Die multimodale Darstellung von Mitleid in Erzählaktivitäten / The multimodal display of sympathy in storytellings

Kupetz, Maxi January 2009 (has links)
The thesis explores the verbal, para-verbal and nonverbal resources which speakers deploy in everyday conversation to display sympathy in the course of the social activity storytelling. The analysis draws upon Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics and is based on video and audio data of German talk-in-interaction. It will be shown which resources can be used by storytellers to make affective reactions relevant (e.g. gaze, eye brow movements, rhetorical devices) and which resources are deployed by recipients to display sympathy (e.g. interjections with specific pitch contours, ‘poor+N’-constructions, hand gestures). It will also be demonstrated how participants manage the transition from problematic phases of storytelling to subsequent talk, e.g. by contextualizing it as more humorous. Furthermore, participants provide access to their meta-communicative knowledge of when and how to display sympathy appropriately by making it linguistically relevant in the interaction. Thus, from these observations, it is possible to assume certain feeling and/or display rules for this specific kind of emotive involvement. The overall findings of this study are that a) it seems that a specific quality of the relationship to the ‘consequential figure’ (Maynard 1997) is a prerequisite for displaying sympathy, and b) social closeness may be created locally within the interaction through the affect display.

Type D personality is a risk factor for psychosomatic symptoms and musculoskeletal pain among adolescents : a cross-sectional study of a large population-based cohort of Swedish adolescents

Conden, Emelie, Leppert, Jerzy, Ekselius, Lisa, Åslund, Cecilia January 2013 (has links)
Background: Type D personality, or the "distressed personality", is a psychosocial factor associated with negative health outcomes, although its impact in younger populations is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Type D personality and the associations between Type D personality and psychosomatic symptoms and musculoskeletal pain among adolescences. Methods: A population-based, self-reported cross-sectional study conducted in Vastmanland, Sweden with a cohort of 5012 students in the age between 15-18 years old. The participants completed the anonymous questionnaire Survey of Adolescent Life in Vastmanland 2008 during class hour. Psychosomatic symptoms and musculoskeletal pain were measured through index measuring the presence of symptoms and how common they were. DS14 and its two component subscales of negative affectivity (NA) and social inhibition (SI) were measured as well. Results: There was a difference depending on sex, where 10.4% among boys and 14.6% among girls (p = < 0.001) were defined as Type D personality. Boys and girls with a Type D personality had an approximately 2-fold increased odds of musculoskeletal pain and a 5-fold increased odds of psychosomatic symptoms. The subscale NA explained most of the relationship between Type D personality and psychosomatic symptoms and musculoskeletal pain. No interaction effect of NA and SI was found. Conclusions: There was a strong association between Type D personality and both psychosomatic symptoms and musculoskeletal pain where adolescent with a type D personality reported more symptoms. The present study contributes to the mapping of the influence of Type D on psychosomatic symptoms and musculoskeletal pain among adolescents.

An attributional analysis of counterproductive work behavior (CWB) in response to occupational stress

Goh, Angeline 01 June 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of hostile attribution style (HAS) on the processes linking job stressors and CWB. Self and peer data were collected via online questionnaires from employed participants recruited from undergraduate classes and non-student employees. Using data from 147 dyads of employees and coworkers, the effects of HAS on three areas were examined: the influence of HAS on the appraisal of psychosocial (incivility, interactional justice, and interpersonal conflict) and nonsocial (organizational constraints and workload) stressors; HAS as a moderator of the link between stressors and CWB; and HAS as mediator of the link between CWB and the individual difference variables of negative affectivity (NA), trait anger, and Machiavellianism. Regarding appraisals, HAS was more strongly related to psychosocial stressors than to workload (nonsocial stressor). However, results regarding the comparisons of the HAS-psychosocial stressor correlations with the HAS-organizational constraints (nonsocial stressor) correlations were mixed. Moreover, contrary to what was hypothesized, correlations of HAS with interpersonal constraints and job context constraints were not significantly different in magnitude. HAS was shown to moderate the relationship between CWB and the stressors of interpersonal conflict and organizational constraints. Individuals high on HAS engaged in more CWB when stressors were high, whereas individuals low on HAS engaged in low levels of CWB overall. HAS partially mediated the relationship between NA and CWB, in addition to the relationship between trait anger and CWB. It fully mediated the relationship between Machiavellianism and CWB. The influence of Machiavellianism on the occupational stress process also was explored. It was expected that high Machiavellians would appraise and respond to stressors in a negative fashion. However, contrary to what was expected, Machiavellianism was positively associated with informational justice and negatively related to incivility and CWB. Furthermore, it was negatively associated with NA and HAS. An alternative explanation for the results regarding Machiavellianism was presented. Although all hypotheses regarding the effects of HAS were partially supported, results of this study were generally demonstrative of the merits of including attributional processes (i.e., hostile attribution style) in CWB research within the occupational stress framework.

Moderating effect of negative affectivity on the job satisfaction-turnover intentions and justice-turnover intentions relationships

Mazzola, Joseph J 01 June 2006 (has links)
Although many people experiences dissatisfaction with their jobs at some time or another, not all of them quit their jobs because of it. Why do some employees simply continue to work in an unsatisfying environment? In this study, it is hypothesized that part of the reason is based on the individual's personality, specifically their scores on positive and negative affectivity. Results showed that neither NA nor PA moderated the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intentions/job search, contrary to previous literature. This study suggests that the moderation effect of personality on this relationship, either does not exist or is more complicated than formerly thought.

Work wellness at a higher education institution in South Africa / Susanna Elizabeth Coetzee

Coetzee, Susanna Elizabeth January 2004 (has links)
With the introduction of positive psychology the aim with organisational psychology shifted to finding the 'happy/productive' worker and focusing more on work wellness. Historically, working in a higher education institution has generally been considered relatively stress-free and highly satisfying. However, recently the world of work has started to change drastically, which also holds true for higher education institutions. Since 1994, the democratic post apartheid government of South Africa has attempted to redress the injustices of the apartheid era. One of the focus areas of redress is the educational system. This has resulted in a restructuring of the broad higher education system, which implies consequences for the governance of all tertiary institutions. This research focused on the total spectrum of wellness - from unwell-being (e.g. burnout and stress) to well-being (e.g. work engagement). The moderating effects of organisational commitment and affectivity were investigated in order to establish a work wellness profile that will serve as basis for a wellness programme within the work environment. The objectives of this research were to standardise the MBI-GS, UWES and ASSET for employees of higher education institutions as well as to develop and test a causal model of work wellness for this specific group. The research findings are set out as four separate articles, each consisting of a brief literature overview and an empirical study. A cross-sectional design, whereby a sample is drawn from a population at a particular point in time, was used. The data for this study were collected from 372 academic and administrative employees at a higher education institution in South Africa. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS), Cognitive Weariness Scale (CWS), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), An Organisational Stress Screening Tool (ASSET), Job Characteristics Scale (JCS), Affectometer 2 (AFM) and a biographical questionnaire were administered. Descriptive statistics, correlations, analysis of variance, canonical analysis, multiple regression analysis and structural equation modelling were used. Structural equation modelling confirmed a four-factor model of burnout consisting of exhaustion, cynicism, professional efficacy, and cognitive weariness. The scales showed acceptable internal consistencies. Analysis of variance revealed differences in burnout for groups with different languages and different years of experience at the institution. A three-factor model of the three UWES dimensions of vigour, dedication and absorption was confirmed. Practically significant differences were found in engagement levels of employees in different language groups, those with different years of experience at the institution and between academic and administrative employees. Acceptable construct validity and internal consistency were found for the ASSET. Compared to normative data, the participants reported significantly high levels of physical ill health, psychological outcomes of stress, and perceived lack of commitment from the organisation. Analysis of variance revealed differences in occupational stress levels for all the biographical variables tested. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the factors that predict burnout and work engagement. The results showed that engagement can be considered a positive indicator of employee wellness and that job resources and positive affectivity contribute to engagement. Work engagement was related to low burnout scores, while professional efficacy was associated with work engagement. Burnout and physical and emotional strain are negative indicators of employee wellness, while overload, negative affectivity and low levels of primitive affectivity contribute to burnout. Recommendations for the organisations and future research were made. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004

The issue of identity in Sylvie Germain's novels : a semiotic approach

Bankir, Seldag 21 December 2017 (has links)
This work aims to explore the meaning of identity in the novels of Sylvie Germain, who is an important author of contemporary French literature. The novelistic universe of the author que stions the human existence and encourages the reader to ask questions about life and identity. By putting into play the fictional life of her characters, Sylvie Germain denounces the constraints of the modern and contemporary world that cause identity disorders in people. The novels of our corpus ("The Song of False lovers ", "Magnus", "Hidden Lives") are met by this issue of identity that marks the whole journey of actors-characters. In our study, we propose to highlight the different aspects of the problem of identity in a semiotic perspective. By examining the affective, cognitive and modal features of the fictional characters, we focus on their roles and attitudes in order to identify change and permanence in their identity construction. Our study is based in particular on the analysis of "life forms" which determine the modes of existence and perseverance of the characters in their course of life marked by uncertainty and obstacles. Our analysis seeks to determine the disturbances that affect the identity construction of the characters. Through the semiotic analysis that allows us to study the different dimensions of the novelistic discourse-narrative, figurative, affective, enunciative-we propose to capture the significant elements concerning the configuration of identity in Sylvie Germain’s novel universe.

Fetzner, Maria Amélia de Mesquita January 2010 (has links)
In the IS area, several theories and approaches seek to explain the vicissitudes of implementation processes of IT/IS. The technology acceptance models have been the main theoretical influence on the area of studies at individual level. Despite their relevance, such models do not approach an essential aspect of the human experience, which is the affective dimension. In this thesis, we approach this gap with the goal of understanding the main expressions of affectivity, resistance, and individual change associated with the implementation of new information system in organizations. IT/IS implementation always brings about expectations of change in the organization environment and in the individuals, and in this situation many institutional, organizational, social and individual factors mix, adding complexity to the process. The conceptual framework was based on theoretical contributions in a multidisciplinary approach, providing elements for a broad understanding of the issue and situating the analysis of the individual scope of change from the perspective of the organizational context. The field research was done in four IT companies and their respective clients. The approach used was qualitative, with an interpretative orientation and an exploratory objective. Two fields were studied in the post-implementation context, and two in the implementation context. Field no. 1 consisted of research with a group of clients from a supplier of a Business Intelligence (BI) system, in the clothing retail sector, manufacturing, insurance, and agribusiness. Field no. 2, consisted of researching a cargo moving company, field no. 3 researched a law firm, and field no. 4 a PET SHOP, all clients of integrated management systems suppliers known as ERPs (Enterprise Resource Planning). The methods varied among the experiments and consisted mostly of interviews and case study; the participants were employees and managers directly involved with the systems. The fields were analyzed independently and integrated later in a global field. Research results showed the integration of affection, cognition, and behavior in people‟s answers to IT/IS implementation. A new system does not have identical meanings for different people with regard to the many aspects of an implementation (results, context, process, participants). It may generate countless configurations of reactions, affections and interpretations, and demand changes that will or will not imply changes in the worldview of those involved. The main changes in the individual area include work, intrapersonal and interpersonal changes. Affectivity in IT/IS implementation may show at the individual or group level, as emotions, states of mind, emotional work, and feelings, vary in the course of time and are expressed as positive, negative or ambivalent qualities, with self-expression or instrumental objectives. We found that resistance did not happen in every case nor, when it did, differed among individuals. Many personal and situational factors, among them the nature and demands of the change associated with IT/IS interacted and contributed to different configurations. Contributions, limits, and suggestions for future research are presented in the end.

[en] THE ANALYTIC LISTENING: CORPORAL, AFFECTIVE AND SENSORY DIMENSION IN THE TRANSFERENCE / [pt] A ESCUTA ANALÍTICA: A DIMENSÃO CORPORAL, AFETIVA E SENSORIAL NA TRANSFERÊNCIA

SOLANGE MARIA SERRANO FUCHS 06 August 2018 (has links)
It includes the body that shows traces of a history that is kept alive and active. Intonation, rhythm, pauses, silence and looks may reveal more than speech. The analyst/patient meeting enables psychic printed impressions – from bodily sensations felt during a phase prior to word - to be revealed and implied. The analyst sensible listening to these multiple affective bodily expressions represents an important enlargement in the investigation field of the analytical experience. The reflection developed in this work stems from the bodily dimension that is fundamental in any analysis, but which has been emphasized mainly when treating patients who have difficulty expressing themselves orally.

2016. 117f. - Dissertação (Mestrado) – Universidade Federal do Ceará, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Psicologia, Fortaleza (CE), 2016. / This research deals with the affectivity in the study of accessibility conditions the deaf students face in academic environment. This research goes towards the emerging paradigm of science, which means that its intention is to produce a knowledge clearly committed to the objective of enhancing social transformation. The questions that started up this study were: What makes the university an accessible environment to the deaf student? Are the inclusion policies sufficient to make the university an accessible place? Is the place an important dimension in the exclusion-inclusion dialectic of deaf people? What is the relationship between Affectivity an Accessibility? To answer these questions, our general objective is to investigate the relation Affection (considering BOMFIM’s Place Esteem) and Accessibility. The method used in this journey was the Affective Maps Generator Instrument (IGMA) and the Participant Observation. The data seized from reality were analyzed using the Thematic Content Analysis of Laurence Bardin in conjunction with the theoretical contributions of Espinosa, Vygotsky and Sawaia. The IGMA was applied on deaf students of Benfica campus from Ceará’s Federal University in a period of eight (8) months in which the researcher kept close contact with the deaf community. At the end, we concluded that, in order to promote psychosocial well-being of deaf students, the recognition demand of their culture and identity is as necessary as the materialization of assertive policies and that the affective indicator contrast enables sad passions and passive joys in university to turn into affection action giving more clarity to the deaf in the choices of good encounters, which is what, based on Sawaia, I call the ethics of accessibility.
