Responding to Crises: A Test of the Situational Crisis Communication Theory

Wright, Courtney 05 December 2008 (has links)
Crisis management includes efforts designed to prevent and to detect potential crises, and to learn from crisis experiences. The SCCT posits that certain crisis responses (matched) produce better outcomes for organizations than others (unmatched), depending on the situation. In addition, the results from this study attempt to support the situational crisis communication theory in aiding crisis managers in protecting their organizations against crises.

A NOVEL MESSAGE ROUTING LAYER FOR THE COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT OF DISTRIBUTED EMBEDDED SYSTEMS

Brown, Darren Jacob 01 January 2010 (has links)
Fault tolerant and distributed embedded systems are research areas that have the interest of such entities as NASA, the Department of Defense, and various other government agencies, corporations, and universities. Taking a system and designing it to work in the presence of faults is appealing to these entities as it inherently increases the reliability of the deployed system. There are a few different fault tolerant techniques that can be implemented in a system design to handle faults as they occur. One such technique is the reconfiguration of a portion of the system to a redundant resource. This is a difficult task to manage within a distributed embedded system because of the distributed, directly addressed data producer and consumer dependencies that exist in common network infrastructures. It is the goal of this thesis work to develop a novel message routing layer for the communication management of distributed embedded systems that reduces the complexity of this problem. The resulting product of this thesis provides a robust approach to the design, implementation, integration, and deployment of a distributed embedded system.

The role of the Intranet at Lonmin Platinum : the perceptions of middle management / Nicola Theunissen

Theunissen, Nicola January 2007 (has links)
The rapid changes in the world of online technology during the last two decades brought along new challenges and opportunities for public relations practitioners. Literature has proven that the interactive capabilities of web-based technology have the possibility to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and create two-way symmetrical communication opportunities. One such technology is an intranet, which could have an immense impact on an organisation's internal communication environment. If managed and applied correctly the intranet has the possibility to build two-way symmetrical relationships with an organisation's internal stakeholders - often described as one of the organisation's most strategic stakeholder groups. In this applied research study, the contribution of an international mining organisation's intranet to internal two-way symmetrical communication was explored and described. An extensive literature study was conducted to determine how an intranet could contribute theoretically to two-way symmetrical communication. The empirical findings were obtained by means of two main research methods: a qualitative content analysis and semi-structured interviews with middle management employees. The content analysis described how the basic principles of two-way symmetrical communication were applied on the Lonmin Platinum intranet. The semistructured interviews with middle management explored and described how they perceived and used the intranet with regard to two-way symmetrical communication. It was concluded that the Lonmin intranet did not contribute to two-way symmetrical communication. A critical conclusion is that an intranet as a mediated communication medium could not contribute to two-way symmetrical communication if the internal communication climate does not facilitate the specific values related to the Excellence Theory and two-way symmetrical communication principles. Another conclusion is that Lonmin's intranet was too technologically focussed. There was no management of strategic communication or ownership, and as a result the intranet did not contribute to two-way symmetrical communication in the organisation. It is suggested that future studies describe the contribution of the Lonmin intranet to two-way symmetrical communication after the communication department had commenced with strategic intranet management. The relation between the contribution of the intranet to two-way symmetrical communication in the organisation and the general communication climate could also be explored in future research studies. / Thesis (M.A. (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

Fragalle, Edilson Pepino. January 2006 (has links)
Abstract: Information is the raw material for the inclusion in knowledge society, characterized by speed of change at science, in information technologies and communication, in the beginning of the century XXI.

Pedro Ulsen 18 December 2012 (has links)
Besides important researches on the dimensions of Organizational Communication, recent studies have shown that sustainability is a contemporary trend. In organizations, this scenario requires from the communicator a broader performance before a complex and postmodern environment that adds up the opportunity of working for sustainability. In this study, it is proposed an understanding of the most suitable professional profile manager, who understands how organizations can incorporate sustainability into its management and the role of communication in this achievement. The context and current researches show that the communication professional is the most appropriate, due to the skills and knowledge acquired in university education, to engage, discuss, disclose, plan, manage, measure, researching, producing materials and develop communication channels of a organization to develop sustainably for the benefit of society.
