A programme to train adult mine workers in computer-based skills in the North-West Province : a case study

Segaole, Mpho Joy 09 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate a programme aimed at equipping adult mine workers in the North-West Province in computer-based skills. The study describes how the use of computers for learning has transformed some of the mine workers in an Own-Time learning environment, where computers were integrated in their learning activities, compared to the Full-Time adult learning environment, which did not present a similar opportunity. The perspective of using a combination of two teaching methodologies in the Adult Education and Training (AET) curriculum provided at this mine sought to minimise the conventional didactic instructional approaches, whereby the facilitator does most of the talking while learners become passive listeners. Activity theory (AT), in tandem with the reviewed literature, was well suited as a theoretical framework for this study, since it takes a developmental view of minds and technological interaction in context. The activity system was used to map how existing work-related practices fitted into each component, which includes the subject, object, rule, community and division of labour. A case study was applied as a guiding design in the study in which seventeen mine workers participated. The computer activity was illustrated from multiple perspectives, using a qualitative approach and associated epistemologies and beliefs regarding the engagement with mediational tools. Boundary crossings, the zone of proximal development, and the eight-step-model from activity theory were used to scrutinise the learners’ beliefs, attitudes, knowledge, practices and contradictions. These important aspects assisted in obtaining data through participant observation, interviews and field notes. To discover patterns, concepts, themes and meanings from the notes and transcripts, data analysis was blended with these aspects. This study demonstrated the use of the above-mentioned methods at appropriate times. Without ideal and effective research methods, the quality of evidence of this study would have suffered and elucidations of connections would have been inadequate. The findings revealed that the AET programme made an impact on the company and on the individual participants, in their homes, their place of work, and their communities. Change in the workers’ performance after attending AET computer-based programmes was noticeable especially regarding their literate and numerate knowledge and skills. Contradictions and disturbances in the AET programme were also identified, and an intervention was proposed to facilitate a computer programme that includes the curriculum components such as mouse skills, keyboarding, data manipulation and desktop publishing. The study proposes that the AET policy needs to cover Own-Time learners, even though their learning is not obligatory, in the same way as it covers the Full-Time learners. A modified activity theory, contextualised for a situation such as that in the mine in question, was contributed in the study. Furthermore, some limitations and recommendations for future research were identified from the findings. The proposed AT for adult learners suggests a new way of exploring the practices of mind and technology interaction for adult learners, incorporating cultural backgrounds, age, language, values and beliefs as well as reflective decision making. / Science and Technology Education / D. A study of the challenges of adult learning facilitation in a diverse setting with special reference to Soshanguve

Rivombo, Alfred Mashau 06 1900 (has links)
A critical cross-field outcome of Curriculum 2005 as introduced in South Africa is to work effectively with others as members of a team, group, organization, and community. This research aims at investigating challenges that impede adult learners from diverse backgrounds to work effectively as members of a team, group, organization and community. Informed by models of education in lifelong learning (intercultural, multicultural and anti-racist models of education which supplement andragogy), a qualitative inquiry which followed an active research approach was undertaken in selected adult learning centres in Soshanguve in Gauteng Province to explore the challenges of diversity during adult learning facilitation. Data was gathered from sixteen adult education facilitators from four adult education centres by means of in-depth interviews, follow-up interviews and observational fieldwork. Findings indicated that facilitators require additional knowledge and skills to achieve the objectives of the intercultural, multicultural and anti-racist models of education effectively; senior adult learners require particular attention from facilitators to prevent learner attrition in this age group; linguistic diversity problematises effective intercultural communication, especially where the facilitator is not proficient in learners‟ home languages; and awareness should be raised of the negative impact of inflexible attitudes towards certain aspects of diversity such as religion and sexual orientation on effective teaching and learning. However, positive adult education facilitation practices were also observed. Based on the findings of the literature review and the empirical inquiry recommendations for the improvement of practice were made. / ABET and Youth Development / M. Ed. Evaluation of curriculum design and delivery : a case for Zimbabwe Staff College

Kashora, Phoebe 01 1900 (has links)
The major goal of the Bachelor of Adult Education degree is to equip officers with the prerequisite skills, knowledge and attitudes to design and deliver programmed instruction to different categories of learners as well as to equip them with skills to conduct research in the field of adult education practice. The present study undertakes to investigate the reasons for lack of patronage for the adult education degree at Zimbabwe Staff College (ZSC) by exploring the quality of the adult education degree programme in terms of its effectiveness, relevance, value and its ability to enhance the quality of life. An adult education degree programme should reflect the sociocultural realities and experiences of adult learners. Participatory approaches should inform the development and implementation of curriculum. The aim of the study is to inform decisionmaking aimed at programme improvement. Effectiveness entails adequacy and appropriateness of teaching methods and support services. Relevance is ensured by considering the policy framework, curriculum provision, learners‟ needs and non–participation in the programme. Value constitutes the ability to improve the economic, professional, social and political aspects of life. Using the qualitative case study design, seven students and two administrators were selected using purposeful sampling, which is informed by the non-probability theory of sampling, to participate in individual and focus group interviews, which were subsequently conducted and generated data for analysis. Available relevant documents were analysed. The major finding revealed that a lack of recognition of the adult education programme by superiors at ZSC was the major obstacle to participation. Lack of recognition was found to be attributable to the absence of any national lifelong learning policy, ZSC policy framework, institutional structural conditions, and non–participatory curriculum development process and also to other associated barriers. The non-existence of the national and local policies on adult education was found to be negatively affecting not only participation but also the quality of the content provision because a lifelong learning policy framework is supposed to be informing design and practice. Recommendations focus on revision of the policy framework and the way the policies are implemented at national and local levels. A review of the implementation of policy is imperative if the restrictions responsible for the invisibility of adult education in the country and adult education programmes at ZCS are to be removed. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D. Sheikh, Farah Naz 15 December 2015 (has links)
The technology of information and communication has revolutionized the teaching in general and teaching of language in particular. This in its turn has altered the traditional concepts of roles attributed to the actors involved in the act of learning and teaching. This research work describes the distance learning especially online learning of French language in Pakistan using Internet and the problems related to this new approach of autonomous learning that requires the modification of roles and duties of both the learner and the teacher focusing on strategies to be used in order to make the learners get used to a method of learning that is totally different from traditional learning and to make them take responsibility of their learning.

Tessier, Alexandra 02 1900 (has links)
Communicating with family and friends, as well as with unfamiliar partners such as grocery store or pharmacy staff, is at the heart of many activities that enable satisfactory social participation. However, to achieve an inclusive society, human adaptations are essential for people living with a communication disability. Indeed, difficult interactions with individuals encountered in their community(ies) could restrict their social participation. In particular, their access to public transportation seems to be hindered by staff attitude and communication skills. Considering the key role of public transport in social participation, this thesis presents a research project that aims to improve interactions between adapted transport drivers and their passengers living with a communication disability. A communication partner training program, a speech-language pathology intervention aiming to train communication partner to better interact with people living with a communication disability, has been developed specifically for drivers of an adapted transport service in a large Quebec city. Its development was guided by a model from the field of adult education, the andragogical process model for learning. The training entitled Accessible Communication in Public Transportation was offered to thirteen adapted transport drivers. Its effects on the drivers were explored using an exploratory single-group design. The first study of the thesis is a scoping review. It describes the scientific literature on paid worker and unfamiliar partner communication training aiming to improve communication with people living with one or more acquired neurogenic communication disorders. The findings of this study are that the majority of communication partner training programs are disorder-specific and that they are mainly offered to health care staff or students. Despite variability in the measures used in the studies, the reported effects were promising for improving interactions between the people trained and individuals living with a communication disability. The second study of the thesis explores the usefulness of the andragogical process model for learning. The study points out that the model is useful for developing, delivering, and evaluating a workplace training that seemed to be appreciated by participants, even though the majority of the model's elements were adapted to meet organizational constraints. The study also points out that the assessment of learning needs, the establishment of an atmosphere of caring, acceptance, trust and respect conducive to learning, and the choice of training methods appear to be key elements of the model. The third study explores the effects of the communication partner training on thirteen adapted transport drivers. After being trained, the drivers appeared to have more knowledge about communicating with a person living with a communication disability. In addition, analysis of videos of the travel of passengers living with a communication disability by the driver-participants reveals that the drivers improved their relational communication and increased the number of gestures used with these passengers. This thesis suggests that a communication partner training based on adult education theories has the potential to improve interactions between adapted transport drivers and people living with communication disabilities. It lays the groundwork for further studies to evaluate the effectiveness and understand further the effects of similar trainings. This thesis reaffirms the importance of research on communication partner training as a promising intervention to realize a more inclusive society for people living with communication disabilities.

Ålder och samhällsperspektiv : en betraktelse över det livslånga lärandet i den akademiska miljön för 55-plussare / Age and society : a reflection upon Life long learning in the academic world concerning 55-plus-aged university graduates

Wertvreter, Eva-Maria January 2024 (has links)
