Depressão materna e comportamento de crianças: estressores, práticas parentais positivas e suporte social / Maternal depression and child behaviour: stressors, positive parenting practices and social support

Ana Paula Casagrande Silva 09 April 2015 (has links)
Maternal depression is well-documented as a risk factor in the development of child behaviour. There is, however, a gap in the literature concerning multiple simultaneous influences of behavioural problems in children of depressed mothers. This study helps fill this gap by identifying multiple risk and protective factors with regards to behavioural problems in children of depressed mothers, relative to children of mentally healthy mothers. The study focused on stressors, positive parental practices, social support and possible correlations between these variables. One-hundred mother-child dyads took part in the study, divided in two groups: G1 50 child-mother dyads in which the mothers had a history of recurrent depression; and G2 50 child-mother dyads in which the mothers did not suffer from psychiatric disorders. Mothers, and by extension their children, were recruited from healthcare centres in the city of Ribeirao Preto SP. Children were aged between 6 and 12 years old. Mothers and children took part in individual face-to-face interviews. Mothers completed the following measures: (a) DSM-IV Structured Clinical Interview; (b) General Questionnaire; (c) Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire; (d) Family Environment Resources Inventory; (e) Adverse Events Scale; (f) Chronic Adversity Scale; (g) Semi-structured interview to assess stress factors, positive parental practices, and social support. Children, in turn, completed the Ravens Colourful Progressive Matrices Scale and the School Performance Test. Scales were coded according to technical norms and interviews were transcribed and analysed in accord with previously defined codes. Data analysis was conducted using Fishers Exact Test, Students t- test, Bivariate Logistic Regression, and Pearson Correlation. Results revealed that, as compared to G2, G1 showed a higher frequency of childrens behavioural problems (x G1 = 15.12 and x G2 = 9.08), more adverse events (x G1 = 14.08 e x G2 = 8.38), greater frequency of chronic adversities (x G1 = 3.92 and x G2 = 2.22), more stress factors in general (x G1 = 29.63 and x G2 = 17.91), less resources in the family environment (x G1 = 57.76 and x G2 = 62.12), less positive parental practices concerning social sensitivity (x G1 = 70.00 and x G2 = 90.00), and generally less social support (x G1 = 33.19 and x G2 = 37.14). The frequency of behavioural problems in G1 was positively correlated with stressors concerning the children. Notably, both greater social support in general and support provided by the social network were correlated with fewer problem behaviours for the same group. Similarly, stressors were positively correlated with behavioural problems in G2. Finally, greater frequency of positive parental practices, in particular those reflecting sensitivity to others, were related to fewer behavioural problems in G2. These results point to the presence of multiple adversities in a family environment of maternal depression, which characterizes a context of cumulative risk. However, social support emerged as a protective factor for these families. These results can inform the design of intervention and prevention strategies in the context of maternal and infant mental health.

Depressão materna e o perfil de socialização de meninos e meninas em idade escolar / Maternal depression and the socialization profile of school-age boys and girls.

Lívia Loosli 19 October 2011 (has links)
Maternal depression has been considered a condition of adversity on child development, observing regarding gender peculiarities and diversity of findings in relation to behavior, psychopathology and the socialization profile of children living with maternal depression. This study aimed to: a) characterize the socialization profile of school-age children living with recurrent maternal depression, identifying resources and difficulties related to academic performance and behavior; b) compare groups separated by gender; c) correlate school performance and behavior. Were evaluated 40 mother-child dyads, with mothers diagnosis systematically assessed of recurrent depressive disorder, and children aged between seven and 12 years, were divided into two groups differentiated by gender: G1- 20 boys and G2-20 girls. Children were identified by the selection of mothers in treatment at public mental health services in Ribeirão Preto - SP. For the selection of participants were used: Structured and Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) for diagnostic confirmation of mothers, and the Matrizes Progressivas Coloridas de Raven - Escala Especial test, for cognitive assessment of children and exclusion of intellectual deficit. Proceeded with the evaluation of child behavior through Strenghts and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) completed by the mothers, and school performance through the Teste de Desempenho Escolar (TDE) performed by children. The instruments were applied according to technical recommendations and evaluations were conducted in individual sessions. Data were coded according to the propositions of the instruments. For the analysis proceeded to compare the groups differentiated by gender for school performance and behavior and, depending on the distribution of variables, were used the tests Mann Whitney, Chi-square, Exact Chi-square, Fisher Exact, Bivariate Logistic Regression Analysis and Spearman Correlation, adopting a significance level p0.05 for all comparisons. In relation to school performance, there were no significant differences between the profile of boys and girls. Approximately half of all children had difficulties, especially those related to arithmetic skills, and presented resource indicators in writing and reading areas. With regard to behavior, 42.5% of children had behavioral difficulties, observing a statistically significant difference between genders in relation to emotional symptoms, with 80% of girls presenting indicators of losses on this scale compared to 50% boys. For the group of girls were identified negative correlations between school performance and behavior. Concludes that children exposed to recurrent maternal depression have difficulties on school performance and behavioral regardless of gender, and girls were more vulnerable than boys in relation to emotional problems related to somatic complains and insecurity, prevailing in internalizing behaviors, not differing from boys with regard to externalizing behaviors, which had more resources to deal with such adversity. It is considered that such data can contribute to the planning of different therapeutic interventions for school age boys and girls living with maternal depression, with special attention to girls.

Depressão materna, recursos, adversidades do ambiente familiar e o comportamento de escolares, avaliado por mães e professoras / Maternal depression, resources and adversity in the family environment, and schoolchildrens behavior assessed by mothers and teachers.

Martineli, Ana Karina Braguim 02 June 2017 (has links)
Maternal depression is known to be an adversity that affects the family environment and is associated with behavioral problems among schoolchildren. There is a need for studies addressing risk and protective conditions of the family environment assessing children through multiple informants. The objectives were (a) to compare and correlate resources and stressors in the family environment of children who live with maternal depression and present behavioral problems with the resources and the stressors of children whose mothers do not present depression and who do not present behavioral problems; and (b) to compare and correlate the behaviors of children from the perspective of their mothers and teachers. A cross-sectional design was used to assess a convenience sample composed of 85 mother-child pairs distributed between: G1 = 26 mothers with indicators of depression and children with behavioral problems; G2 = 29 mothers without indicators of depression and children with behavioral problems; and G3 = 30 mothers without indicators of depression and children without behavioral problems. Children aged from seven to 10 years old, of both sexes, were included. Assessment was initiated with the mothers, followed by the children and teachers. The following instruments were applied face-to-face to the mothers in a single session: General Questionnaire, Patient Health Questionnaire, Family Environment Resource Inventory, Adverse Events Scale, Chronic Adversity Scale, and The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The childrens intellectual level was assessed using Ravens Progressive Matrices Special Scale. The teachers responded to the SDQ teachers, preceded by information on the childrens school performance. Data were coded according to technical propositions and statistically analyzed adopting a significance level of 5% (p0.05). Comparisons among groups showed the following significant differences: the families facing maternal depression presented more indicators of chronic adversities; and the children with behavioral problems presented fewer resources and more chronic adversities. The mothers identified more behavioral problems in children than teachers. The mothers (r = 0.490) and teachers (r = 0.294) assessments showed associations between maternal depression and childrens behavioral problems and between behavioral problems and poor school performance. We verified that: (a) children living with maternal depression presented multiple risk indicators in their family environment, which may have favored behavioral problems, which were also associated with having fewer resources; and (b) mothers and teachers diverged in regard to their assessments concerning the childrens behavioral problems, showing that different parameters were used in the family and school contexts. These data may support the development of preventive programs in the school context and also interventions for the family context, which may benefit childrens behaviors.

"Perfil comportamental e competência social de crianças e adolescentes filhos de mulheres com esquizofrenia" / Behavior profile and social competence of children and adolescentes of schizophrenic mothers

Gutt, Elisa Kijner 14 December 2005 (has links)
The objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior profile and social competence of children and adolescents of schizophrenic mothers, and compare it with children of the same age and gender of mothers without any severe mental disorder. To evaluate children and adolescents the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Youth Self Report (YSR) were used. The children of schizophrenic mothers had a higher proportion of internalizing problems and of thought problems, mostly for children living with their schizophrenic mothers, when compared to children and adolescents of mothers without any psychiatric disorder

The Role of Temperamental Fear and Parenting Quality on Emerging Internalizing and Externalizing Problems During Early Childhood

Patel, Tejal 23 May 2019 (has links)
Temperamental characteristics may distinguish which children are at greater risk for later psychopathology. In addition, parenting quality may interact with the association between temperament and behavior problems to increase or decrease externalizing or internalizing behaviors in children. This study examined whether mothers’ parenting quality moderated the associations between children’s temperamental fear and children’s behavior problems. The sample consisted of 143 low-income mother-child dyads who participated in various interactional tasks designed to measure mothers’ parenting and children’s temperamental fear. While children’s fearless and fearful temperament were not significantly associated with externalizing and internalizing behaviors, respectively, some significant associations emerged. Positive and negative parenting were negatively associated, negative parenting and fearful temperament were positively associated, fearful and fearless temperament were negatively associated, and internalizing and externalizing behaviors were positively associated. Finally, results from moderation analyses indicated no significant interaction effects of parenting quality and children’s temperamental fear on children’s problem behavior.

An evaluation of systematic training in effective parenting : a pilot study

Norington, Margaret A., n/a January 1983 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to assess the immediate and delayed effectiveness of Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP), an Adlerian-based parent study group programme. STEP is a nine-session, multi-media package which combines communication skills with basic Adlerian principles. The focus of the study was the parents. The dependent variables were: parents' perceptions of their Target Children's behaviour; parents' knowledge of an Adlerian approach to child-rearing; and parental perceptions of their own behaviour and feelings. Measurement of the dependent variables was by the use of the following instruments: the Adlerian Parent Assessment of Child Behavior Scale (APACBS), a 32-item interval scale developed to assess parents' perceptions of typical child behaviours dealt with in the STEP programme; the STEP Questionnaire, a cognitively-based questionnaire based on the content component of the STEP programme; and individual interviews held with the mothers in the Experimental (STEP) Group. The Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design was used in the study. Both the parents in the STEP and Control Groups were either clients or potential clients of an Educational Clinic, or had been referred by a School Counsellor. The STEP programme was run with strict adherence to materials and format by the researcher. Measurements were taken immediately following the completion of the programme and again 14 weeks later. Results indicated significant positive short- and longterm changes in parental perceptions of their children's behaviour as measured by APACBS after involvement in a STEP programme. Short- and long-term changes also occurred in the parents' knowledge of an Adlerian approach to childrearing as measured by the STEP Questionnaire. The STEP Group mothers reported changes in their behaviour and feelings following participation in a STEP programme. Some recommendations for further research are: replication of the study with various populations; studies measuring actual observed behaviour of the child, and the parent; effects of STEP as a minor strand or part of an ongoing parent education programme; the effects of varying levels of skills of leaders; and the incorporation of video cassette recordings of the audio tapes in the STEP kit.

A Longitudinal Investigation of the Bidirectional Relations Between Parental Sources of Knowledge and Child Disruptive Behavior

Wimsatt, Amber Rochelle 01 December 2010 (has links)
Research indicates that parental sources of knowledge (i.e., child disclosure, parental solicitation, and parental control) play a role in the occurrence of antisocial and other problem behaviors in childhood and adolescence. Because sources of knowledge have not been examined regarding the extent to which they are specifically related to change in disruptive behavior disorder (DBD) symptoms and no research has examined the influence of child symptom clusters of DBD on parental sources of knowledge, the current study longitudinally examined reciprocal relations between child disclosure, parental solicitation, and the DBD symptom clusters of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Conduct Disorder (CD), and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Participants were 89 children (56% males) recruited from a mid-sized southeastern community with ages ranging from 9-12 years (M = 10.4 years, SD = 1.1 years) at baseline. Results indicated that disclosure was negatively associated with both ODD and CD symptoms and solicitation was positively predictive of CD symptoms within time. However, associations were not maintained across time. Furthermore, disclosure and solicitation were unrelated to ADHD symptoms at baseline and across time. In turn, ODD symptoms were negatively related to child disclosure within as well as across time; however this association was only marginally statistically significant within time. ADHD and CD symptoms were unrelated to disclosure at both time points. Finally, only ODD symptoms were marginally statistically negatively related to parental solicitation within time, but no symptom clusters were associated with solicitation across time. Implications and future directions are discussed.

Comparing Parent Ratings of Referred Preschoolers on the Child Behavior Checklist and Behavior Assessment System for Children - Second Edition

Bour, Jennifer L 01 May 2008 (has links)
It is essential for school psychologists assessing children to use instruments that are reliable and valid. The focus of the current study is to determine whether or not the parent preschool versions of two popular behavior rating instruments, the Behavior Assessment System for Children – Second Edition (BASC-2; Reynolds & Kamphaus, 2004) and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL; Achenbach & Rescorla, 2000), are consistent measures of similarly-named behavioral constructs in preschool-aged children. Parents of 95 preschoolers referred to a nonprofit child evaluation clinic because of behavioral or developmental concerns completed both the BASC-2 and CBCL during an initial evaluation session. The findings revealed that while significantly high correlations occurred, the mean standard scores were significantly different for nine of the 15 construct comparisons.
