Three empirical essays on family economics. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / ProQuest dissertations and theses

January 2010 (has links)
Essay 2 uses Chinese adult twin data to investigate birth weight effect, the outcomes of which have been changed to long-term achievements. The OLS results suggest that birth weight has significant positive relationship with earnings, adult height, and health conditions. However, within-twin-pair results indicate that birth weight has significant positive influence only on adult height. Essay 2 also systematically interprets the pattern of bias directions of OLS relative to within-twins estimates across empirical studies on long-term outcomes. For health measures, OLS estimates are consistently biased upward relative to within-twins estimates across empirical studies, suggesting an overall positive correlation between omitted factors and birth weight. On the contrary, the bias direction of OLS relative to within-twins estimates fluctuates across empirical studies on ability-related outcomes, including educational attainment and earnings. This suggests that there are two main types of omitted variable (e.g., endowments and post-birth parental inputs) with each type having different correlation with birth weight. / Essay 3 uses data from the 2000 and 2005 censuses of China. It analyzes trends on the marital behavior of Chinese people during 1970-2004, and the impact of the one-child policy in terms of marriage age, marriage rate, and assortative mating on age. First, this essay finds that from 1990 onwards, more people have preferred to marry at and after their mid-twenties. Interestingly, up to the early 2000s, the prevailing marriage rates of men and women over 35 years old maintained at very high levels (over 90%) despite China becoming more prosperous. Moreover, the positive assortative mating on age was more or less the same from 1970 to 2004. In addition, this essay is the first to compare the marriages of Zhuang people relative to other non-Han people (excluding Man people) around 1989 to implement the difference-indifferences (DiD) estimation. Results from DiD estimations indicate that the one-child policy encourages more people to delay marriages. On the one hand, the policy favors more men at 30 years old or above to marry young women in their twenties. On the other hand, interestingly, it also induces more young men to marry older women. / The dissertation consists of three empirical studies on Chinese household behavior. Essay 1 uses Chinese child twin data to examine the effect of birth weight on performances during childhood and adolescent periods. Essay 1 has three main contributions to literature. First, this essay is the first to use twin data of an Asian developing country to study the birth weight impact. Within-twins results suggest that birth weight has significant effect on physical growth, but no significant effect on school performance, health conditions, and personality. Second, this study is the first to apply threshold regression on twin data to examine the non-linearity effect of birth weight. Overall, there is no evidence to support the argument that the effect is nonlinear on medium-term outcomes. Third, this study is the first to test directly whether birth weight effect operates through interaction with post-birth parental inputs. There is no evidence to support that this mechanism works in within-twins results. / Wong, Man Kit. / Adviser: Junsen Zhang. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-01, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references. / Electronic reproduction. Corporate-Startup integration: Understanding the types of startups manufacturing corporates are interested in and how to achieve a successful integration / Corporate-Startup integrering: Förståelse för vilka typer av startups som stora tillverkande företag är intresserade av och hur de ska nå en framgångsrik integration

Cederhage, Ludvig, Backman, Ebba January 2023 (has links)
KPMG has recognized that large manufacturing corporates in Sweden are experiencing impaired growth possibilities and have therefore started to turn to startups to help with innovation. Corporates have traditionally focused on growth through product improvement or market expansion but have recently started to shift their focus to acquisitions and partnerships with high potential startups. However, since there are many differences between corporates and startups the collaboration can be difficult to handle, especially when it comes to integration. This study aims to investigate what types of startups large corporates are currently looking to collaborate with and to create a practical framework that can act as a guide to increase the chance of successfully integrating a startup into a corporate's operations. This study is a qualitative study that examines several Swedish manufacturing companies by delving into their specific cases. A thematic analysis, document and literature review is presented, and the results indicate that Swedish manufacturing corporates want startups with technologies that boost digital transformation (AI, IoT, digital twins) to increase predictability, traceability, and optimization. They also want to increase sustainability initiatives in terms of both technologies and materials. This is followed by a framework for how a successful corporate-startupintegration should be done. The results from the study contribute to the work of improving collaboration between startups and corporates and the results from this study can help create economic benefits, promote social sustainability, and address environmental challenges more effectively.

Vulnerability and Social Functioning in Schizophrenia

Stålberg, Gabriella January 2013 (has links)
This thesis offers a broad approach in elucidating biological risk factors, as well as psychological and social functioning in schizophrenia. The aims are as follows: (I) investigate the association between birth characteristics and schizophrenia, (II) study the association between levels of neurotransmitter neuropeptide Y (NPY) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), social function and longitudinal outcome in schizophrenia, (III) compare social functioning of patients with schizophrenia with their biological siblings and (IV) explore how siblings to patients with schizophrenia perceive the sibling relationship and their role. Paper I was a cohort analysis of 11,360 same-sexed twins in which obstetric records were used. Low birth weight and small head circumference were associated with later development of schizophrenia. To some extent the results persisted in the within-pair analyses conducted on 82 pairs discordant for schizophrenia. Fifty-six patients with schizophrenia were included in paper II. Levels of NPY in CSF correlated to social competence at index admission. For each standard deviation increase in baseline NPY, there was a concomitant increased risk of being unemployed, having moderate or severe symptoms or recent hospitalization at the 3-year follow-up. In paper III, social functioning was investigated using the Swedish version of the videotaped test Assessment of Interpersonal Problem Solving Skills (AIPSS) in 70 participants (25 patients with schizophrenia, 20 siblings and 25 randomly selected controls). The patients presented severe deficits in social functioning. The siblings expressed subtle impairments in nonverbal language but did not generally differ from the controls. To explore the siblings’ perspective on schizophrenia a qualitative study was conducted with interviews of 16 siblings in paper IV. A unifying major theme was an emotional sibling bond. Siblings developed several coping patterns, including avoidance, isolation, normalization, care giving and grieving. A third major theme consisted of the fear of inheriting schizophrenia. In conclusion, fetal growth, altered levels of NPY in CSF and subtle impairments in nonverbal social behavior might be important risk factors in schizophrenia. Patients with schizophrenia revealed extensive impaired social functioning, and from the siblings’ perspective, a brother or sister’s diagnosis of schizophrenia seems to have a profound psychological impact on the siblings.

Effets of a comparison situation in mental rotation sex differences : A dizygo-tictwinstudy.

Maltese, François 19 September 2013 (has links)
The mental rotation test (MRT) is the most robust test revealing that men outperform women. Two major causes have been proposed for explaining the origin of this difference. The first focused on brain masculinization under the action of androgen during the fetal development. Vuoksimaa et al., (2010) showed that dizygotic opposite-sex female have greater performances than dizygotic same-sex female. For the second hypothesis, sex difference is mainly due to social regulation factors and stereotype threat interaction. We test here this second hypothesis. In a twin design we tested, for the first time, these two causal explanations. Same-sex dizygotic young adult pairs (23 pairs of males and 34 pairs of females), and opposite-sex dizygotic pairs (62 pairs) took a computerized MRT in two experimental co-action conditions. In the first condition, the experimental situation make the co-twin comparison possible (CSP): “you and your co-twin do the same test today”, and in the other experimental condition called, improbable comparison situation (CSI), they are told that: “you and your co-twin do different test today”. Accuracy and responses time where analyzed. Our results do not support the biological model but, in contrary, support the social regulation and stereotype threat model.

Deliberate and Emergent Strategies for Digital Twin Utilization : A PLM-Principal’s Perspective

Wågberg, Felix January 2019 (has links)
The industry has during the past decades been changing towardsdigitalization at a rapid pace, adapting new frameworks and digitalsolutions, with the thrive to improve efficiency, and output quality. This thesis covers how a hyped industry concept, digital twin, incontext of smart manufacturing, could be applied in this changingclimate. Focus is put on what strategies a Product LifecycleManagement (PLM) principal could adapt when approaching theutilization of digital twins, in a customer setting. The research project, using a qualitative exploration format, incorporated a thorough review of journal articles and standards, interconnected with conducted interviews with industry experts, inorder to develop two strategies on how to approach the conceptof digital twins. The two-part strategies were formed on the basis of Mintzberg(1978) emergent and deliberate strategies. The former, consisted ofIDEF0 function modeling diagramming, where a digital twin businessprocess was portrayed, based on the literature review and interviewdata. The latter, approached the digital twin application challenge ina theoretical manner, based on the concept’s high risk anduncertainty, incorporating organizational structure theory andinnovation theory. The two strategies showed two different pathsto approach the digital twin phenomena and how to, boththeoretically and practically, adapt digital twins in a customer setting.

Wermke, Kathleen 29 January 2002 (has links)
The cry development of babies and the regularly occurring phenomena and principles are discussed in the present paper. The time variations of the fundamental frequency (melodies) in babies cries in the first five months of life was analyzed in 30 medically normal monozygotic twins. This study documents that the baby s cry is far more than only an innate biological alarm signal which is reserved to exceptional situations of communication. The developmental principles of the cry melody found justify the categorization of the baby s cry on the same level as other early noncry vocalizations as essential precursors for the acquisition of speech. The perceptual capacity of young infants as already demonstrated by extensive studies of other authors can now also be compared to equivalent cry production on the basis of the complex phenomena found with regard to cry melody development of melody in the cry. The 1,700 cry melodies analyzed were classified into similarity classes by means of a comparison. A system of classification defining six similarity classes (melody types) which are based on fundamental form characteristics (slow modulation properties) of the cry melodies was suggested. The form characteristics of the melody types are invariant apart from linear transformations of the time axis and a constant shift value in the frequency axis (with unchanged frequency hub). All cry melodies were unequivocally assigned to the classes of melody type formed and visualized in frequency or time without any scale transformations. The consistency of all the investigations conducted in the present study justify the suggested classification. It could be shown that the synchronicity and the concordance in the melody development for monozygotic twins is very much greater than that for unrelated twins of the same sex and age. The monozygosity of the twins and the greater synchronicity of the development thereby attained resulted in the universality in the development being manifested very much more distinctly than would have been the case in an average population. A continuous regular development of melody could be demonstrated in all twins and depicted in the form of a development diagram. A greater concordance and synchronicity between the monozygotic twins of the same pair was found with regard to the characteristics of the melody types produced and their absolute frequency at a certain age. This and the likewise demonstrable ability of the twins to reproduce the melodies in a highly similar form are very strong arguments corroborating a role of genetic factors in the production of the melody types according to an internal cerebral program.

Dois Irmãos e seus precursores: um diálogo entre o romance de Milton Hatoum, a Bíblia e a mitologia ameríndia / Dois Irmãos and its precursors: a dialogue between the novel by Milton Hatoum, the Bible and the Amerindian mythology

Mello, Lucius Flavius de 02 December 2013 (has links)
The following dissertation focuses on the analysis and comparison of Milton Hatoums novel Dois Irmãos (The Brothers, 2006) and the biblical narrative of the fraternal clashes in the book of Genesis, especially that of the twins Jacob and Esau. The conflict-ridden relationship between brothers is a constant leitmotiv, a point of interest that develops in different ways throughout the first book of the Hebrew Bible. Hatoum seeks the biblical narrative matrix for Western thought and Humanitys cultural memory through the impulse of his theme, therefore he does not set out from the Bible. How then, does the Brazilian author progress through his novel, whose fulcrum is the clash between brothers in respect to their primogeniture, which brings us back to the generative biblical text of Genesis to baste his fiction? Our journey in search of this answer is brightened by a fumbling and stumbling path. As in a folkloric dance, narrator and protagonists spiral, trade places and take turns in the roles of Esau, Jacob, Cain, Abel, and Joseph. Our research will approximate these narratives either through similarities or through the estrangement from the Hatounian novel. We will seek the vestiges from the biblical narrative present in the Brazilian authors work following the trails of Omar, Yaqub, and especially the narrator, Nael. An interspersed narrator, half Indian, half Arab; bastard son, progeny of one of the novels twins and a young Indian girl, the Lebanese family\'s maid. Led by Nael\'s narrative, we will constantly flirt with the eyes of memory. Nael leads us to a surprising discovery: it is he who brings into focus the national scope in our research and, as a descendant to the indigenous Amazonian peoples, he reveals himself as the most legitimate heir to all mythological ancestrality born from folktales and myths of rival twins narratives that are as ancient if not more than the Bible. So, to a certain extent, Nael steals the light originally shined upon the twins Omar and Yaqub for himself and embraces the primogeniture, while the power and name are at stake, be it from the familys patriarch, or the original myth.

Sibling relationship quality : a longitudinal study of twins and their families

Mark, Katharine Mary January 2017 (has links)
The overarching goal of this thesis was to examine sibling relationship quality in young twin children, as well as the ways in which this key bond is associated with other familial relationships within the home environment. The three articles included were part of a longitudinal and multi-method study, run by myself and my colleague - the Twins, Family and Behaviour study. Accounts were collected from 282 mothers and 132 fathers of twins, over a two-year time period. Parents completed postal questionnaires and a telephone interview, and observations via Skype recorded them interacting with each of their children. The research was unique, as it employed a number of novel measures and sophisticated analyses that have not yet been used within a longitudinal twin sample such as this. Results showed that, contrary to expectations, no mean level differences emerged when monozygotic twin pairs, dizygotic twin pairs, and non-twin pairs were compared on their sibling relationship quality (Paper 1). Behavioural genetic modelling also revealed that sibling interactions were mainly influenced by the shared environment, common to both children within the dyad, but also by the genetic propensities of the siblings themselves (Paper 1). Using the innovative Preschool Five Minute Speech Sample interview, we found that mothers who expressed more family-wide positive, and less family-wide negative, emotion towards their children reported more positivity within the sibling relationship – even when controlling for questionnaire measures of the mother-child relationship (Paper 2). Finally, opposing the majority of past literature, cross-lagged tests evidenced that earlier positivity within the sibling bond was predictive of later marital satisfaction, and of positivity within both the mother-child and the father-child bond (Paper 3). The implications of the findings include: the generalisability of studies of twins in childhood to the wider non-twin sibling population (Paper 1); the usefulness of maternal speech sample measures in capturing unique variance in sibling relationship quality (Paper 2); and the impact of affectionate sibling exchanges on entire family systems (Paper 3). Future research would benefit from exploring the nature of the relationship between twin brothers and sisters further, using both younger and older children's reports of their family interactions, within a more ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample.
