The Role of Ethics on Tourist Destination Image Formation : An Analysis of the French Student Travel Market / Le rôle de l’éthique sur les processus de formation de l’image d’une destination touristique : Une analyse d’un public étudiant voyageur français

McDonald, Jeanette 10 December 2015 (has links)
The tourism industry has proven to be an economic reliance in a global environment that is subject to macro influences that are difficult to manage and sustain. Alternative tourism, such as Ethical tourism, is seen to be a sustainable solution for an industry that holds much importance worldwide and for some countries, presents economic survival. The aim of this research was to evaluate how the French student travel market perceive the role of ethics on tourist destination image formation and its influence on holiday choice. This was primarily achieved by adopting a constructivist and qualitative approach that allowed for rich knowledge of contribution to be transferred to several academic disciplines and provided managerial implications for the tourism industry. Findings show that although an ethical tourist destination image is principally influenced by social and environmental impacts, there are also managerial considerations that derive from the economic and political implications that come from tourism and tourist activity. These considerations will be key when developing future tourism products for a target market who are the future visitors of an ever increasing accessible global environment.

Tourism Development and the Question of 'Stasis': A Case Study of Internal Leisure Travel in Gabon

Cloquet, Isabelle 15 October 2015 (has links)
The thesis looks into the under-researched phenomenon of ‘stasis’ that can be observed in many emerging tourist destinations in the world. Stasis—defined here as non-growth—has been essentially addressed in the tourism literature from the perspective of operational constraints. However, in this thesis it is argued that such an approach neglects to consider these constraints as outcomes of deeply sedimented and chronically reproduced structural properties. In other words, the study attempts to gain an understanding of why operational constraints fail to receive response in destinations experiencing stasis. With its focus on stasis rather than on change, the study adopts an innovative approach to tourism development, intending in this way to add to destination development theories.Accordingly, the examination of the research problem is integrated into the general reflection on the development of tourist areas, composing the theoretical background of the study. Moreover, two important methodological decisions are made with the aim to better grasp the dynamics of tourism development within stasis. A first decision is to dissociate the quantitative aspects of destination development from the qualitative ones, introducing two distinctive constructs named destination growth and destination shaping. A second decision is to address the research question from a strategic relational approach to structure and agency. The use of a structure-agency approach is decisive in appraising the extent to which structural constraints affect tourism stakeholders’ actions. The phenomenon is explored empirically from a critical theory perspective and a qualitative approach based on a single case study. The case under scrutiny is Gabon, a politically stable destination with acknowledged tourism assets and a tourism strategy adopted in the past decade. Gabon is examined essentially for its function as internal leisure travel destination. The analysis thus includes both domestic and international tourism, but limits itself to leisure travel. The study results indicate that, in the case of Gabon, structural properties and their rigidity explained a great deal of operational constraints and their continuity over time. However, and while structural properties adversely affect destination development, including growth, tourism initiatives are still able to emerge. These tourism initiatives are varied in that they are undertaken by different types of actors, they have different goals and take different forms. Yet, very few of these tourism stakeholders are in a position to modify the country’s structural properties due to a high centrality of social control. In such context, destination growth is primarily determined by the vested interest of a small circle of agents with social power. In conclusion, a country’s structural properties need to be regarded as spatialized and temporalized tendencies having a selective effect on actors but cannot fully explain action, hence destination development. In turn, action is intended—and strategic—but results do not necessarily match initial intentions. This implies that tourism development cannot be apprehended through the sole actions of tourism stakeholders, but need a combined analysis of the interrelationships between structure and agency. / Doctorat en Sciences / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Relações entre imagem de cidade-sede e de destino-mãe: um estudo dos Jogos Olímpicos de 2016 no Brasil / Relations between image of host city and the mother-destination: a study of the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil

Luciana Brandão Ferreira 25 September 2018 (has links)
A sport mega event can modify a country\'s scenery and influence its image as a tourist destination, as well as the host city image. Sports mega events such as the Olympic Games involve a series of changes: social, financial and infrastructure investments and a greater international visibility. The host city image evaluation can have an impact on the destination image to which it belongs (reciprocal effect). Based on this assumption and the importance of tourism activity in the world and Brazilian economies and the relationship between sport mega events and the warming of this activity, the objective of this thesis was to verify the image reciprocal effects between a sport mega event host city and the national tourist destination (mother-destination). The focus was the 2016 Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro- Brazil. Descriptive/quantitative research was performed with foreigners from 48 countries (n = 340) using structured questionnaires and a Likert seven-point scale. The scale was adapted based on the cognitive and affective destination image dimensions, having as moderating variables: familiarity and the animosity with the mother-destination and games involvement. For data analysis, PLS structural equations modeling was performed using the software SmartPLS 3. The results pointed to positive evaluations of Rio and Brazil destination images, identifying the cognitive dimension as the most relevant. A positive and strong reciprocal effect was confirmed between the images of Rio as the 2016 Olympics host city and Brazil as the mother-destination. However, no moderation effects were found and in the specific case of animosity, there was no presence of this variable related to Brazil, which was a good result. This work brings theoretical contributions because it studies the reciprocal effects in destination images, considering the context of a sport mega event, as well as practical contributions for the development of more integrative tourism policies between mother-destination, cities / regions and for the hosting of new major events.

We understand that cities are chosen as tourist destinations beyond its cartographic localization, from other dimensions of meanings that, in its set, constitute images. These images are, probably, very different of the images constructed by native and resident populations, who possess relations of identity with the place. The knowledge of the meanings that others attribute to this city as tourist destination, bring us near to the symbolic bonds established by individuals or social groups on the act of their choices, as well as bring us near to the interaction process city-tourists where the expectations are confirmed or not. The images divulgated by the media also participate of the complex formation of the tourist image that is being constructed and available for the different public, in different social contexts. The tourism constitutes a symbolic asset of the modern society, being considered by the studious, as one of the most expressive phenomena of the modernity, for involving each year displacement and the interaction of thousand of people of different cultures in the entire world. All this people s mobilization points to practical social related to personal motivations, to the entailed desired to the idea to travel and to exceed borders. It is already consensus that tourism is a phenomenon of economic growth, generating jobs, income, professional, qualification, bringing improvements for the host cities. Since 1995, in Brazil, the tourism as a sector of the economy, passed to be considered one of the national priorities, and in this perspective, the national politics of the tourism invested in infrastructure of Brazilian cities with high tourist potential, objecting to increase the flows of Brazilian and foreign tourists. Owing to this fact, the country still invests in programs of tourist marketing, mainly divulging the images of the natural beauties of Brazil abroad. And for Brazilians, the campaigns appeal to rescue the feeling to be Brazilian, associating the idea to travel and know its country. Natal city possesses an excellent positioning in the tourist marketing, being predominantly divulgated in national and international level, for its naturalistic singularity, where the images of its natural enchantments as warm water beaches, white dunes, warm weather, constant breeze and an always blue sky are shown as the favorite scene on this city. From what was viewed above that the choice of a tourist destination articulates from a determined imaginary of a place, already constructed or in process of construction, we consider the knowledge of this imaginary a basic learning for the population of the city and especially, for educators, in the formation of professionals in this area and for tourism managers, elaborators of public politics. Based on this estimative, we developed this research that had as a general objective to identify the images that illustrate Natal city as a tourist destination - our objective of study, particularly the meanings and senses attributed by the tourist marketing (hotel s folders) and by the tourists that visited the city during this study. The discussions and reflections that had guided this research had been given from the theoretical link between imaginary and social representation, also considering some interfaces between the fields of communication and symbol. From the studied authors, Baczko (1985) clarifies that the study of social imaginary is directed for the mechanisms and structures of the social life, especially for the intervention accomplishes and efficient of the representations and symbols in the practical collectives, as well as in its direction and orientation . Following this same thought, Moscovici (1978) says that the social representation are produced in communicational and symbolic contexts, and these representations once that already constituted circulate socially as almost tangible entities. Based on this fundament and on the analyze of Barthes (1990), particularly in the approach given to the reading of photographic image, we could observe on hotel s folders that each page evidences senses and meanings of functionality of internal and external spaces, pointing to the way of leisure offered by the keepers of city which is the hotels. About, the leisure that they offer, it is directed to young public, giving meaning to the young myth of personalized leisure tourism on children, young and adults images. The image about security that hotels offer and the singular image of Natal city as a paradise place, provide an idealization of pleasure through the sun, dunes, and beaches and also due to the hospitability of the natives who are assigned as educated . For the tourist that participated on this research, Natal city is tied only by the imaginary of leisure and nature which constitute the emotional link of the relation media-city-tourist. And with such force and fullness of directions the city discloses without tensions and contradictions as a place protected by a mythical and sacred aura. The study also demonstrates us that the potiguar culture remains (almost) forgotten, due to the silenced in this imaginary. In this perspective, we highlight that this culture silence is very close related to the disvalue of education in its general meaning. We defend that the imaginary apprehended constitutes a new reading and a new looking and understanding the tourist reality that comes historically consolidating in this city. In this direction, we glimpse that this study and its future dismemberments can collaborate with the process of rescue the cultural values of the potiguar people, in the way that the meaning of tourist may be redefined, and the tourist image of the city can be also disclosed for its identities particularities of its culture / Esta tese ? resultado de uma pesquisa sobre Natal-RN como destino tur?stico.

Hassan, Maria, Hasan Ibrahim, Rosnani January 2016 (has links)
Today’s technology allows people to interact at a great distance that could not be imagined before. Through the technology, the media such as news channels and social media which allows people to interact as well as read and gather information from all over the world. For example, a person can gather information from the comfort of his own home, without having to experience it himself. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the media coverage affects and alters tourist’s attitudes and views of a tourist destination. The study has limited itself to the Greek Island of Lesvos and how its tourism has been affected by the media reports of the refugee movements. The authors of the study have applied a quantitative research method in the form of structured interviews. Secondary data have also been collected such as; news from social media, scientific articles, statistics, and facts from governmental organizations, in order to have a deeper understanding of the subject that is studied. The results of the structured interview showed that the majority of respondents gained their knowledge of the island Lesvos through media outlets.  Whilst the majority of those who participated expressed that they could not imagine traveling to the island of Lesvos in Greece for pleasure and relaxation. The study survey shows that the media coverage of the refugee tide and the island of Lesvos had a great influence among the respondents. Based on the information from the media outlet, the island was described as a refugee camp and the respondents traveling for relaxation and fun chose to avoid Lesvos as a tourist destination I conclusion; the study indicates that the majority of the Swedish tourists have a negative attitude and view towards Lesvos due to the coverage and information spread by the media. Furthermore, it is important to note that the attitudes and views of the tourists differ from each individual. This is because every individual receives and perceives the information differently, even though it may come from the same source.

Destinationsutveckling i samband med folkliga motionslopp / Destination development connected to popular running and ski races

Karlgren, Maria, Wingfors, Fabian January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study, written in Swedish, is to study two of the most popular sportsevents in Sweden; Vasaloppet and Göteborgsvarvet (Gothenburg Half Marathon) and theaffect the events has on the host destinations and also how the organizers use the destinationsfor their development. The study also shows how municipalities and public authorities connected to destinationdevelopment handles these events for their own purpose in their destination marketing todevelop their destination and improve the destination image. To achieve the purpose of the study, the following research questions has been formulated:“How does the municipality work with these events to improve the development of thedestination?” and “How does Vasaloppet and Göteborgsvarvet affect the destinations and howdoes the race events use their destination for their development?”Big events related to tourism is often organized by independent actors without any supportfrom the government controlled authorities. Despite that, the municipality or governmentcontrolled organizations will always have an an impact on these big events since they providethe essential infrastructure, transport, etc.One of the tools used in this study is semi structured interviews with 19 different, for thecases, relevant people, including the leaders within the organizing committees of Vasaloppetand Göteborgsvarvet. Interviews has also been made with the municipalities and otherpartners to the organizers. As a complement to these interviews, we have also interviewed afew participants from the two races. The study is also complemented with media articles andother previous research in the subject. The study identifies a strong dependency between the organizers and destinations that goesboth ways. The conclusion clearly shows the needs of cooperation and support between all theinvolved organizations to be able to achieve the best possible result and development. Thestudy reveals how all the involved organizations cooperates and works in relation to eachother and what could be done in other ways to optimize the best conditions for development.

Persson, Sebastian, Doan, Kyle January 2017 (has links)
In this essay, we focus on how Helsingborg uses its cultural part of the total tourism. Are there any sights or attractions that have something extra that makes a tourist wants to go to Helsingborg and visit them, and what's the traction forces that are behing? For a municipality, in our case Helsingborg will be able to attract tourists and visitors must be able to market themselves in a good way so the tourists know about what the municipality has to offer. In our previous research, there are both similarities and differences in how to work with culture as part of the tourism industry. The main similarity we have come to is that the history of all the sights and attractions are mainly highlighted and the difference is that you see their work processes in different ways in how to work with cultural tourism. All the places we've studied all have a well-functioning tourism in the whole of the factors mentioned in this essay, but it comes to working well thought out with all the factors that may have an impact on how long you can be a destination or not.
