Baba Yaga: Character Design and Collectible Figurine

Adams, Ariel 01 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
The first edition of a series holds value. It is a bookmark that holds a place in time that the artist can look back to and see the progress that led up to that point, as well as the continued progress that's been made after. Designing and creating a set of characters, bringing the main character through 3D modeling, and printing it has multiple uses in the industry. The techniques learned through this process have been used in toy design, stop-motion animation, museums, and medical applications. 3D printing is advancing and providing an opportunity to create high-definition models that can be reproduced quickly while maintaining their initial integrity. This paper will go through the model's design concept and how to execute it. It is also a culmination of all the traditional skills acquired from a fine art background combined with all the new skills learned in the digital media field. This project aims to create a cohesive set of 2D character concepts centered around the story By Command of the Prince Daniel (Nikolaevich, 1915). The main antagonist, Baba Yaga, was then brought through the 3D modeling process so she could be resin printed and turned into a collectible figurine. Descriptive character traits from her stories were reimagined while providing a unique approach to the design that still preserves the story's essence.

Aleksandr Nikoláevitch Afanássiev e o conto popular russo / Aleksandr Nikoláevitch Afanássiev and the Russian folktale

Carolinski, Flavia Cristina Moino 27 May 2008 (has links)
The collection Russian folktales, brought out from 1855 to 1863 in eight volumes, was the result of the careful work by Aleksandr N. Afanássiev (1826-1871), responsible for the gathering and publishing of around 600 texts in this work. Afanássiev´s work was the first Russian folktales collection with a scientific approach, it became a fundamental study material, besides presenting the tales inherent poetry and humour. This dissertation has the objective to introduce Afanássiev´s path, who devoted himself not only to the tale but also to other folklorist expressions, as well as to outline the evolution of the folktale presence in the literary and scientific Russian life, making possible the appearance of many folklorist studies. Another purpose of this work is to present some recurring traits from the tales of magic. For this intention, Vladimir Propp´s works, who dedicated a lot of his time to the popular culture, and in particular, to the tales of magic, were extremely important to us. This dissertation also presents the translation into Portuguese of eleven tales of magic, in which the selection criteria was the presence of different representations of the folktale character Baba-Iagá, of which a short assessment is made of its traits, in accordance with Propp´s theories.

Erotik, trauman och rädslor : En folkloristisk intervjustudie om sägentraditionen bland bosnier i Sverige / Erotica, trauma and fears : A folkloristic interview study about the legend tradition among Bosnians in Sweden

Turcinovic, Ajdin January 2020 (has links)
Different cultures have legends which affect the people and societies in which these legends are traded. Most legends are ecotypified, but some legends can survive even when those who tell them move. The aim of this study is to identify some characteristic features of the legend tradition within the Bosnian diaspora in Sweden, and to identify which type of legends that live on in the Swedish environment. The study is conducted as an interview study and the results analyzed with a hermeneutic approach. The study identifies five different types of legends that are categorized into three different categories: erotic, trauma and fear. The results show a fear among the respondents that if the legends disappear, a loss of part of their Bosnian identity will follow. The conclusion show that the category of fear lives on in the Bosnian diaspora, whilst legends building on trauma and eroticism are at risk of disappearing in a Swedish environment.

Helicobacter pylori adhesion and patho-adaptation : the role of BabA and SabA adhesins in persistent infection and chronic inflammation

Mahdavi, Jafar January 2004 (has links)
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a human-specific gastric pathogen which is responsible for a spectrum of diseases ranging from superficial gastritis to gastric and duodenal ulceration, and which is also highly associated with gastric cancer. The pathogenesis of severe gastric disorders caused by H. pylori is multifactorial and involves complex interactions between the microbe and the gastric mucosa. H. pylori expresses several adhesion proteins. These molecules have important roles in the establishment of persistent infection and chronic inflammation, which cause tissue damage. The aim of this thesis was to study the attachment of this bacterium to human gastric epithelium, mediated by blood group antigens in both health and disease. One of the bestcharacterized H. pylori adhesins is the histo-blood group antigen binding adhesin (BabA), which binds specifically to the Lewis b antigen (Leb) in the gastric mucosa. A protective mucus layer lines the stomach. The mucosal glycosylation patterns (GPs) vary between different cell lineages, different locations along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and different developmental stages. In addition, GPs undergo changes during malignant transformation. MUC5AC is a mucin molecule produced by the surface epithelium. Three distinctly different types of human gastrointestinal tissue were studied by bacterial adherence analysis in situ. MUC5AC is the most important carrier of Leb and the new results demonstrate that it forms major receptors for H. pylori adherence. By analysing an H. pylori babA-deletion mutant, a novel adhesin-receptor binding mode was found. Surprisingly, the mutant bound efficiently to both human gastric mucosa and to gastric mucosa of Leb transgenic mice. The sialylated and fucosylated blood group antigen, sialyl-dimeric-Lewis x (sdiLex), was structurally identified as the new receptor. A positive correlation was found between adherence of H. pylori to sialyl-Lewis x (sLex) and elevated levels of inflammation response in the human gastric mucosa. These results were supported by detailed analysis of sialylated and fucosylated blood group antigen glycosylation patterns and, in addition, in situ bacterial adherence to gastric mucosa of experimentally challenged Rhesus monkey. The cognate sialic acid-binding adhesin (SabA) was purified by the retagging technique, and the corresponding sabA-gene was identified. H. pylori lipopolysaccharide (LPS) contains various Lewis blood group antigens such as Lewis x (Lex) and Lewis y (Ley). Additional bacterial adherence modes, which are independent of the BabA and/or SabA adhesins, could possibly be mediated by Lex interactions. Adherence of a clinical isolate and its corresponding Lex mutant to human gastric mucosa with various gastric pathologies was studied in situ. The results suggest that H. pylori LPS plays a distinct but minor role in promotion of bacterial adhesion. Taken together, the results suggest mechanisms for continuous selection of H. pylori strains, involving capacity to adapt to changes in the local environment such as shifts in cell differentiation and associated glycosylation patterns. Adherence of H. pylori is dependent on both the BabA and the SabA adhesin. Multi-step dependent attachment mechanisms may direct the microbes to distinct ecological niches during persistent infections, driving the chronic inflammation processes further toward the development of peptic ulcer disease and/or malignant transformation. Key words: H. pylori, BabA, adhesin, Lewis b, MUC5AC, sialyl-dimeric-Lewis x, chronic inflammation, SabA, Lewis x, LPS.

[en] MOTHER AND NANNY CARE SYSTEMS IN THE CONTEMPORARY FAMILY / [pt] SISTEMAS DE CUIDADOS DE MÃES E BABÁS NA FAMÍLIA CONTEMPORÂNEA

ISABELA CRISTINA MARTINS G SENA 22 June 2020 (has links)
[pt] As transformações socioculturais no Ocidente influenciaram profundamente a família contemporânea. / [en] Sociocultural transformations in the West have profoundly influenced the contemporary family. Changes in the role of women and their shift to the professional environment meant that care provided to young children was shared by other caregivers, such as nannies. The objective of the research was to identify childcare practices and beliefs carried by mothers and nannies form nuclear families, and thus compare these findings. The qualitative study interviewed 15 pairs of mothers and nannies, with children up to three years old. The families lived in the south of Rio de Janeiro. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, containing nine questions, in addition to the five images referring to Keller s parental systems (2005). Most mothers had higher education, while nannies, incomplete elementary school to complete high school. The results showed that mothers and nannies established similar orders for the figures of parental care systems. Another finding identified 12 common categories referring to the practice of child care performed by mothers and nannies. Most caregivers reported the transmission of personal beliefs to children from interaction and care practice. The paper concluded that caregivers beliefs and practices are fundamental to early child development.
