Austen and Woolf Revisited: Muddy Petticoats, Sally's Kiss, and the Neoliberal NowSchaefer, Sarah Elizabeth 29 June 2015 (has links)
This project examines the implications of mythologizing women writers, specifically Woolf and Austen, and transforming them into their own famous characters. Using various writings that theorize women's voices, sense of agency, and political autonomy in relationship with the public/private dichotomy, this project argues that women writers are often appropriated and fictionalized in this way because of a patriarchal cultural understanding that women are associated with the private, personal, and domestic spheres. More importantly, it argues that this increasingly frequent treatment aligns with and forwards a neoliberal political and cultural agenda. The politics of the last twenty or thirty years, in short, are shaping interpretations and adaptations of major works of the English canon, specifically Mrs. Dalloway and Pride and Prejudice. Particular examples of such adaptations include The Hours, Vanessa and Her Sister, Becoming Jane, and Longbourn. This project ultimately analyzes these and a select number of other texts in order to show that these contemporary treatments of two of the most famous female writers from the English canon reveal quite a bit about current attitudes within the United States about gender (in)equality, care work/dependency, and sexuality. / Master of Arts

Stockholm Prides kriskommunikation 2011 – en retorisk analys av försvarsstrategier / The Crisis Communication of Stockholm Pride 2011 – a rhetorical analysis of response strategiesMöller, Marie January 2012 (has links)
(Enligt årsbokslutet gick man back med 3,9 miljoner kronor.) Frågan hur man försöker återvinna förtroendet blir intressant. Hur kommunicerar Stockholm Pride?

Perceived Work-related Factors and Turnover Intention : A Case Study of a South Korean Construction CompanyYang, Jinseok, Wittenberg, Philip January 2016 (has links)
Purpose – Employee turnover entails considerable costs and is a major problem for the construction industry. By creating an extensive framework, this study aims to examine whether perceived work-related factors affect turnover intention in South Korean construction companies. Research design – The paper is based on the results of a questionnaire of 136 employees that was conducted and provided by a Korean construction company. Research hypotheses were tested via correlation analyses. The most influencing work-related factors, as well as differences among job levels, were determined by multiple regression analyses. Findings – Communication, immediate leaders, organizational commitment, and organizational pride substantially affect turnover intentions. All of these factors can be considered as relational factors. The most influencing factors differ among job levels. Discussion/practical implications – Immediate leaders should be aware of their role in retaining employees and enhance communication, organizational commitment and pride. This study shows how the importance of certain variables differs for groups of employees. Theoretical implications/limitations– This study is based on a sample of employees from a Korean construction company. Therefore, the generalizability of the findings has to be tested. Future research should test the proposed framework with other factors or resources. Originality/value – This study shed light on the turnover subject in the South Korean construction industry. It shows that different factors can influence turnover intention among job levels. A framework was created, which is based on 16 work-related factors including organizational factors, HRM practices and job attitudes.

The floating city : carnival, Cape Town and the queering of spaceVan der Wal, Ernst 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (VA)(Visual Arts))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / In this thesis I examine the phenomenon of carnival for its corporeal and spatial expressions
of fluid identity formations. The visual constitution of multiple gay/queer identities during
carnival is commonly regarded as transgressive of the normative order that is ideologically
and physically imbedded in the structure of city. I suggest, however, that the various local
performances of homosexuality that are mobilised during the Cape Town Pride Parade can
be interpreted as simultaneous reinforcements and contestations of sexual stereotypes. By
tracing discursive and spatial shifts that have occurred within the South African sexual
landscape, I demonstrate how this carnival both transgresses and bolsters heteronormativity.
In addition, I explore how race and gender play decisive roles in the constitution of a
homonormative gay identity, and investigate how these male, white homonormative
assumptions are challenged by a minority of black and lesbian participants. In the process
of deconstruction, I also reveal how the interaction between spectator and carnival
participant blurs binary constructs of stasis/mobility, subject/object, private/public, and
'normal'/'abnormal'.

The purpose of this qualitative study has been; how social bonds are interlaced between thesocial worlds contained within the analytical division of “outside Internet” and “withinInternet”. What happens with the social bond as the individual oscillate between this analyticbisection? This purpose raises important questions of the use of Internet in everyday life.

A new stance is taken toward studying the Internets integration into everyday life. The focusis adjusted to the importance of emotions. Emotions of pride and shame will be treated as thesignals of social bonds state and will indicate the resistance or openness of this integration.Goffmans theory on face-work will be used as a complement. A cognitive approach on socialbonds will assist the emotional approach. This is interwoven with a perspective forunderstanding Internet as a medium in form rather than only to focus on the “content”.

The conclusion consists of a required consistency between the quality of the social bond onthe Internet and outside the Internet. The fear of inconsistency had to do with a threat of lossof face, not to come in conflict with established norms from outside the Internet.Development of close and intimate social bonds on the Internet that didn’t have a counterpartor was in inconsistency with the social bond outside Internet, lead to shame that threatenedthe social bond. The integration of Internet in everyday life is therefore not accomplished.Still, a new generation with instant access to the Internet is to be primary socialized undernew conditions.

Storming the Castle: Non-Secular Subversion of the Pas D'Armes in The Castle of PerseveranceMoss, John 09 May 2008 (has links)
It is important to remember that the categories of medieval performance were established far removed from their period in history. As a genre, the morality play includes a wide diversity of time, geography, content and performance styles. Such disparities have made it difficult to develop a comprehensive definition, without which comparisons between works cannot be consistent. As scholarship continues to explore these works in context of their performance, it becomes increasingly important to identify which performance styles best inform their production. In examining The Castle of Perseverance within the parameters of pas d’armes, new meanings can be drawn from its text. Instead of simply incorporating the conventions of tournament staging, the play exposes the faults of the secular societies they were intended to promote. Currently it is impossible to determine definitely that The Castle of Perseverance was intended to be a subversion of the pas d’armes. There is no identified author or even record of a single performance in medieval times. Yet the circumstantial evidence within the text supports the theory of subversion. Further research is still needed on the performance of The Castle of Perseverance within the appropriate historical context in order to better understand its place within the larger canon of medieval drama.

Concepções de sexualidade e direitos humanos: uma análise psicopolítica a partir das paradas do orgulho LGBT de São Paulo e Campinas / Conceptions of sexuality and human rights: a psicopolitical analysis from the LGBT pride parades in São Paulo and Campinas.Ortolano, Fábio 16 December 2014 (has links)
The thesis presented here brings a psicopolitical analysis over the conceptions of sexuality and human rights from the LGBT Pride Parades in São Paulo and Campinas, in a epistemological perspective on the production of senses and meanings in the daily life. Initially, we present our theoretical research, the conceptions of sexuality and human rights, based on the work of references in this field; thereafter, we describe our methodology, which is based on a survey and in the analysis of the discourse as technical-theoretical method in which is possible to assess relevant data. Thus, we present our respondents profiles and we define our research field, showing how political psychology is, for us, a way of interdisciplinary studies. Finally, we show the discussion between the theory firstly presented and the data collected through the survey and our respondents discourses collected through the open questions, concluding the psicopolitical analysis of the results and the current political scenario over LGBTs DDHH in Brazil, which implies an understanding of the positions of political subjects participating in this collective action and offers us possibilities for public policy and education for human rights.

The meaning and importance of service for health professionalsRaleigh, Susan Unknown Date (has links)
The primary purpose of this study was to explore and identify the meaning and importance of service for health professionals. Those who participated in this study are all registered nurses who each have between 10 and 40 years of clinical nursing and nurse lecturing experience. The participants each wrote two stories, one about the meaning of service and the other about the importance of service. Definitions of service generally suggest organised labour involving an act of help or assistance. Our intent was to understand what constituted service for each of us in the healthcare - and specifically the nursing practice/education - context.A secondary purpose of this qualitative research was guided by participatory and critical theory paradigms. Seven participants and I (as the initiating researcher) formed a co-operative inquiry group to undertake the research using a collaborative process. Within this method the leader and the group became co-participants and co-researchers. Nurses and women are identified as marginalised people and by honouring the principles of co-operative inquiry we were empowered through this process. While the initial data was analysed thematically by the lead researcher, the original 19 sub-themes were refined by participants into five themes. The findings of the participants are consistent with overseas studies on emotional labour and sentimental work. The five themes that emerged as the meaning of service are helping, giving, elements of service, acts of doing, and pride in work. Helping was defined as an attitude and an action, which often results in a spiritual connection. Giving involves stretching yourself, and altruistic behaviour that also incorporated a spiritual component. Five sub-themes merged to form the third theme elements of service; working with people, being a public servant, being a servant, need and duty. The complexity and hidden aspect of service work was expressed in acts of doing where being professional was paramount. The final theme, pride in work, acknowledged childhood conditioning and a sense of contributing to the greater good through our unique work as nurses. This study affirmed that service has much importance to those involved and deepened our understanding of the blend of meanings service expresses.
