Critique, Hope, and Action: A Critical Content Analysis of Teacher-Selected Literature for the Elementary Classroom

Edwards, Jessica Lee Lavina 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to analyze teacher-selected children's literature for its potential use with critical pedagogy in the elementary classroom. This multi-analytical study uses tenets from critical multicultural analysis (CMA) and components from visual analysis (VA) to guide a critical content analysis of teacher-selected children's literature. Since it is the only nationally-recognized book list solely selected by educators, the texts for this study were selected from the Teachers' Choices Reading List titles. Although prior research on teacher-selected literature for the potential use of critical pedagogy in the elementary classroom does not exist, the results of this study show many opportunities for such within the last three years of the Teachers' Choices Reading List. A discussion on these results is presented through Paulo Freire's concept of critical pedagogy, as described in three stages: critique, hope, and action. Implications for practice and research are suggested based on the results of the study.

Pastoral Nostalgia and Digital Media: A Case Study Exploring Nostalgia Communication in Li Ziqi’s Online Short Videos

Deng, Jinpei January 2020 (has links)
The primary goal of this study is to observe how the meaning of nostalgia is negotiated and remediated in Li Ziqi’s short videos, and understand the construction and expression of pastoral images in the video, by examining its social modality of the audiencing site and the compositional and social modalities of the image site through a Critical Visual Approach(CVA). Except for CVA, Remix as a thinking tool helps to frame data selection, mixed methods and theories throughout. To be specific, the aim of this study is to examine Li Ziqi’s communication of nostalgia online via short videos, showcases how the pastoral characteristics are evoked in the videos and the relationship between nostalgia of pastoral life and short videos. Moreover, it is of interest to think about what nostalgia communication on short videos say about society. When it comes to the two sites, firstly, an ethnographic method of thick descriptions is used to study media text and selected comments on the audiencing site. Secondly, on the image site, compositional analysis on selected visual materials is used to examine its compositions and then signs and meanings embedded in them are analyzed through semiotic analysis and interpreted by thick descriptions. As for theories, nostalgia and media, the logic of social acceleration, remediation and new media, and simulacra and simulation are applied to facilitate discussion.

Ett Fönster Till 80-talet – En visuell analys av nostalgi i serien Sex Education

Jahre, Hedvig January 2020 (has links)
Our present time is experiencing a major change in everything from digitalisation to climate change, and one result of this is our longing to experience and share content that reminds us of another time. Nostalgic elements can be seen in many parts of our society and this essay examines how a past decade is represented in a modern media product and the nostalgic experience it generates. Today, there is a love for '80s nostalgia, which becomes visible in many newly produced films and series. The thesis is based on analyzing how the series Sex Education (2019-2020) has chosen to represent the 80s in a contemporary context to create a nostalgic effect on the recipient. Furthermore, the effect of mixing a nostalgic grip (nostalgic mise-en-scene, music and genre references) with a contemporary grip (the modern form of the theme) is that it creates contrasts which causes a friction that arouses the viewer's interest. The thesis applies qualitative film analysis, based on a categorizing model, to aesthetics and themes in the series Sex Education. The purpose is to demonstrate the series' nostalgic features and highlight how they are created.

"Always There": How Young Mothers Make Meaning of the Concept of Support Within the Context of Service Provision

Kuri, Erin January 2023 (has links)
Through this study, I aim to increase understanding of how young moms experience, perceive, make meaning, and conceptualize positive support within the context of service provision (education, residential services, legal services, healthcare etc.). More broadly, I aim to illuminate ways that societal notions of vulnerability and autonomy may be shifted to offer improved quality of support to young mothers and other marginalized communities. Such a shift would counter paternalistic attitudes that have historically influenced how “support” has been imposed on young mothers. Although a full transformation would take time, we may begin to undertake the necessary work of reimagining support, gradually shifting towards the goal of building capabilities toward relational autonomy. 25 moms from diverse socio-economic backgrounds in Ontario, Canada, between the ages of 16-25 years, participated in creating visual art images and/or verbally sharing what support meant to them. I engaged in a relational approach to interaction and dialogue, centering a praxis of reflexivity and ethical treatment of everyone involved in the interview process. Guided by a critical feminist framework that included intersectionality, maternal theory, and vulnerability theory, I engaged in a feminist phenomenological approach to the analysis of transcripts and co-constructed visual analysis of imagery with the moms. Study findings reveal how service provision contexts are shaped by traditional ways of understanding vulnerability and autonomy as a binary and in opposition to one another, with an overvaluation of invulnerability. Yet young moms describe that they understand positive support as a combination of both responses to the effects of exposure to sources of vulnerability and as efforts to build autonomy in relationships with service providers, infrastructure, and broader communities of care. In addition, young moms describe positive qualities of service design and delivery, such as being non-judgemental, reliable, and sensitive, with attuned and caring interactions. The combination of these qualities can facilitate a process of internalization of positive attitudes, culminating in the development of an identity as a confident caregiver. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Through this critical feminist arts-based study, I aim to increase understanding of how young moms make meaning of the concept of positive support within the context of service provision. 25 moms in Ontario, Canada, between the ages of 16-25 years, participated in creating visual art images and/or verbally sharing what support meant to them. Att döma en bok efter dess omslag : En studie om visuella trender och könsframställningar på romantikböcker / Judging a book by its cover : A study of visual trends and gender stereotypes represented on romance books

Memic, Selma, Vargas Catalan, Zuni Aurora January 2023 (has links)
The book cover is an important marketing tool for books to attract consumers and is the first contact readers have with the book. Romance books account for 18 % of fiction sales and 82 % of these readers are women. Previous research shows that book covers represent cultural ideas and establish a correlation between society's social structure and the consumption of books. And that there are established norms for representing sex and romance. This study analyses book covers to understand the cultural ideas and context within the romance genre for 2022. The methodology is a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis, with a theoretical framework of representation theory, stereotypes, tropes, and Goffman's gender stereotypes. The results of the study shows, among other things, that there is a visual trend of sexualising men that culturally consists of hegemonic masculinity, that romance novels for 2022 have a darker theme, and that the stereotypical portrayal of people on romance is strongly anchored. Additionally, the study found that the parallel trend of inclusivity found in society does not affect what is consumed on the top 100 list for romance novels in 2022.

En kris men två olika bilder : En bildanalys av tre nyhetskanalers visuella representation av krisen i Iran på Instagram / One Crisis But Two Different Pictures : A Visual Analysis of Three News Channels’ Visual Representation of The Crisis in Iran On Instagram

Kaeeny, Mary January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of the visual representation of the crisis in Iran on Instagram by Swedish and the Persian news accounts. The study analyzes the images through semiotic images analysis and includes 20 images, 10 of which are from two Swedish news accounts and the other 10 are from a Persian news account. The study draws on postcolonial theory, specifically the concept orientalism. The findings of the study reveal notable disparities in the reporting of the crisis between the Swedish and Persian news accounts. Notably, the Swedish visual reporting predominantly portrays women as the sole victims of the crisis, while the Persian news media has highlighted both male and female victims of the crisis. Consequently, the crisis in Iran is portrayed in the Swedish news media as a "women's revolution," implying that only women lack their human rights. Additionally, the results  have shown that the Swedish news media has visually reported the crisis in a way that reinforces the stereotyping of "the other", which has shown to be consistent with previous research.
