A comparative study of burnout among teachers in a Youth Juvenile Rehabilitation center, an Ex model C school, and Public schoolsClayford, Mario January 2010 (has links)
<p>This study examined three schools / namely a Public, Ex model C, and a Youth juvenile rehabilitation school. A non-experimental survey design was used for this study. The sample consisted of 47 educators across the three types of schools. Data was collected by means of two instruments: a demographic questionnaire, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) consisting of three subscales namely / Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Diminished Personal Accomplishment. It was hypothesised that due to the stressful nature of work in disadvantaged and resource lacking schools, as well as the unstable and unsafe environment in certain schools, burnout among educators in Public and Youth juvenile rehabilitation schools will have a higher prevalence rate than educators in Ex model C schools. The study also aimed to identify which various educator demographic variables correlate with high burnout levels. Correlational results of the study found no significant relationships between the three subscales of the MBI and certain educator demographic variables across the three types of schools. The results of an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test revealed a borderline non-significant difference in the Emotional Exhaustion subscale between the Youth juvenile rehabilitation school and Public schools. Post Hoc comparison tests suggested Public school educators in the sample had the highest levels of burnout in terms of Emotional Exhaustion across the three types of schools, while educators in the Youth juvenile rehabilitation schools showed the lowest levels of burnout in terms of Emotional exhaustion. The results of the present study were discussed from the perspective of the Conservation of Resources theory, suggesting resource depletion as a central facet to burnout and how prolonged stress leads to burnout. Future qualitative studies exploring the etiology of burnout was thus recommended.</p>

Elle se situe au croisement entre une géographie urbaine, soucieuse des agencements socio-spatiaux à l’intérieur desquels s’organise l’existence « ordinaire » d’une activité en train de se faire, et une géographie de l’art qui place les trajectoires spatiales des faits artistiques au cœur de l’analyse. Capitale postcoloniale, métropole est-africaine et périphérie d’une « économie mondiale d’archipel », Nairobi est un terrain de la rencontre entre métropolisation et globalisation. Dans le sillon des théories géographiques de la mondialisation, cette recherche propose de documenter et de cartographier les reconfigurations de l’espace artistique qui résultent de ces dynamiques. L’originalité de cette thèse est de rassembler l’ensemble des scènes et des productions artistiques d’une ville sur le dénominateur commun de la dimension spatiale de leurs circulations. Le matériau étudié (discours et curriculum vitae d’artistes, activités et archives de centres d’art) permet de confronter des circulations effectives à des horizons d’accomplissement différenciés, dont la trame est faite d’une ruralité encore prégnante et la connectivité d’une métropole mondialisée. La méthode développée relève de la traçabilité, dont la base est l’enquête par observation. Une exposition, une performance, une bourse de voyage, la visite d’un commissaire d’exposition, d’un collectionneur ou d’un mécène, les circulations quotidiennes d’un artiste et ses modes de socialisation, tous ces déplacements individuels, matériels, idéels et financiers constituent la matière première de la géographie proposée dans cette thèse. Comprise comme l’articulation entre, d’une part, les compétences et les tactiques spatiales des artistes et, d’autre part, les moyens matériels et institutionnels de gestion de la distance, la mobilité artistique interroge les conditions et le sens des déplacements autant que le devenir des acteurs engagés. / This Ph.D. thesis tackles the places and circulations involved in the making of art in a southern metropolis. It is situated at the crossroads of an urban geography concerned with the social and spatial layout through which this “ordinary” activity is organized, and a geographical approach of art that places actors’ trajectories at the heart of the analysis. Capital city in a postcolonial State, East African metropolis and periphery of the “global archipelagic economy”, Nairobi is a case of the encounter between metropolization and globalization. In the trail of the theories on the worlding of material geography, this study aims at documenting and mapping the reconfigurations of art space triggered by these dynamics. The novelty of this thesis is to assemble the entire range of art scenes and products of a city, using the common thread that is the spatial dimension of their circulations. The material studied (artists’ discourse and curriculum vitae; art centres activity and archive) takes on both the measureable circulations of artists while confronting them to their horizon of accomplishment. These are made up of the persistence of strong rural ties and the connectivity of a globally connected city. The method deployed relies on the notion of traceability and is based on a qualitative survey through observation. An exhibition, a performance, a mobility grant, a visiting curator, collector or benefactor, the daily circulations and socializing of an artist: all these individual, material, ideal or financial movements constitute the raw material of this research. The notion of art mobility is here understood as the articulation between artists’ agency and spatial tactics on the on hand, and the material and institutional means of dealing with distance on the other hand. Art mobility questions the conditions, directions and meanings of these movements as much as the growth of the actors engaged.

Att behålla sin anställningsbarhet genom hela livet blir allt viktigare i dagens föränderliga arbetsmarknad. De ökande krav som läggs på individen gällande anställningsbarhet kan vara en anledning till att antalet studenter på Sveriges högskolor stadigt ökar. Men frågan är hur viktigt anställbarhet är för studenters studiemotivation. Motivation delas i huvudsak in i två kategorier, inre och yttre motivation (Deci & Ryan, 2000). I en mer detaljerad indelning skiljer man på sex motivationsfaktorer; to know, toward accomplishment, to experience stimulation samt identified, introjected och external regulation (Vallerand m.fl, 1993). Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka vilka motivationsfaktorer som påverkar en individs val att börja studera på högskola. Vi har även undersökt om motivationen ser annorlunda ut beroende på respondenterna kön och ålder. Empirin samlades in via en webbenkät som var baserad på Academic Motivation Scale (Vallerand m.fl, 1992), där deltagarna fick skatta till vilken grad de ansåg att respektive påstående motiverat dem i valet att börja studera. Även om marginalerna var små så visade vårt resultat att yttre motivationsfaktorer hade störst påverkan på valet att studera. Identified var den motivationsvariabeln som fick högst värde vilket innebär att man gör någonting för att man har bestämt det, även fast det inte är kul. Att man istället ser handlingen som en nödvändighet eller för att man tror att man kan ha nytta av det i framtiden. Vi fann inga signifikanta skillnader mellan könen. Dock visade vår analys att de fanns signifikanta skillnader i motivationen, men dessa hängde samman med respondenternas ålder. / Maintaining one’s employability throughout their lives is becoming increasingly important in today's labor market, which is in constant change. The increasing demands placed on the individual regarding one´s employability can be a reason why the number of students at Swedish colleges is steadily increasing. But the question is how important is the factor employability for students' student motivation. Motivation can be divided into two categories, internal and external motivation (Deci & Ryan, 2000). In a more detailed division, six motivational factors are distinguished; to know, toward accomplishment, to experience stimulation as well as identified, introjected and external regulation (Vallerand et al., 1992). The purpose of this study was to investigate which motivational factors affect an individual's choice to study at college. We have also investigated whether the motivation appears different depending on the respondents' gender and age. The empirical data was collected via a web survey that was based on Academic Motivation Scale (Vallerand et al., 1992), where the participants estimated in what extent they considered each claim to have motivated them in their choice to start studying. Even though the margin was small our result showed that external motivational factors had the greatest impact on the choice to study. Identified was the motivational variable ranked highest, which means to do something because one has decided to do it although it is not fun. That the activity is seen as necessary or because one believes that doing an activity will be useful in future. We found no significant differences between the sexes. However, our analysis showed that there were significant differences in motivation, but these were related to the respondents' age.

Stress coping strategies to prevent burnout amongst primary school teachers in LesothoMakhetha, Motho Isaiah 30 September 2019 (has links)
Teachers are exposed to stressful situations, of which increasing work demands is but one, leading to an alarming escalation of stress and professional burnout as career risks in the teaching profession. The focus of this study is on stress coping strategies to prevent burnout among primary school teachers in Lesotho. Some of the reasons which urged the researcher to carry out this study pertain to the fact that, although teacher burnout is an international concern, limited studies have addressed burnout and stress coping strategies among staff in the teaching service in Lesotho. Prolonged stress is a social problem leading to mental and physical ill health, with an increasing number of teachers leaving the teaching profession in Lesotho due to burnout.
The population for the study was 600 primary school teachers who were engaging in professional development by pursuing a Bachelor of Education in primary education at the National University of Lesotho. This is a part-time programme offered by the University for practising teachers who hold a Diploma in Primary Education. The study followed a mixed-methods research approach, so for the qualitative study, data were collected using semi-structured individual interviews with 20 participants. For the quantitative study, questionnaires were administered to 350 respondents. Qualitative data were analysed using an inductive approach. Quantitative data were analysed using multiple regression, Chi-square and t-test.
Key findings revealed that variables such as work overload, organisational climate and role conflict are predictors of burnout among teachers. Other variables predicting teacher burnout pertain to learner indiscipline, teacher personality and insufficient teacher remuneration. Burnout attacks career motivation. It also causes aggressive and violent behaviour among teachers. Teachers buffer stress and prevent burnout by employing constructive, less constructive and neutral stress coping strategies. The Lesotho Ministry of Education and Training can alleviate stress and prevent burnout among teachers by clarifying their job descriptions, instituting formal induction programmes for new teachers and ensuring that teacher salaries are on par with equivalent professional careers. / Onderwysers word aan stresvolle situasies blootgestel, waarvan toenemende werkseise net een is; dit lei tot 'n kommerwekkende styging van stres en professionele uitbranding as loopbaanrisiko's in die onderwysberoep. Sommige redes wat die navorser genoop het om die studie te doen, hou verband met die feit dat alhoewel onderwyseruitbranding 'n internasionale bekommernis is, is beperkte studies gedoen om uitbranding en strategieë om stres te hanteer onder onderwysers in Lesotho gedoen. Langdurige stres is 'n sosiale probleem wat tot geestelike en fisiese swak gesondheid kan lei, met 'n toenemende aantal onderwysers wat die beroep verlaat in Lesotho as gevolg van uitbranding.

The influence of work stress and work support on burnout in public hosptial nurses.Spooner-Lane, Rebecca January 2004 (has links)
Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) transactional stress-strain-coping theory provides the theoretical background for the present thesis. This theory proposes that strain (i.e., burnout) occurs when demands (i.e., work stressors) exceed coping resources (e.g., social support). The current thesis explores the influence of social support on the stress-burnout relationship in nurses. A sample of Australian nurses working across three public hospitals in Brisbane's metropolitan district were recruited to investigate the nature and level of burnout experienced by nurses. Burnout is characterised by emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and reduced personal accomplishment. The present research addresses gaps in the empirical literature by investigating the key work stressors experienced by Australian nurses and by establishing nurses' referent levels of work stress, social support, and burnout. In addition, the research explores the complex relationships between work stress, social support and burnout. The majority of nursing studies have failed to consider how support from within the nurses' work environment mitigates burnout. The present research builds upon previous nursing literature by examining the "main&qout; and "buffering" effect hypotheses. Studies have consistently found support for the main effect model, however the hypothesis that social support buffers the negative effects of stress has resulted in highly conflicting findings. Some theorists (Cohen & Wills, 1985; Cutrona & Russell, 1990) propose that the buffering effects of social support will only be found if there is an adequate match between the needs elicited by the stressful event and the type of support an individual receives. The present study extends the stress or support matching theory by exploring the matching between specific types of stressors to specific types (i.e., emotional and instrumental) and sources (i.e.,supervisor and coworkers) of support. Cutrona (1990) suggests that the controllability of a stressor is the primary dimension in determining an appropriate match between stressors and types of support. Cutrona proposes that controllable stressful events elicit needs for instrumental support and uncontrollable events elicit needs for emotional support. Heeding Cutrona's advice, independent raters classified nurses' work stressors as controllable or uncontrollable stressful events prior to investigating the stressor-support matching theory. Three sequential studies were undertaken to explore the variables of interest to this research program. In Study 1, focus groups were conducted with 68 nurses (11 males, 34 females) from two public hospitals. The qualitative data was subjected to content analysis. The findings revealed that Australian nurses are exposed to a range of job-specific stressors (i.e., Job Conditions, Job Uncertainty, Interpersonal Conflict and a Lack of Professional Recognition and Support) and generic role stressors (i.e., Role Overload, Role Conflict and Role Ambiguity). The findings prompted the research to utilise Wolfgang's (1988) Health Professions Stress Inventory to measure nurses' job-specific stressors and Osipow and Spokane's (1987) Occupational Roles Questionnaire to measure nurses' role stressors in Study 2. The findings from Study 1 also confirmed that the way nurses perceive work support is consistent with current social support literature. Nurses indicated that their two main sources of support were their coworkers and their supervisor. Furthermore, nurses discussed social support from a multidimensional perspective, recognising different types of support that were broadly classified as emotional and instrumental support. Based on these findings, the researcher developed a work support measure specifically for the purpose of this research. Items were taken from established social support scales and were slightly modified to ensure that they were contextually relevant to nurses. In Study 2, 273 nurses (38 males, 235 females) completed a multi-measure questionnaire. While there was sufficient research evidence to indicate that the Occupational Roles Questionnaire (Osipow & Spokane, 1987) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach, Jackson, & Leiter, 1996) possess adequate levels of reliability and validity, less was known about Wolfgang's Health Professions Stress Inventory and the work support scales designed for this research program. Factor analysis of the Health Professions Stress Inventory revealed a four-factor solution: Lack of Professional Recognition and Support, Patient Care Uncertainty, Job Conditions, and Interpersonal Conflict. Cronbach's coefficient alphas ranged from .62 to .83. Factor analysis of the Coworker Support Scale revealed a two-factor solution, representing emotional and instrumental support. Cronbach's coefficient alphas for the Emotional Coworker Support and Instrumental Coworker Support were .92 and .88 respectively. Contrary to expectations, factor analysis of the Supervisor Support Scale revealed a one-factor solution. It was therefore deemed appropriate to examine Supervisor Support as a unidimensional construct in subsequent analyses. Cronbach's coefficient alpha for the Supervisor Support scale was .96. Overall, the results from Study 2 provided supporting evidence to suggest that the measures used in the current research program were psychometrically sound. In Study 3, the data collected in Study 2 was subjected to further statistical analysis. The findings from Study 3 indicated that overall, the sample of Australian nurses reported low to moderate levels of work stress, moderate levels of work support and moderately high levels of burnout. For Emotional Exhaustion, predictor variables accounted for 42.2% of the total variance. Sociodemographic factors explained a small but significant proportion of the variance (2.7%). Work stressors however, were the main predictors of Emotional Exhaustion, explaining 41.5% of the total variance. Role Overload, Job Conditions and Role Conflict were the main determinants of Emotional Exhaustion, with Role Overload explaining most of the variance. For Depersonalisation, the predictor variables accounted for 34.2% of the total variance. Sociodemographic factors (11.5%) and work stressors (33.6%) both explained a significant proportion of the variance. Role Conflict and Patient Care Uncertainty were the main determinants of Depersonalisation, with Role Conflict explaining most of the variance. For Personal Accomplishment, Role Conflict and Role Ambiguity explained 20.5% of the total variance, with Role Conflict explaining most of the variance. Sociodemographic factors and job-specific stressors were not significant Predictors of Personal Accomplishment. Evidence for main effects of work support on burnout were limited. There was no evidence to suggest that work support had significant main effects on Emotional Exhaustion. Supervisor Support had a small, but significant main effect on Depersonalisation (â = -.15, p < .05) and Personal Accomplishment (â = -.24, p < .01). There was no evidence of main effects for Emotional and Instrumental Coworker Support. Furthermore, the present research found no significant evidence to support the buffering effect of work support on burnout. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Engineers and scientists have to cope with the challenges of a complex work environment. This study investigated the relationship between burnout, coping and sense of coherence amongst engineers and scientists.
The Maslach Burnout Inventory, COPE and Sense of Coherence questionnaires were used. The study was conducted with 272 engineers and scientists at a global petro-chemical company with its head office based in South Africa.
A theoretical relationship was determined and an empirical investigation provided evidence of such a relationship. This study examined the relationship between spiritual intelligence (SI), emotional intelligence (EI), coping ability (CA), and burnout (BO) among humanitarian aid workers in Zimbabwe. A convenience sample of 296 (53% males and 47% females) humanitarian aid workers was used in the study. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were used to explore the contribution of SI, EI, and CA to the burnout. Results indicated that SI, EI, and CA are all significantly related to Burnout and its dimensions of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalisation (DP) and personal accomplishment (PA) in humanitarian aid workers. CA and EI significantly contributed to the variation of scores in EE and DP whereas SI did not. However, all the three variables significantly contributed to the variation in PA. Gender, age, employment status and tenure in NGO had no significant relationships with EE, DP, or PA whereas contract type, length of service, educational level and nature of work were associated with statistically significant differences in EE, DP, and PA. The research contributed to the understanding of burnout among aid workers in Zimbabwe. Humanitarian organisations can use the findings to come up with scientifically backed recruitment, selection, training, and staff wellbeing policies and programmes that help to reduce the impact of burnout in the humanitarian aid sector. / Psychology / D. Text in Afrikaans / Because of the variety of relationships which exist between transitive verbs and their
objects, all direct objects are not comparable with one another.
One class of object, however, which stands by itself and which is of considerable
interest, is the OBJECT OF RESULT. Because of the particular relation which exists
between object and transitive verb in resulting constructions, we have here an unique
class of direct object.
The resulting construction is therefore, in the first instance a relation construction. This
specific relation between transitive verb and object is mainly determined by the
presence of or absence of certain inherent distinctive characteristics by transitive verbs
and which play a determining role in identifying OBJECTS OF RESULT.
From this study it is also clear that there is a semantic value present in transitive verbs
(that can combine with objects of result) which has not been observed or distinguished
by lexicographers and grammarians until recently. / Omdat voorwerpe van sinne in 'n verskeidenheid van betrekkinge met (oorganklike)
werkwoorde kan staan, is alle direkte voorwerpe nie almal in alle opsigte vergelykbaar
met mekaar nie.
Waarskynlik die interessantste voorwerp in hierdie verskeidenheid is die
RESULTATIEWE VOORWERP. As gevolg van die besondere verhouding wat daar
bestaan tussen hierdie voorwerp en die HW, het ans hier te make met 'n unieke tipe
direkte voorwerp wat kan aanspraak maak op 'n eie bestaansreg as 'n subkategorie
van die hoofkategorie: Direkte Voorwerpe.
Die resulterende konstruksie is dus, in die eerste plek, 'n verhoudingskonstruksie.
Hierdie spesifieke verhouding tussen die HW en die voorwerp word grootliks bepaal
deur die aan- of afwesigheid van sekere inherente distinktiewe kenmerke wat by
oorganklike werkwoorde voorkom en wat 'n bepalende rol speel by die ontstaan van
en identifisering van RESUL TATIEWE VOORWERPE.
Uit hierdie ondersoek sal verder blyk dat daar 'n semantiese waarde by oorganklike
werkwoorde is wat tot dusver nag nie deur taalkundiges/woordeboekmakers of
woordverklaarders onderskep en onderskei is nie. Oorganklike werkwoorde kan dus
fyner gedefinieer word ten opsigte van hul verbindbaarheid, al dan nie, met

Denna kvantitativa forskningsrapport inriktar sig på hur elever uppfattar sin egen matematiska förmåga, vilken grad av tilltro eleverna har till sin förmåga och hur de presterar i matematikämnet med särskilt fokus på metod- och problemlösningsuppgifter. Den litteratur som ligger till grund för studien baseras på vad det innebär att tro på sin egen förmåga, förmågan att kunna värdera sig själv och sin förmåga samt matematikuppgifters betydelse för skapandet av självuppfattning och tilltro till den egna förmågan. Den forskningsmetod som används för att kunna besvara studiens frågeställningar är av kvantitativ karaktär och består av ett självskattningsformulär där syftet är att synliggöra elevernas grad av tilltro till den egna matematiska förmågan samt ett tillhörande matematiktest där eleverna löser metod- och problemlösningsuppgifter. Lösningsfrekvensen av de olika uppgiftstyperna analyseras i relation till elevernas grad av tilltro. Studien genomsyras av ett socialpsykologiskt perspektiv och resultatet teoretiseras genom att utgå från den socialpsykologiska teorin om själveffektivitet samt symbolisk interaktionism. För att analysera sambanden har materialet även analyserats ur ett statistiskt perspektiv genom analysverktyget SPSS. Resultatet av studien visar att det verkar finnas ett samband mellan elevernas grad av tilltro till sin matematiska förmåga och hur de presterar i både metod- och problemlösningsuppgifter. / This quantitative study focuses on how students perceive their own mathematical ability, what degree of confidence students have in their ability and how they perform in mathematical tasks that focuses on method and problem solving ability. The literature underlying the study is based on the importance of believing in your own ability, the ability to assess yourself and your ability, and the importance of mathematics to maintain and create opportunity to develop self-perception and confidence in your own ability. The research method used to answer the questions of the study is of a quantitative nature and consists of a self-assessment form that aims to visualize the students' degree of confidence in their own mathematical ability and a mathematics test where students solve method and problem solving tasks. The dissolution rate of the different types of tasks is analyzed in relation to the students' degree of confidence. The study is pervaded by a social psychological perspective and the result is theorized by starting from the social psychological theory of self-efficacy as well as symbolic interactionism. To analyze the relationships, the material has also been analyzed from a statistical perspective, using the SPSS analyzing tool. The result of the study shows that there seems to be a connection between the students' degree of confidence in their mathematical ability and how they perform in both method and problem solving tasks.
