Previous issue date: 2013-06-05 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Understand how to process the relations in everyday life of prison and evaluate
the situation of health care in the detainee CDP São Vicente/SP was the main
objective of this study aimed to ascertain the specific living conditions of
detainees in the town of São Vicente/SP; see how they detect diseases before
and during incarceration in the town of São Vicente/SP; know the actions taken
by health professionals and ways to treat diseases of the detainees; identify
which inmates' complaints of CDP São Vicente/SP in relation to health care of
the detainee. This is qualitative research conducted in Provisional Detention
Center Dr. Luis Cesar Lacerda de São Vicente, São Paulo, and ten prisoners as
subjects and a health care professional who works in the prison unit. With
detainees, the instrument used was a semi-structured interview and the
professional, open interview with script. Data collection occurred during the
months from July to December 2011. The results revealed that the profile of
inmates does not differ from that found in other studies. Of the ten inmates, four
are in the range of 20 to 30 and the remaining six between 31 and 40 years.
The low education level was confirmed, as two did not complete primary school
and eight complete elementary school. Regarding marital status, three singles
and seven are married. Regarding the number of children, three prisoners have
no son, four even has two sons, two of three to four children and only one
inmate have five or more children. The color self-declared also confirmed, with
browns and blacks add nine prisoners and one white. Seven inmates are from
Baixada Santista and three from other cities in the state of São Paulo. Seven
primary and three are repeat offenders, and still, eight and two regularly receive
visits any visit. A professional is female, 50 years old and worked for nine years
and six months in SAP, throughout this period in the town of São Vicente. The
analysis of data was based on two main themes: life in prison and the inmate
health care. The everyday prison is marked by idleness, power relationships
and coping strategies. In health care the inmate was found that prisoners are
assisted minimally, because there is a shortage of health professionals, such as
doctors and nurses, and the distribution of drugs is only regulate when it comes
to TB, HIV and mental illness. In other cases, there is delay in treatment and
medication from the prison unit and are usually family members who bring
drugs. With regard to food, this is general dissatisfaction, although it is an
important component to maintaining health. The research sought to show a clip
from the reality experienced by prisoners regarding health care in the town of

Inside the line of the search on Family and Society, this dissertation is about the complex bond between women and prison. The intention is to investigate public policies for Human Rights and, by extension, for the fundamental and social rights to promote better living conditions and living-together conditions for the prisoners and their children. The increase of the female population in prison up discussions on gender issues, vulnerabilities and ethics. One can notice the androcentric structure of prisons created for and thought by men. The confinement of those idealized by society as being docile and meek causes a dilemma, since their idealized role of taking care of the household chores rests unfulfilled. Most of them lose touch with family members and friends because of geographical distance and prejudice. Another major challenge for the Brazilian prison system is the increasing number of pregnant women in prison. Prisons are not prepared for the pregnancy and the staying of the baby while breast-feeding. The lack of protection by the State brings up the paradox of the principle of universality, guaranteed to "everyone", when in fact only those who own capital and actively participate in the global market are assisted. To find out what the impacts of institutional gender violence caused in imprisoned women, there was a case study in Conjunto Penal Feminino, located in Salvador, Bahia. The methodological approach used was the qualitative one, which provided a better understanding of the facts and social processes detected through semi structured interviews with twelve female inmates. There was a review of classic and contemporary references such as: Aristotle, Badinter, Beccaria, Bobbio, Chodorow, Harvey, Kurz, Perrot, Plato, Reale and others. The material collected in the field, which use had been previously authorized by the prison institution and consented to by the group of participants, was confronted with the current legislation and the critical theory. Partial results show that: as the moment of separation will certainly occur because of the imprisonment, the State becomes fully responsible for the children, in addition to keeping affection and sustaining family ties. It requires recognition of the reproductive rights, of the right to maternity and the (re)construction of family ties in order to (re)integrate them into society.

This dissertation analyzes two narratives of prison experience, published in 2001: Diário de um detento: o livro of Jocenir and Memórias de um sobrevivente, Luiz Alberto Mendes. The analysis of these two works is based
on how this subject incarcerated searches the legitimacy of his speech, since this is delegitimized both the experience itself, that is, the content of the story, as reported by the speech that, due to the fact that the author does not belong to legitimate means of literate culture. Thus, this prisoner appropriates resources of literacy to not only tell your story, but with a hard-hitting reporting portray the reality of the prison, taking the position of an observer from prison.

presas, mediante visitas in loco à UPF.
This Technical Report aims to analyze the conditions of imprisonment of women in
the Prision Unit Women (UPF) in Palmas, portraying the female profile and the
criminal types that led to the arrest. This is an empirical research whose systematic
data collection was performed directly on the physical records of the 62 prey, through
on-site visits to UPF. As a theoretical and methodological support for the analysis of
the data was used the approach of the Theory of Labeling from Critical Criminology.
The results of the research show traces of the criminalization of poverty and labeling
by social class, skin color, schooling, etc. Unlike Critical Criminology, positivist
criminal micro-sociology works with the paradigm of social reaction, which labels the
criminal by the characteristics of the environment in which he is inserted and by the
criminal type, producing the phenomenon of overincarceration, disregarding the
macro-social factors that produce the phenomenon of criminality and allow an
understanding of crime beyond causality. At UPF, the conditions of incarceration
violate Human Rights, considering the overcrowding and UPF structure, which is a
residence adapted to the purposes of it.

Previous issue date: 2014-09-12 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis tried to reflect on the processes of dehumanization and violation of
the human rights of men and women in prision and identify the possibilities of
expression about the generic-human inside the institution.
In approach of this theme it talked about the creative work as the founding of
the sociability, consciousness and the universality as well as the freedom being a
concrete men s choice. Other issues were addressed to the routine not only in the
extent of privileged place for the reproduction of alienation but also from its
overcoming through art and political ethical praxis.
It looked for placing the transformations of the work in capitalism from the 20th
century, the working class criminalization and presenting a brief historic about the
imprisonment in the state of São Paulo, after the 70th in perspective of
contextualizing. The research focused on the analysis of letters sent by the
imprisoned men and women to Prison Ministry which from them it was understood
the profile and the conditions of the imprisonment, as well as the thematic workshops
held at the Santa Ana Feminine Penitentiary to improve the knowledge about the
violations of the women s rights and their ways of coping it.
In summary, the analysis of the different ways of violation from the specialized
bibliography, institutional documents, reading and review of letters and workshops
had the main purpose to add to the reflection of incarceration in a daily full of
infringements, in which the systems of dehumanization are intensified, being
dominant but not absolute / Esta tese procurou refletir sobre os processos de desumanização e violação

Previous issue date: 2006-07-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This ethnographic study describes and aims at interpreting the processes of recovering freedom by men who have lived the experience of criminal imprisonment in Brazil. It starts from the premise that imprisonment sets off values, traumas, behaviors and attitudes that are present when these subjects resume their lives after being released from prison. Freedom is not limited only to the opening of gates so that the subjects can leave the objective reality of having experienced imprisonment. The conception that persists about the ex-prisoners is that they are dangerous and devilish men, who are capable of catalyzing fear, insecurity and mistrust. They are considered the reverse side of civility, since they are dangerous, superfluous and susceptible of being exterminated. This image is also strengthened by the imprisonment heritage of being confined, by the vigilance and control perceived in the codes of ethics and conducts and the feeling of being strange that they feel when leaving the prison. To find out whether or not and to which extent imprisonment has been fixed on these subjects demanded a process of work, whose basic premise was a long life experience with this other. The basis was the narratives of fifty-two men, former prisoners who were interviewed and followed up for three years. The interpretation of these narratives enabled the acknowledgment not only of their creative and active potentials, but also the identification of several factors that resulted in the immobilization of their actions, plans and projects. Our starting point was to find out when the ex-prisoner ceases being considered an ex-prisoner? By giving voice to these subjects, we could understand the consequences of imprisonment in the attempts of being adapted to the outside world and/or of rebuilding their lives after prison. Based on their expressions, the prison itself was evaluated as a system and as such, the disciplinary techniques that were used were also evaluated. Michel Foucault and Irving Goffman s theoretical references were used to analyze the aspects of the imprisonment regime present in the ones that were subject to imprisonment and to analyze the consequences of this past of prison in the reconstruction of the identity of these subjects when they leave it. This past that is present in their lives was analyzed, and from it was confirmed that despite the drastic consequences of confinement, the subjects can react to them, with the aim of overcoming them to reach the emancipation status of a former prisoner, by thinking and acting free from imprisonment. The narratives were classified according to criteria of individual and group memory, analyzing their resignifications based on Michael Pollak. Conceptual schedules that were organized into chapters in this work stemmed from the analysis of the narratives: the singularities perceived in the research field that characterize the subjects, the exit from the prison and their introduction into the family and social milieu; their behaviors after prison, the re-signification of the delict and of the prison and finally the attempts of emancipation through work. From these schedules, it was possible to discuss issues referring to emancipation and identity, which were impacted by confinement, in terms of making their actions capable of overcoming the ex-prisoner status / Este estudo etnográfico descreve e busca interpretar os processos de retomada da liberdade por homens que viveram a experiência do encarceramento penal no Brasil.

Previous issue date: 2013-06-19 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This master's thesis represents the search for a narrative. We aim to demonstrate that there is a story behind a set of apparently unrelated stories and that what bundles these stories is not only the symbolic description or records of an important period of the history of Brazil, but also, despite its incipient literary load, the path a man must necessarily follow in order to accomplish his journey under the absurdity of the world. When we think about writing and surviving in Cartas da prisão [Letters from prison], by Frei Betto, we try to identify, in this tug-‐of-‐war, in what measure would there be a movement of dynamic balance of the origin of the author in the denial of death. For the high degree of subjectivity we aim for here, Roland Barthes' concept of Neutral has proved to be an efficient methodology, having provided us with the attribute of the impasse and, therefore, the right to news paths, the access to surprising answers and, above all, a sparkling creative-‐critical-‐aesthetic experience, to use an expression of Barthes himself. The lucidity that ties Sisyphus to his destiny under the huge rock of his condemnation or Camus to his human rebellion in face of the race condemnation is of the same order of the one that connects Betto to literature and which represents his only real possibility of achieving true freedom: through consciousness / A

Previous issue date: 2011-08-25 / The penitentiary problematic represents one of the greatest challenges to
be faced by social policies and jails. Prison labor, establishing itself as a point of
convergence between several different purposes conferred, contemporaneously, the
capital punishment, meets, among other meanings, those who drive for
understanding as a "transformative" intervention protagonist instrument in the life of
inmates. Despite the possible ambiguities that entails meaning of prison labor in their
configurations, we perceive it in our study as a motivating factor for the reflections
and their exploitation in combating the social vulnerability of prisoners and individuals
targeted by criminal selectivity. In this sense, we seek from this thesis unveilings
subsidies from individuals belonging to two opposite geographically regional realities
able to provide a critical analysis of the impacts that the work in prison strikes with
the perspectives of life of inmates in their paths of returning to social life. The
locations of data collection - Institute of Penitentiary Administration of Amapá/AP and
Canguçu State Prison/RS - were chosen with the purpose of establishing tensioners
contrasts of influences that the social, economic and cultural characteristics of each
region register in the operation of the prison job by their administrators, as well as
their responsiveness on the part of inmates of the prison system. For the pursuit of
these objectives, sociological contributions of Michel Foucault, David Garland and
Gustavo Busso were fundamental on the transmutations regarding the mechanism of
power relations between social control and criminal selectivity, and notions
sujeitos pertencentes a duas realidades regionais geograficamente opostas
egressos do sistema carcerário.

Previous issue date: 2007-03-30 / This dissertation analyses the activities carried out by the Pastoral Carcerária
(Prison Pastoral) at Pires do Rio since its foundation in 27th February 1997, giving
particular emphasis to the outcomes of the reflections and actions undertaken by
the Pastoral. This analysis demonstrates that violence is placed in all communities
and societies and that, often, it is even legitimated by and deep-rooted in the
religious phenomenon. Currently, the determinant causes of criminality are inbuilt
in structural and social problems, but despite that there remain ideological
subterfuges exempting the State, the system and the society itself. Looking at the
results or the mentioned anomies that burden the convicts and the ex-convicts, it
is possible to perceive that the genesis of this problematic is predominantly social.
Inside this context, the religious phenomenon can become either an element of
rescue and transformation of the convict him/herself, or a mere aid work aiming at
corroborating the social order and current structures. The performance of Pires do
Rio s Prison Pastoral became an inquiring element in this dominant paradigm
encouraging a new attitude of society towards convicts and evicts.Through its
work, the Prison Pastoral questions the prison system which is bankrupted; points
out to solutions and agglutinate transforming actions. In this perspective, the
prisoners supported by the Pastoral feel themselves agents of transformation of
this reality retrieving their self-esteem, their citizenship, being and feeling no
longer the segregated, the leftover of society. And that allows them to socially
interact, turning them into protagonists of their own history.
vezes, legitimada e arraigada no próprio fenômeno religioso.
e a própria sociedade.
transformação desta realidade, resgatando sua auto-estima, o seu ser cidadão;
