An Intuitive Approach to the Coriolis Effect

Silver, Kristian January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis has been to provide the reader with an intuitive insight into the mechanisms of the Coriolis effect. Apart from thoroughly describing the phenomenon, the essay attempts to eliminate as many myths prevailing around the Coriolis effect as possible. To get there, only a few mathematical derivations and calculations have been presented – the focus has been on a pure conceptual level. Furthermore, delusive textbook explanations have been examined and discussed in case studies. In the conclusion, the goal is reached by summarising the sought intuitive description of the Coriolis effect into one single sentence.

Peace and Mind: Religion, Race, and Gender among Progressive Intellectuals and Activists

Humphries, David 06 August 2007 (has links)
This paper explores how changing conceptions of religion, race, and gender at the beginning of the twentieth century promoted transnational anti-systemic movements and increased cooperation between progressive intellectuals and political activists. Using the cases of Bertrand Russell, George Bernard Shaw, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Jane Addams, and Sylvia Pankhurst, this paper chronicles and analyzes protest to the First World War and objection to the organization of the world-system.

Demers, Jean-Christophe 14 January 2019 (has links)
Abstract This sociological investigation commences with a concise history of the family—and its relation to religion—through the lens of a nascent intimacy, an intimacy that will progressively stem from partial dislocations of family and religion. Building on this work, the study then proceeds to a sociohistorical interpretation of three interconnected social discourses: sexuality, the couple, and love during the 20th century. At the crossroad of this trinity emerges a social imaginary of intimacy that still organizes our social representations and our discourses to this day. The cornerstone of this thesis rests in a discourse analysis—influenced by M. Foucault’s archeological method—of one of the most influential and preeminent public figures of the 20th century in Québec, Janette Bertrand. Based on this discourse analysis, we propose an interpretation of the ways in which modern intimacy appears—between 1940 and the 1990s—, and diffuses within society, continuously changing under the effect of various social forces. Simultaneously, we assess the emergence of a culturally and historically specific form of subjectivity, conditioned by the subjectivation of women and the development of a broader ideological context. Ultimately, this thesis is an invitation to an aggiornamento of our common sociological and historical understanding of modern individualism. Perhaps this understanding requires the input of a medium-range theory, taking into account the national and cultural conditions necessary to the emergence of such board categories as “modernity” and “individualism”. In the end, this thesis sketches the evolution of a social imaginary of intimacy in Quebec, from its early budding until its edification as a genuine épistémè, fully able to offer meaning and guidance for relations and relationships between individuals and most of all, between men and women.

Probabilidade e probabilidade geomÃtrica: alÃm dos dados, moedas e cartas de baralho / Probability and geometric probability: in addition to data, coins and playing cards

Josà Luciano Nascimento Bezerra 21 September 2015 (has links)
This work is a didactic-pedagogical approach to the study and teaching of Probability Theory in Basic Education, with emphasis on the concept of Geometric Probability, its importance and relevance to a more meaningful, effective and attractive learning. It begins with the history and evolution of this unique branch of Applied Mathematics, followed by a section with theory and practice by means of problem solving. The concept of geometric probability is introduced and developed in order to show how broad the theory of probability can be (as presented in textbooks in Brazil), both in terms of content, as well as applications and relations with other areas of mathematics itself. Some interesting and well-know applications in the literature are presented, analyzed and solved in a simple fashion, sometimes by making use of less elementary mathematics, others times by exploring only intuitive aspects. In this section, focused on the application of the concept of geometric probability, we deal with the solving of problems, such as the Problem of Buffonâs Needles, the Pasta Problem and the Problem of the Encounter, among others, closing with the problem of Bertrandâs Paradox. On the sequence the author offers his final remarks and appendix with some demonstrations of results in plane geometry that are used throughout the text.

Faith, hope, and the poor : the theological ideas and moral vision of Jean-Bertrand Aristide

Joseph, Celucien 16 February 2017 (has links)
The objective of this research is to examine the theological ideas and moral vision of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and to explore how his theology (and theological hermeneutics and ethics) has influenced his politics of solidarity and social activism on behalf of the oppressed and the poor in Haiti in particular, and the wretched of the earth, in general. Through the use of the postcolonial, decolonial, and Liberation Theology paradigms as hermeneutical and theoretical methods of investigation, the project seeks to answer a threefold question: what is the relationship between theology and social activism and transformation in the thought and writings of Jean-Bertrand Aristide? What is the place and function of the community of faith, the poor, the oppressed, hope, and human liberation in the political theology of Jean-Bertrand Aristide? What is the place of (defensive) violence in Aristide’s theology? Our goal in this scholarly investigation is an attempt to provide an answer to these daunting questions above and to explore more fully and intelligently the theology of Jean-Bertrand Aristide. This present study considers Aristide’s democratic and social justice projects and theological reflections and theological intersections in the disciplines of theological anthropology, theological ethics, and political theology, as he himself engages all four simultaneously. The doctoral thesis locates Aristide’s thought and writings within Black intellectual tradition both in continental Africa and the African Diaspora. It establishes shared intellectual ideas and parallelisms, and strong ideological connections between Aristide and Black theologians and thinkers in both continental Africa and the African Diaspora. On one hand, Aristide’s intellectual ideas and political activism should be understood in the context of the struggle for democracy in Haiti; on the other hand, it is suggested the intellectual articulations and propositions of these Black and African thinkers aim at a common vision: the project to make our world new toward the common good. While we do not undermine the problem of violence in Aristide’s theology and political program in the context of Haitian history, the doctoral thesis argues that Aristide’s theological anthropology is a theology of reciprocity and mutuality, and correspondingly, his theological ethics is grounded in the theory of radical interactionality, interconnectedness, and interdependence, and the South African humanism of Ubuntu. It also contends that Aristide’s promotion of a theology of popular violence and aggression in the Haitian society should be understood as a cathartic mechanism and defensive violence aimed at defending the Haitian masses against the Duvalier regime and their oppressors. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Dogmatics and Christian Ethics / PhD / Unrestricted

Clermont, Patricia 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis proposes an approach of the mémoriel which questions the production of memory in its processual character. It has three main features. First, it focuses on a plurality of times involved in the production of memory (but also the establishment of local communities and the production of their continuities). It also places the processes of representation at the heart of its questionings - in particular, it emphasizes the ways in which memory is constituted by representation (instead of examining the ways in which memory is represented). Finally, it questions the ways in which the production of memory contributes to circumscribe, to maintain and to make communities, and what forms of collectivization are realized in this respect. The first chapter outlines this approach to memory in contrast with a presentation of three major families of approaches - approaches to collective memory, approaches of cultural memory and presentist approaches – which apprehend memory as a construct. It also explains how I put the mémoriel to good use in a surface analysis which captures the constitution of representations by which the former hockey player Maurice Richard and the former host and television writer Janette Bertrand are established as public figures, through technologies and figures of public individuality which bring them into being in singular ways. In this perspective, I present, in the second chapter, an analysis of the constitution of Maurice Richard as a hero, and in the third, an analysis of the constitution of Janette Bertrand as a pioneer. In the fourth and final chapter, I notice in particular the effectiveness of the respective technologies and processes of representation by which these public personalities are established. I also bring to light that these technologies and the elements which they produce, run through and put into relation are constantly apprehensible in the singularity of their meetings. I then conclude by outlining the manner in which my approach of the mémoriel contributes to memory studies, a field which is the object of an increasing disciplinarization.

On an epic theme, on a lyric theme : celebrate the good constable

Demelas, Delphine 24 June 2016 (has links)
The manuscript Aix-en-Provence, municipal library, 428(306) contains two different texts. The first, La Chanson de Bertrand du Guesclin, is a rimed epic poem telling the life of Bertrand du Guesclin (1320-1380), a Britain knight from a modest background who took part of the One Hundred Years War, and would become the constable of France. This biography has been written by a certain Cuvelier between 1380 and 1385, right after Bertrand's death. The second is a set of seven lyric poems written in memory of Bertrand, three of which were written by Eustache Deschamps. The first text, at the same time historical, epic, a tribute, biographie and poem, has a considerable importance in the literary production of the day as the last chanson de geste to be written in French. The poems celebrating the constable are fully in line with the lyric revival of the end of the 14th century. Through our study, we like to discover or rediscover this underrated work ; we will provide original text of the manuscript, descriptions of the other manuscripts, a literary review including a study of the context and new information about the author, a linguistic study, critical notes, a glossary, an index, a list of proverbs, and a comprehensive bibliography.
