Pereira, Matheus Mazzilli January 2014 (has links)
This work analysis the construction of different forms of framing developed by animal rights activists in interactions with the mass media. Through a frame analysis, this social movement‟s organizations‟ profiles are analyzed, as well as specific cases of this kind of interaction in a comparative perspective. Scholars of the framing perspective identify a central dilemma that social movement‟s activists experience between a “strategic” position and an “ideological” attitude. In a critic of the concept of “strategy”, this work develops a classification of the frames based on the imagined adequacy of these interpretations to the situations to which they refer. Therefore, this dilemma is reinterpreted in terms of a dilemma between the use of categories seen as more or less adequate for the classification of the situations, knowing that there is a possibility that those categories seen as the most appropriate are not appealing or apprehensible to the interlocutor. The answers to this dilemma must vary according to three types of short-term general goals defined by the given “logics of action combinations”: construct social problems, conquer practical results and defend collective identities. In the case of the animal rights, these logics of action combinations are the origins of three types of activism: the constructionist abolitionism, the pragmatic abolitionism and the identity abolitionism. The activist‟s decision must vary, also, according to the peculiar interactive dynamics of each interaction in which they are inserted. Five interactive dynamics that are relevant to this process are identified: the attribution of characteristics to the interlocutor; the anticipation of the framing impact; the intentions of the actors; the adequacy to the speech situation; and the social role‟s performance. Thereby, pre-interactive dynamics and interactive dynamics both lead activists to develop distinct solutions for the framing dilemma in the analyzed cases.

The man and the meat : En kritisk diskursanalys av SVT-serien Köttets lustar. / The man and the meat : A critical discourse analysis of the SVT series Köttets lustar.

Musil, Ida Cecilia January 2018 (has links)
In december 2017 Sweden’s public service operation Sveriges television launched the series Köttets lustar. The series is about the Swedish comedian Henrik Schyffert when he explores the Swedish meat industry. During the series, two piglets named after the Swedish princesses Viktoria and Madeleine moves in to his flat in Stockholm, as a result of a bet he has with his son Limpan. Limpan, who loves animals and thinks that Schyffert eats too much meat wants Schyffert to get to know an animal from the meat industry, and decide whether he could kill an animal he has gotten to know or not. If he lets the pigs live in the end of the series, then he must eat vegetarian food for the rest of his life and if he decides to kill them, then he can continue to consume meat. During the series, and before Schyffert decides whether the pigs should live or die, he examines whether he should eat vegetarian food or meat, and what consequences vegetarian food has for his masculinity. The aim with this analysis was to examine the series Köttets lustar and how it depicts men’s relationship to meat consumption and the consequences it entails, seen from a animal rights perspective.  During this analysis I used the Norman Fairclough critical discourse analysis with its three dimensions: texts, discourse practice and the sociocultural practice. My analysis showed that meat consumption is an important part of the masculinity and in Schyfferts case he wasn’t ready to give up meat because of a fear that a life as a vegetarian could deprive him of his masculinity. The series also showed meats impact on the climate and the fact that animals in the meat industry also have feelings and are intelligent. The main conclusion of the analysis was that meat in relation to animal rights is very complex because meat’s importance for the masculinity. Because of the society where the man is norm and animals, like women, are defined as the other, the man’s need for meat has a bigger importance than whenever the animals is abused or not, which is something that shows in the series.

Animal suffering in factory farming and the best way to prevent it

Watkins, Gareth January 2005 (has links)
This thesis moves beyond the traditional approaches of how we ought to treat animals, and instead concentrates on the best strategy for preventing animal suffering in the farming industry. Chapter 1 considers the question of how we can know that animals feel pain, and concludes not only that it is rational to believe that they can, but also that this is a significant fact. Chapter 2 then analyses one possible strategy for helping to prevent animal suffering, namely demi-vegetarianism. For a number of reasons, however, this strategy is found to be flawed, therefore Chapter 3 analyses a second possible strategy, namely vegetarianism, and concludes that this is, in fact, the best strategy for helping to prevent animal suffering in the farming industry.

Towards the development of a "green" worldview, and criteria to assess the "green-ness" of a text : Namibia Vision 2030 as example

Harper, Sally Anne 22 December 2008 (has links)
This study assumes, rather than debates, that there is an increasingly global environmental crisis – global warming, loss of ozone layer, biodiversity loss, deforestation and desertification, natural resource depletion, toxic pollution - brought about by western nations’ abuse of the natural environment during nineteenth century industrialization, continuing through the twentieth century, and, many would argue, into the new millennium as well. Greens have been warning of the dangers of human-induced climate change since the 1960s. And yet, their analysis of the reasons for the wide and global range of ecological problems currently being experienced, of which climate change is only one, is not widely known. And even less so, are their solutions to the ecological crisis. This thesis, “Towards the development of a "green" worldview, and criteria to assess the "green-ness" of a text: Namibia Vision 2030 as example”, poses two research questions, and undertakes three tasks. The first question asks: “What does ‘seeing green’ as worldview mean?” “Green” emerges as not only pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours, but a fundamental challenge to western-cultural views on Self, and on the Self/Other relationship, including our human-nature relationship. It represents a total worldview, with its own legitimating narratives, epistemology, ontology, ethics, and viewpoints on real-world political issues as well. The green worldview differs sharply in its ultimate premises from mainstream sustainable development. On the green view, only the radical changes in Self, the Self/Other relationship, and society’s structures, which a green worldview demands, will be sufficient to avert the impending ecological crisis. A green worldview, while containing considerable diversity, is still sufficiently coherent and consistent that it can be reduced to a set of criteria and indicators for “seeing green”. This was the study’s second task. The study’s third task co-incides with its second research question: “How green is Namibia Vision 2030s worldview?” Namibia Vision 2030 is Namibia’s premier policy text designed to guide Namibia through a generation of sustainable development. Using the green criteria and indicators developed during the study, it is argued that particularly as far as this text’s ultimate premises on the human/nature relationship are concerned, its worldview is best described as pale green fading into grey. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Psychology / unrestricted

I Am Someone : Towards a Recognition of Nonhuman Personhood in Children’s Media and Education

Elvin, Emelie January 2021 (has links)
From our earliest days of childhood, our exposure to certain species is confusing and contradictory, with animals like the beloved characters who fill our storybooks moulded into unrecognisable shapes and served up to us in deceptively happy packaging. With a recognition of this cognitive dissonance as a starting point, this report seeks to highlight the inconsistency of teaching children to love and respect animals whilst at the same time to accept the eating and usage of them.  Whilst the topic of animal farming is finally beginning to be taken seriously in conversations about environmental sustainability, its ethical implications for both humans and nonhumans remain massively overlooked. My project aims to bring the conversation about animal rights to the forefront of our moral considerations with childhood education as an entry point.  In collaboration with a primary school class (ages 9-11) and an animal sanctuary, I ran a three-part workshop designed to encourage interspecies thinking and provide a space for students to critically evaluate mainstream attitudes and assumptions towards nonhuman animals and, by extension, to question current norms surrounding animal use and consumption.

Animal Rights in Corporate Social Responsibility : Going beyond Animal Welfare in Business Context

Tranova, Thanh Thanh, Matyášová, Máša January 2022 (has links)
This thesis explores the connection between animal rights (abolitionism) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in an animal-exploiting company. Looking at how companies should treat animals has long been neglected in academic research. For this reason, the thesis investigates how animal rights, in particular, relate to Carroll's pyramid of CSR. The research adopts qualitative research methods with semi-structured interviews. Carroll's pyramid of CSR and its four dimensions are used as the theoretical framework to both direct the data gathering and analyse the information that was acquired. The thesis concludes with several major findings. Firstly, it is found that animal-exploiting businesses do not address animal rights but animal welfare in their CSR strategy. Secondly, the findings identify relations between animal rights and the four levels of Carroll’s CSR framework, namely economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic levels. Finally, an adjusted version of the framework is developed correlating with abolitionism.

To Paint a Bleaker Picture : 'the Ungrievables' and the exploration into combining art and activism

Sporken, Jetty Silurian January 2022 (has links)
This research and artistic work is focused on the intersection of Art and Activism, and visually communicating the inherent suffering caused by human’s dominion over animals. In communicating suffering and dominion over animals, I aim to show and question the social norms that construct and support these discriminatory attitudes and practices towards non-human animals.  My overarching practice explores the features of illustration and activism and how they can be combined. I explore different mediums and styles, resulting in a variety of artistic expressions. These expressions are then combined with an activistic purpose.
