The aim of this dissertation is to examine how the lyrical subject is presented in Tomas Tranströmer’s poetry and prose.  Crucial concepts such as the lyrical subject, autobiography, and the memoir are thoroughly discussed and defined based on modern research. The first chapter is devoted entirely to Tranströmer’s prose. Unlike previous studies, this dissertation seeks to establish the genre to which the poet’s memoirs belong. The comparative analysis I use in my dissertation enables us to see both the differences and the similarities in the way that Tranströmer presents the lyrical subject in his prose and poetry. I have taken into account the motifs used by Tranströmer in his memoirs as well as in his poetry. The next chapter discusses the Swedish reception of modernism, a literary movement, which also according to Tranströmer himself, greatly influenced his literary debut in Sweden in the 1950s. The subsequent chapters of my dissertation are devoted to an analysis of Tomas Tranströmer’s poems, which I classify on the basis of how they express the lyrical subject. I analyze both the way the lyrical subject is expressed and its place in the poem. Even though Tomas Tranströmer often uses his own experiences in his works, he transforms them in order to make them more universal. Thus, the lyrical subject is not identical with the poet himself. At the same time, the way the lyrical subject is expressed in a poem highlights its personal character. In the conclusion of the dissertation it is argued that further research is needed to establish whether the selection of Tomas Tranströmer's poems made by the editors of various anthologies may have influenced the reception of his poetry as being objective and impersonal.

In dieser Arbeit wird untersucht, wie Verbalmetaphern in Gedichten von Tomas Tranströmer ins Deutsche übersetzt werden. Der Titel lautet "Verbalmetaphern in Tomas Tranströmers Lyrik - Eine Untersuchung zu Verbalmetaphern und ihrer Übersetzung ins Deutsche", und der Aufsatz behandelt demnach die Äquivalenz in Bezug auf die Übersetzungsresultate. Es wird untersucht, in welchem Ausmaß Verbalmetaphern aus dem Schwedischen ins Deutsche wortgetreu übersetz werden. Untersucht wird auch, ob die übersetzten Verbalmetaphern blasser als das Original der Ausgangssprache sind. Das Resultat der Studie zeigt, dass der gemeinsame Ursprung und die nahe Verwandtschaft zwischen der schwedischen und deutschen Sprache eine maximal äquivalente Übersetzung in Bezug auf formal-ästhetische Kriterien zum größten Teil möglich machen. Von 118 AS-Verbalmetaphern sind in dieser Untersuchung 88% der ZS-Übersetzungsresultate maximal äquivalent. Nur eine AS-Metapher wird nicht als Metapher in der Zielsprache übersetzt. Hier weicht das Resultat von anderen Untersuchungen ab. Die Erklärung dafür könnte sein, dass der Korpus dieser Untersuchung ausschließlich Gedichte umfasst, während andere Untersuchungen Belletristik inkludieren. Bei der Textsorte "Lyrik" haben Metaphern und andere rhetorische Stilmittel eine besondere und hervorragende Bedeutung und werden wahrscheinlich bei der Rangfolge der Äquivalenzforderungen in Übersetzungen stärker beachtet als in belletristischen Texten. Aus den Resultaten ist ebenfalls ersichtlich, dass nur wenige Metaphern blasser sind als das Original, von 14 Belegen ist dies in 6 Fällen diagnostizierbar.

This essay explores the connection between rhythm and imagery in three poems by Tomas Tranströmer. The poems are: “Ostinato”, “Alkaiskt” and “Preludium”. In the essay, an analysis of rhythm is combined with an analysis of imagery. The rhythmic analysis focuses on concepts like “verse”, “phrase” and “stressed” and “unstressed” syllables. The analysis of imagery focuses on such concepts as “simile”, “metaphor” and “symbol”. The essay uses these concepts to explore the connections between rhythm and imagery in the poems. The result of the research is that there are several ways in which rhythm and imagery interact in the three poems. They interact, for example, through a correspondence between rhythmic repetition and imagery of endless movement. The study ends by recommending that future analysis of Tranströmer's poetry should pay closer attention to the way that rhythm is used in his poems and the way it effects their meaning.

Mot bakgrund av att jag tappade motivationen att skriva skönlitteratur så fort jag i förväg bestämde textens handling, beslöt jag mig för att hålla fast vid en intuitiv metod men att istället byta genre från roman till novell. Syftet med denna studie är att försöka beskriva hur min metod växte fram och analysera förtjänster och svårigheter med en intuitiv metod. Genom att studera författare som varit inspirationskällor för mig har jag upptäckt att flera av dem brottats med liknande problem och att min stil i flera avseenden påverkats av dem. Resultatet av min studie är att det finns uppenbara likheter mellan Franz Kafkas produktion och min egen när det gäller litterär metod, berättarsynvinkel och bildspråk. Vidare betraktar jag mina noveller snarare som dikter än noveller då grundstrukturen i dem påminner om lyrik, vilket jag försöker visa med hjälp av begrepp hämtade från Jurij Lotman och Riffaterre. Det visade sig också att min förebild inom novellistik, Hjalmar Söderberg, betraktade sina Historietter mer som dikter än noveller. Jag diskuterar även på vilket sätt mina noveller kan ha påverkats av Tomas Tranströmers och Pär Lagerkvists produktion. Avslutningsvis försöker jag också se om det finns möjligheter att komma förbi svårigheterna med min litterära metod när jag i framtiden ska försöka att skriva en roman.
