The Characterization of Medea, Dido, Ariadne and Deianira in Ovid's "Heroides" and "Metamorphoses"

Bolton, Catherine Mary January 1989 (has links)
<p>Ovid's characterization of women has long been recognized as revealing an understanding of the female psyche. This is shown not only in his love poetry, but also in his depiction of women in the Heroides and Metamorphoses. The Heroides in particular offered considerable scope for the portrayal of women in a state of crisis and for an exploration of their anxieties and conflicts. The verse letters reveal Ovid's interest in portraying women at an early point in his literary career, an interest which he continued throughout his writing career and which again finds expression in the Metarmorphoses.</p> <p>While Howard Jacobson's study (Princeton, 1974) treats all the single letters, Florence Verducci (Princeton, 1985) has restricted her work to five of the fifteen single letters. Little attempt has been made to trace Ovid's depiction of women from the Heroides into his later works. This work investigates the characterization of Medea, Dido, Ariadne and Deianira as they are initially portrayed in the Heroides and as they are later depicted in the Metamorphoses.</p> <p>Each chapter details early accounts of the heroines, followed by an exploration of the characterization in the Heroides and Metamorphoses. It is shown that, while Ovid's knowledge and use of his predecessors is apparent, his ability to adapt the mythological details concerning his heroines creates an entirely new depiction; his portrayal varies from the Heroides to the Metamorphoses due to the demands of the respective genres and to the emphasis which he wishes to place. Despite the familiarity of his figures, Ovid has created divergent, yet coherent, interpretations of pyschological and emotional crises.</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Carrasco Estela, Marcia Patricia January 2024 (has links)
The present investigation deals with the impact that mining extractive activity is generating in our country, the positive side has been the increase in economic income that has allowed the development of other sectors in Peru, mainly in the sectors of economy, education, health etc But the negative side of this extractive mining activity has triggered an increase in socio- environmental conflicts between peasant communities and mining companies. Given this, it seeks to demonstrate that the Regional Governments are attributed control and inspection mechanisms in the mining sector. To be more specific in the medium and large mining of its jurisdiction, counteracting the socio-environmental problems of the country.

The Regulation of Conflict Resources: Diamonds in Sierra Leone. Paper for the Transformation of War Economies Seminar, University of Plymouth 16-19 June 2005.

Cooper, Neil January 2005 (has links)
yes / The last few years have seen the emergence of a series of regulatory initiatives that have been developed, partly in response to the twin agendas of human security and strong states, but which represent a specific reaction to the political economies deemed to underpin contemporary civil conflicts ¿ most notably the way in which local and global markets in everything from diamonds to drugs have been exploited to fund often vicious civil conflicts, particularly in environments characterised by endemic corruption. This new body of local and global regulation, what might loosely be characterised as new laws and new codes to address the political economies of the new wars, include: UN embargoes on diamonds and timber being used to fund conflicts, the development of regimes such as the Kimberley certification system, and initiatives to ensure the transparent and effective use of natural resource revenues. Generally represented as a progressive response to the political economies that drive contemporary civil conflicts, these new initiatives have produced a set of formal and informal regulatory frameworks that are, in fact, profoundly asymmetric in their scope and application. Indeed, one of the defining features of these initiatives is not so much the impartial application of regulations to firms and corrupt elites but either their selective application or, alternatively, their selective relegation in favour of an emphasis on far weaker norms and voluntary codes. The aim of this paper then, is first, to examine the operation of the new codes and regulations in general and to demonstrate the problems in their implementation. Second, the paper will then go onto examine one specific innovation ¿ the Kimberley Certification Scheme designed to prevent the trade in conflict diamonds in order to demonstrate the asymmetries that exist in current regulatory mechanisms designed to introduce ethical markets. It will do this in particular by focussing on the impact of certification for the diamond sector in Sierra Leone. A key argument in this section will be that whilst this new regime for conflict diamonds aims to transform behaviour through transparency and policing, and whilst it appears to have had some success, it has not in fact transformed the conditions that gave rise to the illicit diamond trade in Sierra Leone prior to conflict. Along with the problems inherent in broader development policy on Sierra Leone this raises serious questions. In particular, whilst there may be little short-term risk of conflict, the planned departure of UNAMSIL, continued regional instability, persistent corruption and the failure to fundamentally transform the nature of the diamond market in Sierra Leone, all raise question marks regarding the nature (and indeed sustainability) of the peace that is being created.

As much as technology is growing (connecting computers through the internet among agencies and public entities by the state), any machine will replace the drama of contemporary man, especially those who've been priced out of citizenship. Man's problems can not be solved by machines in distant locations without allowing direct access to the human who controls the machine. This study brings up the reflections and academic discussions developed over the more than 700 hours / lessons of the masters course in the Judiciary, class 2010. Far from being a unanimous decision, the Judiciary is a state power that represents above all the ability and prerogative to judge, according to the rules and the constitutional laws created by the Legislature in a determinate country. It is one of the strongest pillars in democracies and dangerous regimes in the absolute nemesis. Despite this importance and the fact that in Brazil is a solid that has demonstrated its importance in ensuring the solidification of democracy, there are few studies on the Judiciary, and initials are few serious researches on this power of paramount importance to society, to economy and institutions. When we see that the most repetitive dissatisfaction or complaint society lives in the slowness of judicial solutions translated by the high rate of litigation in Brazilian courts. The Judiciary is the object of systematic studies, continuous and advanced in several countries have already demonstrated the importance of knowing well its proposals, the results of its activities, functions, and their costs, because their 'business' is the resolution the conflicts of society to contribute to the pacification of the same through a fair legal system. Studies in the United States, Germany and Spain, for example, show that the Judiciary is familiar with the first step to better manage it. Thus, we have to mention the investment made by the Fundação Getúlio Vargas to promote especially the present Master of the Judiciary. FGV is one of the few private institutions that have as one of its goals the personal preparation, beyond the boundaries of teaching with significant advances in the areas of research and information. In the same way of the professional qualification of judges and their servers and at the forefront of judicial management, the Court of Federal District and Territories, invested and believed in the proposed study and research of this master, deserving significantly, the praise and thanks for vision and investment in the knowledge that it is always important and necessary. The dissertation represents at first a vision against the model of public policy championed by the National Judicial Council, through Resolution 125 of November 29, 2010, whose object is the appropriate treatment of conflicts of interest within the Judiciary, representing this way a special scientific interest because it is a national judicial policy to be adopted, must, by all the courts of justice in the country. Apart from that mentioned above, lives also the fact that the novelty of this study and research, specifically because this public policy deals aspects and new variables in the treatment of the activities and functions of the Judiciary when they propose, as an example, the treatment of the conflicts. Another important aspect that worth the attention in the study is reflected in the discussion of public policy model, that should be treated in general republishing from the state and not particularized, even if it seems constitutionally of the Judiciary to treat exclusively with the problem of high litigation and low answer to the demand in its control. This study has a goal to demonstrate that the resolution 125/2010 CNJ is insufficient to solve the problems of congestion and delay in the Brazilian courts, as recommended, because, the model proposed to combat the problem of delays is restricted and is 'contaminated' by the idea of the monopoly of jurisdiction or a similar kind that brings justice to the scope of a new work activity, which is related to the solution of the conflict pre-trial which should be part of a general public policy does not restricted to a Republican power. Correspondence with the materialization of the arguments used for the problem will be proven in the lines that follow, therefore, with great coverage issues such as judicial remedies should preferably adopt mechanisms for general public a good solution. In this sense, the work will demonstrate that the recurrent attempts to overcome the problem of high lawsuit is restricted to insufficient models covered by a monopoly that should not be applied to solve procedural problems in the pre Judiciary. It is therefore a counterpoint to the idea of effectiveness in reducing the traditional lawsuit as provided for by the judicial against the monopoly of jurisdiction, ie, the reserve forward who holds the judiciary in promoting and managing of a new activity - the treatment of conflicts of interest pre-trial through instruments, notably the conciliation and mediation. We present also, in this study, legislative proposals that give material support to the presented ideas, characterizing the evidence of the viability between the presentation of scientific problem, the reasons for the confronting of the problem and a solution for it, how to modernize a public policy. Important to reaffirm that the scope of this present work is not based on the observation of the models and techniques of conflict resolution, notably the conciliation and mediation, encouraged by the CNJ, models or arbitration. Rather, it is expected that all attempts to improve and modernize the current legal services in Brazil are valid, effective and very welcome, because it is a positive attempt to improve the current scenario is the Judiciary when is confronted in their access to justice, speed, reliability and security of your judgments.

Abdi, Akam, Chen, Wei January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to examine the banks view of internalcontrol and further investigate what mechanisms are used tostreamline the internal controls. The study is directed into whetherthe whistle-blowing is used as one of the tools in the internalcontrol to enhance the ability to detect and prevent irregularities ofa financial character. The study use a inductive method to lead the collection of datamaterial. The study further use a qualitative method based on fourinterviews with different banks were this data material is comparedwith existing theories in the second chapter. The study shows that the view of internal control and whistleblowingis positive in the process to create a successful company inthe banks. Despite that the whistle- blowing is known as acomplicated function, it’s still used to detect and preventirregularities of crimes, such of financial character. Except whistleblowing, the banks are using more tools to streamline the internalcontrol. To urge employees to comply laws and other principles, education in different areas for employers but also to createdifferent work approaches in the company, to make internal checkupsand constant supervision of the organization work is some ofthe tools that are used.

The blurred lines between war and crime : the case of Colombia

Wenger, Mireille Mary 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research assignment deals with the breakdown in the Clausewitzian concept of the modern trinitarian structure of war. Martin Van Creveld in his book entitled, “The Transformation of War” written in 1991, discusses ‘Future War’ and the way in which wars will be fought. It will not be the highly technical interstate kind of war the West has been preparing for, but rather low intensity conflict where the lines between state, soldier and civilian become blurred, society becomes a war zone and the conflict becomes a more direct experience for the people. Colombia is a prime example of where this is occurring and the most salient manifestation of the low intensity conflict is the blurring of the lines between war and crime. There are left wing guerrillas fighting for social justice for the dispossessed population, but their tactics resemble crime and the government views them as terrorists. They run a self-sufficient organisation, one of the most profitable insurgent groups in the world largely funded through kidnap ransom payments. The right-wing paramilitaries are on a quest to cleanse Colombian society of the guerrillas and assassinate suspected guerrilla sympathisers. To complicate issues, both insurgent groups are involved in the drug trafficking trade, whether it be directly or by way of taxing land on which coca is grown. In this situation, war and crime have become inextricably linked and a distinction between the two is impossible on both practical and conceptual levels. However, if it is not crime and it is not war, but a complicated melange of the two, a new framework for analysis is required in order to attempt a solution.

Jurisdikcijos klausimai pagal Tarybos reglamentą (EB) Nr. 1346/2000 dėl bankroto bylų / Jurisdictional Issues under the Council Regulation 1346/2000 on Insolvency Proceedings

Skukauskas, Simonas 07 February 2011 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Council Regulation 1346/2000 on Insolvency Proceedings is the outcome of forty years of efforts to harmonize the rules regarding the jurisdictional issues on cross-border insolvency in the context of European Union. By combining the two models of international insolvency proceedings – universality and territoriality – the Regulation provides different jurisdictional rules on cross-border insolvency proceedings depending on whether the main insolvency proceedings or the secondary insolvency proceedings are going to be opened. The Master thesis deals with the content of the category determining the jurisdiction to open the main insolvency proceedings, i.e. the centre of main interests. As a result the Thesis concludes that the Regulation does not provide the explicit content of the centre of main interests’ category. Therefore it encourages the different interpretation and application of Regulation’s provisions related to the opening the main insolvency proceedings by the courts of Member States. Regulation deals with issue regarding the jurisdictional conflicts by determining the priority rule under which the judgment opening the insolvency proceeding should be automatically recognized in all other Member States from the time that it becomes effective in the State of the opening of proceedings. Master thesis deals with the issues regarding the seeking to obtain a more favorable legal position (forum shopping). The Author concludes that on of the main aims of this Regulation –... Estimating pedestrian accident risk using conflict techniques and digital imaging.

Dookhi, Revash. January 2003 (has links)
Accidents are a complex process involving many contributory factors. The understanding of the accident process has often been sought by the use of accident data. Although accident data provide a direct relationship to estimating accident risk, there are many drawbacks associated with the use of these data. The major drawback with the use of accident data is the very fact that traffic engineers have to wait for accidents to occur before any interventions can be made. This alone is significant as the time span required to collect a sample size is often a three-year period. The many deficiencies with accident data have led to alternative measures such as traffic conflict techniques (TCT's) to estimate accident risk.In this investigation. traffic conflict techniques were used to estimate accident risk. There are four basic traffic conflict concepts and the development of these techniques was based on the accident process. The aim of this investigation was to highlight the differences between these concepts and to assess the applicability of these concepts to vehicle-pedestrian conflicts. The investigation was based on applying the various conflict techniques to data obtained at three intersections in the Durban CBD. In order to record the data an innovative method of using digital imaging was employed. This led to the development of a computer program to analyse conflict events. Analysis of the intersections based on the conflict techniques indicates that the intersections of Pine-Field and Commercial-Grey have a high probability of road users being involved in a "serious event" once there is an interaction between them. However, the probability for Commercial-Albert intersection is low thus indicating a safe intersection for vehicle-pedestrian interactions. The number of "serious events" at these locations was found to be related to the interacting traffic volumes - the conflict rate increases with increasing traffic volume. The use of conflict-volume models and accident models together with the conflict concepts agree that the accident risk is related to the conflicting traffic volumes and speed of the road users. / Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2003.

Fontaine-Boyte, Cathy 05 1900 (has links)
Numerous studies have shown that hyperactive-impulsive behaviors are associated with poor engagement among elementary school students. Yet, very few studies have tried to explain this association. The aim of the present study was to examine the mediating role of teacher-student conflicts on the relationship between hyperactivity-impulsivity and behavioral engagement among 533 3rd to 6th grade students. The first three objectives are to examine whether hyperactivity-impulsivity is negatively associated with behavioral engagement, if hyperactivity-impulsivity is positively associated with teacher-student conflicts, and if teacher-student conflict is negatively associated with engagement. The fourth objective is to determine the potential mediating effect of teacher-student conflict on the relationship between hyperactivity-impulsivity and student behavioral engagement. Our results demonstrated that teacher-student conflicts partly explain the relationship between hyperactive-impulsive behaviors and student engagement. These results imply that children who move a lot, who do not remain in place, and who constantly interrupt others present more conflicts with teachers which undermine their engagement and participation in classroom work and school. Since the results indicates a partial mediation, it appears that other mechanisms needs to be explored in order to explain the negative association between hyperactive-impulsive behaviors and student engagement.

This text is an essay relating to a situation I was involved in where two different cultures caused a conflict in one of the pupils. The pupil was supposed to perform a swimming test and the parents wanted him/her to use full body clothing which the pupil had not done before. Because of this, the pupil suddenly was in conflict with herself/himself and I (the author) found myself in a situation where I felt torn between the purpose as an educator and the cultural values of the pupil. The purpose of my essay is to find an approach to the values of pupils and parents which sometimes affect my way of work. Our school curriculum states that we must prevent differences of gender but at the same time respect the culture of the individual. Several times I find myself trapped between cultural values from the pupil´s family situation and our educational purpose. How do I deal with this? How does switching between two cultures affect the pupil? The concept and perspectives that I am going to reflect on are interculturality, multi culturalism and I will also discuss heritage, environment, traditions, identity and the importance of the family. I will review myself and my own reflections. I will reflect upon how I use fronesis, my practical wisdom which I have gathered through experience. What can I improve when I use my professionalism within the cultural areas? Writing this essay, I still feel torn between the different missions. I always feel the need to act with the pupil´s best interest at heart. If this means I counteract gender patterns, so be it. In my opinion the culture doesn´t really matter because all individuals have the same value. The school simply cannot teach the pupils ethics and then not act accordingly themselves.
