As práticas de leitura literária de adolescentes e a escola: tensões e influências / Literary reading practices by adolescents and the school

Oliveira, Gabriela Rodella de 08 October 2013 (has links)
This dissertation aims at describing, analyzing and interpreting the literary reading practices by adolescents that are registered in schools. Therefore, an exploratory research was conducted with students from the first year of Ensino Médio High School in four schools in São Paulo, two at the public system and two private, three of them in the capital and one in the metropolitan area of São Paulo. The data collection was conducted in the schools during the second semester of 2011 and it was arranged through open-ended and closed questionnaires answered by 289 students and interviews made with 63 of those students including approximately five hours of recordings. The data analysis shows: 1) the strong appeal of mass culture present in the best-sellers in which adolescents from all social extracts choose to read on their own; 2) the existing tension between the students and the required reads demanded by the school caused by the obligation, the linguistic and comprehension difficulties and the deadlines and evaluations implied by these reading; 3) the disregard from the school agents of the readings made by the students; 4) the need of an adequate mediation for the reading of the required books for the students; 5) the influence of the socioeconomic level and the students families backgrounds regarding the spaces and time available for the practice of reading and access both as for the book as an object in general and as for what is considered legitimate literature inside the literary field. It is observed, thus, the way in which the school interferes in the training of readers, making it possible to see ways for the teaching of literary reading for the adolescents today. The analysis of the data related to what keeps the teenagers reading on their own and to what distances them from reading the school classics was carried out in the light of the concepts of social psychology (S. Moscovici); cultural history of the book and reading (R. Chartier); sociology of reading (P. Bourdieu, B. Lahire, C. Baudelot, M. Cartier and C. Detrez); literary criticism (H. R. Jauss, W. Iser, U. A intenção do estudo literário em sala de aula tem objetivo pedagógico, de incentivar e estabelecer elementos reflexivos dos discentes com relação ao seu cotidiano.

Kanonlärare : En undersökning av svensklärares litteratururval / A shot at canon : A study of the literature selection in Swedish upper secondary schools

Andersson, Anna, Odehammar, Carl Johan January 2010 (has links)
This is a study on the literature selection that Swedish upper secondary school teachers use when teaching Swedish, and the underlying motives and factors contributing to the selection of certain literature. Two questions form the basis for the study:Is there an implicit canon in the teaching of Swedish in upper secondary school, and if so what literature does it consist of? Against what background and knowledge do teachers select the literature they use in their teaching? To answer the two questions, a qualitative questionnaire study answered by 14 upper secondary school teachers of Swedish has been performed. The results show that the selections of litera- ture teachers make have connections to a literary canon. The similarities are greater between the authors teachers use than between the works they use by these same authors. The literature that is taught in school can be said to reflect a male, white and western perspective. The most common reason why a certain work has been selected is that the work is part of the cultural history and heritage and also part of the basic general knowledge. When teachers make their selection they are affected by things in their near surroundings like colleagues, the book selection of the school, students, curricula and to a lesser extent their own interests. A literary canon, textbooks and education have had a great impact historically on the literature taught in school, but nowadays teachers believe themselves less influenced by these things.

Läsintresset, hur står det till med det egentligen? : En undersökning om läsvanor och läsintresse på en högstadieskola

Ström, Katarina January 2018 (has links)
This study aims to investigate the interest of reading and which factors that affect reading among students in grade nine in a Swedish school. The study also aims at finding out how teachers at the same school work with the skill of reading. How the teachers define the terms interest of reading and pleasure of reading will also be defined. The methods used are a quantitative method through surveys as well as a qualitative method with interviews of the teachers. The results of the study show that a majority of the students do not enjoy reading at all and when they read their reading is mostly from electronic sources such as websites and blogs. The teachers who were interviewed all have noticed a decrease in the interest of reading among students and they use a variety of methods to increase the interest of reading among their students.

Learning to Read at the Upper Secondary Level : A Mixed-Method Study of Teachers’ Use of Literature to Enhance Reading Comprehension in the Upper Secondary EFL Classroom in Sweden

Haidar, Maha January 2022 (has links)
This study aims to explore the use of literature to enhance students’ reading comprehension abilities in the upper secondary EFL classroom in Sweden. The study uses a mixed method of teacher survey and teacher interviews to answer the three research questions: (1) How often do teachers use literature to enhance students’ reading comprehension abilities? (2) What kinds of literature are used when the purpose is to enhance students’ reading comprehension abilities? And (3) How do EFL teachers teach literature when the purpose is to enhance students’ reading comprehension abilities? The study finds that upper secondary school teachers in Sweden use literature in various ways to enhance students’ reading comprehension abilities. To achieve this purpose, teachers mainly use short stories, novels, poetry, young adult novels, plays, and children’s books.  The study also finds that intensive reading approaches are more commonly used than extensive reading approaches in Swedish classrooms and teachers use a wide range of reading comprehension strategies to help their students comprehend the text. Additionally, teachers’ use of reading strategies varies according to the text at hand and the purpose of reading. Furthermore, upper secondary school teachers use both explicit strategy instruction and activities that allow the students opportunities to practice reading strategies, and they also teach the students how different reading strategies are used for different purposes.

“IN THAT CASE I CHOOSE TO WORK WITH SHORT STORIES” : A study about how English short stories are taught by nine upper secondary school teachers in Sweden and said teachers’ attitudes towards short stories

Engwers, Anton January 2020 (has links)
Reading English literature can help learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) to develop their reading ability as well as other language skills. Reading can also have other benefits for EFL students such as learning about the target language’s culture or an English variety in written form. This present study investigates what types of literature are used in Swedish upper secondary school, the EFL teachers’ attitudes towards short stories compared to simplified novels/graded readers and their preferred assessment methods associated with literature teaching. The majority of the teachers that took part in this survey have a positive attitude towards short stories and use them in their EFL classes. The results also show that after the students have completed reading a short story, most of the teachers that participated in this survey preferred to combine examination methods such as a group discussion with a written test. The title of this paper comes from one of the informants’ comments when asked if she would rather use a short story or a graded reader in her English class. This informant had used graded readers in her English language classroom, but she and everyone that took part in this survey chose short stories over graded readers.
