[en] PUPPET: PET PUPPETS AND OTHER DISCARDED MATERIALS / [pt] PUPPET: BONECOS DE PET E OUTROS MATERIAIS DESCARTADOS

EDUARDO DE ANDRADE OLIVEIRA 27 December 2007 (has links)
[en] This work analyzes the designer`s contribution to the creation of characters/puppets, having as main concept the creative re- use of PET bottles and other discarded materials. Based on the principle that the know-how about materials is one of the main requests for a product creation, this dissertation proposes an investigation of PET materials on the puppets` craft. It shows how the designer can appropriate of this material and make it participate in the signifying web. By resignifying the PET as a communication tool, it gives the material, potentially harmful to the environment, a new social use. In a second moment, using the concept of appropriation developed by Roger Chartier, we present the Puppet Theater as a medium to establish new meanings, which contributes to knowledge.

This artistic project, equivalent to the Master dissertation in visual arts, is composed by the documentation of the creative process, which is itself the Master degree in Visual Arts, as well as a small selection of photoengraving originals entitled \"Small Compendium of the Seas\". The documentation consists in three parts: first, art works and record of past exhibits and works in progress; second, visual and text notes; and last, selection of works preceding the period of Masters in Visual Arts. The organization of the documentation of the artistic process was made by prioritizing the body of work and considering the visual language as a diverse language but with the same legitimacy of verbal language, as well to the word, the visual knowledge operates through intellectual and sensible reasoning - and may be in the university being debated by artists who work with this language, measured within the particularities of visuality. Therefore I present the record and the materialized art works as part of a process where thinking and doing are the same creative act and in which intellectual complexity exists detached from the necessity of articulating word and independent of a pre-formulated verbal thesis, the texts here have another function: related interests, techniques and thematic influences from other areas of knowledge.

This paper starts from studies on visual language pratices, regarding new technology supports, exactly those that make images through direct light emission and the decrease of the visual area. The quantitative and qualitative analysis was made through collected material and questionaries presented to a group of students from the public teaching area in the state of São Paulo. I chose this sample because of a pre-study and an in loco passive image production behavior, because of the predominance of narrative language as a result of teaching and learning pratices, regarding efforts on the argumentative function, specially when the educational context suggests a relation between verbal and visual aspects, the interpretation of diagrams and a filmic material, in order to qualify teaching practices. This research, after diagnosises on a week basis, kept going on from the analysis to the orientation bases, laws, acts and others, regarding teaching and learning in the state area that in a way approaches the visual cognition. In order to support the theory approached during this paper, it was used concepts from the Pieirce philosophy (semiose, hábito, percepção, memória, e as categorias cenopitagóricas) because it regards language and cognition phenomenon, which epistemological support identifies, explains and project actions, diagnostics and predictions in the visualization relation and technological supports amoung learning actions. In order to do so, it was necessary to create limits to the visual language, based on phenomenological categories in order to extract categories and create syntatic and morphologic topics inferred by Gestalt de Marx Wertheimer and the visual processes approached by the neuro science. In a conclusion, the initial fase was reapproached and the visual cognition was checked, expressed by the production of the visual language population sample.

No. of bitstreams: 1 COS - Sidney Gomes Campanhole.pdf: 2113874 bytes, checksum: 74290ea52035863af303ec2f847e1d1e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-10-11 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / The present work has as its objective the study of the perceptive apprehensions of visual language, which in this case is the one systematized in the classroom. Starting from the epistemology of the Peircean Semiotics, one proposes to review the discussion between innatists and empiricists on perception, which from Philosophy extends to Psychology in the 20th century. It places the source of systematized learning in the classroom and takes perception as tangible matter in the language produced. The perceptive development perspectives implicit in the evolution of the Visual Arts and children s drawing are analyzed synthetically for verification of congruence points. The profile regarding school praxis, observed as language, allows verifying its accommodation in the area of Art education and submission to non-verbal language classifications. The study seeks to question the innate question, the gift, that the paths of school praxis and the cultural environment restrict visual language. It proposes to subsidize future discussions on qualitative relations in the phenomenon of Communication, from a more qualitative apprehension of its language. Given the sign-perception focus, and consequently, language-cognition, one seeks to compare the idiosyncratic visions of visual language acquisition. For this purpose, it dialogues with the theory of multiple intelligences that reinforces the interaction between medium and genetic determinism. The main hypothesis is the displacement of existing learning activities, or in case they are not existent, then those to be developed from the predominance of the third category must dislocate to the second category, that is, from apprehension of legi-signs for the sin-sign. The visual language to be learned required the definition of the aspects of syntax and morphology, given that for such a dialogue was articulated between the principles of ordination of perceptive structures proposed by Gestalt and its variations. The experimental character of the research fell into groups of students of two segments of the school system, whose verifications did not establish relation between them, taking as variable the before-after of each group. One submitted to the apprehension of morphology and the other to syntax. The conclusion based on the research states that perception occurs at the moment and in a mediated way. As long as the first one might produce reorganizations of the sign at the duration of the process of keeping , the second one tends to generate associating processes that, in fact, make the relations with the object analised distant from its existence, limitating the visual language learning / O presente trabalho tem como objeto as apreensões perceptivas da linguagem visual, no caso, aquela que é sistematizada nos bancos escolares.

A lógica heurística/persuasiva do design gráfico / The heuristic/persuasive logic of graphic design

During that while, some inquiries have risen related to the criteria of persuasion assumed by designers when making their visual designs. Which values do designers claim to select and recode visual signs into visual messages that convey persuasion? Today design methodologies do not include any explicit concern about issues linked to the persuasiveness inside graphic design, neither in Brazil nor abroad. The aim of this work is to bring back the consciousness of Design as the language of cultural intervention in space, by planning a strategy within which the design-making, as well as the design-reading, will be collected in order to let us aware of its functioning. As case study, the research takes 9 (nine) graphic designs addressed to stand for visual identities. Description and analysis of the designers criteria to prefer visual signs have been rigorously done on the case studies, in an eleven-month basis. The step forward is to decant both perceptive and cognitive categories that seem to authorize persuasiveness to be included into designing procedures, qua that coefficient answerable to logically articulate, aesthetically provide and ethically join together all other factors of design efficiency. The investigation is funded on the mindwalk invitation offered by the Charles S. Peirce s methodological pragmatism, as well as the existential perspective of José Ortega y Gasset s ratiovitalism, to a shy extent for the time being. The chapter flow of this dissertation is shaped according to the triadic aspect of semiosis: the candid-gaze (on firstness and sign), the reporting-gaze (on secondness and object), and the critical-gaze (on thirdness and interpretant). Through that phenomenological-semiotic filter, we are already able to roughly endorse a philosophical basement of Design qua Science: the science of grounds, relations and processes of all our cultural intervention in space.Surely, this Masters final paper has not exhausted the question yet, but the démarche has revealed the possibility of a better comprehension of those factors that converge into design efficiency: a feasibility that crosses over the graphic design boundaries towards a search for the metaphysical sameness of Design, by coming up with some elements that could enrich, from this Masters viewpoint, the debate long ago sought after on the building of a general theory or even a Philosophy of Design.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Luis Alexandre Fernandes Ogasawara.pdf: 9774217 bytes, checksum: eab12a7758765b926a54ee60df6c64d7 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-09-22 / Being sure that the formal constitution of a package is the result of several factors, like manufacturig process, features of the material used in such process, cost, ergonomy, among others, it is presupposed that the study of Packaging Design may be approached under many points of view. Thus, this research aims to study packaging design under the comunication dimension, as an element mediating the product inside the package and the consumer. Such communication takes place in peculiar space and time conditions, competing with several other stimuli during fractions of seconds of the consumer s attention in the point of sale. In such a context, for a package to be successful in its persuasive function, the package designer should link the elements in a space which would be limited, on the one hand, by the category language (to prevent the product s mischaracterization), and on the other, by the innovative features which will make it outstanding before its rival products. To fulfill the goal of this research, a historic outline of packaging and its evolution, ending both in Post-Industrial Revolution Period and its cultural consequences, will be necessary. The Consumer Society, by Jean Baudrillard, and The Society of the Spectacle, by Guy Debord and some of their unfoldments will be the basis for this research. As to the study of such a varied spectrum of communication theories which focus packaging in its communication prospect, this work intends to be guided by distinct theoretic basis, among which Shannon s, Wieners and Moles s mathematic approach of Information Theory, so as to make it possible to talk of the persuasive performance of package, linked to the concepts of redundance and innovation. Peirce s Semiotic Theory will also contribute with subsides for the the analysis of dialogues between form and content. The body of this research will be composed of mass consuming goods packages, specifically up to 510-mililiter volume mineral water, in a moment in which the segment is coming through an increasing specialization degree, making it convenient to review some patterns that, in a certain way, fill up the visual language of such packages. This fact, which is due to the need to communicate new attributes of the products, is a marketing phenomenon with communication implications and it is very rich when it is studied / Na certeza de que a configuração formal de uma embalagem é decorrência de diversos fatores, como processo de fabricação, características do material com o qual é fabricada, custo, ergonomia, entre outros, pressupõe-se que o estudo do Design de Embalagens pode ser realizado sob diversas óticas.

Pictography embedded in traditional African decorated walls and floors as an early cultural language : the case of three languages in Limpopo province

Nhlangwini, Andrew Dandheni 07 1900 (has links)
The colonial era brought about Western civilisation, industrialisation, urbanisation and technology that led to the negation of the validity of the traditional wall decorations and the meaning behind what is understood as merely decorative shapes and parttens. To research as to whether this is true, the aim of this study is to establish whether the symbols applied on the traditional African murals have any linguistic significance. The research investigated the pictography embedded in the traditional murals of three linguistic groups, namely the Balobedu, Vatsonga and Vhavenda in Limpopo Province. The researcher gathered and recorded from the surviving elders the vital codes which unlock the meaning of signs, symbols, colours and geometric shapes before the knowledge is lost forever when they die. Data was collected mainly from Vatsonga female elders in their homes by using unstructured interviews. Traditional huts are decorated with symbols, signs, shapes, lines, and colours on the maguva (walls around the courtyard), mavala ya nghotsa (design and patterns, mainly in repeated half circles (figures 26 to 35)), mabilomu/swiluva/ swiphaswana (calabash/gourd flowers), ku sindza hi makholo (patterned cow dung floor) and ku tsema (coloured bands around the hut), depicted in figures 12 to 15. According to the respondents, the maphapha (calabashes/gourds) is a symbol for the plant that feeds the people. The plant from which maphapha are made, has heart-shaped green leaves and yellow flowers that develop into a calabash/gourd, which are consumed as food (figures 10–11). In this sense, it represents a woman and her responsibilities as carer and life giver. The results affirm that the pictography is not merely a reproduction of common decorative patterns, but is instead the source of an ancient visual expressive language carried down from generation to generation through oratory and visual narratives in the form of symbols, and signs. The study recommends the preservation of the linguistic significance of the traditional South African murals that have long been marginalised, possibly encouraging the younger generations to review their own history. / African Languages / D. Perceptual-cognitive Properties of Pictures, Diagrams, and Sentences: Toward a Science of Visual Information Design

Coppin, Peter 27 March 2014 (has links)
Right now you are reading a sentence. Earlier, you might have been looking at a realistic picture, such as a photograph, or an outline drawing in a set of instructions. If you are a programmer, you work with sentence-like structures, such as code, or a system diagram. These are all graphic representations. To varying degrees, the effectiveness of every graphic representation relies on its ability to convey the designer’s intended meaning and elicit the intended reaction from its audience. However, the design of graphic representations, even in technical domains such as visual programming language design or interactive information visualization, currently relies heavily on general principles based solely on practice, intuition, and informal measures of effectiveness from the applied art and craft of design (as opposed to scientific analysis or theory). There is an increasing demand for a scientific understanding of design and its evaluation from stakeholders (who seek evidence for effectiveness) and designers (who seek to advance their field). Because both the creation of graphic displays and their perception are literally embodied experiences, a model was developed with an embodiment orientation, specifically based on how graphics are perceptually and cognitively processed. In my research, I found that graphic representations are constituted of two properties, pictorial and symbolic information, that emerge through two interrelated aspects of perception. In sighted individuals, for example, every graphic representation makes use of biological capabilities to process visual sensation (i.e., light hitting the retina), which are processed in relation to culturally-learned capabilities (i.e., writing). I observed how graphic representations – such as pictures, diagrams, and sentences – are “naturally selected” (i.e., during different phases of design or problem solving). From these observations, I developed a model that distinguishes and predicts the effectiveness of pictures, diagrams, and sentences, in terms of how object relations and attributes are pictorially or symbolically represented, relative to the functional roles of those representations, contexts, and in some cases, individual perceptual-cognitive differences among perceivers. This model is a step toward a science of graphics that could lead to evaluation techniques for information systems, theories for inclusive design, and ergonomically designed software programming tools.
