life but Not with Clinical Severity in Patients with Psoriasis

Schmitt, Jochen M., Ford, Daniel E. 28 February 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Background: According to current guidelines the cost of productivity loss should be considered in pharmacoeconomic analyses. The cost of health-related productivity loss in psoriasis patients is unknown. Objective: To estimate the cost of productivity loss in psoriasis and its association with health-related quality of life and clinical disease severity. Methods: Cross-sectional study, recruitment of adult participants through Internet advertisements. 201 (72.3%) out of 278 eligible participants completed the study. Health-related work productivity loss, quality of life and clinical severity of psoriasis were assessed by standardized instruments. Results: Indirect costs of productivity loss clearly exceed the total direct cost. In contrast to objective clinical disease severity, health-related quality of life (measured by the Dermatology Life Quality Index) is an independent predictor of work productivity. Conclusions: There is good reason to believe that intervention can reduce health-related productivity loss by improving patients’ quality of life. Savings from increased work productivity might offset comparatively high acquisition costs of biological agents. No. of bitstreams: 1 Elisabete Felix Farias.pdf: 1826027 bytes, checksum: a1fd55d13a48fcca2a341814932d233d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-06 / The illness and its relation to the lack of attendance or presence at work has been the focus of several studies, representing a reality that generates high costs for both public and private institutions, and especially for the worker. The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation between quality of life in the work of managers of a federal judicial institution, presenteeism and Burnout Syndrome, work - related disorder related to absenteeism, early retirements and low productivity. This is a descriptive-exploratory case study, cross-sectional, under a quantitative evaluation, adopting multivariate statistics for data analysis. The following instruments were used: a questionnaire containing data on the sociodemographic profile and the professional profile; The QVP-35 questionnaire, to evaluate the quality of life at work; The MBI-GS inventory, to determine the occurrence of Burnout Syndrome; The SPS-6 scale, for the analysis of presenteeism. The data presented by 47 department managers of a Federal Judicial Institution, based in the city of São Paulo, were analyzed by means of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), seeking to correlate the component dimensions of each of the questionnaires applied. It was observed that, in relation to the sociodemographic and professional profiles of the respondents, the relevant variable in relation to the presence or absence of Burnout Syndrome was schooling. Similarly, of the analyzed dimensions of QVP-35 versus Burnout Syndrome, the main associations were found with the variable "Work Related Discomfort". Among the significant correlations obtained between Burnout Syndrome and presenteeism, Emotional Exhaustion was evidenced as a preponderant element. The contributions of the research allowed providing important subsidies for the Administration of the Court, aiming at facing the problems identified and the formulation of quality of life policies at work with a preventive bias of health problems in the institutional scope. From the academic point of view, the research made it possible to advance in the consolidation of the approach to quality of life at work, presenteeism and Burnout Syndrome and to establish indications for new studies.

Wellness Education and Job-Related Injuries and Illnesses for Federal Employees

Scott, Eunice 01 January 2017 (has links)
Work-related injuries and illnesses may lead to absenteeism, which affects the level of productivity. The purpose of this study was to determine the success of an employee workplace training program on work-related injury and illness rates at selected federal districts within a federal organization. Newman's model, which describes internal and external factors that may have an effect on an individual's health, was the framework that guided this project. A pre-post design was used to compare data from 2 publically available data sets, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Illness and Injury and the Voice of the Employee Survey, for the years 2013 and 2014, before and after a wellness training program. According to a descriptive analysis of 91 illness and injury events that occurred during the 2-year period, the greatest number of employees who reported illnesses were mail handlers and mail processing clerks. Slips/trips and falls, strikes by machine/equipment or other objects, and repetitive motion were the top 3 types of injuries. After training, the total number of illness and injury days away from work and days of limited duty were decreased, indicating a positive impact of this workplace wellness program and a need for future training for these workers. This project has the potential to affect social change by supporting the benefits of workplace wellness in improving employee health and reducing workplace injuries at federal agencies.
