Hot och våld på jobbet : En studie om arbetsgivarens skyldighet att motverka hot och våld inom vård och omsorg / Threats and violence within the workplace : A study about the employers legal obligations to prevent threats and violence within health and social care

In Sweden, threats and violence has become a serious psychosocial work environment problem within the workplaces of health and social care. Several studies show the need to pay attention to how the workers psychosocial work environment is affected by the risk of threats and violence. Women are more exposed of threats and violence because the professions were most women work, the threats and violence occur. The purpose of this study is to investigate what legal obligations the employer holds to prevent threats and violence in the working environment and what consequences it can have if the employer does not fulfill these obligations. For a deeper knowledge in threats and violence as a psychosocial work environment problem other factors that can affect are included. To fulfill the purpose and answer the research questions in this study the doctrinal method is used to describe, systematize and interpret the legislation, case law and literature.   The results of this study show that the legal actions that the employer is obliged to take is far-reaching. The preventive work is central considering the psychosocial work environment were threats and violence occur. If the employer fails to take the actions that is obliged there are different legal consequences depending on what type of actions the employer, deliberately or accidently, failed to take. Due to the extent of threats and violence in health and social care and some differences in the formulation of the legislation, future studies would be required to investigate if the legislation on this matter is enough.

A influência da promoção nas relações de amizade no ambiente de trabalho

O ambiente de trabalho é um local que pode ocasionar o surgimento de novas amizades. Os amigos, no contexto organizacional, podem fornecer apoio, compreensão e ajuda. A troca de experiência entre os envolvidos é uma rica ferramenta para possibilitar a sobrevivência no trabalho e a aprendizagem de como lidar com determinadas situações na empresa (RIORDAN e GRIFFETH, 1995). A perda de um amigo no local de trabalho, segundo Sias et. al. (2004), pode significar o fim de uma fonte de apoio e ajuda. O rompimento de um relacionamento de amizade, em uma organização, pode ocorrer por vários motivos, entre eles: as personalidades dos envolvidos no relacionamento, as expectativas conflituosas, as traições e as promoções. Nesta pesquisa, em especial, optou-se por explorar as promoções, independentemente do seu tipo, como possíveis motivos para a mudança nos relacionamentos de amizade. Portanto, buscou-se compreender, a partir da percepção dos sujeitos entrevistados, a influência da promoção profissional nas relações de amizade entre os pares investigados. A pesquisa se caracteriza por ser um estudo exploratório e, para tanto, utilizou-se da abordagem qualitativa, com uso de entrevistas semi-estruturadas em profundidade e análise de conteúdo. Foram examinadas seis incidências de amizade no trabalho, em quatro empresas distintas. A incidência se caracteriza por uma dupla de pessoas que trabalham na mesma organização. Essas pessoas trabalhavam juntas, sendo pares, e consideravam-se amigas, de modo que, em algum momento, somente uma delas é promovida. A partir da análise dos dados, foram identificadas 12 categorias iniciais, das quais resultaram 4 categorias intermediárias que, por fim, geraram as 2 categorias finais, sendo elas: “Amizade, será?” e “Apenas um Ambiente Agradável”. O estudo possibilitou um maior entendimento e compreensão das relações de amizade nas organizações, permitindo um maior esclarecimento sobre as relações interpessoais existentes nas empresas. A pesquisa traz o questionamento quanto à existência da relação de amizade no local de trabalho, evidenciando os possíveis motivos para a falta de consenso na caracterização deste tipo de relação. Os dados levantados revelam que a amizade no contexto empresarial está intimamente atrelada à organização. / The work environment is a place that can cause the emergence of new friendships. Friends, in the organizational context, can provide support, understanding and assistance. The exchange of experience among those involved is a rich tool to enable the survival in the workplace and learning of how to deal with certain situations in the company (RIORDAN and GRIFFETH, 1995). The lost of a friend at work, according to Sias et. al. (2004), may mean the end of a source of support and help. The breakup of a relationship between friends, in an organization, can occur for many reasons, including: the personalities of those that are involve in the relationship, the conflicting expectations, the betrayals, and the promotions. In this research, in particular, was chosen to explore the promotion, regardless of the type of it, as possible reasons for the change in relationships of a friendship. Therefore, it tries to understand from the perception of the individuals, the influence of the career development in the relations of friendship between the pairs investigated. The research is characterized by an exploratory study and for this, it was used the qualitative approach, using a semi-structured in-depth and content analysis. It was interviewed six incidences of friendship at work, in four separate companies. The incidence is characterized by a pair of people working in the same organization. They worked together, as co-workers and considered themselves as friends, at some point only one of them was promoted. From the analysis of the data, it was identified 12 initial categories of which were located 4 intermediate categories, that eventually led to the 2 final categories, namely: "Friendship, is it?" and "Just a friendly environment." The study suggests a greater knowledge and understanding of the relationship of a friendship in the organizations, allowing greater insight into the interpersonal relationships in the existing companies. The research brings questions about the existence of a relationship of friendship in the workplace, showing possible reasons for the fault of consensus on the characterization of this type of relationship. The data collected show that the friendship in the business is closely linked the organization.

In the following study, we capture managers' experiences of bullying at the workplace, in both social services organizations as well as other human-affairs organizations such as healthcare organizations. The aim of the study is to seek both explanations and understanding of the extent, nature and impact of bullying in the above professions. Furthermore we compare these professions with each other to find out how different organizational and social stressors can affect workers in different ways. In addition, the study focuses on seeking understanding of the manager's own experiences regarding benefits and limitations when it comes to managing various forms of bullying. The present study seeks to answer the following questions through a multistrategic approach consisting of quantitative data in the form of public statistics as well as qualitative data based on six semistructured interviews with social services organizations and other human-affairs organizations. The results of this study show that there is a significant changes over time when it comes to social worker’s and health care worker’s vulnerability to bullying at the workplace. This study has found that organizational and social factors may affect employees' perceived mental stress, which in turn can result in escalating conflicts and an unsustainable working environment. This study therefore emphasizes the importance of managers' social support and prompt action to pay attention to potential bullying situations, both concrete and diffuse.

The relationship between ergonomics of the office workstation and related musculoskeletal disorders in library administrative staff at the Durban University of Technology

Submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master’s Degree in Technology: Chiropractic, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2018. / Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the most common health complaints in the working population and the advancement in technology is a big contributor. Many offices and work spaces have been revolutionised with technological advances, most notably through computer usage, which has become an integral part of life. Intensive use of computers has shown to result in MSDs. The aim of this study was to examine the occurrence of MSDs in a library setting at a University of Technology with the objectives of: determining the prevalence of MSDs in the library staff, to describe the workstations of the staff, and to describe any associations between the workstations and MSDs. This was a cross sectional study at two libraries at a University of Technology with a sample of 59 library staff. The study involved a two part process in which an observational assessment of the library staff was conducted by the researcher with each staff member individually, followed by a questionnaire completed by each participant. The observational checklist was used as a means to assess the ergonomic environment of the library staff. The questionnaire included demographic information, pain-related questions, psychosocial questions, and perception-based questions regarding the participants’ work environment. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (version 24), including descriptive and inferential statistics. Statistics included frequencies, measures of central tendency, and variance and measures of association for example chi-square, Cronbach’s alpha and correlation statistics. The study indicated a prevalence of 96% for some kind of MSD. One out of every two participants had reported that the MSDs or pain interferes with their work. Certain risk factors were evident from the study, namely: inappropriate desk height, reaching for items in the work place, noise, inappropriate chairs and inadequate leg room. The most commonly reported MSDs related to neck (55.9%), shoulders/upper arm (55.9%), head (49.2%), and knees/legs (49.2%). The significant associations that were present included head and neck MSDs with noise and upper arm positioning in worker posture and hand pain. Significant rates of MSDs were reported by the participants with half of them reporting that pain caused interference with their work and only a small portion of participants seeking treatment for these conditions. It would be beneficial for the library staff to become more aware of MSDs and their ergonomic environments both at work and privately and to take corrective action to better equip themselves to mitigate MSDs and seek treatment when needed. / M

Den tekniska utvecklingen i kombination med att organisationer blir allt mer kunskapsintensiva har fött nya arbetssätt som kräver ett nytt sätt att utforma arbetslokaler. Det moderna kontorskonceptet aktivitetsbaserade arbetsplatser innebär att en arbetsplats är utformad efter de arbetsuppgifter som sker inom organisationen. Tidigare forskning och studier visar på flera fördelar med konceptet men få stämmer överens med hur de anställda uppfattar det i praktiken. Därav är syftet med den aktuella studien att undersöka hur anställda inom en kunskapsintensiv organisation uppfattar en aktivitetsbaserad arbetsplats. För att generera en helhetsbild över hur anställda inom en kunskapsintensiv organisation uppfattar en aktivitetsbaserad arbetsplats användes en kvantitativ metod i form av en webbaserad enkät. Respondenterna bestod av anställda på ett företag inom revisionsbranschen och resultatet styrker tidigare forskning inom ämnet där fördelar som bättre kommunikation och samarbete ökar samtidigt som de skapar koncentrationssvårigheter för många anställda. Det visar sig även att anställda anpassar sig olika till det nya konceptet beroende på hur delaktiga de upplever att de fått vara i utformningen av den aktivitetsbaserade arbetsplatsen. Vidare tyder resultatet på att vissa faktorer som är viktiga för att anställda ska trivas på sin arbetsplats såsom att kunna reglera luft-, ljus- och ljudnivå där de arbetar, försvinner i samband med implementeringen av en aktivitetsbaserad arbetsplats. Sammanfattningsvis styrker resultatet tidigare studier om att den aktivitetsbaserade arbetsplatsen inte är lämpad för alla anställda och skulle behöva utvecklas för att gynna alla delar inom en organisation. / Technological development in combination with organizations becoming increasingly knowledge-intensive, has given rise to new ways of working that call for new ways of designing workplaces. The modern office concept activity-based workplaces means that all workplaces are designed according to the overall work tasks that occur within the organization. Earlier research and studies show several advantages with the concept, but few of them correspond to how the employees perceive it in practice. Hence, the purpose of the current study is to investigate how employees in a knowledge-intensive organization perceive an activity-based workplace. To generate an overall picture of how employees in a knowledge-intensive organization perceive an activity-based workplace, a quantitative method in the form of a web-based survey was used. Respondents consisted of employees in an audit firm and the result reinforces previous research on the subject, where benefits such as better communication and collaboration increases, while on the other hand creates concentration difficulties for many employees. It also turns out that employees adapt differently to the new concept depending on how involved they feel they have been in the design of the activity-based workplace. Furthermore, the result indicates that certain factors that are important for employees to appreciate their workplace, such as being able to regulate airing, light and noise levels where they work, disappear due to the implementation of the activity-based workplace. In sum, the study confirms previous research, showing that the activity-based workplace is not suitable for all employees and would need to be further developed and adapted in order to benefit all parts of an organization.

Är arbetsmiljön lika “flashig” som titeln personlig tränare? : En studie om personliga tränare och deras psykosociala arbetsmiljö.

Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur personliga tränare upplever sin psykosociala arbetsmiljö. Vidare används KASAM-teorin för att se vilka faktorer som bidrar till, respektive hindrar en god psykosocial arbetsmiljö. Metoden som användes var enkät med uppföljande intervju. Enkäten innehöll 18 frågor med stängda svarsalternativ. Enkäterna mailades ut till personliga tränare som nått myndig ålder, bosatta i Sverige och hade en anställning på en friskvårdsanläggning. I mailet fick även deltagarna förfrågan om deltagande i den uppföljande intervjun. Utifrån resultatet från enkäten skapades intervjufrågorna. Tre intervjuer gjordes. Resultatet av enkäterna sammanställdes i figurer och analyserades utifrån KASAM-teorin, även intervjuerna analyserades utifrån samma teori. Det framkom i resultatet att deltagarna upplever information och kommunikation mellan dem och chef, organisation och ledning som en bristfällig faktor i arbetsmiljön. Slutsatsen av denna studie har visat att personliga tränare upplever sin psykosociala arbetsmiljö på olika sätt. Det finns olika faktorer som har utvecklingspotential enligt KASAM-teorins tre begrepp. Dock anser majoriteten av deltagarna att de är motiverade och engagerade i sitt arbete vilket är en viktig del för att uppleva begriplighet, hanterbarhet och meningsfullhet. / The purpose of this study is to examine how personal trainers are experiencing their psychosocial work environment. Using the KASAM-theory we identify which factors contribute to the psychosocial work environment, and which factors that doesn’t. The methodology used in this study is a survey with a follow up interview. The survey contained 18 questions with closed answer options. The participants of the survey were personal trainers with the age of 18 years or above, residing in Sweden and with an employment in a wellness center. The survey was sent out by e-mail where participants also received a request to participate in an interview. Based on the results of the survey, the interview questions were created and three interviews were made. The results from the survey were compiled in figures and analyzed by the KASAM-theory. The interviews were also analyzed using the same theory. The results show that participants experience information and communication between them and manager, organization and management as a defective factor in the work environment. The conclusion of this study is that personal trainers experience their psychosocial work environment as very varied. There are different factors that have potential for development according to the KASAM-theory. The majority of participants state that they are motivated and committed to their work, which is an important part of experiencing comprehensiveness, manageability and meaningfulness.

’’Samverkan är inte ett vi och ett dom, utan ett vi’’ En studie på kollektivt lärande i arbetsmiljöarbetet efter en gemensam utbildningsinsats

Denna studie grundas på en systematisk arbetsmiljöutbildning kallad Suntarbetsliv vilket är en gemensam utbildning för chef och skyddsombud. Utgångspunkten för vår studie är att det behövs mer förståelse för en utbildningsinsats samt dess möjligheter. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur chef och skyddsombud i en offentlig organisation arbetar efter en gemensam arbetsmiljöutbildning och om utbildningen genererat i kollektivt lärande. I studiens teoridel presenterar vi följande huvudpunkter: arbetsmiljö, utbildning och kollektivt lärande samt teorier som förklarar hur hinder kan uppstå i lärprocesser. Metoden i studien utgår från en kvalitativ metod. Vi har utfört semistrukturerade intervjuer med tre chefer och tre skyddsombud i en kommun i Dalarna. Resultatet är att en gemensam bas för chefer och skyddsombud skapar förutsättning för kollektivt lärande på organisationens verksamheter. Slutsatserna som dragits baseras på resultatanalysen och är att viljan till att lära startar inom oss själva och därför måste organisationsmål vara tydliga och konkreta så att missförstånd undviks. / This study is based on a systematic work environment education called Suntarbetsliv, which is a joint education for managers and safety representatives. The starting point for our study is that there is a need for more understanding of an educational initiative and its possibilities. The purpose of this study is to investigate how a manager and safety representative in a public organization works after a common work environment education and on education generated in collective learning. In the theory's theory we present the following key points: work environment, education and collective learning. The method in the study is based on a qualitative method. We have conducted semistructured interviews with three managers and three security representatives in a municipal in Dalarna, Sweden. As a result, a common base for managers and security representatives creates the prerequisite for collective learning on the organization's activities. The conclusions taken are based on the results analysis and are that the willingness to learn starts within ourselves, and therefore, organizational goals must be clear and concrete so that

Employee performance evaluation in agile work environment

Agile software development is gaining popularity, with many organizations across several industries migrating to agile methodologies. Employees are the assets of any organization and it is of utmost importance for the organization’s success to make the best use of available human resources. For this, measuring job performance through performance evaluation becomes crucial. This study aims at investigating the limitations of annual performance appraisal when applied to agile work set-up. When the shortcomings in the current appraisal process are identified, corrective measures for eliminating such gaps are listed out as an outcome of this research study with the aim of making the appraisal system more effective. Survey and interviews are primarily used for data collection. Several important observations are noted as a result of our study. The research findings briefly highlight the good aspects of current appraisal system in the agile work set-up. However, the main focus is to illustrate the limitations in annual performance appraisal with evidence. Consequently, proposals for a better appraisal system in agile work set-up are suggested. Some of them include: need for team performance evaluation, informal and less time-consuming appraisal process, timely and anonymous feedback from all stakeholders.

Orientador: Neusa Maria Dal Ri / Banca: Candido Giraldez Vieitez / Banca: Aparecida Neri de Souza / Banca: Marcelo Augusto Totti / Banca: Lalo Watanabe Minto / Resumo: Nos últimos 40 anos, a precarização do trabalho, isto é, a perda e/ou a corrosão de direitos trabalhistas, ampliou-se em diversos países do mundo em decorrência da expansão e aperfeiçoamento de novos processos produtivos, da dinâmica do capitalismo financeiro e das políticas neoliberais, ou seja, em última instância em decorrência da crise do capitalismo. Ao longo dessas quatro décadas, Brasil e Portugal passaram por episódios históricos semelhantes, apesar das peculiaridades dos acontecimentos em cada país: o fim de um período de ditadura civil-militar; a conquista de direitos sociais, políticos e trabalhistas nas décadas de 1970 e 1980; o início, após os anos de 1990, da adoção de políticas neoliberais e a corrosão de diversos direitos trabalhistas e sociais conquistados nos anos de 1980, em especial, pela categoria docente. O principal objetivo deste estudo é examinar o processo de precarização do trabalho dos docentes da rede pública de ensino dos dois países. Trabalhamos com a hipótese de que a precarização do trabalho docente acompanhou o processo de precarização de outras categorias de trabalhadores, e que sua concretização foi possível em virtude das alterações nas legislações trabalhistas e das reformas nas políticas educacionais que regulamentam o trabalho dos professores. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: In the past 40 years the precariousness of work, ie, the loss or corrosion of labor rights has expanded in many countries of the world due to the expansion and improvement of production processes, the dynamics of financial capitalism and neoliberal policies, that is, ultimately as a result of the crisis of capitalism. Along these four decades, Brazil and Portugal had similar historic episodes, despite the peculiarities of the events in each country: the end of a period of civil-military dictatorship; the achievement of social, political and labor in the 1970s and 1980s; the beginning, after the 1990s, the adoption of neoliberal policies and corrosion of various labor and social rights won in the 1980s, in particular, the teaching category. The aim of this study is to examine the precariousness process of work of public school teachers from both countries. We hypothesized that the casualization of teaching followed the process of casualization of other categories of workers, and that their implementation was possible because of changes in labor laws and reforms in educational policies governing the work of teachers. Thus, our focus in this research is to identify the implications of educational reforms in precarious process of teaching in Brazil and Portugal in the 1990s to the present day. For this study we used the bibliographical, documentary and empirical research, through semi-structured interviews. At the end of this research, we conclude that in the last 26 years the teaching category of the two countries experienced an increase in the precariousness of work, in view of wage tightening, an increase in working hours, work flexibility and other factors that affected directly the work of teachers in schools. / Doutor
