”…if I´m gonna grab the Glock or the homework when I get out we will see”

Pentikäinen, Vilma January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to highlight the opinions and perceptions of young people who are receiving care provided by the Swedish National Board of Institutional Care. The focus is on examining the backgrounds of these young people, their perceptions of compulsory care, and identifying and interpreting internal and external motivational forces for life change among the youth. To capture the youths' own experiences and opinions about compulsory care, a qualitative research method with a deductive approach based on the motivational theories of Self-Determination Theory and Hope Theory was chosen. The empirical material consists of youths' self-written texts from two books, where the youths describe their lives before and during the compulsory care as well as their thoughts about the future. The material is analyzed through a thematic text analysis. The thematic analysis resulted in five main themes: fragmented childhoods, from resistance to insight, freedom and rebuilding, selfless change, and navigating through unknown terrain. The results showed that the youths have experienced broken upbringing conditions and that supportive individuals in their surroundings are of great importance, especially their mothers. Furthermore, the results revealed a mixed perception of compulsory care where most describe initial skepticism towards the care but eventually come to realize their issues and need for treatment. Regarding the youths' motivation for change, several internal and external motivational factors were identified, with autonomy and freedom, as well as avoidance of punishment, being the most prominent. Recurrent in the results regarding the youths' future was that they expressed hope for the future but also described a fear of reverting to destructive patterns and thus a lack of belief in their ability to change their lives. The results are analyzed based on previous research and the theoretical framework.

Frigjord tid till förmån för ökade sociala kontakter : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om differentiering av arbetsuppgifter på ett särskilt boende för äldre / Freed up time for increased social interactions : A qualitative interview study on task differention in a retirement home för eldery

Iddh, Minabell, Håkansson, Edith January 2024 (has links)
This study is based on a total of eight individual interviews with nursing assistants, service personnel, unit manager and head of social services in the organization. The purpose is to increase understanding of how management and staff perceive the recently implemented task differentiation at a selected retirement home for elderly. The results present a thematic analysis on the following themes: task differentiation – from motive to increased status, liberated time for better or worse, and increased social contacts. Under the theme of task differentiation – from motive to increased status, the motives for the approach are presented along with a description of what it entails in practice. Under the theme of liberated time for better or worse, what the liberated time has been used for and its consequences are presented. Under the theme of increased social contacts, developed social relationships between the elderly and the staff at the retirement home and its consequences for the elderly are presented. The results are then analysed using organizational theoretical concepts belonging to the instrumental perspective on organizations. The conclusion is that the management and staff have acted in a rationally way in relation to the goals of the organization. Task differentiation is described in various ways by the interviewees depending on their positions and roles in the organization. Based on the division of labour and the changed routines in the organization the nursing assistants describe freed-up time, reduced stress, and, together with the service staff, also increased social contacts with the elderly.

Political Perspectives on Street Gangs in Finland : Thematic analysis of Parliamentary debate

Finér, Jenni January 2024 (has links)
The first accurate observations of street gangs in Finland were made by the police in 2021. Currently, the Police of Finland have identified 350 individuals who are involved in street gangs with 150 individuals having a central role in the gangs. The emergence of street gangs has led to intensified debate in relation to the issue. Discussion and debate have also emerged within the realm of politics, as violence by street gangs has been considered to be a threat to public safety. The aim of this study was to explore how the issue of street gangs is discussed in the debate by the Parliament of Finland. The material is from the years 2021 – 2023 and consists of written questions and oral questions by politicians, as well as an interpellation. The material from the Parliament was analyzed using thematic analysis to be able to identify central themes in the debate. The key findings are that the politicians in Finland acknowledge that the issue has escalated, and action must be taken to prevent further escalation. Causes of the problem as well as possible measures for the purpose of prevention are also discussed. Comprehensive welfare is considered to be the cornerstone of criminal policy in Finland, as it is expected to result in decreasing crime rates. Results of this study, however, indicate that the debate around street gangs in Finland is to some extent led by ideological perceptions. Polarization of the perception of "us" and "them" seems to be particularly prominent within parliamentary debate concerning street gangs in Finland.

Blad, Sofia, Bennhage, Matilda January 2024 (has links)
The unacceptable violence: A thematic content analysis of the Swedish parliamentary parties' portrayal of domestic violence. The purpose of this thesis was to examine how the parties in the Swedish parliament depicts domestic violence and list common denominators through thematic analysis. Both feminist criminology and victimological concepts were used as theoretical frameworks. The results show that domestic violence, explained as a subcategory to male violence against women, is presented through perspectives of equality, gendered power, human rights, honor violence and cultural norms. The importance of an empowered victim perspective, often at the expense of the offenders, permeates the parties' depictions even though there are differences in their understandings and action proposals. Furthermore, there is an emphasis on the need to elevate competence levels across all community agencies that may interact with victims. Lastly, it is concluded that there is a lack of understanding in politics regarding the causes and mechanisms of domestic violence, as well as limited proposals for its prevention.

Resistance beyond borders : Eye-Witness Accounts from Young Palestinian Journalists and Global Perception of the Current Palestinian Genocide Through Social Media

Avelar, Beatriz January 2024 (has links)
After the attacks by Hamas on Israel on October 7th and the offensive on Palestine that followed, a group of young Palestinians have taken the role of sharing witness of the ongoing genocide through social media. This thesis investigates how these citizen journalists are bearing witness to the ongoing genocide and how social media audiences are reacting to these images. By analyzing the discourses present in their posts through a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) and systematically observing the comments under said posts through a thematic analysis, this thesis demonstrates that there is a relation between shared discourses and audience reactions. The study argues that vulnerability is being used as an act of resistance, and that discourses involving vulnerability and eye-witnessing are common in these posts and inspire emotional reactions and sentiments of resistance in the audiences, and further demonstrates how the analyzed citizen journalists seem to share similar discourses and feelings while using several modes of address in variating ways from post to post. All these findings show that the current Palestinian conflict may be contributing to changes in the ways war and conflicts are mediatized due to their use of social media to create a more connective citizen journalism where audiences become closer with the distant suffering.

Is it a scandal that around 8 million Roma fall just outside the healthcare system? : A qualitative study exploring access to the health insurance and health care for Roma staying in Sweden

Tsekhmestruk, Nataliia January 2019 (has links)
Introduction: The Roma is the largest ethnic minority in Europe, estimated to be over 11 million (1.35% of Europe’s total population). At the same time, it is the most vulnerable and marginalized community, facing many challenges in everyday life, such as low levels of education, unemployment, poverty, limited access to information, social and health services as well as racial discrimination. Roma people have great health needs and lack access to the European Health Insurance scheme. Efforts by governments across Europe to address these health inequities have been relatively weak and Roma suffer poorer access to health care, health insurance, education and employment in every country that they inhabit in comparison to the majority population. There are studies exploring the health situation of the Roma, but very limited information is available about the availability of the European Health Insurance for Roma and access to health care in Sweden. The general aim of this study is to explore access to the health insurance and health care for Roma staying in Sweden. Methods: A qualitative design methodology has been applied in this thesis. Four non-government organizations in Sweden were contacted and six in-depth interviews were done with professionals and volunteers from those organizations. Questions were asked about experience of working/volunteering and assisting Roma people in accessing health care in Sweden. The interviews also addressed barriers faced by Roma to obtain the European Health Insurance in Romania. The data was analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Four themes were developed during the data analysis. The first theme “A bureaucratic and unfriendly system makes it hard for Roma to get insured in Romania” is about the role of the Romanian government in maintaining the (disadvantaged) situation of Roma people. The second theme “Difficult to access the health care services in Sweden, without active European Health Insurance” explains the situation of Roma people, when they seek medical care in Sweden and the importance of having an active European Health Insurance. The third theme “European Union policies do not respond to the health care needs of Roma” elaborates on the governance of the whole health insurance scheme from the EU level and how it is not designed to fit the needs of the Roma. The fourth theme “The history of racism and discrimination of Roma is the root of this situation” is about how society perceives Roma people and how they have been treated for a long time as slaves, with labels including discrimination and racism. Conclusion: This study highlights that access to health care for Romanian Roma people staying in Sweden cannot be seen as a separate issue from that of the situation of access to the health insurance scheme - the National Health Insurance and the European Health Insurance - for Roma in Romania. The study highlights that access to health care and the European Health Insurance for Roma in Romania is often determined by the (dis)functionality of the health system in Romania, corruption and bureaucracy. Without an active European Health Insurance, Roma cannot access health care in Sweden. As an additional burden, they are requested to prove that they can access health care as undocumented people. European Union regulations and laws make it difficult for people who do not have official work to obtain European Health Insurance. The history of racism and discrimination is, potentially the root of the situation. Even today Roma are judged with prejudices, stereotypes and pre-existing beliefs that makes access the health insurance and health care for Roma staying in Sweden even more difficult.

Mer än råd och service : En tematisk analys om kuratorers arbetsroll vid postpartum depression / More than advice and service : A thematic analysis of the role of social workers in postpartum depression

Strandberg, Maja, Strandberg, Gabriella January 2024 (has links)
Postpartum depression affects many new mothers and can affect both her own well-being and the relationship with the baby. To get support during pregnancy and after childbirth, the woman can turn to Family Centers, which are a meeting place for several professionals where they offer support together. For that reason, the interest was raised to investigate counselors experience with postpartum depression. The purpose of the study was to explore the role of Family center counselors in working with postpartum depression. The study's material has been collected through six semi-structured interviews with counselors at the Family Center. The interview material has then been analyzed through a thematic analysis inspired by role theory. The results revealed the specific roles that the counselors assume while working with individuals experiencing postpartum depression. The thematic analysis resulted in the following themes which together reflect how the counselors perceive their work role: the preventer, the interceptor, the supporter and the listener. The role as the preventer means that they work preventively with parent groups but also in individual conversations with clients. The counselors assume a role where they are catchers during home visits and "catch" those who otherwise risk going untreated. When it comes to the role of the supporter, much of it revolves around the power of storytelling, with supportive conversation playing a central role. In their role as the listener, much of the role consists of their freedom from documentation and records, which makes the client safe to open up about their distress.

Digital arbetsmiljö – möjligheter och utmaningar för en god arbetshälsa : En kvalitativ studie om universitetsanställda forskares erfarenheter av digital arbetsmiljö / Digital Work Environment – opportunities and challenges for good occupational health : A qualitative study on university researchers' experiences of the digital work environment

Krantz, Sara January 2024 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine experiences of opportunities and challenges in a digital work environment for researchers within academia Method: A qualitative study was performed, based on 13 semi-structured interviews with eight female and five male university researchers. A reflexive thematic analysis method was used to examine meaningful patterns within the group of researchers, thereby enhancing the understanding of the digital work environment in academia. Main results: Three main themes and eight sub-themes were identified. The three primary themes were: navigating a boundaryless work environment, interacting through digital communication, and enhancing technical conditions in work. The results show that the themes and sub-themes describe various aspects of opportunities and challenges that the informants experienced in their digital work environment. Conclusion: University researchers experience a digital paradox between the flexibility of work and recovery, and the demands of digital availability, challenges with high workload, and boundary setting. The results of this study can provide an understanding of how individuals perceive their digital work environment, which can promote increased awareness within workgroups and organizations about the opportunities and challenges that can promote or hinder a good occupational health.

Sports coaching as an ecology of ideas

Muller, Gene 01 1900 (has links)
In this study an ecosystematic approach to sports coaching is forwarded. This approach is illustrated using the analogy of an ecology of ideas. Ideas informing the life span of a coach within an elite team are explored. The researcher engaged four subjects in conversations the life span of a coach in an elite team. these conversations are viewed as co-constructions of realities. The coach abides within a team for a limited time. he or she enters an existing ecology of ideas, which can contribute to, or detract from, the efficacy of the coach in a team. This ecology of ideas evolves as aold meanings shift and new meanings emerge. These menings are explored in this disertation. An awareness of the ecology of ideas within a team can inform the coach to perturb the ecology of ideas in a direction that is mutually qualified as successful / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical psychology)

The influence of the mother-child relationship on the development of resilience in the learning disabled child

Leigh, Amanda Jane 31 August 2007 (has links)
Exploring the resilience construct is highly relevant for the field of learning disabilities. Resilience is a dynamic process of adaptation that involves interactions between a range of risk and protective factors. This research presents recent learning disability and resilience literature, focussing on the risk and protective factors in the lives of those with learning difficulties. Children with a learning disability often have associated emotional, behavioural and social difficulties that may become major obstacles to positive future outcomes. Historically little attention has been paid to the experiences of mothers of children with a learning disability and how the mother-child relationship may or may not foster the development of resilience in the learning disabled child. This research explores the issue within a qualitative framework / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Guidance and Counselling)
