Coupled careers: Win-win or zero-sum? : How the partner’s occupational status relates to individual labor market outcomes

Lewenhagen, Lars January 2017 (has links)
The dynamics between partners’ careers have implications for household and gender inequality as heterosexual unions are usually formed by two individuals with similar educational attainment where the man has a stronger labor market position. This paper examines how the partner’s occupational status relates to individual career outcomes, and how the association varies by gender. The literature reports conflicting expectations on the subject. Social capital theory suggests that an occupationally successful partner can be beneficial to one’s career because of useful contacts, information, and advice. Economic theory assumes a negative relationship between the resources of the partner and own career outcomes due to less time and effort spent in the labor market. Using multiple regression analysis predicting hourly wage, annual income, and career progression, the contrasting hypotheses are tested on Swedish panel data including 1,065 married or cohabitating individuals. Results show a positive correlation between the partner’s occupational status at the start of cohabitation and hourly wage and career progression. The association does not differ significantly between men and women. However, the findings show that gender is more important than the partners’ occupational status for the interaction between careers in dual-earner couples.

Barbier, Pascal 21 November 2012 (has links)
Who are the sales assistants and what does their day at work look like? Based on anethnographic survey (participant observation in a parisian department store and interviews),this thesis answers these questions and contributes to the sociology of work and the sociologyof the clerks. Firstly, by exploring the working and employment conditions of the salesmen, their technics and savoir-faire, the way they see their work, it sheds light on a work rarelyobserved by the sociology of work. Secondly, the thesis contributes to the sociology of clerks. It analyses a part of this group that can be seen as belonging to an “in-between” area: betweenthe most insecure job and the steady and qualified work.

Tensões em torno da efetivação do direito à saúde no Sistema Único de Saúde / Tensions around the efetivation of health right in the Health Unified System (SUS)

Mendosa, Douglas 09 February 2007 (has links)
The Health Unified System is a result of the social fights occurred in Brazil during the decades of 70 and 80 of the twentieth century. Their main goals were the enlargement of the right of health notion and the overcoming of the differencial access of Brazilian people in relation to medical care. The creation of an institutional space in which these goals could become reality was the greatest achievement of those fights. After the period of its institutionalization, this structured and structuring space of the Brazilian citizens? action towards health reveals the inability in concreting those objectives. In this setting, the individuals? experience and the rules that try to materialize those old ideals show some recurrent tension spots in relation to the possibility of the right of attention and the health recovering efetivation. By fixing in the question of how the user-citizens are or not conquering the service, it was not possible to escape from the unavoidable restatement of the public health system inadequacy. Characteristic that, in its turn, indicates the maintenance of the differencial access standard in relation to the goods and services addressed to the individual health regaining, since the Health Unified System (SUS) space is still the space of the poor or of those in a social vulnerability situation.

Hennig, Marina 28 April 1999 (has links)
Against the background of a disappearing East German state - a historic event which affected all generations to varying degrees – this study examines the effect that prevailing conditions and the resultant functioning of individuals within the social structure had on people’s approaches to childrearing and to individuality and subordination. The study focuses on three generations whose life courses were or still are closely linked with two world wars, the post-war economic miracle, the division of Germany and major economic and socio-structural changes within Germany. Distinctions are also made between East and West Germany. The three generations are on the one hand described within their respective historical contexts, and on the other examined in the light of the prominent socialisation theories of their time. These include the authoritarianism theory of the Frankfurt School, the theory of class-specific socialisation by Melvin Kohn, and Ronald Inglehart’s theory of value change. These theories are treated as hypotheses, the validity of which is tested by comparing the values identified for the different generations. The family surveys carried out by the Munich-based Deutsches Jugendinstitut form the empricial basis for this work.

The village that vanished : The roots of erosion in a Tanzanian village

Loiske, Vesa-Matti January 1995 (has links)

In the village'of Citing in the northern highlands of Tanzania, the factors: social stratification, land tenure, production strategies, investment patterns and the economic uncertainties of society are studied and their relationship to land degradation is examined. The main assumption of the study is that the causes of land degradation are so complex that a methodology that emphasises contextualisation has to be used. A methodological framework that considers inter-linkages between all these factors is developed and tested. The result of the test shows that contextualisation gives a more in-depth and complex explanation than conventional, positivist research. The study gives a detailed account of the relationship that various wealth groups have to land and land degradation in the village. It is found that all wealth groups are destructive to the land but in varying ways. The rich farmers are over-cultivating land marginal to agriculture, the middle peasants have too many cattle in the village while the poor peasants are so marginalised socially that they hardly influence land management. Those identified as having economic as well as social incentives to maintain soil fertility are the middle peasants, while the rich farmers are shown to be consciously soil-mining the former grazing areas.

Elitism and Equality in Chinese Higher Education : Studies of Student Socio-economic Background, Investment in Education, and Career Aspirations

Huang, Lihong January 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to present an empirical pattern of social equity in Chinese higher education by investigating university students. Student socio-economic background influences access to, and socio-economic conditions in, higher education, and this, in turn, influences student career aspirations. The theoretical background of the study is interdisciplinary and a conceptual framework built on theories and previous research is used to analyse Chinese higher education in a historical, social and economic context. A questionnaire survey was administered at six public universities in the Southwest region of the country to explore students’ socio-economic background, costs and how they finance their studies, as well as their future career aspirations. The relationships between the factors investigated were examined using factor analytical techniques and linear structural relations (LISREL) analysis. The findings indicate that the students come from all socio-economic strata but a disproportionately large number are from high-income families. Students from urban areas are over-represented while rural girls are significantly under-represented. Although the gap between the lowest and highest study costs is enormous, the findings confirm that the average cost of higher education in China far exceeds the average annual income, even for urban residents. Moreover, about one-third of students and their families utilised financial resources other than family such as student loans, borrowing, and other forms of financial assistance. A structural model linking student socio-economic background, enrolment in elite institutions, costs and means of financing education with career aspirations is developed and tested in three stages in order to shed light on the conceptual framework and to present a pattern of social equity. The results show that family socio-economic status has only a modest impact on student access to and in higher education. On the other hand, having social origins in a well-developed community exerts an influential effect. Although study and living costs, and means of financing studies, are influenced by student socio-economic background, they intend to have positive impacts on student career aspirations. While enrolment in elite institutions has a strongly positive impact on costs, it has a moderately negative impact on aspirations to pursue advanced degrees. In conclusion, the study finds that the patterns of socio-economic factors influencing student upward mobility in present-day China are different from those of ancient China and from those previous Communist leaders attempted to achieve only 20 years ago.
