Since discipline was born, strategy presents as its central characteristics the creation, the use and difusion of models that help to build and keep the major company’s strategist authority and the strong basement in economic theories and in the autonomous entity paradigm. Within its theoretical scenario, prevail the anglo american theories produced, the prescription of universal strategic models and the lack of theoretical and conceptual deepness that enables to better comprehend the network phenomenon. This dominant theoretical framework within the discipline gives more relevance and focus to the market thesis, that reproduces the neoliberalism principles and marginalizes the other market theories also important for the comprehension of the organizations and network performance. Some examples of marginal theories are those who address the recognizing of power, politics, market, State and society interfaces. Specially in emergent and transition economies, as Brasil and Portugal respectively, these marginal theories reveal the recognizing of non-market strategies are as important as market strategies. Considering the present relevance of operations involving the hybrid organizations Petrobras and Galp, in special in the Brazilian and Portuguese oil industries, through a case study this dissertation aims to identify how and why hybrid organizations networks are formed in the Brazilian-Portuguese oil industry and how market and non-market strategies interact in among these networks.

The Use of Mediation and Mediative Elements to Improve the Integration of the Human Factor in Risk Assessments in Order to Enhance the Safety in the International Oil and Gas Industry / Die Anwendung der Mediation und mediativer Elemente zur besseren Einbeziehung des Faktors „Mensch“ in die Risikobeurteilung zur Erhöhung der Sicherheit in der internationalen Öl- und Gasindustrie

Kinzel, Holger 19 July 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The work of an engineer is closely intertwined with safety. An engineer’s perception of the “safety” task is traditionally inherent in his or her design. However, in the technical world most machines and systems designed by engineers contain a human element, which engineers have to consider in their work. In the oil and gas upstream industry – especially drilling, production and workover operations – petroleum engineers (including drilling and production engineers) are responsible not only for design but also for operational and organizational aspects. The human factor becomes more important in complex offshore operations. Incorporating safety into a sys-tem design requires identifying, analyzing and evaluating risks and ensuring that any not accounted for are taken into consideration. This process requires communication among everyone involved in the process. Analysis of accidents in the oil and gas industry shows that often a lack of that communication led to incident triggering events. In this thesis, the author proposes a novel communication model that improves this exchange of information and supposedly makes the process of risk assessment more effective. In addition, the new model also incorporates factors such as emotions, feelings, needs and imagination into the risk assessment process. This broadens the information base for the risk identification and analysis and creates an atmosphere of psychological ownership for the stakeholders in the process, which leads to a perceived safety climate in the organization where the new model is applied. The innovative communication or consultation model, as it is also referred to in risk assessments, is based on a structured process used in conflict resolution called mediation. Mediation is an alternative conflict resolution process that is centered on mutual under-standing and listening to each other’s needs. The process is composed of elements that characterize it. These elements of mediation are used to assess other communication processes and to develop new communication models. The application of the elements of mediation and the safety-mediation consultation into the risk assessment process enables this process to be enhanced with human factors such as emotions, feelings, intuition and imagination. The inclusion of all stakeholders creates psychological ownership, improves communication, enables organizational learning and expands the knowledge base for risk analysis. The applicability of the safety-mediation consultation process for a human factor-based risk assessment is presented and tested using illustrative examples and field cases from the international oil and gas industry. Possible concerns and limitations are also discussed. This thesis shows that mediation and elements of the mediation process can be applied to improve communication in the international oil and gas industry. This is facilitated by educated safety mediators, who help the petroleum engineer and operational crew on a drilling rig to achieve a better understanding by ensuring that they hear and fully register each other’s needs.

Lanthanides and time-resolved fluorescence based technologies for chemicals quantification and tagging in oil industry / Quantification et marquage des produits chimiques dans l'industrie pétrolière par fluorescence résolue en temps des ions lanthanides

Lai, Thi Thanh Huong 26 September 2019 (has links)
The application of photoluminescence is receiving an increasing interest from researchers coming from many fields. The previous laboratory works introduced a time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) detection method for the quantification of chemicals in complex medium (petroleum, production brine, and synthetic sea water) tagged with lanthanides, the additives form complexes that exhibit specific TRF signal which overcomes autofluorescence of sample and provide a high signal to noise ratio. The subject of this thesis concerns the development of specific methods based on patented technique to answer problematics arising in the oil industry from the extraction of crude product to the distribution of fuels. In the first part of the document, we focus on the monitoring of residual amount of chemical additives such as scale inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors, viscoelastic polymers in different synthetic and production waters. The impacts of some key factors were analyzed in order to improve the sensitivity and performance, also proves that under optimized conditions it is possible to quantify simultaneously two products in the same matrix. We successfully quantified various types of chemical additives with satisfying precision. Furthermore, the matrix effect was controlled by the development of two standard addition strategies. In addition to the determination of the concentration of chemical additives, we will also introduce a method to determine the anionicity of a polymer in difficult conditions. In the second part of the manuscript we follow the development of lanthanide complex markers and their detection for anti-counterfeiting on different crude oils and refined fuels. The synthesis, incorporation process and stability of three types of photoluminescence markers in different fuels have been discussed. The obtained results will prove that the technology can be used to detect fraud on fuels. This work has a potential great impact for both the academic and industrial domains. All studies focus on the creation of a simple procedure, with high sensitivity and low cost. All method are relying in the end on a specific field apparatus developed during my thesis to support the exportation of the technologies from the laboratory to the industry: The Inibox™

Sánchez Arévalo, Carmen María 20 October 2023 (has links)
[EN] The agri-food sector is one of the industries with higher international relevance. During olive oil production, large volumes of by-products are generated. Among them, the wet olive pomace stands out. It contains all the olive components remaining after the olive oil extraction. This by-product has a high organic load, which may represent an environmental risk if it is not properly disposed. On the other side, the wet olive pomace is rich in phenolic compounds, which have high industrial interest due to their antioxidant properties. This content in bioactive compounds represents an excellent opportunity to valorize the wet olive pomace, recovering compounds of interest and reducing the contaminant load of the residue. In this Doctoral Thesis, this challenge has been addressed, in the framework of Membrane Technology. First, an ultrasound-assisted solid-liquid extraction was optimized to extract the phenolic compounds from wet olive pomace. Satisfactory results were obtained, both with mixtures of ethanol/water and with pure water. Furthermore, a detailed characterization of the metabolites present in the extracts derived from wet olive pomace was conducted. More than 50 compounds were determined. During the following stages, both the extracts obtained with ethanol/water 50:50 (v/v) and the aqueous extracts were considered. The aqueous extracts were treated by ultrafiltration, selecting the UP005 and UH030 membranes, due to their suitable productivity and efficacy, in terms of the rejection of the chemical oxygen demand. The phenolic compounds were recovered at a higher purity in the permeate. Afterwards, the ultrafiltration permeate was treated by nanofiltration, employing the NF270 membrane (DuPont), in order to concentrate the previously purified phenolic compounds. Moreover, the feasibility of the NF270 membrane to separate low-molecular-weight phenolic compounds from sugars was demonstrated. To that end, simulated solutions, with a composition based on olive mill wastewaters, were employed. The hydroalcoholic extracts of wet olive pomace were also treated by membrane processes. Previously, an exhaustive review of the scientific literature related to organic-solvent ultrafiltration was addressed. Later, it was evaluated an ultrafiltration process to purify the wet olive pomace extracts prepared with ethanol/water 50:50 (v/v). Satisfactory results were obtained, regarding the membranes stability (UF010104 and UF010801v3, from the manufacturer SolSep BV, and UP005, from Microdyn Nadir) and the recovery of phenolic compounds. These molecules were obtained in the permeate stream. To increase the purity of the phenolic compounds and address their fractionation, an organic-solvent nanofiltration process was studied. A simulated solution, whose solvent was ethanol/water 50:50 (v/v), was employed. The composition of this solution was based on the UP005 permeate obtained in organic media. Among all the evaluated membranes, the NF270 membrane stood out due to the high permeate flux. Furthermore, this membrane properly rejected the unwanted compounds, such as sugars and acids. This allowed the satisfactory recovery of phenolic compounds in the permeate stream, after their purification and fractionation. Considering these results, an integrated process was proposed. It was based on the extraction of the compounds of interest with ethanol/water 50:50 (v/v), and a further ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis process. The ultrafiltration of the extract was performed with the UP005 membrane to conduct its purification. Then, the UP005 permeate was nanofiltered, employing the NF270 membrane to enhance the purity of the phenolic compounds and fractionate them. Finally, the NF270 permeate was concentrated by means of a reverse osmosis process, employing the NF90 membrane (DuPont), which suitably rejected the phenolic compounds. / Sánchez Arévalo, CM. L’usage de la responsabilité sociale de l’entreprise en temps de crise : le cas d’entreprises française et brésilienne dans le secteur pétrolier / The use of corporate social responsability in times of crisis : the cases of a French and Brazilian oil compagny

Pereira Pündrich, Aline 26 September 2013 (has links)
As well as crises, corporate social responsibility (CSR) concerns complex fields, such as environmental protection, human resources management, safety at work and the relationship with local communities. At a moment of crisis, ethical and critical elements often place the enterprise as guilty and its stakeholders as victims. Such an approach may be exceeded, since when the enterprise begins its actions to manage the crisis, the decisions taken could show its commitment to social concerns, having an important impact on the critical situation. Considering these challenges, this study aims to explore organizational crisis as a motivation for the development of CSR within enterprises. The purpose of this research is to observe how CSR practices can be employed during critical times, taking into account the pressure stakeholders exert on the enterprise. In order to reach this goal, two oil companies are analyzed: Total and Petrobras; the former being a French group and the later a Brazilian company. Through a qualitative approach, a database was built using information from the press. This database, allied with a conceptual framework, allowed to analyze the tactical choices used by Total and Petrobras to react to certain crises in what concerns their CSR practices. Such decisions were examined through a political, cultural and temporal context bearing in mind the role of stakeholders. The result of this research is the identification of, five mechanisms elaborated by the enterprises to act in response to stakeholders’ pressure in times of crisis.

Étude multi-échelles des courbes de désaturation capillaire par tomographie RX / Multi-scales investigation of capillary desaturation curves using X-ray tomography.

Oughanem, Rezki 20 December 2013 (has links)
Oil recovery by surfactant injection is related to oil-water interfacial tension and rock properties through the capillary number. In the modeling of oil recovery by surfactant injection, fluid flow physical mechanisms are represented through the capillary desaturation curve (CDC). This curve is central in the evaluation of oil recovery efficiency. In order to mobilize residual oil trapped after waterflooding by capillary forces, chemical EOR rely on increasing capillary number to extremely high values. The mechanisms governing oil release can be described at the pore scale where the balance of capillary and viscous forces is achieved. This description will help to predict the efficiency of surfactant based EOR processes by taking into account the porous geometry and topology, the physico-chemical properties of the fluids and the different phase interaction. The objective of this work is to characterize capillary desaturation curves for various strongly water-wet sandstones. These curves will be used to study the relationship between tertiary oil recovery and the pore structure, porous media heterogeneity and petrophysicals properties. The other aim of this work is to map the different mechanisms of oil recovery by surfactant injection. Experiments under X-Ray tomography are proposed. X-Ray tomography will be applied to characterize capillary desaturation curve at Darcy scale and to visualise the two phase flow saturation after injection. Pore scale experiments based on X-Ray micro-tomography imaging are performed to describe the different mechanisms of oil mobilization.

Optimization of production allocation under price uncertainty : relating price model assumptions to decisions

Bukhari, Abdulwahab Abdullatif 05 October 2011 (has links)
Allocating production volumes across a portfolio of producing assets is a complex optimization problem. Each producing asset possesses different technical attributes (e.g. crude type), facility constraints, and costs. In addition, there are corporate objectives and constraints (e.g. contract delivery requirements). While complex, such a problem can be specified and solved using conventional deterministic optimization methods. However, there is often uncertainty in many of the inputs, and in these cases the appropriate approach is neither obvious nor straightforward. One of the major uncertainties in the oil and gas industry is the commodity price assumption(s). This paper investigates this problem in three major sections: (1) We specify an integrated stochastic optimization model that solves for the optimal production allocation for a portfolio of producing assets when there is uncertainty in commodity prices, (2) We then compare the solutions that result when different price models are used, and (3) We perform a value of information analysis to estimate the value of more accurate price models. The results show that the optimum production allocation is a function of the price model assumptions. However, the differences between models are minor, and thus the value of choosing the “correct” price model, or similarly of estimating a more accurate model, is small. This work falls in the emerging research area of decision-oriented assessments of information value. / text

This work was conceived from the discussion about the main opportunities for the integrated approach of Public Health and Environment, considering the current world energy scenario, the introduction of new production technologies and the need for a more comprehensive conceptual reference among Health, Environment, Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development. Considering the several challenges for effective management of the environmental and health impacts, particularly caused by oil industry, strategic for the development and economical growth of our country, the main objective of this thesis is discuss how the health aspects could be incorporated to the environmental licensing of this sector. An exploratory methodological approach was used, starting from an exhausting bibliographical research in scientific and institutional literature, produced by companies and government areas related with the environmental licenses. The health evidences and opportunities in the main official documents, particularly studies and reports of the environmental impacts (EIA/RIMA, in portuguese) of national enterprises of oil exploration, production and refining, was evaluated. An adapted matrix, validated for the hydroelectric sector, was used like a tool for assessment of health subjects in the selected RIMA. The analytical categories of this matrix were based on the established parameters for the studies of environmental impact assessment of CONAMA Resolution 1/86, and on the main aspects of Health Impact Assessment (HIA) methodology. As result, this matrix was considered like an important instrument with great potential to guide the incorporation of the health aspects in the environmental licensing, supporting the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and decision makers, contributing to a proactive social and environmental management of the petroleum industry.
