Le rôle du Times durant l'occupation britannique d'Égypte (1882-1956) / Times of Empire and Empire of The Times : the role of The Times during the British Occupation of Egypt (1882-1956)

Hamrat, Fatma-Zohra 25 November 2017 (has links)
This research is about The Times newspaper’s coverage of the situation in Egypt during the British occupation, that is from1882 to 1956. The historical context extends from a period when the Empire was at its apogee to its nadir. It is an attempt to suggest a new reading of the events that shaped the British policy in Egypt through the press, more precisely The Times. The objective is to determine the reactions of The Times to the evolution of the “Egyptian Question” and eventually the British policy. It will focus the imperial westward expansion in parallel with the evolution of journalism. The aim is also to approach the press from another angle, that of a press that may have an impact on, and be impacted by, political events. In other words, this study is an attempt to provide some key elements to answer the following questions: What was the role of The Times during the British occupation of Egypt? Can we consider an imperial commitment on the part of The Times? How did the editorial policy of The Times influence political decisions? What was the importance given to the “Thunderer” by policy makers? Finally, can we consider The Times as a means of conquest, a means of criticism or just a purveyor of news? We hope that this research will shed some light on the role of The Times in the construction and the maintaining of the British empire in Egypt.

Les représentations du canal de Suez (15ème-20ème s.) : esthétiques et politiques d'une vision / The representations of the Suez canal (XVe-XXe centuries) : aesthetics and policies of a vision

Braeuner, Hélène 24 September 2015 (has links)
The history of the Suez canal is a field of study that is still as alive and sensitive as ever, one that elicits mixed feelings. It is the story of its symbolism and the fantasies and projections that have sprung from it that is studied through a heretofore-unexamined literary and iconographical corpus. The originality of this research lies in its multiple approaches and the number of works assembled, which enables one to step out of a narrow chronology of the digging of the canal. It seeks to go beyond the restrictive vision of an endeavour that cannot be considered French colonial action yet is shot through with an ideology of conquest. It brings a fresh approach to the representation of orientalist travel. The artistic heritage born of this universal public work finally poses the question of its reception and how its memory is shared between East and West, with as much at stake today as ever.

Postoj Severoatlantické aliance k Suezské krizi roku 1956 / A Stance of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on Suez Crisis of 1956

Dolejší, Ondřej January 2018 (has links)
This master's thesis focuses on the development of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization between 1955 and 1956. One of its main aims is to analyze the impact the crisis had on the members of NATO, especially on the relations between Great Britain and France and between Great Britain and the United States. Therefore, the author of the thesis concentrates on various disagreements within NATO and their possible impact on how the organization reacted during the crisis. The author will also examine the development in the Middle East and the role of NATO members outside clearly defined boundaries of the organization. The research will be placed in broader context of the Cold War and political development in the Middle East. To find answers for all the research inquiries, structural changes within the organization and the development in the economically key area of defense capability are also examined in the thesis.

Containertransport till sjöss : En studie av containerkrisen 2020-202X / Containertransport at sea : A study of the containercrisis 2020-202X

Massini, Hashem, Papaioannou, Dominique Audrey Natalia January 2022 (has links)
The crisis in the global container supply chain clearly became visible in 2020 and is still ongoing. An imprint has indeed been left not only on the markets of container shipping transport but also on the world economy as a whole. Therefore, it may be beneficial to gain an in-depth understanding of the driving factors of this crisis, that in order to be able to deal better or even prevent similar future challenges. The purpose of this study was therefore to identify and describe a chain of events with their contributing factors and consequences that lead to the start of the container crisis in 2020. This study’s research questions were: 1.What are the most important contributing factors that disrupted the balance in container transport? 2.How is maritime containertransport affected and what is the role of the chain of events that resulted in the container crisis 2020-202X?  A qualitative literature review was conducted for this study. Moreover, the data collection method used for this paper consisted of secondary academic material, but also non-scientific articles, including news databases and maritime databases.  This study has identified that the main contributing factors to the container crisis were the Covid-19 and the Suez channel. However, it is also suggested that the trade war between USA and China has also served as the backbone of this crisis. Moreover, the identified concequences were shortage in containers, changes in the demand of goods during and prior to the pandemic and in further, disruptions in the supply chain, including schedule delays, congestions in ports and financial consequences in the global trade, specifically that of container transport.

Supply Chain Resilience: Disruptions in Global Maritime Transportation

Andresen, Vivien, Björn, Mathilda January 2022 (has links)
Supply chain resilience has become an important topic within supply chain management, as increasingly complex supply chains set out for increased risk in these networks. Supply chain resilience is a risk management approach that includes the ability to mitigate disruptions through specific capabilities. The previous disruptive events of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Suez Canal blockage-21 have highlighted the vulnerabilities of global trade and the need for more resilient supply chains. The purpose of this thesis was to analyse supply chain resilience and the need for dynamic and operational capabilities in the global maritime transport sector to mitigate impacts from slow-onset and sudden-onset disruptions. In specific, the vulnerabilities highlighted through the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Suez Canal blockage-21 over time. This study was conducted as a multiple case study investigating the maritime transport sector’s resilience during COVID-19 and the Suez Canal blockage-21. The data was triangulated through semi-structured interviews, industry podcasts, and business reports and further analysed using a grounded analysis approach. The study showed that the continuous disruptions on supply chains caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Suez Canal blockage-21 generated economic consequences, congestions, and capacity constraints that the maritime transport sector could not fully mitigate. The study also provides evidence that severe impacts on supply chains were not necessarily caused by a lack of resilience, but rather the persistency of disruptions did not diminish over time. Even though the maritime transportation sector is considered flexible and agile in adapting to the new market situation, increased collaboration, integration, innovation, and digitalization were found necessary to improve the resilience of the maritime transport sector to become even better prepared for future disruptions.

Hansson, Felix, Rågberger, Johan January 2023 (has links)
The supply chain is the underlying process which enablescompanies and customers to exchange goods and services. Centralto a functional supply chain is its resilience against disruptions.Resilience in the supply chain is its capability to prevent, manageand recover from disruptions. The last couple of years has beencharacterized by events that have caused disturbances in the supplychain. This study is set to research how two Swedish companieshave managed three specific disruptions, the Covid-19 pandemic, the blocking of the Suez Canal and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Thepurpose of this paper is to contribute with knowledge and researchabout resilience in the supply chain and how companies can adaptin a volatile world with unpredictable events that may occur. Themethod used consists of semi-structured interviews with the casecompanies and collection of literature and previous research withinthe research area. The results from the study presents that thecompany operating in the retail industry main strategy is tomaintain a transparent communication to its suppliers as well ascustomers in order to maintain a high level of certainty in its supplychain. The company operating in the forest industry explained inthe interview that the company prioritizes a high level of self-sufficiency in raw materials, energy and transportation in order tomaintain a high level of certainty in the supply chain. The resultalso explains that cooperation between the three abilities, prevent, manage and recover from disruptions is the foundation tomaintaining a high level of certainty in the supply chain. The studycontributes with insights on how companies are affected by andmanage the ongoing situation in Ukraine, with the supply chain as astarting point. Navigating Global Supply Chain Disruptions : A Case Study of Volvo Trucks for Enhanced Resilience and Risk Management in the Automotive Sector

Rensfeldt, Sanna, Kniele, Lea January 2024 (has links)
Global Supply Chains are fragile to disruptions and risks due to their complexity and the large number of players involved. In order to ensure the stability and effectiveness of the Global Supply Chain, it is therefore essential to identify and minimize potential risks and disruptions at an early stage. This study aims to explore the impact of disruptions on the Global Supply Chain and the enhancement of resilience in the automotive sector, with a focus on Risk Management strategies. The research objective is to analyze a case study within Volvo Trucks and identify Risk Management strategies for enhancing Supply Chain resilience in response to the Suez Canal Blockage. In order to achieve the objective of this research, a qualitative and deductive approach was employed to examine the subject. The existing frameworks identified in the literature review were utilized to inform the development of the interview guide for the data collection. The data collected from three semi-structured interviews with representatives of Volvo Trucks was subsequently analyzed to identify patterns between the theoretical framework and the practical case study. Given the significant impact of the Suez Canal Blockage on the automotive sector, a single automotive company (Volvo Trucks) was selected for examination of the effects on their Global Supply Chain. The study emphasizes the pivotal role of accurately identifying potential risks or crises in order to develop effective Risk Management strategies. The results show the importance of a proactive approach to Risk Identification, Assessment, Treatment and Monitoring to ensure Business Continuity and mitigate uncertainties. The findings of the analysis and conclusions to the research questions can be utilized as a basis for Risk Management strategies across the entire automotive sector. The findings of this study may prove beneficial for future research and for managers within the sector. The adapted framework of insights gained by Volvo Trucks can be used to guide Supply Chain Managers towards a more resilient Global Supply Chain. Furthermore, this framework could be employed in future research on Global Supply Chain resilience within the automotive sector to inform the studies.

Sovereignty, Peacekeeping, and the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF), Suez 1956-1967: Insiders’ Perspectives

Hilmy, Hanny 13 February 2015 (has links)
This research is concerned with the complex and contested relationship between the sovereign prerogatives of states and the international imperative of defusing world conflicts. Due to its historical setting following World War Two, the national vs. international staking of claims was framed within the escalating imperial-nationalist confrontation and the impending “end of empire”, both of which were significantly influenced by the role Israel played in this saga. The research looks at the issue of “decolonization” and the anti-colonial struggle waged under the leadership of Egypt’s President Nasser. The Suez War is analyzed as the historical event that signaled the beginning of the final chapter in the domination of the European empires in the Middle East (sub-Saharan decolonization followed beginning in the early 1960s), and the emergence of the United States as the new major Western power in the Middle East. The Suez experience highlighted a stubborn contest between the defenders of the concept of “sovereign consent” and the advocates of “International intervention”. Both the deployment of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) and its termination were surrounded by controversy and legal-political wrangling. The role of UNEF and UN peacekeeping operations in general framed the development of a new concept for an emerging international human rights law and crisis management. The UNEF experience, moreover, brought into sharp relief the need for a conflict resolution component for any peace operation. International conflict management, and human rights protection are both subject to an increasing interventionist international legal regime. Consequently, the traditional concept of “sovereignty” is facing increasing challenge. By its very nature, the subject matter of this multi-dimensional research involves historical, political and international legal aspects shaping the research’s content and conclusions. The research utilizes the experience and contributions of several key participants in this pioneering peacekeeping experience. In the last chapter, recommendations are made –based on all the elements covered in the research- to suggest contributions to the evolving UN ground rules for international crisis intervention and management. / Graduate / hilmyh@uvic.ca
