Gun violence among criminal networks : A quantitative analysis of Swedish police officers’ perceptions on crime prevention workWest, Emma January 2022 (has links)
Purpose This study amied to explore how police officers perceived the crime prevention efforts taken against gun violence in Sweden. Of particularly interest was to examine how certain efforts were perceived by the police officers, to be more or less effective when it comes to prevent gun violence from occurring among criminal networks. In this study, I explored which perceived effect certain efforts included under the working methods of community policing and problem-oriented policing had, as well as other efforts undertaken by law enforcement. Method Police officers who either worked in Gothenburg or Malmö city were targeted by the study. In sum, I received responses from 99 participants, in an on-line based questionnaire. The participants were selected through convenience sampling. Descriptive statistics are offered, and bivariate analyses were employed to identify officers’ perception differences of policing efficacy in vulnerable areas compared to non-vulnerable areas, and efficacy of law enforcement. Results The analyzes in the study, showed that the police officers overall perceived that the method of community policing to be crime preventive. This was especially the case for the vulnerable areas and in relation to the effort of an increased local police presence. As for the other method, problem-oriented policing, the officers particularly perceived that the effort of secret data eavesdropping to have the strongest crime prevention effect in both areas. The effort was also perceived to have more of an effect then both efforts included under community policing. As for hot spot policing, the other effort included under problem-oriented policing, the effort was overall perceived to have less of an effect among the officers. This was the cases for both areas. As for the importance to particularly prevent criminal networks possessions and sales of illegal drugs and weapons, community policing and problem-oriented policing were not perceived to be effective enough. As for the effect of the efforts undertaken by the law enforcement, a tougher approach against crime was among the police officers perceived to have the most effect. Conclusion The results of the study show that there is a continued increased need for evaluations of crime prevention efforts. The study also showed that there is an increased need that we as researchers, needs to further collaborate with the police force in order to further develop the craft of policing. / <p>2022-09-16</p>

Non-state crime prevention methods : Preventing youth crimeForss Norstedt, Hampus, Malmqvist, Jasmine Effie January 2021 (has links)
The purpose for this qualitative study is to examine the crime prevention strategies against youth crime within non-state actors' work. As well as obtaining views of successes and challenges of this work in practice. Youth crime is a major area of interest within criminology, and in recent years much interest has been directed at problems that arise in the so-called vulnerable areas of Sweden, where young people are at risk of being drawn into crime. Information has been gathered through semi-structured interviews with nine people representing seven different organizations / associations. The actors work with young people in one way or another through sports activities, mentor programs or independent youth centers; and most actors are active in vulnerable areas. The results show that it seems important to have committed adults in order to engage and gain trust from the young people. Further strategies for activating the young people in prosocial activities is revealed, as well as to spread good attitudes among the youths. The findings are put within the framework of criminological theories in order to discuss / <p>2021-01-13</p>

Människan bakom uniformen lär känna ungdomen under kepsen : En kvalitativ studie om hur sociala relationer kan stärkas / The person behind the uniform gets to know the youth under the cap : A qualitative study on how the project The Man Behind the Uniform contributes to strengthening the relationship between young people and blue-light staff as well as community support.Mirjeta, Uka, Raseme, Qoqaj January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this bachelor's thesis in sociology is to understand and reflect on how blue-light professions such as police, ambulance, emergency services and other professions such as social services and leisure leaders work with young people based on the project the Man behind the uniform. The sociological problem being studied is the disbelief young people can create towards the blue light professions as well as professions such as social services and leisure leaders. The study is based on the theories of social ties, organizational culture, shame and pride, over-, under- and optimal differentiation, habitus and segregation. Through a qualitative method in the form of eight interviews, the purpose has been to answer our question: In what ways can the project The Man Behind the Uniform strengthen the relationship and mutual trust between young people and those who work in the blue light profession? The result indicates that the attitude towards uniformed officials as well as professions such as social services and leisure leaders may be disturbed by many young people and that this is due to the ongoing negative effect of society on, among other things, vulnerable areas. The segregation that exists in the vulnerable areas is also a factor of the prevailing circumstances against officials.

Criminal networks and violent Islamic extremism : A search for meaningPriadi-Sörensen, Tobias January 2022 (has links)
The Swedish Police Authority currently categorise 61 urban areas in Sweden as vulnerable areas, where there is an increased risk of becoming a victim of crime or violence to both females and males living in those areas. In these places the feeling of insecurity and the lack of trust and confidence in the judiciary system is more common than in other urban parts of Sweden. Due to this negative trend and development local power factors have evolved, and the risk of parallel social structures enforced by criminal activity and violent extremism is higher than in other places in Sweden. This thesis investigates the connection between Swedish criminal networks and violent Islamic extremism to create a better understand of why individuals from the vulnerable areas in Sweden join criminal networks and, or violent Islamic extremist groups

Gatuvåld och traumareaktioner bland ungdomar som bor i särskilt utsatta områden / Community violence and trauma amongst youth that grow up in particularly vulnerable areasYoussefi, Mariam, Edrud, Thea January 2024 (has links)
One of the areas in which social workers can operate in is different forms of treatment, investigation and prevention work with youth that live in particularly vulnerable and urban areas. Areas in which the average income is lower in comparison to other areas, and areas that tend to be predominantly inhabited by ethnic minorities. These areas are particularly prone to gang crime and community violence. Thus affecting the overall safety of its inhabitants, in particular the youth population living there. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the connections that research has drawn attention to between community violence in particularly vulnerable areas and trauma reactions/signs of trauma among the young people who live in these areas by using the methodological approach of a literature study. The study seeks to understand found connections using psychological resilience theory and postcolonial theory. Findings of this study shows that as a result of living in areas particularly prone to community violence, a large proportion of youth are exposed to higher levels of community violence in various forms. Said exposure is also connected to certain symptoms of trauma, as well as other types of psychological distress. The results are connected to structural factors of a postcolonial society in which certain groups of people have no choice but to remain in the harmful area that they reside in. Resilience is valued, approached and defined differently in the studies that have been used in this work, but the overall result shows that it is a significant protective factor for youth that are exposed to community violence.

The role of physical design in crime prevention measures in public spaces : A comparative case study of Ryd and Vallastaden in LinköpingEriksson, Andreas January 2024 (has links)
Crime prevention is important for creating safe and secure urban environments. In recent years, gang crime and offences have been increasingly discussed in the Swedish debate. Previous research shows that physical design can be used from a crime prevention perspective. Research shows that physical design can influence the occurrence of crime and reduce the sense of fear of crime. This master thesis aimed to study crime prevention measures in relation to physical design in two different areas in Sweden, and how it affects residents' perception of safety and security. The results show that both neighbourhoods work with physical design to prevent crime, but thereare differences and similarities, and that the physical environment affects residents' sense of safety and security in different ways. The results also show that it is important to create an environment that encourages social encounters in order to create a strong community among residents. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with planners, landscape architects, architects and property owners. Walking interviews were also conducted with residents of the two neighbourhoods. Document analysis of reports and crime statistics was carried out.

Den begreppsmässiga problematiken : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om komplexiteten att beskriva arbetsplatsrelaterat hot och våld mot poliser i särskilt utsatta områden / The conceptual problem : A qualitative interview study on the complexity of describing workplace violence against police officers in particularly vulnerable areasClysén, Amanda, Berglund, Elin January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to create an understanding regarding the complexity of describing workplace violence against police officers who work in particularly vulnerable areas, based on the definitional problem. Through semi-structured interviews with five police officers who work in particularly vulnerable areas, we found that there is a definitional confusion regarding workplace violence. It emerged that threats were more difficult to define than violence, while it was possible to identify an ambivalence that showed that none of the concepts received a definite definition. The definition was based partly on which expressions and actions were included and excluded, respectively, on who sets the boundaries regarding threat and violence, but was also based on who is performing the actions. The main conclusion of the study was that it may not be possible to draw conclusions about range and character with certainty, without taking into account the definitional problem that prevails regarding workplace violence in particularly vulnerable areas.

Är alla unga män från Järvafältet kriminella? : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om unga vuxna män som håller sig undan en kriminell livsstil i utsatta områdenBahdi, Mikaela, Faka, Hevi January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors have been important for young men from the Järva-area to not develop a criminal lifestyle. The study also examines what it means for the interviewees to live in the Järva-area. This is to find out if the Järva-area has limited the interviewees or given them skills. This is because the Järva-area has been classified in media as a problem area. Which means that the people of Järva are stigmatized and stamped. The study is qualitatively designed, and the empirical material is collected from six interviews. All participants are young men aged 20–35 who grew up in different areas around the Järva field. The results of the collected empirical evidence suggest that family and friendships are the most important factors for the young men to not end up choosing a criminal lifestyle. The place Järva has meant an incredible sense of community for all participants in the explicit exclusion of society. The participants experience the most stigmatization and stamping when they are in surroundings outside of the Järva community. Growing up in Järva does not mean that all young men become criminals.
