Perceptions of Florida school library media specialists relative to the saliency of collaboration, leadership, and technology tasks outlined in Information Power: Changes since 1996

Pace, Terrell M 01 June 2007 (has links)
In 1988 Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs (IP1) was published. Ten years later an updated version, Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning (IP2) was released. The purpose of this study was to determine if school library media specialists' perceptions had changed since 1996 and if respondents' familiarity with IP2 was a factor in the development of those perceptions. Further, 37 items that were clustered based on the three primary threads of collaboration, leadership and technology developed in IP2 were used to assess changes in perceptions. An electronic survey was developed and disseminated to the population of school library media specialists in Florida. A total of 454 completed surveys were received; representing a 17% return rate. The results of the current survey were then compared to a 1996 job task analysis study. Analysis of the results showed that 60% of the respondents had never attended an in-service on IP2. Statistically significant changes in perceptions about the importance of those 37 job tasks resurveyed were also identified. Changes were identified in 10 of the 14 collaboration items, 12 of the 13 leadership items and 9 of the 10 technology items. Changes in perception were also found for tasks that the respondents considered not a part of job. For the 37 job tasks, there were 11 statistically significant positive changes and two statistically significant negative changes. The environmental variable that correlated with the largest number of the 37 job tasks related to the principal making encouraging comments to classroom teachers about using the resources of the school library media center in the planning of their curriculum units. This variable correlated significantly with 24 of the 37 job tasks. The study revealed a need for additional research in the leadership roles and traits of the school library media specialist. Further, additional research related to the effect of administrative support could inform the profession in its efforts to solidify the school library media program as an integral part of the instructional program.

Agélii, Anni January 2022 (has links)
Empiri samlades in i forma av 10 semistrukturerade intervjuer. / Quality culture is part of the organizational culture and an important part of maintaining or changing an organizational culture is the leadership. In school organizations there are many demands on the content and quality of the activities in terms of laws and governing documents. The systematic quality work must include teachers, other employees, students and their guardians. The person ultimately responsible for the work at the school unit is the school's principal. A state surevey published in 2021 describes the complex function that an effective school library should have. The state survey emphasizes the importance of the principal's leadership in order for the school library to be part of the teaching and that the quality of the school library must be high. The purpose of this the survey is to explore which underlying values are favorable for the school library's quality work. What characterizes the organizational culture of successful school libraries and in what way are they managed and organized. This survey is designed through a qualitative method and has an abductive approach. Empirical data was collected through ten semi-structured interviews. The results showed that even if there is no pronounced work with total quality management in the school libraries inlcuded in this survey, quality culture values are found. In addition to these, a co-leadership based on competence and participation appears. The meaning of leadership becomes an individual and a collective process that requires both leaders, followers and meaning-making context. The work with the school library becomes a clear part of the school's development. The starting point for both the principal and the school librarian is the action plan which is locally designed for the school library. /
2022-11-08

Hur fungerar skolbiblioteken?

Hallenberg, Emelie January 2015 (has links)
This master thesis is aiming to find out how school libraries work towards children in school years 1-6. The mainfocus is how the school librarians and teachers work with literature and reading. The theoretical viewpoints aremainly the sociocultural theory and the child perspective. The study was conducted with participants from five different schools in Uppsala, in the form of qualitativesemi-structured interviews. The results show that schools work with literature first and foremost in a pragmaticway, with reading-strategies and activating discussions. Very little time is spent on reading for its own sake. Thegeneral opinion is that the school libraries could – and should – be used more in the daily school work. Thelibrarians claim that they lack both time and financial resources to execute certain projects or be able to offer awider diversity of material. Finally, it is obvious that school libraries vary a lot in both ambition and resources.

Student Performance of a Library-Related Task

Haskell, Loretta Murray 05 1900 (has links)
The high school research paper is a task which consumes instructional time, requires considerable student effort, and places a high demand on school library resources. Little research has been conducted on how students accomplish this task. Academic task research indicates that in classrooms, tasks are defined by students in terms of (a) the nature of the products the teacher will accept and (b) the operations allowed and the resources available. Here the product is the research paper; the resources available include those found in the school library. The purpose of this study was to determine what strategies students use to perform the library-related task.

No. of bitstreams: 1 DISSERTA??O FINAL COM AJUSTES_PUBLICAR.pdf: 13980329 bytes, checksum: 1d822c0531df84a93d411b4fc59077c3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-12-08 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / This present research Time for Literary Literacy: a reading proposal to the school library, had as its main objective to observe and analyze the consequences of the pedagogical action of reading literary narratives aloud by a teacher, in the space-time of the school library, set up in a sequence of reading and writing activities, integrated with the Portuguese language teaching. The question that guided this work was structured as follows: What developments can be observed from the reading of literary narratives aloud, performed by a teacher in the school library space-time? In order to reflect on our research object, the reading, theoretical background studies of Kleiman (2006; 2008), Tfouni (1995), Rojo (2010; 2012), Manguel (2004 [1996]), Cosson (2014 [2006]), among others were used. The methodology adopted in this process is centered in the Action-research field and qualitative inquiries, and therefore, interpretation, based on the studies of Tripp (2005), Bogdan (1994). As data collection and production the instruments used were questionnaires, initial diagnostic activities, students textual productions performed during the intervention (first and last) and the researcher reflective diary. The research locus was a public school, set in a suburb, located in Feira de Santana, in Bahia. The study subjects were 22 students enrolled in a 5th grade class of elementary school, seeking to observe the students? reader profile at the final cycle of schooling. The results of this research confirmed that the reading aloud performed by a teacher is a pedagogical action that can directly influence the formation of critical and reflective individuals, because the reading of narratives, especially those present in literary texts can help extend significantly self-understanding and world understanding, decisively helping the individual choices in readings and also interfering positively in the students written productions.

Fernanda Farias de Freitas 27 March 2013 (has links)
The thesis was brought to light due to a particular necessity of guaranteeing enough space for reading at school, since this competence is a tool which offers the students the possibility of transiting through diverse areas of knowledge in a much easier way. A residential school was used in this context to the development of mediating reading practices applied in the Clube de Leitores workshop. By the exchange of impressions and experiences, the students perceive the Portuguese language in one of its biggest manifestations: the literature. During the research development, it was observed the reading progress of a group of students and how the contact with the text contributed to the improvement of oral and written discourses. The present work sets forth reflections regarding mother tongue teaching under the scope of textual genres. In addition to that, it also shows the training of readers based on the national curricular orientations. The methodology used in the Reading Program of Escola Sesc de Ensino Médio is exposed, emphasizing the role of the library and its performance. Taking these aspects into consideration, it is proposed that other educational institutions follow in its footsteps and make the most of the suggestions mentioned with the purpose of promoting reading at schools and profiting from the linguistic benefits that practice provides

A history of the School Library Association in Canberra and District : the first decade 1971-1981

Haigh, Colleen, n/a January 1988 (has links)
This study traces many of the highlights which occurred during the first decade of the history of the School Library Association in Canberra and District (SLACAD). The roots of this association lie deep in the history of school libraries and teacherlibrarianship in Australia. Many SLACAD members belonged to other state school library associations and to the Australian School Library Association (ASLA) confederation since the establishment of these associations in the 1960's. These teacher-librarians have been dedicated in their attempts to further the cause of school libraries and their teacher-librarianship profession. The decade covered by this study embraces the greatest period of expansion in the development of school libraries seen in Australian history. During this decade the A.C.T. established an independent education system and it took many years for the A.C.T. Schools Authority administration to finalise its organisation. SLACAD members were anxious that school libraries in the A.C.T. should keep pace with school libraries in other Australian states and this study documents the constant efforts of its members to obtain improvements in school librarianship. Teacher-librarians in the A.C.T. have continued to maintain a close liaison with ASLA and many A.C.T. teacher-librarians have held executive office in ASLA. SLACAD has hosted seminars and conferences and this study documents numerous submissions and reports which were a necessary feature of the expanding A.C.T. school library association milieu.

A survey study on school library book borrowing patterns of primary school children according to age, sex and reading level

Prattis, John, n/a January 1992 (has links)
This survey study examines the type and frequency of books borrowed by students according to age, sex and reading ability. It seeks to redress the sparsity of information available on the types and style of books borrowed by children. This survey study is based on data gathered over 14 weeks at Wanniassa Hills Primary School. Weekly library borrowings were recorded for Years 2. 3/4 and 5/6. A sample of 90 children, 30 from each year level was selected and individual borrowings were coded for analysis according to the type of book borrowed. The SAS System was used to tabulate the data and conclusions were drawn from the results thus obtained. The survey study revealed that females borrow more books generally than males. A general pattern of book borrowing is evident. Females tend to progress more quickly man males through this pattern of borrowing. Males tend to prefer Non- Fiction books, progressing to Choose Your Own Adventure books and Fantasy Game books. Recommendations are based on these findings and other outcomes of the survey study. This survey study has implications for classroom practice, libraries, basic readers and further study.

Danielsson, Caroline January 2013 (has links)
Since reading difficulties is a growing problem in Society and a problem that hinders Children to take an active part in every day life, I wanted to investigate how the School Library can be an educational resource for students with reading difficulties. Using qualitative interviews, I have gained insight into how three school librarians and two teachers work with Students with reading difficulties at two different Schools. The Respondents feel that they have the Knowledge necessary to work with students with reading difficulties, but Wish they had more Resources in terms of Time and Staff to help Students achieve School Goals even better. There are always new assistive technology for Students with Reading Difficulties, and an important part of the Educational work of the School Library, is to be informed of the Facilities available and how they work. I show, in my Research the importance of cooperation between school libraries and teachers to provide the students with reading difficulties the love of reading and work to promote reading. It is important that the School Librarian is an integral part of the School's Team to take full advantage of every opportunity to help the Reading Impaired Students with Information and finding the right Reading Level. Other important aspects that I see as very important to help the Reading Impaired Students in their Reading Development, is that they are given a lot of time and a Peaceful and Stimulating Environment to read and learn in.
