Rational Choice: EinzelbesprechungTutić, Andreas 20 September 2024 (has links)
Band „Rational Choice Sociology. Essays on Theory, Collective Action and Social

onderskei word: Die eerste dimensie is 'n kriminologiese introspeksie
Doelgerigtheid, morele oorwegings, teesin in
in aanhoud i ng, gefokusde semi -gest ruktureerde ind i epte-onderhoude gevoer.
In the investigation into the modus operandi of the bank robber: a
criminological introspection, three dimensions can be distinguished. The
first dimension is a criminological introspection comprising the meaning
attached by bank rob.bers to the execution of bank robberies. This world
of the subjects is entered and co-scouted. Sense of purpose, mora 1
considerations, aversion to violence, charisma, cognitive powers and a
materialistic disposition are conceptions that elucidate the bank robber
as a human.
The second dimension is represented by the grounded theory as research
method, based on the work of Strauss and Corbin (1990), which are applied
to facilitate such research aims. During the initial phase of the
investigation, focused, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were held
with 28 bank robbers in detention. Subsequent interviews were held with
six of the 28 subjects, aimed at expanding a substantive grounded theory,
to clear up differences and to increase the validity of the data.
The third dimension reflects the development of a substantive grounded
theory which is revealed in propositions and signalised in four phases
of the bank robber's modus operandi, namely the planning, execution,
disposal and reconsideration phases. Each of these identified phases is
characterised by progressive movement, natura 1 continuity, emot i ona 1
experiences and an individualistic infusion. The basic elements, namely
decision-making and rationalisation, are prominent in the cadre of the
bank robber's modus operandi.
The substantive grounded theory is aimed at explaining the study
phenomenon. Consideration of the investigation as well as other aims of
the researcher are accommodated in the theory. Further comparative
studies can assist in refining or falsifying the substantive grounded
theory or, failing, to expand it to a formal theory.
The grounded theory is therefore regarded as appropriate for future
research on subjects about which there is a lack of empirical findings
and relatively little knowledge in criminological literature. The theory
offers, in addition, the advantage of a pluriform research study. / Sociology / D. Litt et Phil. (Kriminologie)

Kina i Afrika : En kvalitativ fallstudie om Kinas ekonomiska expansion i afrikanska länder med fokus på Sydafrika / China in Africa : A qualitative case study of China's economic expansion in African countries with a focus on South AfricaForsell, Frida January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to explain Chinas growing presence in Africa through a case study regarding the relationship with South Africa and highlight the specific features of this Chinese presence. In order to achieve the essays goal two theoretical perspectives will be applied to examine the data. These two theoretical perspective is the theory of imperialism defined by Johan Galtung and Rational Choice theory defined by Vivien Lowndes, et al. Through a textual analysis of the sources used, the essay has found that Chinese finance projects in Africa that are commercially viable and mutually beneficial for the African countries still somehow have an negative impact on the African countries development. The textual analysis also account for the motives and reasons behind Chinese presence on the continent as lack of resources as the main reason for China and the lack of a developed society for the African countries. The essay examine as well the consequence with the Chineses expansion on the continent for the African sovereignty and their development in the future.

The quest for the mindful presence : A qualitative study on the practice of Buddhist insight meditation in a secular societyHansson, Johanna January 2016 (has links)
In this bachelor’s thesis I have focused on the question why people who live in secular societies use insight or vipassana meditation. The study is based on the rational choice theory developed by Rodney Stark. I have used an inductive qualitative method including e-mail interviews with practitioners of vipassana meditation. The study has shown why some people start the practice and how people’s expectations of vipassana meditation can differ in what they wanted from their practice. The study showed that practitioners and the society that surrounds them influenced each other. The study highlighted the way vipassana meditation was practiced on a secular basis.

PARENTAL CHOICE OF NONDENOMINATIONAL CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: REASONS FOR CHOICE, EXIT, AND THE TYPES AND SOURCES OF INFORMATION USEDHall, Robert M. 01 January 2009 (has links)
School Choice is a topic that finds itself at the top of school reform and political agendas across the United States, while also being a significant focal point in the educational literature. However, little attention in the debate has been placed on private, independent school choice – including private religious school choice – despite that data that shows “seventy-nine percent of all private schools had a religious affiliation in 1999– 2000: 30 percent . . . affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, and 49 percent with other religious groups” (U.S. Department of Education, 2002, p. 3) and that “initial research on school choice that concentrated on private schools did acknowledge that many parents are likely to choose a private school for religious values” (Bauch and Goldring, 1995).
This study focuses on examining the choice behaviors of families who choose independent, nondenominational Christian education, including the reasons they choose to exit before graduation and including the central role of information sources in making such choices. The study uses Rational Choice Theory and Hirschman’s Exit, Voice and Loyalty Theory as theoretical frameworks in order to couch the findings. The conclusions of this study are further couched in a bi-modal framework that posits choice involves “foundational factors” necessary for further investigation of potential schools and “factors of ethos” that, in essence, “break the tie” in the choice process – leading families to choose one particular school over others.
The findings of the study, similar to the findings within other school choice literature, show that word-of-mouth information sources – predominant in informal/relational connections – are clearly the “most helpful” and “most important” sources of information in the choice process. However, the importance of web-based sources and achievement test scores also are found to be significant information sources for families who choose private, nondenominational Christian Education. In addition, in this study the differences between exiters and families that reenroll are not shown to be statistically significant and, therefore, the author suggests that theories focused on the ongoing relationships between constituents and organizations, instead of theories related to exit such as Hirschman’s Exit theory, may be more beneficial in the ongoing school choice and school reform debates.

Empreendedorismo Político e Relações Internacionais / Political Entrepreneurship and International RelationsSarmento Junior, Carlos Adolfo Schmidt 18 October 2012 (has links)
The article develops the concept of \'Political Entrepreneur\' of Russell Hardin (1982), from the approach of the Rational Choice and of the Theory of the Public Good. Originally applied to the Political Science, the objective is transforming the concept in an instrument of analysis for the evaluation about the performance of States in the International Relations. For that, the article utilizes of the taxonomy of Soares de Lima (1990) for assessing the behavior of developing countries, and qualifies the performance of Brazil as \'entrepreneur\' in two case studies that will be object of consideration in the coming empirical article.

A Limited Rational Choice Theory in Local Public Health Decision MakingBryan, Lona 01 January 2018 (has links)
The threat and occurrence of terrorist attacks have increased in the United States since September 2011, heightening concerns for weaponized anthrax, other biological pathogens, and epidemics and pandemics. Early decisions and funding levels in local public health agencies can be the first line of defense or first point of failure; yet little is understood about how decisions are made when there are budget cuts before a biological event happens. Using Lindblom's conceptualization of limited rational choice theory, the purpose of this single case study was to understand how a local public health official made decisions after budget cuts in a single public health entity in the mid-Atlantic area of the United States. Data were collected through an interview with 1 public health official and publicly available plans, procedures, and funding documents. These data were inductively coded and then subjected to Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis procedure. Findings indicated that the public health agency's ability to make the best decisions were negatively impacted by limited resources, though adequate planning before a catastrophic event, active and continual communication with stakeholders, and clarity about financial and resource needs can partially offset the impact of budgetary reductions. The implications for social change include recommendations to anticipate and address the needs of the public health system through decision making to protect the health care community and the reduction or elimination of the spread of disease in the wake of a biological incident.

Understanding voter participation in swing states in the United States : A theory consuming study to understand the factors explaining the difference of voter turnout in swing statesBrewer, Denice January 2019 (has links)
This thesis will apply a theory consuming method studying voter turnout between swing states in the United States. To accomplish the theory consuming study, the study is divided into two phases. It will start testing Downs’ rational choice theory and apply this to voter turnout. It will then move on to applying the independent variables, socioeconomic background and voting laws to understand voter turnout from this perspective. The study starts with the hypothesis that Downs’ rational choice theory should be able to explain swing states’ voter participation. However, the research shows rational choice theory cannot explain the voter turnout in swing states. In the second phase, the study tests socioeconomic background and voting laws. These two independent variables better explain the voter turnout in swing states. Being well educated while being well off financially have a bigger impact than what rational choice theory can explain. It does not matter if P is overestimated and C is almost nil, it did not help to explain the voter difference in swing states, even though according to the theory, swing states should vote accordingly. To be able to increase voter turnout in swing states with a low voter turnout, not only does voting laws have to become more liberal, but one law in particular seems to make the biggest difference: the possibility to register on election day. However, changing voting laws are not enough. The largest impact is your socioeconomic background. A high educational attainment and being financially stable over the poverty level are the core reasons for voter turnout. Taking people out of poverty and creating opportunities for all to attend college is where higher voter turnout starts.
