Hurling together with technology : appropriation of the mobile phone in the everyday life of an Irish community group

Byrne, Pat January 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines how a new media technology becomes entrenched into the fabric of society – in particular how the mobile phone was incorporated into the existing communications landscape of a local voluntary community group: an Irish sports club. In the past, face-to-face interaction formed the basis of all social relations and strong local collectives were seen to provide a positive and supportive social environment, generating strong social capital. Today’s mediated communication enables the ‘networked individual’ who can choose when, where and with whom they share their lives. This has implications for the persistence and strength of local associations. Writers like Putnam (2000) have expressed concerns about the attenuation of local communities. However, others propose that communications technologies can provide new additional ways for individuals to link with each other in a ‘glocalised’ society (Hampton and Wellman, 2003) and this has the potential to overcome some of the limitations of the communicators not being in the same physical space. This thesis critically examines the applicability of these partly competing theses in the period in which mobile telephony became widely embedded in Irish society. Through 21 detailed interviews and a survey of 57 players, administrators and supporters, the study examines the choices made by club members in adopting and using the mobile phone. It further explores the changes they have made in their communication patterns and considers the implications of these for the cohesion and persistence of the community group as an entity and also the social capital it engenders. The study draws upon existing theories of human-technology interaction, in particular the Social Shaping of Technology perspective (Williams and Edge, 1996), to examine how club members weave their phone use into their everyday practices. Silverstone and Haddon’s (1996) Domestication approach, with its steps of appropriation, objectification and incorporation provide the detailed framework in mapping out this process. The study findings reveal that community members have all adopted the mobile phone and are heavy users of both text and voice calls. Membership of the sports club has eased the adoption process by providing examples of the artefact in use and a supporting environment when problems arise. Although use is now universal and intensive, there was a differential appropriation of the phone, with male club members being the first purchasers and females often being brought into the circle of users through a gifted or handed-down model. Users have devised strategies to manage their multiple overlapping sets of social relationship. They report that their use of technology has enabled a widening of their social circle while also bringing it closer, literally at the touch of a button. Contrary to the expectations of those analysts and policymakers who have foreseen technology causing local engagement to diminish, the clubs in my study have endured and are thriving; the social capital of their members is still strong and growing. This informs a critical reappraisal of such theories of community attenuation and the policies they have engendered.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Joao Gurgel de Campos.pdf: 1476147 bytes, checksum: 4276536a448b9a29344ffa0ec61a1f14 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-23 / Sport has been considered a very important product for the world economy and sports management plays a fundamental role in the development of sports and sports organizations in the world. Even with all this relevance, little is produced scientifically on the subject in Brazil. The choice for social sport clubs as a research environment is due to the fact that they are considered models of non-profit organizations whose essence is directed towards their associate. Because it is a type of organization that in its management has a hybrid model composed of voluntary statutory sports managers (president, directors and advisers), and remunerated sports managers (managers, supervisors, coordinators and leaders, among others) As management concomitantly concludes, if there are conflicts between these two levels and, to this end, it is necessary to know the actions and competencies of its leaders. Thus, this research aims to identify the competencies of managers of social sports clubs and whether these competencies are entrepreneurial. It is a qualitative research, exploratory in nature and the instrument of data collection is the interview, supported by a semi-structured script. The data were treated in the light of content analysis, according to Bardin (1977) guidelines. The results show that there is a diversity among the types of conflicts existing in social sports clubs, and through the study of Man and Lau (2005), the research mapped the entrepreneurial competences used by the managers involved. It was possible to observe applicability of the typology of entrepreneurial competences on the actions of managers in the management of conflicts. The conclusions warn of the need to develop an entrepreneurial look at the competencies of managers. The reports of sports managers also indicate that there is knowledge among them that they live in a conflicting environment, due to the organizational structure. Faced with conflict management, it was clear that there are differences between voluntary and paid managers, although both have entrepreneurial competences in their prevention and manipulation. In this way, the study contributed to the academic development of conflict management and entrepreneurial competences in relating the themes, as well as generating a still incipient material in Brazil about social sports clubs and their administrative model.

Smluvní vztahy profesionálních sportovců a sportovních klubů / Contracts between professional sportsmen and sports clubs

Jenšovský, Jan January 2009 (has links)
The topic of this diploma thesis is contracts between professional sportsmen and sports clubs and its implication on credit rating of sports clubs. Firstly, the legal framework of sport and sport contracts is defined both in Czech and European perspective with evaluation of differences. Within this legal framework the distinctions of a sports club, in relation to other production enterprises, are described. Main difference further studied in the application part is the inability to display professional sportsmen as a major asset of a sports club in the club's balance sheet. Financial implications of this difference are then given. In the application part the hypothesis that the disproportionate amount of club's assets in the production of sport's goods has negative influence on credit rating of sports club is tested. Two models based on financial data of Czech professional football club, AC Sparta Praha fotbal a.s., are created and tested. Finally, the results are compared and assessed.

Selektering - vad innebär det för unga idrottare? / Selection – what does it mean for young athletes?

Johansson, Jesper January 2021 (has links)
The meaning of this study is to get a perception on young athletes’ opinions about selection and their experience with selection. The study finds its starting point in when the researcher read through articles from evening papers and former studies about the effect’s selection might have on children and young adults. The study was completed by a quantitative method theory and the researcher created an inquiry that had questions who had connections with Children’s convention. Sports clubs were contacted by either email and telephone, sports clubs who accepted a participation later contacted young adults who were between ages fifteen and seventeen. The survey was sent to sports club in Värmland and the number of participants in this survey was 96. Previous research about selection clearly shows violations against the Children’s convention and results are far more important than children well-being, sports clubs explains that it is easier to explain children’s obligations than children’s rights. The result in this study shows that many young adults thinks that selection is positive but not every young adult is experiencing the same thing. Furthermore, the young athletes but not every young adult are accepting that selection is something that should be done in sports clubs in a daily basis, only in youth sports (age 15-16). Few of the young athletes have been experiencing events that is a violation against Children’s convention during a selection process. It must be done more research in this subject to get more results and show more clearly what it is happening in Swedish children and young athletes’ sports and if the Children’s convention can be used as a tool during selection. Finally, I discuss that there perhaps is not a right way for everyone to follow, because some of the young athletes’ think that early specialization works well while other young athletes’ think that you can be active in several sports.

Lindskog, Klas, Olsson, Elin January 2020 (has links)
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) was adopted in 1989 and became a current topic again when the Swedish government incorporated it into Swedish law on the 1st of January 2020. UNCRC contains 54 articles and one of them is article 12, which states that all children have the right to express their views on any issue that concerns them. Research shows that this is rarely the case within sports clubs, and children struggle to make their voices heard. Therefore, the aim of the study was to bring knowledge about the board of the sports clubs point of view on this issue, and their experience of children's access to the democratic processes. Data were generated through interviews with 9 chairmen within different sports clubs. The results showed that the chairmen had very different definitions of democracy, and therefore their perceptions of children's access to it varied. On this basis a majority of the sports clubs believed the children had good access to the democratic processes within their sports clubs. In the cases where the opinion was that the children did not have good access, explanations were based on children's maturity or the coach's lack of time and knowledge. Another conclusion is that sports clubs in general make decisions based on what they think is best for the child or ask their parents instead, and therefore claim their club activities are good for children.

L'innovation sociale et les organisations sportives associatives : le cas des clubs sportifs dans les quartiers populaires / Social innovation and associative sports organization : the case of sports clubs in popular neighborhoods

Coignet, Benjamin 14 February 2012 (has links)

An organization in change : about sports associations in rural areas and their challenges in a post-modern society

Sandberg, Per January 2012 (has links)
In this thesis, a study of how Swedish sports associations in rural areas are affected by the societal changes which the advent of the post-modern society has brought is declared. The studied data has been collected through qualitative interviews and thenceforth analyzed through the research method grounded theory. The informants who have participated in the study are all active in sports clubs in small villages themselves, and this thesis provides an insight in their experiences which hopefully can contribute to an increased knowledge about how Swedish sports associations in rural areas may develop in the next few years. The results reveal that the studied sports clubs experience severe problems in the recruitment of new members as well as voluntary trainers and members of the board. Moreover, the study proves an ongoing conflict between urban and rural areas which in particular concerns allocation of resources and political priority.

Silva, Luís Henrique Rolim January 2008 (has links)
The 'Nation Torch Relay' – NTR – it is a cultural practice that marks the beginning of the celebrations from 'Nation’s Week’ in Porto Alegre city by the 1930's end. From 1938, the NTR has annually been edited by the National Defense League (NDL) with portoalegrenses sports leaders support. There were those leaders who idealized the NTR in Porto Alegre, after they watched the "Olympic Torch Relay" at Berlin Olympic Games opening ceremony in 1936. This study aims to understand the participation of portoalegrenses sports clubs in the construction of representations from the Brazilian national identity through the invention of the 'Nation Torch Relay' in the period from 1938 to 1947. For this purpose, printed and oral sources were used. The printed primary sources are limited to NDL’s documents and works; among the main printed secondary sources are Globo’s Magazine and Correio do Povo newspaper. There were two interviews, which are the oral sources. The ‘Nation Torch Relay’ (1938-1947) was an invented tradition in Porto Alegre city, institutionalized by NDL with social support from the city’s sports clubs. The justification of its achievement was made by historical and sacred’s links and its fixation through annual repetition in the cities. The NTR aimed to pass 'values'; and they were associated to the construction of Brazilian national identity. Thus, it produced in the porto-alegrense imagination, the representation of national cohesion and unity because of the way it roams about the nation and has as a point of culmination Porto Alegre city. In the sports context, it produced the representation that sports clubs identified, as 'foreigners', were 'adopted Brazilian ways and manners' due to athletes and sports leaders participation in the NTR.
