Jornal Pessoal: uma metalinguagem jornalística na Amazônia / Jornal Pessoal: a journalistic metalanguage in the Amazon

Amorim, Célia Regina Trindade Chagas 09 June 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T18:17:19Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Celia Regina Trindade Chagas Amorim.pdf: 55739492 bytes, checksum: f3ccf33de1f819555df1a55ca3454db0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-06-09 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This work is entitled Jornal Pessoal: a journalistic metalanguage in the Amazon. The object studied is the alternative journal of the sociologist and journalist Lúcio Flávio Pinto. The periodical has been released for 20 years, in Belém, state of Pará. The hypothesis examined is that the journal presents journalistic metalanguage based in the principles of street journalism truth, ethic and liberty as well as of its practice. The generator problem of this investigation arose from the following question: why turning to the study of journalistic metalanguage through an alternative journal if the general press, considered as a journalism paradigm, contains metalinguistic elements? The main objective is to reflect on the importance of alternative media in the process of construction of a journalism effectively committed to society. The theoretical and interpretative basis involved the concept of metalanguage, a second language which analyses the first one, the object language. The theorists studies in the international field like Habermas, John Downing, Carnap, Jakobson, Barthes, Jesús Martín-Barbero and Nelson Traquina, besides Brazilian researchers like Bernardo Kucinski, Ciro Marcondes Filho, Perseu Abramo and Nelson Werneck Sodré were fundamental to explain, in the light of the communication theories, the press language and history, the phases and the proposed objectives. The methodology followed a qualitativedescriptive analysis of the periodical production, mainly the one emphasizing the journalistic language in its 20 years existence. From the 400 editions published, 40 were selected, that is, 10% of each group of 100 samples were extracted, in order to design a profile of the metajournalism of the Jornal Pessoal. This work is also included in the Communication area, a Journalism subfield, more specifically related to alternative media. At present, this expression has been more used in the researchers meetings in Brazil and abroad due to the possibility to shelter several alternative objects. The results achieved are relevant to the Communication field, once they present a new perspective to the alternative media, which must be free of prejudices as to associate those means to a minor, marginal, type of press. They also show the need of studies emphasizing the history of the press aiming at understanding the transformation process through which the journalistic production passed in the capitalism context, and finally, the singularity of this PhD research which was to examine, through the journalistic metalanguage expressed by an alternative journal, the excessive ethic nature deviations in the great Amazon press, mainly in Belém, state of Pará, which compromise the consolidation of a journalism concerned with the citizen / Este trabalho tem como título Jornal Pessoal: uma metalinguagem jornalística na Amazônia. O objeto estudado é o jornal alternativo do sociólogo e jornalista Lúcio Flávio Pinto.

Arce Barceló, María Esther 27 October 2011 (has links)
¿Cómo sabremos a qué objetivo obedece? / Mass media and neoliberal globalization are closely linked. It is thus urgent to reflect on the means available to the citizens to demand greater ethics and truth from the Mass media, through a code of deontology enabling journalists to act according to their conscience and also through a description based on the following questions:How does a media, or a communication project, situate itself in that context? How will we know which objectives it pursues? We built up that study around La Jornada, focusing on the origin, means and objectives of the newspaper, its ownership, structure, management and characteristics. We also studied its employees’ working conditions, its credit lines, working routines and relation with social movements as well as its distribution, sales and circulation figures, not to forget its website traffic, readers’ profile, reading habits, and its impact.

Civic Advocacy Journalism in Practice: Reports on the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit

Raposas, Marites January 2010 (has links)
With the changing political, economic, cultural and environmental landscape of global societies, journalistic writings on social development issues and concerns have become more relevant in recent times. Through civic advocacy journalism (CAJ), the agenda and programs of social development movements, civil society groups, international development organizations and non-government organizations are promoted and advanced. It is essential to understand the forms and representations of CAJ in practice, concepts and theories in the light of its relevance to media practice and to society at large. However, there is very little literature on the scope and extent of CAJ knowledge and practice. A researcher needs to look into actual practice and connect this with available literature to establish the application of CAJ. For this study, a qualitative content analysis method was used to assess CAJ practice in online print media reports at the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit.

Independent Voices: Third Sector Media Development and Local Governance in Saskatchewan

2015 March 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines nonprofit, co-operative, and volunteer media enterprises operating outside Saskatchewan’s state and commercial media sectors. Drawing on historical research and contemporary case studies, I take the position that this third sector of media activity has played, and continues to play, a much-needed role in engaging marginalized voices in social discourse, encouraging participation in community-building and local governance, fostering local-global connectedness, and holding power to account when the rights and interests of citizens are jeopardized. The cases studied reveal a surprising level of resiliency among third sector media enterprises; however, the research also finds that the challenges facing third sector media practitioners have deepened considerably in recent decades, testing this resiliency. A rapid withdrawal of media development support from the public sphere has left Saskatchewan’s third sector media at a crossroads. The degree of the problem is largely unknown outside media practitioner circles, even among civil society allies. I argue this relates to the lack of recognition of nonprofit, co-operative, and volunteer media as a distinct third sector, thus obscuring the global impact when hundreds of small undertakings shed staff and reduce operations in multiple locations across Canada. At the same time, there is increasing recognition that such media have the potential to fill a void left by commercial and state media organizations that have retreated from local communities. Accordingly, this dissertation makes the case for a coordinated media development strategy as a component of the social economy. The challenge is to build useful mechanisms of support among civil society allies that do not replicate oppressive donor-client relationships that are all too common in the arena of governmental and private sector support. While never simple, the opportunities and social benefits are considerable when citizens devise the means to participate in the creation of a robust, diverse media ecology.

BRASIL DE FATO: TRAJETÓRIA, CONTRADIÇÕES E PERSPECTIVAS DE UM JORNAL POPULAR ALTERNATIVO

Moura, Ana Maria Straube de Assis 31 March 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-03T12:31:02Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Ana Maria Straube.pdf: 532976 bytes, checksum: 70d59e38539fc6e4752f1eee44d50a2e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-03-31 / Investigation on the left-wing weekly newspaper Brasil de Fato, built by a group of leaders of social movements and representatives of civil society organizations, journalists, lawyers, artists, politically identified and joint to discuss a proposal submitted by the Landless Rural Workers Movement. Brasil de Fato was launched in January 2003 with the prospect of becoming a mass vehicle and completed six years of existence resisting adversities. The central objective is to analyze the process of construction and consolidation of this popular alternative newspaper since its design. Its trajectory is recovered in order to understanding not only the difficulties of maintaining a project with this profile, but also to analyze the internal and external contradictions that caused the changes in its original proposal. The methodology used for this purpose was bibliography research, semi-structured interviews with leaders and analysis of content. It was concluded that while the newspaper has faced a series of adverse conditions that justify the failure of its original proposal, but the characteristics of a social movement newspaper was already present in Brasil de Fato since its formation, especially regarding Landless Movement's conceptions for the newspaper.(AU) / Pesquisa sobre o semanário de esquerda Brasil de Fato, construído por um coletivo de dirigentes de movimentos sociais e representantes de organizações da sociedade civil, jornalistas, advogados e artistas, identificados politicamente e reunidos a partir de uma proposta apresentada pelo Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra.

The Journalistic Practices of Alternative Media in Taiwan : The Analysis of News & Market

Lu, Yi Shih Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis takes the notion of rhizome as a research approach to explore the journalistic practices of alternative media in Taiwan. Considering time limitation and the purpose of this research, the researcher adopts the methods of depth interview and participable observation to examine the journalistic practice of research object in this thesis—“News & Market.” At the same time, the researcher looks into journalistic practices via Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of “rhizome” and “becoming.” According to the study, along with the context change, News & Market constantly adjusts its organizational structure and the way it produces news. However, since journalists cannot often reach an agreement altogether, the organizational conflicts would gradually increase. For now, News & Market manages to reduce the possibilities of organizational conflicts through the ways of “joint gatekeeping production mode” and “institutional operation of the organization.” Moreover, the study indicates that social media platform, taking the example of Facebook, has a huge influence on the news production of News & Market. At last, because of the growing influence of context change, the journalists of News & Market show different cognition on their role positions. When there is the time of different points of view, the journalists would cross the border to provide different ideas and develop the journalistic practices that are different from the past.

“Don't trust the media – it costs lives.” : A corpus linguistic study of the mainstream media criticism and deplatforming discussion in the Swedish far-right alternative media

Ljunggren Forsberg, Vilma January 2021 (has links)
This study investigates how the Swedish far-right alternative media's criticize the Swedish mainstream media and discusses the contemporary phenomenon of “deplatforming”. Deplatforming refers to when a user or uploaded content is banned from a social media platform. The study investigates linguistic features of these questions, through the method of corpus linguistics and the software AntConc. Altogether, 72515 tokens from four Swedish online far-right alternative media are analyzed, showing that the far-right alternative media criticize the mainstream media in a highly politicized way, posing a binary antagonist relationship where power is a central theme. Regarding deplatforming, the study shows how the Swedish far-right alternative media focus on deplatforming especially when it regards far-right activists or politicians, and then have a jeering attitude towards the given reasons for the seclusion. The study also includes a theoretical discussion, wherein the chosen Swedish far-right alternative media showed an overestimation of the power and influence of the mainstream media (as theoreticized by Nick Couldy, 2014). Likewise, the scrutinized data showed signs of relational anti-systemness (as theoreticized by Kristoffer Holt, 2018).

Godhetsapostlar, godhetsknarkare och godhetssignalering : En analys av begreppet godhet i svensk mediediskussion 2012–2020 / Social justice warriors and virtue signaling : An analysis of right-wing extremist rhetoric in Swedish public debate 2012-2020

Antfolk, Sofie January 2022 (has links)
This master thesis explores how the use of relatively new conceptual compositions such as "virtue signaling" and "social justice warriors" can alter and/or change the original connotations of "virtue" and "social justice". The study proposes that these compositions can become carriers of ideological structures. Further, it examines what effects these compositions have on the public debate. Using quantitative and qualitative digital text analysis on a selection of articles in Swedish alternative and mainstream media, the thesis finds the new compositions of the words "virtue" and "social justice" to be essentially contested concepts and that they have migrated from alternative media into the mainstream media. The thesis concludes that 1) the new compositions are carriers of the prevailing ideology in alternative media and that 2) the polemic and locked positions in the debate about virtue signaling calls for a discussion about language and its use.

Is There an Alternative? Muslim Representation in Alternative Media : A Comparative Discourse Analysis of Swedish Right-wing and Left-wingAlternative Media

Hauge, Cæcilie January 2023 (has links)
Over the last few years, there has been a rise in alternative media in Sweden as well as in otherEuropean countries. Although alternative media has proven to have more impact on attitudesthan traditional media, the field has been given limited attention. Left-wing media, in particular, has been given little thought by scholars and comparative discourse studies of alternative mediaacross the left-right spectrum has up till now not been achieved. . In this study, alternative mediais explored with a migration approach to understand how Muslims are discursively depicted inalternative right-wing and left-wing media. Through a media-political populism approach, thisstudy indicates that right-wing alternative media depict Muslims as ‘the elite’, whereasalternative left-wing media depict Muslims as ‘the people. Furthermore, the analysis finds thatalternative media make use of populist strategies to further their political stance. Finally, findingssuggests that further research expand on the definition of alterative media

Ndzi, Maylis 08 1900 (has links)
This Master’s thesis explores the contributions and strategies of resistance of Montreal black women, through the analysis of two podcasts: Black Girls from Laval and Woke or Whateva. Using a black cultural and feminist approach, I explore how these podcasts, as forms of alternative media, challenge dominant sociocultural discourses within society in response to what might be termed the “Black Lives Matter” era. Specifically, it addresses the ways in which young black women in Montreal, have used podcasting to authentically represent black women and communities in Montreal. Starting from an important historical and theoretical framework, the two podcasts studied are situated in a tradition of Black feminist resistance. In the episodes studied, hosts Naïla, Christle and Laurie (Black Girls from Laval), as well as Titi and Beck (Woke or Whateva), highlight the experiences of black people in the city. They demonstrate and deconstruct racist and sexist stereotypes of black women in mainstream media and encourage community involvement. This project, based on the podcasts studied, also highlights the importance of amplifying the points of view expressed by marginalized voices. They open up new avenues of reflection on various social issues, including the question of the prevalence of systemic racism in Quebec. By focusing on the experiences of black women in Montreal, this Master’s thesis contributes to the existing literature on black feminism in Canada. It shows how these women confront, experience and creatively challenge oppression in ways that are more concrete for people from marginalized communities.
