Sacred Land Endowments and Field Consecrations in Early Judaism

Gordon, Benjamin Davis January 2013 (has links)
<p>The endowment of land as a gift for religious institutions was a prominent feature of ancient society in the Near Eastern and Mediterranean worlds. Landed plots could with proper care become enduring, remunerative assets to these institutions and their ownership a mark of honor and prosperity. Once endowed, such plots were regularly viewed across cultures as the property of a patron deity, his or her role modeling that of the absentee landlord. Tantalizing clues in the Jewish source material relevant to the Second Temple period (515 BCE-70 CE) demonstrate that the phenomenon was part of early Jewish life in this period as well, though it has hardly been considered in scholarship.</p><p> The source material consists of a diverse group of ancient Jewish texts. A utopian vision at the end of the book of Ezekiel discusses a sacred land endowment as part of a reform program for the Jerusalem temple and its economy (Chapter 2). A legislative addendum to the book of Leviticus presents regulations on the proper use of arable land as a means of dedicating assets from the farm (Chapter 3). A description by the Jewish historian Josephus of the founding of a schismatic Jewish temple in Egypt delegitimizes the cult of sacrifice there by calling attention to the impurity of its land endowment; a similar perspective emerges in 1 Maccabees from its literary use of the gifting of the Ptolemais hinterland to the Jerusalem temple (Chapter 4). A legal section of the Damascus Document is concerned with the consecration of property as an act of fraud (Chapter 5), while the apostle Paul quotes a halakhic teaching on field consecrations in a preface to his famous olive tree allegory (Chapter 6). A halakhic text (4Q251) from the Qumran repository reasserts the priesthood's claim to a specific type of sacred land donation and works to uphold its sanctity (Chapter 7). </p><p> I argue by virtue of these various Jewish texts that the category of "temple land" simply does not apply for greater Judea in the Second Temple period. In Jerusalem, the temple did not hold tracts of land and enter into leasing arrangements with agricultural entrepreneurs or small renters, as attested in other regions of the ancient world. Rather it seems to have encouraged a system where gifts of land went directly from benefactor to priest or stayed entirely in the hands of the benefactor, the land's products or monetary equivalent then dedicated toward sacred purposes. Only in Egypt do we see evidence of a Jewish temple holding land of the type well known in other societies. </p><p> I suggest that the Judean sacred landholding arrangements were part of an ethos whereby land cultivation and support for the temple were to remain in the hands of the people, the accumulation and leasing out of temple land seen as perhaps contradictory to this ethos if not also a mark of foreignness. Incidentally, by the later centuries of the era the Judean religious authorities sustained its sanctuary in Jerusalem quite effectively by encouraging the devotees of the religion to contribute an annual tax and visit the city bearing gifts on three yearly pilgrimage festivals. Landed gifts are indeed an overlooked feature of this temple economy but were probably not a major component of its revenues.</p> / Dissertation

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze texts written by contemporary playwrights from the city of São Paulo, between the years of 2005 to 2015, considering a relationship between text and the scene within the dramaturgies, identifying and reflecting on a presence of incorporated elements of a scenic grammar that evoke materialities in its textual structures. The analysis starts from the debate about the change in the state of the text throughout the twentieth century, considering the double movement of emancipation of the text and the scene in relation to the tutelage of the dramatic genre, which sets up new possibilities of writing and staging more permissible among themselves. Based on theoretical references in the first chapter, an analysis evaluation is created for the examination of selected dramaturgies, with the aim of positioning, in the third chapter, between two poles: mythos and opsis - and later considered recurrent polarities between devices found in the texts. The corpus of this dissertation, analyzed in the second chapter, is composed of texts by authors who won the Shell Prize of Theater in São Paulo in the category of Best Author in the period of eleven years - until the beginning of the research. This methodological cut is resumed at the end of the third chapter with the aim of establishing connections between the process of legitimation of cultural goods by instances of consecration, according to a conception of the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, and the dramaturgical structures analyzed, on the unfolding between theory and practice in contemporaneity, as well as on the function of the author and the notion of authorship, in the context of the new state of the theatrical text - and in the place of the playwright - in the process of creation.

Publicidade no Brasil: presença americana, jogo político e consagração / Advertising in Brazil: American presence, political game and consecration

Eric Anacleto Ribeiro 05 September 2018 (has links)
In order to actually understand a particular social group and its importance throughout history, it is essential to analyze the contexts that permeated its development, highlighting the relationships established with the social institutions and identifying its legitimate consecration capital. From this perspective, the research presented here aimed to unravel the main aspects of the development of a powerful institution of cultural production and transmission in Brazilian society: advertising; as well as the power and political relations that important professionals of that field developed. More specifically, we sought to put on the agenda the issue of advertising activity as a social field, holder of specific interests and capital, starting from the US influence, its agencies and clients, as well as the adaptation to Brazilian social and political scenario and the settings established by Military Government. To this end, we sought to reconstruct the emergence of an elite of advertisers, identifying their consecration institutions and the political and historical contexts that have contributed to the formation of a habitus. The study was based on the research of documentary sources, such as press material, advertising annuals, interviews and testimonials from Center for Research and Documentation of Contemporary History of Brazil files. Besides, we explored what has already been produced regarding Brazil and US relations and the development of the field in both countries, seeking to analyze, from the perspective of the sociology of production of symbolic goods, the main determinants of the rise of the representatives of such a field and their relations with political institutions, always seeking for a true perspective of the corporative world, where clients are recruited

La formation de la croyance en la valeur littéraire en situation coloniale et postcoloniale : étude des trajectoires de consécration des écrivains algériens francophones Assia Djebar et Kateb Yacine, en France, entre 1950 et 2009 / The formation of belief in literary value in colonial and postcolonial situation : study of consecration’s career of Algerian authors of French language Assia Djebar and Kateb Yacine, between 1950 and 2009, in France

Harchi, Kaoutar 12 September 2014 (has links)
The present doctoral thesis is intersestd in the formation of the belief in literary value in colonial and postcolonial situation, between 1950 and 2009, in France. For that, we made the choice to pay our attention to the paths of recognition of two Algerian authors of French language who have been the object of an objectivable literary achievment, namely Assia Djebar (1936-) and Kateb Yacine (1929-1989). Since the Algerian literary of French language core statement can’t pertinently be approached via the prism of the fields theory by Pierre Bourdieu, we made the choice to resort, through our study, to the concept of literary insitution defined by the likes of Jacques Dubois. According to what we then could have observed through a corpus made up of talks, press articles, official discourses, private correspondences, the literary phenomenon of recognition of the two Algerian authors would be modeled in the form of five stages: the discovery, the publication, the critical reception, the entry in the academic field and the entry in the universe of secondary education. The interest of this modeling is mainly based on its capacity to reveal, beyond the literary doxa, the social methods that have contributed to the formation of a belief in the quality of the given textual productions. And, at each stage of the paths of recognition of Assia Djebar and Kateb Yacine, we can observe strong relations between, on the one hand, the literary and, on the other hand, the extra-literary. In this direction, the commonly widespread idea according to which the recognition of an author would only be based on talent is strongly questionned. The French-speaking literature or, more precisely, the literary francophonie – denomination under which Assia Djebar and Kateb Yacine are regularly categorized – thus appears to be a regulated system depending on interests far from being allegedly “pure”, but driven by ideological and political logics. Engaged in relations of symbolic domination, Assia Djebar and Kateb Yacine have both, during their respective paths, set up of specific strategies in order to limit the instrumental value of their textual productions and impose their own definition of what Algerian literature of French language truly should be.

The Principles and Nature of Consecration and Stewardship as Taught in the Bible and Modern Scripture and by the Prophets, Seers, and Revelators of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

Brandt, Edward J. 01 January 1970 (has links) (PDF)
This study analyzes the intent and primary bases of the L.D.S. concepts of Zion, consecration, and stewardship as it applies to the individual. Only the scripture and the statements of the Prophets, Seers, and Revelators of the L.D.S. Church are considered. An exhaustive history of consecration or stewardship is not provided. No attempt is made to establish Church doctrine.Major conclusions are: (1) the most important definition of Zion is the "pure in heart" who, when a community, are the perfect society; (2) the concept of consecration is to wholly love God, and is achieved through the gospel of Jesus Christ, resulting in Christ-like love or charity; (3) the royal law--to love others--fulfills every law of God, and those with charity extend the love of Christ in divine service, any resultant community has a unity with the Lord; (4) the earth and all therein is the Lord's--the individual's stewardship is his sphere of accountability in regard to the earth, its possessions, Jesus Christ, and the individual's inter-relationship with others.

Att vara vigd åt socialt arbete : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om vigningens betydelse med diakoner i Svenska kyrkan / Being consecrated to social work : A qualitative interview study on the ordination services significance with deacons in the Church of Sweden

Scherer, Benjamin January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine what significance it may have for deacons within the Church of Sweden to be consecrated to their mission. Within the framework of the study, nine qualitative research interviews were conducted with deacons from five different parishes in the Stockholm diocese. The material was processed in hermeneutical tradition and analysed based on the theory of role transitions. The study indicates that the ordination implies an identity that brings a sense of meaning, control and belonging. This identity permeates not only the deacon's social work but the deacon's entire life. The ordination requires that the deacon lives an integrated life, which means coherence between who one is at work and who one is off work, and brings with it expectations from different directions that the deacon must relate to. The study also indicates an ambivalence among the interviewees; while the role of the deacon permeates the deacon's entire life, the deacon must set boundaries of various kinds in order to be able to step out of her or his work.

Cruz, Karina Garcia Santos 27 May 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research aims to analyze how the social columnism serving elites of consecration instrument. It starts from the principle that social columnism is legitimate tool of social groups occupying strategic positions in society. Including the craft originates from positions of ratification demand of "great families" US traditional who lost power and prestige space for the new rich who emerged from the post Civil War. It is noted from the office of the emergence direct linkage between these two groups, the columnism establishing itself as one more tool in the consecration strategies of individuals concentrated in the social centers of power. To cope with the problem, the research was subdivided into three stages. The first aimed to highlight the consecration modes anchoring to the paths taken by certain individuals and groups, the strategies adopted (political coordination, the associations of power groups, political militancy, complimentary sessions congregation ceremonies, etc.) and social resources acquired during the socialization paths in different social spheres (family, school, college, professional, etc.), and bring to light the socio-historical and geographical circumstances that made it possible for such individuals and groups came to power spheres. The second phase aims to present social demands and socio-historical conditions that allowed the emergence of the craft of social columnist. It also exposes how the craft was noted as lucrative source for media companies, allowing the consolidation of the positions of gossip columnists and expanding their spaces in the newspapers. Besides showing attempts to establish the office of borders, demands by definition, for organization and control, to be seen as subarea of the journalism profession, rather interpreted craft and minimally recognized. The third set out to elucidate how the gossip columnists who make up the craft in Sergipe launch strategies, develop skills and accumulate social resources aimed at social consecration. So are explained the composition and characteristics of Sergipe gossip columnists are presented the routine work, the skills developed, the codes shared by working in the office, also they consume, how they build their numbered schedules, among other aspects. The main objective is to carry out the survey of biographical information (social origin, parents´ occupations, educational background, college and professional careers, travel, inserts in different spheres, marriage, tastes and lifestyles, etc.) in order to reveal how accumulate resources, launch strategies, develop skills for both self-consecration as the consecration of individuals and groups leaders. This part also contains an account of the observations noted in the field of daily counting to extract information to provide complete responses to the survey. The empirical universe considered consists of 6 active social columnists in newspapers Sergipe Mail, Journal of the City and Cinform. The research allowed to show that the columnists consecrated by developing certain skills, such interactional, creating strategies such as the marketing staff, mobilizing action repertoires, the lexicon adjective due to the creation of "good pictures", becoming important piece of gears and power structures.

La vie consacrée en droit canonique et en droit public français : critères de reconnaissance dans les associations de fidèles / Consecrated life in Canon law and French law : recognition criteria in associations of the faithful

Burgun, Cédric 24 June 2015 (has links)
Today in the Roman Catholic Church new forms of “associative” communities are emerging and posing a certain number of questions in regard to Canon Law. One of the questions concerns those who choose to live a celibate state of "consecrated life" in these new forms of community life within the Church. Beyond the structures and organic criteria of consecrated life, which sometimes in itself can frustrate any serious reflection, what are the criteria in utroque iure, that would allow for the recognition of such a state of life in Canon law? New forms of consecrated life in the Catholic Church can also question French law. Some of these new forms acquire the status of an international public association in Canon law, and ask, for example, for legal recognition as a “religious congregation", in French law. Questions than arise on matters such as social security, labor law, and other issues within this legal congregational status. These are the essential canonical and French legal criteria for these movements that our study is to clarify. How can the profession of the evangelical counsels, the sacred bonds, stability, fraternal life, and submission to an approved rule of life, all canonical requirements be fulfilled, while also satisfying French legal requirements, such as social security, pension schemes and litigation activity, in the new forms of “associative communities?”
