On the serious social implications of humorous art

Van Tonder, Anna Magrieta 31 January 2007 (has links)
Modern humour appears to initiate the deconstruction of modern correspondence thinking. A close examination shows the opposite, namely that modern humour forms part of correspondence thought in a complicated reciprocal relationship of disruption and support. Ironically, humour is particularly suited to explicating the deconstruction of correspondence thinking in poststructuralist language theories by being prone to refute cornerstone principles of modernism such as truth, rationality, reliability and permanence. This dissertation focuses on the exceptional suitability of humour to adapt to the loss of the centre and to demonstrate the shift from the modernist ontological approach to the postmodernist creative metaphorical approach to art. Humour, like metaphor, reinvents meaning rather than discovers it; it remains open-ended instead of offering closure. It becomes a valid creative option and enters a new dynamic into a postmodern culture of play where truth and meaning remain infinitely suspended in an ungrounded state of possibility. / Art History, Visual Arts and Music / M.A. (Visual Arts)

[en] RUMOR OF ARCHIVE: ROSÁRIO FUSCO, C EST LA VIE! / [pt] RUMOR DE ARQUIVO: ROMANCE E CONTÁGIO: ROSÁRIO FUSCO, C EST LA VIE!

CECILIA GUSMAO WELLISCH 18 May 2017 (has links)
[en] Rumor de Arquivo: Rosário Fusco, c est la vie! stages by means of arrangements, voices and mediatory machines, a transit among the fictional work O Agressor by Fusco and the author s life. In this context, the author s archival documents are explored, aiming specially in a collection of unknown (and sparse) letters, traded between the author and Mário de Andrade, from 1927 to 1940, with the intent to explore and transform privations, deviations, deletions, which are invariably imposed on biographical research, as a source of inventions related to reflections over the object of research and its subsequent manifestations. Rosário Fusco s aggressor impels DAVID, the aggressor, to an open scene, exposed, a denouncer of the mediating voices; Standard, already re-harmonize and altered in its irrepressible virus. Facing a form of archive fever, as a trail is craved, a sparkle of truth ignites in contrast with inherent and unconditional restrictions. Following in the footsteps of Biographical Criticism, Rumor of Archive establishes a theater, and employing the expressions of Eneida Maria de Souza and secondly Philippe Lejeune, invention and aestheticization of memory (…) truthfully-lies.

This thesis presents the first social experiment conducted to analyze discrimination against gays in the Brazilian labor market within the state of São Paulo. A correspondence test was carried out by sending simulated fictitious resumés to current jobs openings. All candidate characteristics were identical between the two resumés sent out, except for the experience of voluntary work: one curriculum was signaled that the candidate worked in a gay organization (treatment) and the other did not (control). The selection of which resumé to send out per job opening was entirely random. Simulations were then carried out within different informational scenarios for labor productivity, to verify the existence of statistically different levels of callbacks between treatment and control groups. The results indicate that, within a scenario of larger informational asymmetry, being associated to or identified as gay has a negative effect of the probability of employment.

Symétries, courants et holographie des spins élevés / Symmetries, currents and holography of higher spins

Meunier, Elisa 22 November 2012 (has links)
The higher spin theory is the field of theoretical physics at the center of this thesis. The general context of the birth of this theory is presenting in the introduction. The first part focuses on the ingredients (Noether method, generating functions and ambient formalism) for the construction of cubic vertices between a scalar matter field and a higher spin gauge field in a constant curvature space-time from conserved currents in flat space-time. In a second step, we prepare the around for a future test of the holographic correspondence in the cubic or quartic order in the coupling constant. More specifically, we review in detail the computation of some propagators, which leads us to calculate three-point functions involving two scalars. The last part, although always on the higher spin holography, deals with non-relativistic physics. Symmetries and currents of an ideal or unitary Fermi gas are studied. The link between relativistic and non-relativistic physics is obtained by Bargmann dimensional reduction.

Překladatel Ludvík Kundera / The Translator Ludvík Kundera

Nešporová, Jitka January 2014 (has links)
Jitka Nešporová doctoral thesis ABSTRACT The doctoral thesis focuses on the translation persona and work of Ludvík Kundera. A poet himself, he translated verse first and foremost and was able to do so from many languages, although he sometimes resorted to the use of interlinear translations. The research, however, concentrates primarily on the description, analysis and reception of his direct translations in the Czech - German language pair, which was predominant in Kundera's translation work. The thesis contributes to the understanding of the history of Czech literary translation after 1945 by describing Kundera's translation method, making accessible part of his literary estate, notably his correspondence, and providing an update to Kundera's translation bibliography. Kundera is best known as the exclusive, authorized translator of Bertolt Brecht's drama and poetry. His translations of Expressionists Georg Trakl and Gottfried Benn, for which he received the State Award for Literary Translation in 1996, are considered canonical today. The same holds true for his translations of Paul Celan's poetry and Alfred Kubin's novel Die andere Seite (The Other Side). Kundera was also the first to introduce Czech readers to the poetry of Alsatian Dadaist Hans Arp and the poetry of East German lyricist Peter Huchel....

On-line friendships

Zaczek, Dominika 28 February 2004 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence and quality of on-line friendships, to find which individual characteristics differentiate people who look for and form on-line friendship(s) from those who don't, and to discover factors which are of importance for the development of on-line friendship(s). 574 Internet users completed an on-line questionnaire. The results showed that: (1) almost 50% of respondents had on-line friendship(s); (2) off-line friendships were better developed than on-line friendships. However, there was only a minor difference between the quality of the best off-line and best on-line friendships; (3) the Internet was a safe place for building personal relationships, especially for shy individuals; (4) people who felt lonely were more likely to turn to the Internet to find friends; (5) Internet usage and attitudes to the Internet were significant factors that differentiated those who looked for and formed friendship(s) on-line from those who didn't. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Inside the house of truth : the construction, destruction and reconstruction of Can Themba

Mahala, Siphiwo 11 1900 (has links)
This study is, by its intention at any rate, an attempt at assembling the scattered fragments of Can Themba’s life to make a composite being out of the various existing phenomena that shaped the contours of his life in both literary and literal senses. Given the disjunctive manner in which Can Themba and his work have been represented thus far, a combination of Historical and Biographical research methods will underpin the approach of this study. The resultant approach is the Historical-Biographical method of research. According to Guerin et al (2005, 22) the Historical-Biographical approach “sees the work chiefly, if not exclusively, as the reflection of author’s life and times or the life and times of the characters in the work.” This research is premised on the conviction that an individual is a constellation of multiple factors that play a pivotal role in the construction of their persona. These factors will be traced from his family background, early schooling, tertiary education, socio-economic conditions as well as his contribution to various newspapers and journals. While so much has been written about Themba and his work, there is no comprehensive biography of Can Themba as a person. Most importantly, the factors that contributed to his making as well as his breaking, or destruction, have not been interrogated in a form of comprehensive academic research. Rightly or wrongly, Themba’s meteoric rise into the South African literary canon is often traced from the moment he won the inaugural Drum Magazine short story competition. Themba became one of the most popular journalists and rose within the ranks of Drum to become the Assistant Editor. However, my research demonstrates that winning the Drum short story competition was the culmination of a literary talent that was developed and had been simmering for a number of years. Themba studied at the University of Fort Hare between 1945 and 1951 alongside the likes of Dennis Brutus, Ntsu Mokhehle, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, and many other prominent individuals. He was a regular contributor to The Fortharian, a university publication that published opinion pieces, poems and short stories. This is a vital component of Themba’s intellectual growth and it remains the least explored aspect of his life. As a result, what has been discursively documented by various scholars, writers and journalists, thus far, is a very parochial representation of Can Themba’s oeuvre. / English Studies / D. Deconstructing and restoring photography as an embodiment of memory

Naude, Irene 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation considers whether photography as a language translates a transient moment into an embodied image. This is considered to be a mimesis of the moment as an aid for memory. By following a dialectic approach I posit a thesis based on the common sense perception of photography which states that photography is an artefactual mimesis aiding memory. After reflecting on Plato’s concept of writing as a pharmakon and Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction theory I establish an antithesis which proclaims that a photograph aids memory but also leads to the illusion of remembering past experiences. The synthesis is then presented which resolves the opposing ideas. This component argues that a photograph is a mimetic device that aids memory by presenting embodied fragmented reflections of time which can be used to create new meanings and memories. The dissertation concludes with a discussion that supports and integrates this argument with visual research. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / M.A. (Visual Arts)

Ontwikkeling van wiskundige konsepte by die kleuter in speelgroepe

Fourie, Maria Elizabeth 11 1900 (has links)
The Giant Encyclopedia of Math Activities for Children 3 to 6”. / The aim of this study was to determine whether numeracy can be developed among preschoolers in `n playgroup situation by means of a numeracy programme which introduces them to mathematical concepts. To achieve this aim a numeracy programme was used to introduce the mathematical concepts. The numeracy programme that was used is a programme compiled from “The Giant Encyclopedia of Math Activities for Children 3 to 6” by Charner, Murphy and Clark (2007). The activities which were used during the pre-test and post-test were taken from different sources on the internet. The activities taken from these different sources were adapted to the appropriate developmental phase of the preschoolers. At the end of the programme the post-test indicated an improvement in the mathematical competence of all the learners. The results of the study prove that preschoolers in a playgroup can improve their numeracy skills in the early years. / Teacher Education / M. Ed. (Didaktiek)
