“Vittangi räddar världen” : Fem aktörers perspektiv på rättvisekonflikter och kritiska råvaror / ”Vittangi saves the world” : Five actors´ perspectives on justice conflicts and critical raw materials

Denna studie syftar till att belysa samhällsaktörers perspektiv kring gruvbrytning av kritiska råvaror i led med klimatomställningen. Studien undersöker hur samhällsaktörer belyser effekterna av en eventuell kommande gruvetablering i byn Vittangi i norra Sverige. Genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med fem samhällsaktörer, i kombination med en tematisk analys, har olika rättvisekonflikter undersökts för att skapa en insikt och ge ett nyanserat kritiskt perspektiv. Analysen av resultatet har utgått från teorin av miljörättvisa och påvisar flertalet målkonflikter som uppstått i samband med den potentiella gruvetableringen i Vittangi. Slutsatserna tydliggör intressekonflikter och baseras på hur det påverkar aktörerna, vilket synliggör perspektiven på gruvbrytning av kritiska råvaror som ett led av klimatomställningen. / This study aims to shed light on the perspectives of social actors regarding the mining of critical raw materials in connection with climate change. The study examines how social actors highlight the effects of a possible future mine establishment in the village of Vittangi in northern Sweden. Through semi-structured interviews with five social actors, in combination with a thematic analysis, various justice conflicts have been investigated to create insight and to provide a nuanced critical perspective. The analysis of the result has been based on the theory of environmental justice and demonstrates the majority of goal conflicts that arose in connection with the potential mine establishment in Vittangi. The conclusions clarify conflicts of interest and are based on how they affect the actors, which makes the perspectives visible on the mining of critical raw materials as part of the climate transition.

Влияние химического состава на горячую прочность и восстановимость железорудного сырья в доменной плавке : магистерская диссертация / The effect of chemical composition on the hot strength and reducibility of iron ore raw materials in blast furnace smelting

Любое железорудное сырье представляет собой минеральную композицию железосодержащих фаз, состав, микроструктура и физико-механические свойства которой зависят от химического и фазового состава исходной шихты. Повышение качественных характеристик железорудных материалов является одним из наиболее эффективных способов улучшения технико-экономических показателей доменного процесса. Качество готовой продукции зависит от целого ряда технологических параметров, одним из которых является горячая прочность железорудного сырья. Сырье должно обладать высокой горячей прочностью и выдерживать без разрушения ряд фазовых превращений при восстановлении в доменной печи вплоть до отделения шлака от металла. Помимо этого, сырье должно обладать хорошей восстановимостью, то есть способностью легко отдавать кислород, связанный в оксиды газообразному восстановителю. Химический состав железорудного сырья оказывает существенное влияние на его восстановимость и горячую прочность. Поэтому управление химическим составом позволит подобрать оптимальный состав сырья для наилучших показателей плавки. Исследования горячей прочности сырья важны для существующего доменного процесса, так как образование мелочи во время восстановления негативно сказывается на газопроницаемости столба шихтовых материалов; более высокая восстановимость способствует сокращению времени пребывания железорудного сырья в доменной печи и росту доли косвенного восстановления окислов железа, что приведёт к снижению удельного расхода кокса; исследования в области восстановимости железорудного сырья способствуют развитию новых технологий и инноваций в металлургической отрасли, может привести к разработке новых методов восстановления и использования рудного сырья. / Any iron ore raw material is a mineral composition of iron-containing phases, the composition, microstructure and physico-mechanical properties of which depend on the chemical and phase composition of the initial charge. Improving the quality characteristics of iron ore materials is one of the most effective ways to improve the technical and economic performance of the blast furnace process. The quality of the finished product depends on a number of technological parameters, one of which is the hot strength of iron ore raw materials. The raw material must have high hot strength and withstand without destruction a number of phase transformations during reduction in a blast furnace up to the separation of slag from metal. In addition, the raw material must have good reducibility, that is, the ability to easily transfer oxygen bound into oxides to a gaseous reducing agent. The chemical composition of iron ore raw materials has a significant effect on its reducibility and hot strength. Therefore, chemical composition management will allow you to select the optimal composition of raw materials for the best melting performance. Studies of the hot strength of raw materials are important for the existing blast furnace process, since the formation of fines during recovery negatively affects the gas permeability of the column of charge materials; higher recoverability reduces the residence time of iron ore raw materials in the blast furnace and an increase in the proportion of indirect reduction of iron oxides, which will lead to a decrease in the specific consumption of coke; research in the field of recoverability of iron ore raw materials contributes to the development of new technologies and innovations in the metallurgical industry may lead to the development of new methods for the recovery and use of ore raw materials.

Politique industrielle et autonomie stratégique européennes : le cas des chaînes d’approvisionnement en matériaux critiques

À en croire la récente floraison de travaux et d’articles à ce sujet, la politique industrielle fait son grand retour dans les économies développées depuis une dizaine d’années. Mais cette fois-ci, contrairement à d’autres occurrences historiques de ce phénomène, les politiques industrielles mobilisées semblent sous-tendues par des considérations géopolitiques. Plus que la performance économique et la compétitivité, l’objectif de sécurité nationale apparaît de façon croissante comme motivation des mesures économiques. Dans le contexte européen, cette nouvelle approche s’incarne dans le concept d’autonomie stratégique ouverte, qui tente de réconcilier deux visions : d’une part, la reconnaissance d’un ordre mondial changeant et plus menaçant qu’avant ; d’autre part, un attachement historique de l’Europe à l’ouverture des marchés. Une des questions qui demeurent en suspens est celle de la concrétisation de ce concept dans des mesures politiques à l’échelle européenne. Le présent mémoire vise à contribuer à la réflexion sur ce point, en analysant le cas de la législation naissante sur les chaînes d’approvisionnement en matériaux critiques. Le cadre d’analyse de l’institutionnalisme discursif permet de comparer les discours sur l’autonomie stratégique et sur les matériaux critiques. Il met en lumière des complémentarités et résonances, mais également des incohérences : les cadrages, les récits et types d’arguments utilisés pour justifier les deux discours ne sont en effet pas les mêmes. / A recent spate of works and articles has identified a return of industrial policy in developed economies over the past decade. This evolution seems to be underpinned by geopolitical considerations, as national security is increasingly stated as a motivation for economic measures – more so than welfare and competitiveness. In a European context, this new approach is embodied by the concept of open strategic autonomy, which may be seen as an attempt to reconcile two visions: on the one hand, the recognition of a changing world order that is more threatening than before; on the other, Europe's historical attachment to open markets. One of the questions that remain unanswered is how this concept is translated into policy measures. This thesis aims to help answer this question by analyzing the case of emerging legislation on critical raw materials supply chains. By using the analytical framework of discursive institutionalism, this work compares discourses on strategic autonomy and critical materials. It highlights the similarities and echoes, but also inconsistencies of these two sets of ideas, as the framings, narratives and types of arguments used to justify the two discourses vary.

Qualidade da madeira de espécies do gênero Acacia plantadas no Brasil / Wood quality of species of the genus Acacia planted in Brazil

O gênero Acacia apresenta espécies florestais de rápido crescimento, com rotações curtas (7 a 9 anos) e de grande interesse comercial para produção de polpa celulósica, painéis de madeira e energia. No Brasil a utilização de espécies do gênero Acacia na produção de celulose de fibra curta ainda é bastante restrita e são poucos os estudos que demonstram a potencialidade do uso dessa matéria-prima para a obtenção de polpa celulósica com as propriedades alcançadas pelas espécies do gênero Eucalyptus. Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar o potencial de algumas espécies do gênero Acacia (A.aulacocarpa, A. auriculiformis, A. crassicarpa, A. mangium) plantados no Brasil, para a produção de polpa celulósica Kraft, considerando os aspectos relacionados à qualidade da madeira e da polpa, o consumo de reagentes químicos na polpação e também os aspectos relacionados ao rendimento e a capacidade de produção de polpa celulósica; adicionalmente buscou-se fornecer informações estratégicas para o setor celulósico nacional com relação as possíveis ameaças e as oportunidades apresentadas pelos materiais não utilizados no Brasil. Para realização deste trabalho foram utilizados 11 materiais genéticos distintos e cada um dos materiais genéticos foi considerado um tratamento e todos com 5 anos de idade. As características avaliadas foram: densidade básica, dimensões das fibras, composição química e parâmetros da polpação kraft (rendimento bruto, rendimento depurado, teor de rejeitos, número kappa e relações). Para este último objetivo, as madeiras de cada uma das espécies foram submetidas ao processo de polpação kraft, considerando-se seis níveis de álcali ativo: 18,0; 19,5; 21,0; 22,5; 24,0 e 25,5%, mantendo-se constantes as outras variáveis de cozimento. Observou-se que o modelo de variação longitudinal para densidade básica da árvore mantém uma tendência dos valores serem mais elevados na base e valores mínimos entre 25 e 50% da altura comercial. Quanto à composição química os valores foram distintos para todas as espécies e apresentaram uma variação de 60,99% para A. auriculiformis (1) e 68,79% para A. aulacocarpa (1) como valores mínimo e máximo. Os resultados obtidos quanto às dimensões das fibras não apresentaram padrões definidos de variação entre as espécies. Notou-se quanto aos parâmetros da polpação um efeito diferenciado entre as espécies de Acacia para as distintas cargas de álcali ativo. Considerando a curva de polpação para obtenção de número kappa 18 entre as espécies estudadas, obteve-se como média para a demanda carga de alcalina 23,8% e a média do rendimento depurado nestas condições foi 54,72%. A espécie A. crassicarpa procedência (1) destacou-se por apresentar a maior conversão em massa (ton/ha) de madeira na produção de celulose e a A. mangium procedências (1, 2, 3 e principalmente 4) alcançaram os melhores resultados de rendimento frente ao processo kraft de polpação comparando toas as espécies deste estudo. / The genus Acacia includes fast-growing short-rotation (7 to 9 years) forest tree species of commercial interest to produce pulp, wood panels, and energy. In Brazil, the utilization of species of the genus Acacia to produce short fiber pulp is still highly restricted and few studies are available that demonstrate the potential use of this raw material to obtain pulp presenting the properties displayed by species of the genus Eucalyptus. This study aimed at analyzing the potential of some species of the genus Acacia (A. aulacocarpa, A. auriculiformis, A. crassicarpa, A. mangium) planted in Brazil to produce kraft pulp, considering the aspects related to wood and pulp quality, consumption of chemical reagents during the pulping process, yield, and cellulose pulp production capacity. Furthermore, this work searched for strategical information for the national pulp and paper sector as to possible threats and opportunities presented by materials not used in Brazil in order to provide knowledge and discuss the potential competitiveness of these types of wood in the world market for pulp and paper. To accomplish these goals, we used 11 5-year-old distinct genetic materials, each one of them considered a different treatment. The following traits were evaluated: basic density, longitudinal variation, fiber dimensions, chemical composition, and kraft pulping process parameters (total yield, screened yield, rejects content, kappa number and relations). To carry out these evaluations, each wood species underwent the kraft pulping process considering six levels of active alkalis: 18.0, 19.5, 21.0, 22.5, 24.0, and 25.5%, keeping all other cooking variables constant. We observed that the model of longitudinal variation in the basic density maintains the trend of reaching higher values in the base of the tree and minimum values between 25% and 50% of the commercial height. The values found for the chemical composition were different for all the species studied and the holocellulose content ranged from a minimum of 60.99% found for A. auriculiformis (1) to a maximum of 68.79% found for A. aulacocarpa (1). The results obtained for fiber dimensions did not present defined patterns of variation among the species. The kraft pulping process parameters showed differences among Acacia species for the distinct levels of active alkalis. Considering the pulping process curve to get the kappa number of 18 among the species studied, the average alkali demand was 23.8% and the average depurated yield under these conditions was 54.72%. A. crassicarpa procedure 1 presented the highest conversion into wood mass (t/ha) to produce cellulose and A. mangium procedures (1, 2, 3, and mainly 4) reached the best results in terms of yield when they underwent the kraft pulping process compared to all the species studied herein.

Préhistoire de la Moyenne-Côte-Nord : le chert de la Minganie et l’utilisation des ressources lithiques

Ce mémoire traite de l’utilisation des matières premières lithiques telle que représentée sur les sites préhistoriques de la Moyenne-Côte-Nord du Golfe du Saint-Laurent, au Québec. Cette étude régionale se base sur la réanalyse d’un nombre important de collections archéologiques et accorde une grande importance à l’identification et à la description des matières premières utilisées. Un matériau d’origine locale, le Chert de la Minganie, y occupe une place particulière. L’importance de ce matériau pour la préhistoire régionale était jusqu’ici virtuellement inconnue. Suite à nos analyses, un inventaire complet des matières premières utilisées est mis sur pied. Ces données mettent en évidence un certain nombre de comportements. Principalement, nous identifions deux ensembles qui illustrent la présence de territoires attribuables à la répartition de groupes amérindiens subrégionaux (bandes). Finalement, à travers l’utilisation des ressources lithiques, les liens qui rattachent les groupes de notre région d’étude à ceux de la péninsule du Québec-Labrador sont illustrés. / This thesis deals with lithic raw material use as evidenced on prehistoric sites from the middle North Shore of the Saint Lawrence River, Quebec. This regional study is based on the reanalysis of a large number of archaeological collections and places central importance on the identification and description of the varieties of lithics that were used. A specific material of local origin, Mingan chert, occupies a special place in this study. The importance of this material for regional prehistory has remained, until now, poorly understood. As a result of our analyses, a full inventory of the lithic varieties used on these sites is presented and permits us to illustrate certain prehistoric behaviours. Principally, we identify two sets of sites which correspond to the presence of subregional aboriginal groups (bands). Finally, raw material use demonstrates social and exchange ties that link the groups of our study area to those of the broader region of the Quebec-Labrador peninsula.

However, we verified that in the human sciences, specifically at the Geography, in the last epochs has been given little attention to the production, mainly to industrialization. In this study, we realized a analysis about the industry`s importance at the Southwest of the Parana`s development, region of new population occupation, happened mainly after the 1940`s. By the realization of that study, proceeded to light from the historic materialism, method which to consist, thick manner, in to analyses the formations and transformations occurred at the society from active production and from work`s connections intrinsic to its. The theoretical reference Marxism mainly the Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin, Karl Kautsky, Ignácio Rangel, Armem Mamigonian`s studies, among others abetted us to that realized a detailed research, interviewing owns and executives of industrial unities from region, salaried workers etc, looking at to get information and dies about the thematic studied. In this discourse, we analyzed: 1) the importance of the industry (mainly the wood`s branch) to the population of this region from Parana; 2) we verified the conditions that the social formation (marked by presence of few owns of earth, craftsmen and merchants) offered to organize a few merchant production; 3) we saw the importance that had the financial capital, as modernizing the agricultural as financing the industrial production (mainly from the second half at 1970`s); 4) we saw the importance that the abetment politics to industrialization, the offer of raw materials, and of work`s power, have been to attract industrial unities to this region; and, 5) we verified the increase of income advanced by industry, that besides, has been contributed, somehow, to a geral advancement of the life`s conditions from Southwest of the Parana`s population. / Como escreveram Marx e Engels (1998), a produção é de suma importância ao homem, mais do que isso, ela é responsável pela própria humanização; à medida que os homens, ao contrário dos animais que vivem à mercê da natureza (da oferta de alimentos, resistindo às intempéries climáticas etc.), conseguem produzir os meios de sobrevivência dos quais necessitam (alimentos, vestuário, residências etc.). No entanto, verificamos que nas ciências humanas, especificamente na Geografia, nos últimos tempos tem-se dado pouca atenção à produção, principalmente à industrialização. Nessa pesquisa, realizamos uma análise da importância da indústria no desenvolvimento do Sudoeste do Paraná, região de ocupação populacional recente, ocorrida principalmente após a década de 1940. Para a realização de tal estudo, procedemos à luz do materialismo histórico, método que consiste, grosso modo, em analisar as formações e transformações ocorridas na sociedade a partir da organização produtiva e das relações de trabalho inerentes a ela. O referencial teórico marxista principalmente estudos de Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin, Karl Kautsky, Ignácio Rangel, Armem Mamigonian, entre outros nos apoiou para que realizássemos uma pesquisa minuciosa, entrevistando proprietários e/ou administradores de unidades industriais da região, trabalhadores assalariados etc., visando obter informações e dados acerca da temática estudada. Nessa dissertação, analisamos: 1) a importância da indústria (principalmente o ramo da madeira) para o povoamento dessa região do Paraná; 2) verificamos as condições que a formação social (marcada pela presença de pequenos proprietários de terra, artesãos e comerciantes) ofereceu ao constituir uma pequena produção mercantil; 3) observamos a importância que o capital financeiro teve, tanto modernizando a agricultura como financiando a produção industrial (principalmente a partir da segunda metade da década de 1970); 4) observamos a importância que as políticas de fomento à industrialização, as inovações no processo produtivo, bem como a oferta de matérias-primas, e de força de trabalho, têm tido para atrair unidades industriais para essa região; e, 5) verificamos o aumento de renda promovido pela indústria, que, aliás, tem contribuído, de certa forma, para uma melhoria geral das condições de vida da população do Sudoeste do Paraná.

However, we verified that in the human sciences, specifically at the Geography, in the last epochs has been given little attention to the production, mainly to industrialization. In this study, we realized a analysis about the industry`s importance at the Southwest of the Parana`s development, region of new population occupation, happened mainly after the 1940`s. By the realization of that study, proceeded to light from the historic materialism, method which to consist, thick manner, in to analyses the formations and transformations occurred at the society from active production and from work`s connections intrinsic to its. The theoretical reference Marxism mainly the Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin, Karl Kautsky, Ignácio Rangel, Armem Mamigonian`s studies, among others abetted us to that realized a detailed research, interviewing owns and executives of industrial unities from region, salaried workers etc, looking at to get information and dies about the thematic studied. In this discourse, we analyzed: 1) the importance of the industry (mainly the wood`s branch) to the population of this region from Parana; 2) we verified the conditions that the social formation (marked by presence of few owns of earth, craftsmen and merchants) offered to organize a few merchant production; 3) we saw the importance that had the financial capital, as modernizing the agricultural as financing the industrial production (mainly from the second half at 1970`s); 4) we saw the importance that the abetment politics to industrialization, the offer of raw materials, and of work`s power, have been to attract industrial unities to this region; and, 5) we verified the increase of income advanced by industry, that besides, has been contributed, somehow, to a geral advancement of the life`s conditions from Southwest of the Parana`s population. / Como escreveram Marx e Engels (1998), a produção é de suma importância ao homem, mais do que isso, ela é responsável pela própria humanização; à medida que os homens, ao contrário dos animais que vivem à mercê da natureza (da oferta de alimentos, resistindo às intempéries climáticas etc.), conseguem produzir os meios de sobrevivência dos quais necessitam (alimentos, vestuário, residências etc.). No entanto, verificamos que nas ciências humanas, especificamente na Geografia, nos últimos tempos tem-se dado pouca atenção à produção, principalmente à industrialização. Nessa pesquisa, realizamos uma análise da importância da indústria no desenvolvimento do Sudoeste do Paraná, região de ocupação populacional recente, ocorrida principalmente após a década de 1940. Para a realização de tal estudo, procedemos à luz do materialismo histórico, método que consiste, grosso modo, em analisar as formações e transformações ocorridas na sociedade a partir da organização produtiva e das relações de trabalho inerentes a ela. O referencial teórico marxista principalmente estudos de Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin, Karl Kautsky, Ignácio Rangel, Armem Mamigonian, entre outros nos apoiou para que realizássemos uma pesquisa minuciosa, entrevistando proprietários e/ou administradores de unidades industriais da região, trabalhadores assalariados etc., visando obter informações e dados acerca da temática estudada. Nessa dissertação, analisamos: 1) a importância da indústria (principalmente o ramo da madeira) para o povoamento dessa região do Paraná; 2) verificamos as condições que a formação social (marcada pela presença de pequenos proprietários de terra, artesãos e comerciantes) ofereceu ao constituir uma pequena produção mercantil; 3) observamos a importância que o capital financeiro teve, tanto modernizando a agricultura como financiando a produção industrial (principalmente a partir da segunda metade da década de 1970); 4) observamos a importância que as políticas de fomento à industrialização, as inovações no processo produtivo, bem como a oferta de matérias-primas, e de força de trabalho, têm tido para atrair unidades industriais para essa região; e, 5) verificamos o aumento de renda promovido pela indústria, que, aliás, tem contribuído, de certa forma, para uma melhoria geral das condições de vida da população do Sudoeste do Paraná.

Reconstructive-memory process

This graduate report is a description of my artistic development through the graduate program at the University of Texas at Austin. It records my development and growth as an artist in relationship to the concepts, materials, and processes I have been investigating and exploring in the past three years. The graduate report focuses on three important concerns to which I’ve been dedicated. First, materials are imperative to my work. I physically collect and use my father’s ordinary objects and transform them with raw materials, such as clay, flour, honey, chocolate, beeswax, and petroleum jelly. The decision of choosing raw materials is based on my personal and cultural experiences. I am particularly interested in exploiting raw materials because I believe these raw materials can trigger a particular memory, place, or relationship that I want to preserve and remember. Second, my process of making involves ritualistic aspects with repetitive acts. I believe that everyday practices are a way of reconstructing relationships and remembering home. I am interested in embracing emotional attributes that may be simple activities: spraying a piece daily to keep it wet or sewing a personal object until it is impossible to sew. Finally, through the relationship among the objects, repeated actions, and an anticipation that evokes magical power and charged energy, I methodically transform objects. I do this to celebrate emotions and to preserve not only these personal objects but also my memories of home. / text

Préhistoire de la Moyenne-Côte-Nord : le chert de la Minganie et l’utilisation des ressources lithiques

Ce mémoire traite de l’utilisation des matières premières lithiques telle que représentée sur les sites préhistoriques de la Moyenne-Côte-Nord du Golfe du Saint-Laurent, au Québec. Cette étude régionale se base sur la réanalyse d’un nombre important de collections archéologiques et accorde une grande importance à l’identification et à la description des matières premières utilisées. Un matériau d’origine locale, le Chert de la Minganie, y occupe une place particulière. L’importance de ce matériau pour la préhistoire régionale était jusqu’ici virtuellement inconnue. Suite à nos analyses, un inventaire complet des matières premières utilisées est mis sur pied. Ces données mettent en évidence un certain nombre de comportements. Principalement, nous identifions deux ensembles qui illustrent la présence de territoires attribuables à la répartition de groupes amérindiens subrégionaux (bandes). Finalement, à travers l’utilisation des ressources lithiques, les liens qui rattachent les groupes de notre région d’étude à ceux de la péninsule du Québec-Labrador sont illustrés. / This thesis deals with lithic raw material use as evidenced on prehistoric sites from the middle North Shore of the Saint Lawrence River, Quebec. This regional study is based on the reanalysis of a large number of archaeological collections and places central importance on the identification and description of the varieties of lithics that were used. A specific material of local origin, Mingan chert, occupies a special place in this study. The importance of this material for regional prehistory has remained, until now, poorly understood. As a result of our analyses, a full inventory of the lithic varieties used on these sites is presented and permits us to illustrate certain prehistoric behaviours. Principally, we identify two sets of sites which correspond to the presence of subregional aboriginal groups (bands). Finally, raw material use demonstrates social and exchange ties that link the groups of our study area to those of the broader region of the Quebec-Labrador peninsula.
