Rosengård was built in the 1960s and 1970s as part of the million program, in which one million new homes were built in ten years. But since then there have been no major changes besides minor cosmetic changes. These efforts have not been sufficient enough and have not given any significant improvement of the area and the problems remain until today. Malmö is today very a divided city, a segregated city, and integrating the eastern and western parts of the city is an important issue for the municipality government in Malmö. Today's urban form of Rosengård has major shortcomings and makes it more difficult for the inhabitants of the area to integrate into the city of Malmö. In the land use plan for Malmö city, Rosengård is pointed out as a prioritized area with a strong focus on urban development. The focus is on turning Amiralsgatan into an urban high street with a rich range of shops and life and movement on the sidewalks. An analysis of Rosengård is made from a perspective of density and mixed-use development. Based on the compact urban model, a development proposal has been constructed in which will be a vision for the future development of the area. The theoretical starting point "The Compact City" is a planning strategy that emphasizes the dense city, which guarantees good accessibility with integrated public transport. The compact city allows for a more pedestrian and bicycle friendly city and less car use. The mixed-use development is also a central pillar in the compact city and leads to better access to commercial and service. The goal is to achieve a denser urban form by applying the driving factors that characterize the compact urban model. The new Rosengård will be a continuation of Malmö's inner city and Amiralsgatan is the main central axis, which will undergo a major overhaul. The street's width is reduced from 120 meters to 40 meters and a new tram line goes in the center of the street. The shopping mall of today’s Rosengård center is being demolished in favor of a dense grid plan that is more walking and cycling oriented. Emilstorp industrial area is transformed into a new neighborhood with a new central park, housing and commercial areas.

Food environments in Islamabad, PakistanHasnain, Saher January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation examines how concerns about food system transformations affect how middle class consumers in Islamabad, Pakistan, perceive and approach food consumption in their everyday lives. The dissertation is situated in the context of risky food environments and food fears resulting from intensified, industrialised, and increasingly lengthened global food systems. Working within food geography and food environments paradigms, this dissertation explores how the transformation of food systems is associated with increasing anxiety about food security and safety for middle class urban consumers in Islamabad. Qualitative data gathered from semi-structured interviews and participant observation is used to illustrate the effects external influences, such as energy scarcity and violent events, have on everyday food environments. The dissertation examines the ways in which conceptualisations of 'good food', and trust relationships are negotiated in these dynamic food environments. The intensely geographical nature of these food environments and food systems, and the role of place-specific contexts on perceptions and adaptations related to food anxieties are emphasised. Situated in literatures on food anxiety and food consumption emerging from geography, food studies, and anthropology, this dissertation challenges dominant discourses on alternative and ethical consumption in a globalising food system. The results of this research not only contribute to literature on South Asia, but also contribute to consumption practices of a burgeoning middle class in developing countries.

In a context of urban development at full speed in Guangdong (South of China), especially its capital Guangzhou, the rapid and radical transformation of landscapes raises a number of questions about the relationship between societies and their environment, the local peoples and the living places, art and the city. Faced with political and economic issues related to urban change, what is the role and work of art on the city layout? In what forms and in what ways the art it does integrity? With artistic interventions in public space, the artist is capable of restoring it in situ, mutual communication between people and places? What approaches and possible ways to address these issues?Since there are many western buildings built in Guangzhou last thirty years, face to face traditional Chinese sculptures that do not fit the Western style, how can we find the subchannels reconciling two polarities - the modern westernized form and the traditional Cantonese spirit - in the creation of urban sculpture? It therefore becomes necessary to rebuild a modern version of the old system by providing a local contemporary urban form using the traditional skills of artisans who exceed the dissonance between westernized architectural context and Cantonese regional sculpture.

Urban production in the case of Algiers : Looking for the Urban Design.Bouragba, Djamel Eddine 14 October 2016 (has links)
The present research addresses the issue of Urban Design applied to the case of Algiers metropolis. In this city, large-scale projects have been undertaken during the last decade : highway infrastructure, major equipements, urban and suburban transport networks, etc. The overall approach has been formalized in the Algiers 2030 Strategic Plan. The choices that this plan offers, are drawn from many experiences. Nevertheless, the delivery elements of the plan do not reflect the spirit of the experiences refered to. In a situation of uncertainty regarding the real execution of the project, we have examined the Strategic Plan to check how to put into practice the principles contained in its discourse. The analysis showed that the plan is reduced in practice to a plan drawing function without a purpose, an aim or a vision. This Strategic Plan seems far from the Urban Design approach : a plan that does not rely on a knowledge and an analysis of urban reality, the examination and the exploration of possible futur outcomes, nor what a consultation process and debate could bring, that is to say, all of which makes the Urban Design.

Pouvoir et production urbaine à Tripoli Al-Fayha'a (Liban) : quand l'illusio de la rente foncière et immobilière se mue en imperium / Power and production of urban space Tripoli Al-Fayha'a (Lebanon) : when the illusio of land rent and real-estate income mutates into imperiumDewailly, Bruno 02 March 2015 (has links)
The Tripoli Al-Fayha’ a (Lebanon) urban area has a complex and eventful history. For a century its society has been facing transformative changes with a multitude of sources and consequences essentially linked to the reconfiguration of its economic structures born of its incorporation into modern Lebanon. Once an ancient and influential commercial city with regional and international reach, Tripoli has lost much of its economic vitality. It no longer creates sufficient wealth to provide its population with the continuation of past prosperity. It has become a place of physical, economic and symbolic battles in which its inhabitants struggle daily to ensure their livelihood. Postulating the establishment of an economy now principally based on a system of land and real-estate rent and of speculation, our thesis is proposing to analyse the reasons and true tenor of this particular process of production of urban space, as well as its mechanisms and effects, as a study, over time, of the spatialities linked to three urban projects: coastal planning, the realization of a real-estate driven land reparcelling of suburban orchards, and the redevelopment and enhancement of the Medina. The analysis of the sets of actions specific to these three situations – taken in their spatial, historical, and sociopolitical dynamics as well as on a local, regional, national, and international scale – invites one to question the meaning of urbanities and of a possible citadinity at play in Tripoli and, beyond this, to question the fundamental nature of the power exercised there. This analysis leads us then to ponder on the formation and existence of, as P. Bourdieu would designate it, a real-estate illusio, produced from and producing a powerful pleasurable “common affect”, which has reached – following B. Spinoza’s proposition – a state of imperium with unsustainable human and governmental consequences.

Možnosti a přesahy tradiční lidové architektury jako inspirace pro ekologicky šetrnou architekturu současnosti / Possibilities and Overlaps of the Traditional FolkAarchitecture as an Inspiration for the Environmentally Friendly Architecture TodayKURINCOVÁ, Marie January 2009 (has links)
The work deals with the possibility of use the traditional knowledges and methods in construction with regards to today's lifestyle and technology, emphasizes the importance of the legacy, respect for countryside, individuality and surrounding environment. Above all I try to summarize the information about the current situation in architecture of family houses, which influence dominates in this area and which choices we have. I target especially the organic architecture mainly for wood constructions. At the beginning of the work I describe the issues of present architecture. I am dealing with the question if traditional and modern way of life must be in conflict, how we change our environment today and what could be the eventual effects for the future. The second part of the work is focused on the traditional vernacular architecture in South Bohemia, especially in the Bohemian Forest (Šumava) region, on types of construction, use and processing of materials and their integration into the countryside. The final part is applied to present ecology architecture. Firstly I summarize and identify the objects in general, subsequently I focus on the wood constructions, which correspond to traditional knowledge and experience in the manufacture and processing of wood.

In view that the relations of ecologic effects overflow the limits of the traditional academic training on planning, the methodological models used are not longer adequate to solve problems; then there is a need to significant changes in the professional training of future architects and planners.Systemic urban planning is called to play a more important role not only in city management but in its hinterland connection. Universities play an important role in providing an adequate training to this end. Thus, at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, National University of San Agustin, Arequipa, Perú, there is the course Urban Planning 1, where the students are being introduced to the systemic thought within the urban planning. The main objectives are to provide a conceptual basis towards a systemic planning and a sustainable urban design; to introduce the students in urban planning within a general concept of «Preventive Urban-environmental Planning», that is, urban planning with vision to the long run, based on landscaping plans, able to prevent and reduce the environmental impacts, that were able to articulate all results in a land use plan and have enough flexibility to undergo a permanent spatial analysis and allow planning oriented to sustainable development projects.
